Hi all!

I went to the Convention Centre Dublin for last Sunday’s Open Day and since it can take 2500 people in the auditorium and 4000 in another room, I was wondering what event for the Dublin Event Guide Community we could run there! :-) I am sure renting the venue is really really expensive, but lets dream for a moment. What could we do in a room that takes 2500 people and would we be able to fill that room? Do you have any suggestions? Let me know at dublineventguide@gmail.com

For quite some time I had a “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” Facebook group, but groups are a little clumsy and while it was great some years ago when facebook ranked my group as the most popular in Ireland and lots of people found the Event Guide that way, it is now time to re-assess. The group has over 4000 members, so many of you are in it, but it makes a lot more sense to use a Facebook PAGE now. This week you should get the Event Guide a good bit before the more recent release time. Because there is so much to write about AND to research (I am searching through hundreds of websites every Thursday night to find all the free events!) the time when I finish the Event Guide is now relatively late. I am trying to improve on it, but it is not easy! This week I pre-wrote a lot already on Tuesday and Wednesday because today and tomorrow I will be at The Business Summit in the K Club in Kildare. (If you want to follow the event, you can do so on Fri and Sat on twitter.com/TheBizSummit). Maybe this will work better. The big downside is, though, that instead of writing the Event Guide in one night, I will have to work nearly EVERY night of the week on it. Hmmm, that’s a high price to pay! :-P

This Friday and Saturday I will be at The Business Summit (www.thebusinesssummit.com) in Kildare, so I will unfortunately miss the Dublin Port Open Day on Saturday and the different, but still interesting sounding “Moonwatch” in Bray. On Sunday I will catch up with some friends and in the evening the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, who I do sound engineering for, will be back after a long summer break. Come to experience this unique and uplifting weekly mass. Even if church is normally not your thing you are more than welcome to spend an hour reflecting about your life while enjoying inspirational Gospel Music throughout the mass. On Wednesday I will try to go to the Living Streets Festival and then on Friday I will be busy from 17:00-23:00 with the Culture Night. Looking forward to it!

ONE STOP SELF PUBLISHING CONFERENCE

FRIENDS IN IRELAND – FUNDRAISER
Network Dublin, the Organisation for Women in Business, the Professions and the Arts were raising funds for the charity Friends in Ireland, a charity caring for orphans in South Africa affected by HIV/AIDS, with the help of award winning chef Neven Maguire. DUBLIN BIKES – GREAT NEWS
The Dublin Bikes, the odd looking blue-ish bikes that are available for everyone, are celebrating their first birthday and it comes with great news. The 450 bikes were used for an impressive total of 1,101,877 journeys in the last 12 months and 28,200 users have signed up for a 12 month subscription. This is hugely more successful than what was initially expected. Imagine, before the scheme started the planners were HOPING to get between 1,500 and 2,000 people to sign up in the first year…and it is actually 28,200!
Being such a success, now it is time to expand. The first step will be 100 more bikes and 4 more bike stations (Smithfield, Eccles Street, Harcourt Terrace, Charlemont Mall). And after that I hope that the scheme will expand further to the periphery of Dublin: Grand Canal Dock, Heuston Station, IFSC, Ballsbridge, Rathmines, Parnell Square are a number of locations that immediately come to mind. But that is just the start!
If you don’t have a Dublin Bike Card yet, have a look at www.dublinbikes.ie and remember that a Dublin Bike Card for one year is just EUR 10. You can use a bike as often as you want and the first 30 minutes every time are completely free. 95% of the 1 mio bike trips were free trips.

CHEAP IRISH HOTEL PRICES
For years Ireland was at the top of the wrong league tables. Whenever “expensive” was part of the survey, Ireland made it into the Top 10 or even Top 5. So it is great to be at the bottom of the table now when it comes to Hotel prices: Ireland is among the few countries that have the lowest hotel prices. I know that the hotels are not happy about it, but for the new average price of EUR 79 it finally becomes affordable again. Interestingly even the high season price at the D4 Hotels was EUR 49.10 for a room, so shop around if you have visitors coming.

PUB SALES FALL, DRINK SALES RISE
The Vintners Federation (the organisation of the pub owners) will probably cry into their cornflakes after reading this, but it seems the message is clear: Pub sales fell by 14% while at the same time the drink sales in off-licenses rose by 6.4% and the message is that people are not consuming less, they are just not accepting the crazy prices in pubs anymore. Some of you might have seen it, but if you are living in Ireland, have some interest in Irish economics and want to know what went wrong with the Irish economy, you have to watch the two parts of “Freefall” a documentary about the banking crisis in Ireland. In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! CUBA MIA – INSTITUTO CERVANTES
Cuba mía (My Cuba) shows 80 black-and-white photographs taken in 1964 by the Mexican photographer Rodrigo Moya and exhibited for the first time to mark the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution. They present the hopes and dreams of the revolution during the early years of the Cuban revolution and include a dozen rare photographs of Ernesto Che Guevara during his time as Cuban Minister of Industry. KENNETH LAMBERT – JAMESTOWN STUDIOS
“The Flow of Time” is the exhibition by Kenneth Lambert in the Jamestown Studios, Inchicore. It will be on show from 20 Sept-03 Oct (Mon-Sat 12:00-17:00) and the opening will be on Sat 18 Sept from 18:00-20:00 with guest speaker Mick O’Dea of the RHA. The exhibition shows over 60 drawings, sculptures & animations created over the past eight years. This work is at times autobiographical, and at other times more concerned with the textural finish and creative process itself. www.kennethlambert.ie.

SUSANNE KEANE – PEARSE CENTRE
“Island Space” is an exhibition of oil paintings by Susanne Keane in the Pearse Centre, 27 Pearse Street, Dublin 2. The exhibition will be opened at 18:30 on Thurs 23 Sept and will then run until Thurs 30 Sept (Open Mon-Fri 12:00-17:00). “The abstract paintings of Susanne Keane are inspired by her love of the sea and her intimate knowledge of a small island in Connemara. NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION – ARTS CAMPAIGN
On Fri 17 Sept the National Campaign for the Arts (NCFA) will have a National Day of Action during which the organisation will demand that the current arts funding will not be reduced and that more funds will be made available. In Dublin the Irish Writers’ Centre is planning an event and you can find all the details on

I have to admit that I find it difficult to support the NCFA’s demands fully. I am VERY much supportive and in favour of all sorts of arts and I do know that funding is required in a lot of areas. But I think that ALL spending areas need to be checked and some tough decisions are needed to get back on track again. Sure the banks should not have been bailed out, but once cuts need to made it can’t be that one or some areas will stay completely unaffected.

IMRAM – IRISH LANGUAGE LITERATURE FESTIVAL
Imram, the Irish Language Literature Festival is taking place from Tues 14 Sept – Wed 29 Sept in a variety of venues across Dublin. The word “imram” means a ‘voyage of discovery’ and the festival takes its audiences on a journey that reveals the depth and diversity of modern literature in Irish, through eclectic and imaginative events that fuse poetry, prose and music in lively venues. Imram also includes film, drama, puppetry, debates, lectures, and writing workshops for both adults and children. All events are in Irish and because of that, only a relatively small proportion of the Irish people and hardly any of us foreigners are targeted. POLISH SOLIDARITY – LECTURE – EU HOUSE
The Polish Embassy in Dublin is inviting to an event with Prof. Norman Davies. He will talk about ‘The Roots and the Legacy of Solidarity’, commemorating the 30 years of Solidarity the hugely influential and important anti-government movement. The event in Dublin will take place on Fri 17 Sept at 18:30 and will be in the European House in 18 Dawson Street, Dublin 2. MOLECULAR CLOUDS IN OUR GALAXY – IRISH ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY
“The Formation of Molecular Clouds in our Galaxy” by Speaker Professor Michael Burton, School of Physics, University of New South Wales, Australia is a lecture in the Dunsink Observatory on Fri 17 Sept at 20:00 that as been organised by the Irish Astronomical Society. It is not stated if there any admission charges, but in the past similar events were free, so I hope it will be the same this time. LIVING STREETS FESTIVAL – GEORGE’S STREET AREA
On Wed 22 Sept from 12:00-22:00 the Living Streets Festival will take place on South William Street, Drury Street, Fade Street, Coppinger Row and Castle Market, this is the area between Powerscourt Townhouse and South Great George’s Street. The festival is a day long event as part of the European Mobility Week 2010 and is sponsored (and kept secret!) by Dublin City Council. The festival is “a celebration of sustainable travel and the positive use of our urban spaces”, it is traffic free and the roads will be closed to vehicles all day to allow you to enjoy the city streets.
I was not able to find a schedule/timetable and considering that it is a weekday, you might want to know if you can catch any of the events in your lunchbreak or after work. I wish I could tell you!
There will be free entertainment including live music, live stand up comedy and an on street exhibition of cargo bikes and other innovative methods of urban transport for people and goods, we just don’t know when.
The music will be by Rory Faithfield, the Niall Toner Band (Bluegrass) and the Hot Club of Dublin (Jazz) on the main stage on Drury Street. A live stand up session featuring Andrew Stanley, Damien Clark, Eric Lalor and Fred Cooke will take place an and outdoor exhibition of “Bikes as Urban Transport” will be somewhere. At 20:00 a free outdoor movie (WHICH film??) will be shown on Fade Street (Where the Market Bar is) and eco friendly seats for you to take away after the show will be provided.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT – YOUTH CONFERENCE
The “Youth for Sustainable Development Conference 2010 – Learning to Change our World” will take place in Cultivate at the Greenhouse, 17 St Andrew St, Dublin 2 on Wed 22 Sept from 10:00-16:00. It is a conference for Youth Workers, Youth Leaders, Teachers and Educators from Community Organisations and NGOs. Young people aged 15-18 are also warmly invited to attend with their adult support workers. You are invited to a day of learning and reflection through workshops, keynote speeches, exhibition of projects and interactive activities. Share your ideas and experience, and learn from others
Environment, development, economics, sustainability, inclusion, justice, cultural diversity will be explored. REFRESH DUBLIN – SCIENCE GALLERY
Refresh Dublin is a community of designers & developers working to refresh the creative, technical & professional culture of New Media in Dublin. And Refresh Dublin is an event that promotes design, technology, usability and standards. The intent of Refresh Dublin is to provide a cross-discipline insight into all things design, interactive, creative and technical, so that different disciplines can learn from each other. The next event takes place on Wed 22 Sept at 18:30 in the Science Gallery at the back of Trinity College, near to Pease Street DART station. ARTHUR’S DAY
I am reluctant using this term because it is a pure marketing stunt of Guinness. Arthur Guinness was not born on that day nor did he die on that day nor did anything else remarkable happen on 23 September 1759. It is all just a marketing gimmick, and unfortunately there is not even a single free event coming from this. All events are EUR 10 and some of the music gigs are cheap at that price. However some venues that normally provide free live entertainment will charge EUR 10 as well on that day, so I can’t see the greatness of this day at all.

INDIAN MINIATURE PAINTINGS – CHESTER BEATTY LIBRARY

JUDITH ZANDER – READING – GOETHE INSTITUT
Judith Zander will be for a book reading in German in the Goethe Institut, 37 Merriosn Sq, Dublin 2 on Thurs 23 Sept from 18:30. Admission is free. In her first novel “Dinge, die wir heute sagten” (Shortlist for the German Book Prize) Judith Zander continues the great narrative power of Northern Germany represented by names like Uwe Johnson and Wolfgang Koeppen. The young author writes about Bresekow, a quiet village in Vorpommern, about home and hell: old Mrs. Hanske has died and her daughter Ingrid is coming back from far away Ireland to attend the funeral. Her visit changes a lot in the village, it makes the people talk and generates questions about their current lives and previous complications.

FOMACS INTERVIEW – CHESTER BEATTY LIBRARY
The Forum on Migration and Communications is inviting to an event on Fri 24 Sept from 12:30-14:00 in the Chester Beatty Library in the garden of Dublin Castle. At this Public Interview with Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, Susan McKay, Director of the National Women’s Council will conduct the interview with Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, UK based broadcast journalist, writer and public speaker on race and cultural identities. Yasmin came to the UK in 1972 from Uganda and is now a journalist who has written for The Guardian, Observer, The New York Times, Time Magazine, Newsweek, The Evening Standard, The Mail and other newspapers and is a regular columnist on The Independent and London’s Evening Standard. She is also a radio and television broadcaster and author of No Place Like Home, an autobiographical account of a twice-removed immigrant. In 2000 she published Who Do We Think We Are? – an acclaimed book on the state of the British nation, in addition to After Multiculturalism which looks at the globalised future. CULTURE NIGHT
One of the biggest and most interesting events every year is the Culture Night, when hundreds of free events take place in and around Dublin. For one night only Culture Night gives you free access to many venues that normally are not free and in many other venues special entertainment will be provided on that night only. Most events start after normal working hours and continue until late and most museums, galleries etc are open until late. There are so many events that it is just too much to list them here, but you can download the programme here culturenight.ie/docs/Programme2010.pdf. I have to admit that I strategically plan that evening because otherwise you will not see much. So, get the brochure and start planning your Culture Night. There are even free Culture Night buses interconnecting areas with events. So make sure that you don’t miss this event! If I get a chance I will list a few event highlights in next week’s Event Guide with Cutlure Night running from 17:00-23:00, the Event Guide will reach you before you set out, but I strongly recommend that you have a look at the brochure before that! culturenight.ie/

RANLEAGH ARTS FESTIVAL
Starting on Fri 24 Sept with the Culture Night, the Ranelagh Arts Festival will continue until 03 October. DUBLIN INTERNATIONAL GOSPEL MUSIC FESTIVAL
On Sat 25 Sept the first Dublin International Gospel Music Festival will take place in the Convention Centre Dublin and during the day a number of free workshops are provided. The workshops are

The website still needs some more information to be useful, but you can find it here www.dublingospelmusicfestival.com There is a Gospel Concert (not free: EUR 28) in the evening with a number of Gospel Choirs (Discovery Gospel Choir, Dublin Gospel Choir, etc) but the website doesn’t provide too many details yet.

YELP OPEN PARTY – SCIENCE GALLERY
YELP is a review website, which only relatively recently came to Ireland. Unlike Tripadvisor or some hotel sites, you can’t just review one area, but you can review virtually everything on Yelp. To write reviews you have to be a member of the website and for all the members Yelp is now organising a party. If you are a member or want to become a member and want to be part of this party on Sat 25 Sept from 18:00-20:00 in the Science Gallery go to www.yelp.ie/events/dublin-yelp-goes-back-to-the-future and click on the RSVP button at the top on the right hand side. All the details about the party are on the same website.
There will be a dance room, a taste room where you can taste food and drink, a chill out room, an elbow room where you can do Yoga and a Beauty Room. The programme seems quite full for just a 2 hour event, but all is free, so if you are a Yelp member, you can try it out.

INTRODUCTION TO MEMOIR WRITING – WORKSHOP
On Thurs 30 Sept the free workshop “Introduction to Memoir Writing” will take place in the National Library. Irene Graham is a writer and the creator of the Creative Writer’s Workshop and founder of the Memoir Writing Club. Her book, The Memoir Writing Workbook, is the basis for this workshop and throughout the workshop Irene will guide the participants through the elements of memoir writing using her innovative Memoir Map from The Memoir Writing Workbook. You will engage with numerous right-brain/left-brain exercises and visual writing techniques from the workbook and learn how to use them on an ongoing basis to evoke and enhance memory recall. You will also learn the importance of structure and engage in discussions on truth and how to incorporate the retrospective voice into your memoir.

DUBLIN CITY EVENTS – PSSSST DON’T TELL ANYBODY!
It was Wednesday night and by a pure coincidence I am driving through South Great Georges Street. Suddenly I spot some signs on poles that announce a street closure on 22 Sept and these signs are headlined with “Living Streets Festival”. A festival in Dublin and I hadn’t heard about it? Me who is trawling through nearly 300 webpages every Thursday night? :-O A friend of mine was in the car with me and she realised that I was distracted by this sign. And I asked her – she lives in the street – if she had heard about the “Living Streets Festival”. She hadn’t! So if neither the person living locally nor the person constantly SEARCHING for events knows about an event, then what chance does the rest of the population have???
Well later on I investigated further and found out that it is an event in the context of the European car free day – a day which for years got the worst possible treatment in Dublin. And I found out that the event is run by Dublin City (Now I knew why nobody heard about it!) and that an external event management company is paid to organise and run it.
So, Dublin City is spending money on running an event that they don’t tell us about? Ok, I know this is not an unheard of situation, but when will it stop? When will they realise that TELLING people is IMPORTANT!?!?!?! Incredible!
