Hi all!

Culture Night is the big event of the week! Maybe even of the month! It is a brilliant evening with sooo many free events and you should make use of it as much as possible. It starts at 17:00 tonight and runs until 23:00. There is no way that you can go to all events, so you have to select some. If you have no idea what to do, but want to be part of it, go to Temple Bar and feel the buzz around the place and follow the masses of Culture Night enthusiasts.

The Temple Bar Cultural Trust is the main organiser of the Culture Night and I have to mention one person there today, because she is unfortunately leaving us in a few days. The charming Julie Momboisse worked for a number of years in the Temple Bar Cultural Trust and did a brilliant job. Among many other things, she was in charge of the relationship with and the information flow to the online community. Bloggers, Twitterers and people like myself, who write about events were kept informed by her and she could not have done a better job. Julie is going back to France and will definitely be missed, but, hey, it was great that she was here and I am not surprised that the French people want her back. ;-)

Last night facebook didn’t work for a few hours and Twitter was full of messages and concerns about it and while writing this week’s Event Guide I realised how many events now are publicised through Facebook. The ease of putting information on it far surpasses the traditional websites and if you are not a facebook user yet, you should think about it again. Facebook will become more and more relevant for event notifications. And if/when you are a facebook user, go to www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide and click on LIKE at the top of the page. I will use this page to remind you of some of the free events during the week and to update you in case I hear about changes to the information in this newsletter. 367 people already like this new Dublin Event Guide service. Join us and let’s see how fast we can make it to 1000!

Are you telling all your friends and colleagues about the Event Guide? The more people we are, the more relevant the Event Guide is to event organisers and it will result in more events and better information about events. Tell everybody! Spread the word! You can use the flyers I have prepared or tell me how else I can help your efforts: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf

Last Wednesday I was outside for a number of hours because of a project that has to do with my day job. It was an odd day, like most of the week: Torrential rain was followed by sunshine, which was followed by torrential rain again. I managed to stay dry because my 4 hours outside were just during the sunny period. In these few hours on the first day of autumn, I managed to get a slight sunburn and I thought nature is an amazing “thing”! This week’s Feel Good Slot reminds you of some of these amazing things around us: The Beauty of Nature www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KQvwSr6elI

This week not a single soul donated to support the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). :-o If YOU want to support my weekly work and want to make me smile ;-), you can donate here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm And – as an option – you can now chose a yearly “subscription” on that website as well whereby a 12 Euro donation will automatically be carried out every year.

This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-)

You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

Tonight I will obviously spend 6 hours at the Culture Night. :-) Tomorrow I plan to go to a workshop at the Gospel Festival in the Convention Centre. On Sunday I might have a look at the Dad’s Day Off event in Cabinteely out of pure curiosity, then the Dublin Flea Market and the Volunteer Fair are on my list and in the evening I will be at the Gardiner Street Gospel Mass. During the week there are FIVE events I would love to go to, but can’t because of other commitments: On Monday it is the Comedy Open Mic in Anseo, on Wednesday the UCD Space Science Lecture and the Brownbread Mixtapes event in the Stag’s Head and on Thursday I would love to hear the talk/lecture about the “Future of Transport in Dublin” and there is another lecture about “Hot Air Balloons”. I know my interests are wide spread and I need 48 hours per day, but there is soo much interesting stuff going on! ;-)

WRITING TRAIN CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP
Writing Train is the name of Writing Teacher Yvonne Cullen’s Writing Class and workshop business. As the founder of the Big Smoke Writing Factory in 2009 and a writing teacher in Dublin for 18 years, Yvonne gives tips and shares thoughts on writing on her facebook page (www.facebook.com/pages/Yvonne-Cullens-Writing-Train/102278509826901) and runs classes and workshops in a range of atmospheric Dublin City venues from City Arts Centre (Bachelors’ Walk) via Sweny’s Chemist’s (Lincoln Place) to the United Arts Club in Fitzwilliam Street. The new term starts now and a full list of courses and workshops can be found at www.yvonnecullen.com. For the launch of the new term, Yvonne is making one free place on the “Writing Train Tuesday – Class and Workshop” available. This event will run for 12 weeks from 05 Oct at 18:30-21:00 every Tuesday at Nora’s Room in Sweny’s Chemist, Lincoln Place. In addition another Dublin Event Guide reader can win a free place in the Writing Train “Begin to Write” Course, a 8 week course (18:30-21:00) from Mon 11 Oct at City Arts Centre, Bachelor’s Walk.
To be in with a chance to win one of these two free places you have to send an email to yvonnesworkshops@gmail.com. In the mail you have to state which course you would like to win a place for (Tuesday Class and Workshop OR Begin to Write Course) and you have to give a brief indication of why you would like a place in this class. The third element in your mail has to be an answer to the following question: On Page2 of the Writing Train PDF is a round object in front of a blue background. What is the round object? (Check yvonnecullen.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/web-brochure-42.pdf)
Please note: Your mail is sent to Yvonne, not to me and if you don’t want to be added to Writing Train’s e-mail on entering this competition, please say that in your entry. (If for any reason, the class to which this offer applies does not run, Writing Train will offer an alternative prize.)
The value of these prizes is huge, so thanks a lot to Yvonne Cullen!
The “Begin to Write” Course (8 weeks at 2.5 hours each class from Mon 11 Oct) is available for EUR 230 and will take place at the City Arts Centre, Bachelors’ Walk,
Dublin 1. And the “Tuesday Class and Workshop”, which provides a maximum of tuition and feedback.(12 weeks at 2.5 hours each class from Tues 05 Oct) is available for EUR 285 and will take place in Nora’s Room at Sweny’s Chemist’s, Lincoln Place, Dublin 2. Check out all other Writing Train workshops as well.

PETE COURTNEY – ALBUM LAUNCH – TICKET COMPETITION
Last chance: Pete Courtney, who was known in Ireland between 2001 and 2006 and had international success too, started recording “karma biscuits” in 2007 and has waited until now to release it “as he believes a socially fresh and positive cycle has returned and the music industries dynamics have favourably shifted. It is an album about one particular soul’s journey and how it maintains its spiritual strength and application of unconditional love to all relationship idioms, and to do it all with a contented smile on its face.” Karma biscuits will be available for download from September 24th onwards on iTunes, Napster, Nokia, Amazon, etc and on Thurs 30 Sept Peter will launch it in the Odessa Club in 13 Dame Court. The launch starts at 20:30 and tickets are EUR 10 and can be requested through bookings@petecourtney.com.
For the readers of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), Pete has made 5 pairs of tickets available and if you would like to be there when he launches his new album, enter the competition by sending a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject KARMA and your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 13:00 on Mon 27 Sept.

DANCING AT LUGHNASA – LA TOUCHE PLAYERS
The Theatre Company “La Touche Players” had provided a pair of tickets for their performance of Brian Friel’s “Dancing At Lughnasa”. From Tues 21 Sept – Sat 25 Sept, they are performing every evening at 20:00 in the Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1. “It is Brian Friel’s celebrated tale of a memorable harvest time in remote Donegal as seen through the eyes of a 7 year old boy. Spellbound by his mysterious uncle, a returned missionary, fleeting glimpses of his father and the magic of a Marconi wireless, Michael also senses foreboding and a time of change for his mother and four doting aunts. This modern classic is filled with love, humour, realisation and a telling insight into 1930s Ireland.” There are still a few tickets left for the performances tonight and on Saturday, but you have to hurry! Tickets are on sale at www.ticketoffice.ie/latouche for EUR 15/EUR 12 (plus booking fee).
The winner of the pair of tickets was Kevin McCarthy. Congratulations! www.facebook.com/latoucheplayers

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

______Dublin News______________

NEW GIG VENUE – GOODBYE PRAVDA
While the newspaper Pravda still exists in Russia, for many people it is a reminder of past decades when during the Cold War and the pre-Gorbatchov years “Pravda” was mentioned regularly in the news. Pravda in Dublin, the pub near the Ha’Penny Bridge (in 35 Lower Liffey Street) and not too far from Arnotts survived for a long long time, but its time has come to an end now. The pub was renovated recently and is now called “The Grand Social”. I am not convinced that the new name is a very smart choice, but I guess we better get used to it. The Grand Social was opened on 11 September and is now kitted out as a gig venue, like Whelan’s, with stage and equipment for life gigs. Up to 300 people fit into it. The website is still a bit empty: www.thegrandsocial.ie/

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL TO BE SOLD
The Four Seasons Hotel in Ballsbridge, once the symbol of wealthy Ireland, and still one of the most expensive hotels in Dublin is to be sold. It will stay open and will continue to do business, but with a loss of EUR 2mio last year, the current owners seemingly want to get rid of it fast. It did cost EUR 90mio to build it and it is expected that it will be sold for less than EUR 50 mio, so if you always wanted a hotel, now is your chance to get a bargain! ;-) www.rte.ie/business/2010/0920/fourseason.html

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARDS
The Ireland Involved Awards 2010 are designed to recognise and credit the wonderful work that people do voluntarily, both at home and abroad and the people from Volunteering Ireland asked me to tell you: “Do you know someone special who deserves a special Thank You? Nominate them for the Volunteer of the Year 2010 award! The Ireland Involved Awards 2010 aim to highlight and celebrate those outstanding individuals who give their time and energy voluntarily, and whose work makes a great difference to communities across the country. You may know someone through work or at home who volunteers and whom you feel deserves special recognition for giving their time. The awards are a great opportunity to acknowledge the fantastic work by volunteers. Nominate now at www.irelandinvolved.ie – the closing date for nominations is 01 October, with the gala awards event hosted by RTE’s Claire Byrne at the Mansion House in Dublin on 10 November.”
Writing the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is volunteering, isn’t it? ;-)

AUDITIONS FOR DUBLIN YOUTH DANCE COMPANY
The Dublin Youth Dance Company will be hosting auditions for new members on Sunday, 26 September, 2010. This will take place at Dance Theatre of Ireland’s Centre for Dance, Bloomfields Centre, Lower Georges Street, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. They are looking for committed and enthusiastic dancers, age 12 – 16 (Audition time: 11:00 – 13:30) and ages 17 – 26 (Audition time: 14:00-16:00), with experience in at least one dance form (e.g. contemporary, tap, ballet, hip-hop) or some other movement training. More details here www.dublinyouthdancecompany.com and here www.dlrevents.ie/dydc_audition.html

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 7000+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

More to come!

______Exhibitions_______________

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

MAGDA NOWACKA – CFCP
“Twenty Seven” is an exhibition of photographer Magda Nowacka, where she will show twenty seven of her favourite images to coincide with her 27th birthday. The exhibition takes place in the Centre for Creative Practises, 15 Pembroke Street Lower, Dublin 2. It will open on 30 Sept (19:00-21:00) and will be on show (12:00-18:00) until 07 Oct. www.magdanowacka.com and www.cfcp.ie Admission is free.

BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME – PRETTYVACANT
“Build It And They Will Come” will be on show from 23 Sept-10 Oct at 7 Sandymount Green, Dublin 4. PrettyvacanT was set up in 2009 by Louise Marlborough to repurpose empty buildings as temporary exhibition spaces for artists and the second exhibition from its new base in D4 is ‘Build It And They Will Come’. This exhibition unites and unleashes the talents of recent graduates Margaret Flynn, Jane Fogarty, Gareth Jenkins, Rebecca McNaughton and Dee Walsh. The exhibition showcases a diverse range of work- painting, drawing, sculpture and installation.
Open: Thurs-Sun 12:00-17:00 www.prettyvacantdublin.com

CULTURE NIGHT
Culture Night is here and I wrecked my head how I could feature it here in the Event Guide. There are 132 cultural venues in Dublin that take part, run events, stay longer open or invite to cultural activities. And after looking at all options I had to accept :-) that I can NOT do it better than the nice people from the Temple Bar Cultural Trust. Their programme brochure captures everything and you have to check it out.
I didn’t get a chance to do my schedule/timetable for tonight, so I can’t even tell you yet, what I will do.
So here is what you should do: Download the brochure and read through it and start marking the events you want to go to. culturenight.ie/docs/Programme2010.pdf You will NOT be able to do all and not even 10% of all events can be done. You have from 17:00-23:00, that’s 6 hours. If you spend just a short 30 min at each event and – for the moment – ignore the time needed to get to the next venue, you can only go to 12 events. Less than 10%! For this reason, it is important that you just select the few that interest you most and don’t worry about missing out on many many more. Next year you can do more. ;-)
The important thing is that you enjoy it and make the most out of this wonderful opportunity to experience the rich culture in our City.

CULTURE NIGHT – A FEW EVENTS
A few events that might interest you are listed below. Not as a specific recommendation but the reason for it is because the people running these events contacted me directly so I am trying to help them:
Literary readings will take place in traditional and unusual settings including the Trinity Long Room Hub, The Winding Stair Bookshop, Science Gallery and the Freemason’s Hall. The Irish Writers Centre will have a host of readings in a selection of Dublin’s literary pubs including Toners, The Duke and Teachers’ Club.
You can travel for free by bus and by boat to hear stories and tales by Dublin’s literary heroes. There’s free travel with Dublin Bus on Route B which will have storytelling by Storytellers of Ireland; you can get on board the Spirit of the Docklands for a free literary Liffey cruise; and if you’re walking by the Liffey and are passing Dublin’s literary bridges- James Joyce, Sean O’Casey or Samuel Beckett- you can stop off to hear presentations of the writers’ works at each bridge.
Exhibitions and demonstrations will take place at many renowned cultural venues including the Chester Beatty Library, Trinity College Library and the Central Catholic Library.
Children will have an opportunity to learn more about Dublin’s literary past with a Literary Treasure Hunt in Merrion Square and young readers and authors can visit an Open Studio evening in the National Library of Ireland to experience a virtual tour of the studio of a picture book artist. With a wide variety of genres represented, Dublin will be a true literary wonderland on Culture Night.
While the centre of the activities will be in Temple Bar, the events extend out much further:
+ IRISH MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
The band Jazzberries are spicing up the evening at IMMA with funk music from 19:00-20:00 and 21:00-22:00. The theme for the evening is “tented street party” which sounds cool. Dan F told me about this.
+ CITY COUNCIL AMPHITHEATRE
At the Dublin City Council Amphitheatre Outdoor Space. Dublin Civic Office Dublin, Civic Offices, Dublin 8, behind Christ Church Cathedral an evening of ” Polish, Slovak and Lithuanian traditional Music & Dance” will take place from 18:00-20:00. It is organised by Art Polonia (www.artpolonia.org) and two fold music groups will entertain you there.
+ CONTEMPORARY MUSIC CENTRE
The Contemporary Music Centre, 19 Fishamble Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 8 will open its entire building for the first time this year. A very special programme of music events including live performance, interactive installations and a multi-media exhibitions will be performed. I could write pages about the CMC events only. Have a look for SOME details here cmcireland.wordpress.com/2010/08/19/culture-night-preview/
+HUGH LANE GALLERY
The National Chamber Choir launches their Autumn /Winter Season of Concerts at the Hugh Lane Gallery at 18:30 with a free concert. www.hughlane.ie/whats_on_detail.php?id=574

IMRAM – IRISH LANGUAGE LITERATURE FESTIVAL
Imram, the Irish Language Literature Festival is still continuing until Wed 29 Sept in a variety of venues across Dublin. The word “imram” means a ‘voyage of discovery’ and the festival takes its audiences on a journey that reveals the depth and diversity of modern literature in Irish, through eclectic and imaginative events that fuse poetry, prose and music in lively venues. Imram also includes film, drama, puppetry, debates, lectures, and writing workshops for both adults and children. All events are in Irish and because of that, only a relatively small proportion of the Irish people and hardly any of us foreigners are targeted. The majority of events are free and you can find the complete list here imram.ie/en/imram-2010/imram-2010-events.html or you can download the brochure here www.imram.ie/images/stories/imram/FestivalBrochures/IMRAM2010.pdf

In addition to the market, there is outdoor entertainment every week on a truck stage and on Saturday performances of Longtails, Biatch and Photosonic Orchestra will take place. RANELAGH ARTS FESTIVAL
Starting on Fri 24 Sept with the Culture Night, the Ranelagh Arts Festival will continue until 03 October. It is a long festival in comparison to others, but the events are just more spread out. A day-by-day overview of events I here www.ranelagharts.org/raf2010_daybyday_web.pdf and you will see that this year many events are not free, which is a bit disappointing. Nevertheless, there are still a good few free events and you should have a look at the programme to see if you find something that you like. On www.ranelagharts.org/ you find a link to the full programme as well.

FRINGE FESTIVAL
The Fringe Festival started on 11 Sept and continues until 26 Sept. There are just a few more free (outdoor) events. None of the indoor events are free. Have a look at www.fringefest.com/ for details. Two of the free outdoor events are

FUTURE OF TRANSPORT IN DUBLIN – RDS ENERGY LECTURE
The next talk in the RDS Energy Lecture Series is “The Future of Transport in Dublin” by Michael Philips. The face of transportation in Dublin is set to change dramatically over the next number of years after the government recently confirmed that some €5.7 billion will be provided for two critical infrastructure projects; the Metro North and the Dart Underground. It is hoped that these two projects will finally enable people to shift from private to public transport and free future generations from the gridlock that cripples the greater Dublin area today.
Michael Philips will discuss the impact of these projects along with the continued work that is being carried out on the capital’s road and rail network in the RDS on Thurs 30 Sept at 19:00 in the RDS Minerva Suite.
Mr Michael Philips has been Dublin City Engineer since 1998 and also Director of Traffic since 2006. These roles involve the development and implementation of strategies for all engineering infrastructure to meet the needs of the city and the region. Some projects undertaken during this period include the Dublin Port Tunnel, Dublin Bay Wastewater Treatment Works and Quality Bus Corridors. Currently coordination of Transport 21 projects and the promotion of sustainable modes of transport are the main focus to achieving a successful mobility policy in the Dublin Region.
Admission to this interesting lecture is free. To book and for more information contact Paul Farrelly at industry@rds.ie. www.rds.ie/cat_event_detail.jsp?itemID=583174

THEATRE CENSORSHIP – LECTURE
Fernando Arrabal will lecture at the conference “Art made tongue-tied by authority. Theatre Censorship around the World”. This international conference brings together playwrights, directors and academics to discuss theatre censorship in a global context, from the restrictions imposed by authoritarian regimes in twentieth-century Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America, to the challenges to freedom of expression still present in democratic societies today.
The Spanish author Fernando Arrabal was born in Melilla (Spain) in 1932 and lives on France since 1955. His plays were banned from Spanish stages from 1968 until the end of dictatorship. Although he is one of Spain’s most controversial writers, he has received many international prizes and awards. Fernando Arrabal has published 12 novels, 6 collections of poems, 16 essays and epistles (among which the famous Letter to General Franco, published during the dictator’s lifetime), nearly 150 books for bibliophiles, and poems illustrated by Dalí, Picasso and Saura. He has also directed 7 full-length films and has worked in the visual arts. He is probably best-known for his dramatic production, which features nearly 70 plays. To date his complete dramatic works has been published in 19 volumes in France and has been translated into many languages and performed throughout the world. However, he remained a problem for the Franco regime and his plays were banned from the Spanish stages altogether from 1968 until the dictatorship came to an end.
The event will take place on Thurs 30 Sept at 19:00 in the Instituto Cervantes, Lincoln House, Lincoln Place, Dublin 2. dublin.cervantes.es/FichasCultura/Ficha65333_16_2.htm

______This is odd!!______________

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)

DOWN DOWN DOWN – HOW LOW CAN WE GO?
It is the duty of the opposition to point out mistakes, failures and inadequacies of the government and it is the job of the government to defend everything and not to admit even the most obvious screw-ups. So the Irish political parties perfectly fulfil their job description in that respect.
However, only making it worse and worse and seeing it darker and darker does not help anybody unless you want it to go worse. Michael Noonan, the Fine Gael (opposition) finance spokesman predicted that the Irish economy is getting even worse and the Taoiseach Brian Cowen (government) said this is wrong but admitted that the figures that the Central Statistics Office has provided are disappointing. (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2010/0923/breaking19.html)
Both politicians do what they have to do, but does it help ANYBODY? I don’t think it does. In my opinion no party, no government, no politician will manage to pull Ireland out of the hole. The white knight(s), the people that can save the country and rebuild it are NOT in political positions but are YOU and ME! Sure certain conditions need to be provided (loans need to be available etc) but only through initiatives of companies and individuals we will get the country back on track. However for this SUPPORTIVE and POSITIVE comments are needed, because let’s be clear on that, there are definitely lots of opportunities out there but would anybody be brave enough to risk anything when EVERY piece of news is negative?
The thinking needs to change, then we will have a chance again, but by looking further down and down and down, will stay in the mess.
What can YOU do to change the thinking? Can you change the way YOU talk about the challenges to others?

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
