Hi all!
An interesting week politically! First we don’t need any help from outside of Ireland, then suddenly we do need help. And the press, which LOVES doom&gloom anyway and the opposition parties panic about losing Ireland’s sovereignty. I think most agree that the current government is not very good sorting all the economic challenges and many think it should be replaced. But I wonder if any other party would be able to do a better job. They all have no experience with a situation like that and maybe it is a good idea to ask people from outside the country to take over for a while. Loosing Ireland’s sovereignty? Well, if a teenager screws up then the parents reduce the independence of the teenager, help getting the trouble sorted and later provide bit by bit more freedom again. Brian Cowen and Brian Lenihan are definitely not a good job, but what would qualify Enda Kenny or Eamonn Gilmore more? DO they have more experience?
Does that mean we are doomed and better give up? Not at all!! We should become MORE active and create opportunities and initiatives because in difficult times the best ideas are created. We have to accept that not politicians will “fix” Ireland’s economy, instead it will have to be you and me! Normal people that use their cleverness and energy to come up with ideas to change things. One very recent great initiative is called the “Graduate Plug”. It is part of the Designing Dublin – Love the City Initiative and is a platform for connecting graduates, small business, start-ups and funds. The Graduate Plug ran two workshops on Wed and Thurs and hopefully there will be a lot more activities. If you agree with me and think that these initiatives will be a lot more effective than what the whole lot of our politicians will manage to do, then join the Graduate Plug or look out for other similar ideas. Change starts with you!! www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001851783703&v=wall

One of my initiatives is this weekly newsletter. And if you are doing something to make a difference instead of working for others to “fix” the world, then let me know. Send a mail to dublioneventguide@gmail.com with the subject DIFFERENCE and might tell your story in one of the next weeks.

More wonderful people were prepared to help: Gordon S, Irene H, Ellen B, Joe O’D, Geraldine D, all donated this week to keep the Event Guide on the road! Thanks very much, you are great! Every bit of help is very much appreciated. It is really easy to make me smile! And one way is to donate here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm :-)
This week we can as well welcome a new sponsor to the exclusive group of Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) Sponsors. Olivier Cornet from www.olliart.com organises and manages art exhibitions as art curator and will now be listed as a sponsor for the next 12 months. Thanks for your help!
This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-) You can donate any amount you wish to help with or – as an option – you can now chose a yearly “subscription” on www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm
Instead whereby a 12 Euro donation will automatically be carried out every year.
You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Again I have a busy weekend ahead of me, but at least next week will be back to normal after two Thursday evening Gospel choir gigs, which seriously interfere with me writing of this newsletter.
On Saturday and Sunday I will be at a NLP course run by Patrick Cumiskey, the topic this time is “Dynamic Impact” and will cover Negotiation and Influencing. Interesting stuff! We use a good bit of these components in the self-defence training at www.kravmagaireland.com. Because when you think about it, before it comes to a scenario where someone needs to defend themselves, often there is an aspect of negotiation and influencing!
The main events this week are the Christmas Lights events in Dun Laoghaire and in the City Centre. Dun Laoghaire always turns it into a big and impressive festival and in Dublin this year is the first time that the three areas (Grafton Street, Henry Street and O’Connell Street) are co-ordinated, which is a step forward. Sure, if you don’t have children then Christmas lights might have less of an attraction to you. But it still is a nice spectacle if you are just around by accident. ;-)
The rest of the week is full with events, but I have to admit that there is nothing that absolutely grabs me. On Thursday I would be curious about what Tony Humphreys in his “Children Feeling Good” talk will explain and the “Secrets to Staying Positive” workshop in the Central Library sounds interesting.

______Competition______________
CHILDREN’S “OPERA TUNES” – GAIETY THEATRE – TICKETS
The Children’s ‘Opera Tunes’ Event is a family event that gives you an opportunity to introduce your children in a nice way to the fascinating world of Opera. On Sat 20 Nov from 12:00-13:00 in the Gaiety Theatre, the Bugs Bunny classic ‘What’s Opera Doc?’ and other opera cartoon favourites such as ‘The Rabbit of Seville’ and ‘Baton Bunny’ will be screened. These cartoons will appeal to parents and children alike and the screening will be followed by a live performance and some very special surprises. Tickets are EUR 10 for adults and EUR 8 for children and a Family Ticket (2 adults + 2 children) is EUR 30. You can book on 1890 673727 and find all details here www.operaireland.ie/index.jsp?p=94&n=193 Opera Ireland has made a family ticket available for a competition here and the lucky winner is Mary Kennedy.
All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

TERMINAL 2 – DUBLIN AIRPORT
Today (Fri) Terminal 2 at Dublin airport will be officially opened. From the outside it is an impressive building and it will be interesting to see the inside of it. It seems that nearly all of us will use it soon, because apparently most airlines want to move from Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 and Aer Lingus will move all flights from January over to Terminal 2, but the first airline to use it will be Etihad Airlines from next Tuesday. Currently only Ryanair is determined to stay in the old Terminal 1.

COMPANIES IN AND OUT OF TROUBLE
While Aer Arann made it successfully out of examinership again, which will give the airline another chance, there is no more chance for the building company Pierse Group and it is not looking overly good for the other construction company McInerney. The DVD rental company Chartbusters already closed at the end of October and the Four Star Pizza chain is in trouble as well and has an interim examiner appointed. With 40 outlets, Four Star Pizza is the second largest Pizza franchise in Ireland and if the company had to close, up to 435 staff would be affected. www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/frontpage/2010/1116/1224283412621.html

7UP CHRISTMAS ON ICE
This year the Ice Rinks in Dublin will be at the RDS and on top (!!) of Arnott’s in Henry Street. The RDS ice rink will be open from 03 Dec-09 Jan and the “ice rink” at the rooftop of Arnott’s is already open and will stay open until 23 Jan. It is a little surprising that an ice rink is on top of a building, but it gets more surprising. The “ice rink” is completely artificial. So there is no ice at all, but I guess it is a sort of plastic surface. The surface is called “Xtraice” and is allegedly used at Disneyland in Paris, it is neither wet nor cold, so all in all, probably rather surreal as “ice”. Despite the fact that the Xtraice doesn’t require any regular maintenance and can be used for 10 years, the “ice” skating charge is still EUR 12 for 50 min, which is exactly the same as for the RDS ice rink. www.7upchristmasonice.ie/
There will be another Ice Rink in Dundrum (and possibly in other locations), however, Smithfield and Liffey Valley will both be Ice Rink-free this year.
HELP CHANGING DUBLIN…AND WIN A HELICOPTER FLIGHT
….and you are still interested in this, so I will leave it up another two weeks or so. Make sure that you share your opinion: Dublin City wants to improve the city. For “Your Dublin, Your Voice”, you are asked to complete a short survey before Fri 10 Dec to share your Experience of Living, Working or Studying in Dublin. If you help with your opinions you will be entered into a prize draw and two lucky winners will each receive a voucher for two people for a scenic helicopter tour of Dublin. Go to the survey here: surveys.delve-surveys.com/dccpanel?friendref=133545975
Once you register and complete the first survey you will then become a member of the ‘Dublin Opinion Panel’. As a panel member you may be contacted up to four times per year to complete a short survey about Dublin…and you can win more prizes.
For more information about the whole initiative check www.dublincity.ie/YOURCOUNCIL/Pages/Yourdublinyourvoice.aspx
———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 7000+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.
More to come! New companies that will be mentioned here soon are a Car Sharing Scheme and a Nutritionist. Watch this space.

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

As well as displaying completed works, there will be collections of drawings, development models and prototypes to explain the visual and technical influences and design philosophies behind each design area, be it in furniture design, sculptural installations or leather luggage.

“HAPPY CHRISTMAS” IN NOVEMBER?
As you might know, I find it unacceptable that Christmas Lights are switched on in the beginning of November. I love Christmas, but I don’t like the dilution of it. I can understand the worries of the shopping centres and shops and therefore the reason why they start earlier and earlier. The Dundrum Town Centre, for example (The worst offender of early Santa-ism on 06 Nov) has a lot of competition and therefore wants to get the parents and children first to come to them and that’s why there is a yearly competition between shopping centres who will have Santa arriving first. But understanding and condoning or agreeing are two separate things. And I actually think that the shopping centres are deluded about the increase in business an early start gets them. Do people really spend more if the Christmas lights are switched on earlier? Why would anyone do that? So, shopping centres are bad with their early Christmas lights, but imagine my surprise when I saw at an Insomnia branch a big sticker on the door “Happy Christmas to our Customers”. It is NOVEMBER!! Switch the lights on if you must, but at least wait with the “Happy Christmas” until we are closer! I officially declare that if anybody wishes me “Happy Christmas” they risk to get punched! :-P Oh and after mid December, you are MORE than welcome to wish me a Happy Christmas all the time. :-)

Enjoy your weekend! I am glad I got this Event Guide finished. Last night we had a Gospel Choir Gig in the Button Factory and earlier in the week I had hurt my back, so I was struggling getting this week’s newsletter finished. ;-)
Take care,

It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
