———————————————————————
Hi all!
There are so many things on this week that I will try to keep this introduction really short. Thanks to all who came last Sunday to our Elvis Concert. The Olympia was full and it was definitely one of our best concerts! We had lots of fun. If you STILL haven’t seen us, watch this space, I will let you know about upcoming gigs.
The highlight for the coming weeks are the Heritage Week, the Viking Festival and – yes, I will not get tired promoting it – Shadaan Felfeli’s play “The Virgi n and the Vulture”. Make sure that you don’t miss this amazing play. I am already looking forward to it. If you can’t remember what I was talking about last week, then check the Competition Section or check this link: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=110301872358707 I promise you, you will love it! Oh, just in case some of you are surprised to see that it was me who set up the Event Page on Facebook: I did that because Shadaan has no website at the moment and to let people know it is easier sometimes to send them to a website. And apart from that I am a big fan of his play, but you MIGHT have realised that already. :-P

Every week more people are joining our exclusive ;-) Dublin Event Guide Community. We are firmly above 7000 and are growing steadily. All this is thanks to you, because you spread the word, let your friends know and “sell” the Event Guide to them. Thank you for doing that! Thank you for telling people and for suggesting to them to sign up as well. They only have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com to get added to the distribution list and this could help you to inform them:

This week’s Feel Good Slot film is for all teachers. And if you don’t teach in a school but have been or will be a parent, uncle, aunt, coach, trainer or anyone else that teaches things to other people, you should have a look at it as it is for you as well: www.heartofateachermovie.com/ Be proud of what you do!!

This week Pia O. donated to support the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and her contribution is hugely appreciated. If you want to support my weekly work too and want to make me smile ;-), you can donate here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm And – as an option – you can now chose a yearly “subscription” on that website as well whereby a 12 Euro donation will automatically be carried out every year.
This newsletter is a spare-time activity of mine for which I am not paid. It is not a commercial project and if you like it, you are invited to help with a donation. You can donate as much as you want or can, but if you need some guidance, maybe consider just ONE Euro per month or – to make it more practical – a donation of 12 Euro per year (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). Where else can you get such a vast amount of useful information for just 25 cent. ;-)
You can donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer money to my bank, just drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

______Joerg’s Picks______________
This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

BLIND MAN WALKING – FILM SCREENING – IFI
Blind Man Walking might well be the most inspirational story of the year. At the age of 22, Mark Pollock, a handsome young athlete and academic, suddenly lost his sight. He was plunged into darkness and depression but rebuilt his life over the next ten years. On the tenth anniversary of his sight-loss he takes on the toughest challenge of his life in attempting to become the first blind man to race to the South Pole.
This documentary by Ross Whitaker (Saviours, Bye Bye Now) follows Mark for the anniversary year of losing his sight, throughout his training and his attempt to get to the South Pole. What unfolds is a highly personal, often emotional and ultimately uplifting story told against the epic backdrop of the Antarctic. Director Ross Whitaker will participate in a post-screening Q&A.The film screening will take place in the Irish Film Institute on Sunday 22 August at 13:30 and you can book tickets here

This week I will definitely go to some Heritage Week events, I am not sure yet which, because I haven’t checked the complete programme myself, but the Glasnevin Cemetery tour is really interesting and the I would love to climb up the St. Patrick’s Cathedral clock tower. .. among other things! Then I will either on Saturday or Sunday spend some time at the Viking Festival and will have a look at the Fair Ground Attraction on Sunday on Meeting House Square. On Tuesday I will be without fail at Shadaan Felfeli’s play “The Virgi n and the Vulture” (check the competition section for details!) And friends told me that the Brownbread Mixtape event on Wednesday is really good. Because I usually have training on Wednesdays, I was never able to make it but ONE day I will go there. :-)

THE VIRGIN AND THE VULTURE – TICKETS
I told you last week about Shadaan Felfeli’s play. I saw it before and thought it was amazing and I think every single one of you would like it as long as you have retained a tiny bit of child-like imagination. “The Virgi n and the Vulture” tells the fascinating tale of a Parsi storyteller who finds it hard to get out of bed one sunny Indian afternoon, and Shadaan has the talent to tell this story in such colourful and rich language that you feel you are in the middle of it. The winners of the two pairs of tickets are by coincidence two Sarahs: Sarah O’Farrell and Sarah Ann Hanrahan! Congratulations! But even if you didn’t win, I hope that many of you will make it to the play on Monday or Tuesday (I will be there on Tuesday at 20:00). Tickets will be available at the door, but if you want to make sure that you will get in, send a mail to virginandvulture@gmail.com specifying for which of the four performances you would like to reserve tickets. The plays are on Mon 23 Aug and Tues 24 Aug, Shadaan will perform his play twice on each evening (18:00 and 20:00) in the Pearse Centre (next to the Trinity Capital Hotel) in Pearse Street. Tickets are EUR 10. www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=110301872358707
EYP MADHATTER TEA PARTY & FASHION SHOW
EYP (European Young Professionals) are organising the second Tea party & Fashion Show on Fri 20 Aug in the new Gibson Hotel in the Point Village. Sean Boland, DJ Byron and lots of Irish Models will be there and all details about the event are here
www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=136819493025635 Tickets are EUR 8 or EUR10. The ticket that EYP made available, was won by Gwen Ollivier! Congrats!
LUGHNASA BOTTLED BEER FESTIVAL
Deveney’s of Dundrum is inviting you to the first Irish Bottle Beer Festival, the “Lughnasa Bottled Beer Festival” on 20 August 2010 from 17:00-22:00 in the Pod Complex, Harcourt Street, Dublin 2. This event brings 200 bottled beers from around the World to one venue. The aim of the event is to educate through tasting and informal beer advice from some of the best brewers and beer specialists from all over
Europe. With entertainment by ”Prison Love”, the Irish Bluegrass Band, and Suzanne
Purcell and with food vendors on site, this will be the perfect event for all beer lovers. Tickets are EUR 20.00 and are available from Deveney’s of Dundrum’s website deveneysbeer.blogspot.com Check out deveneysbeer.blogspot.com or www.facebook.com/pages/Deveneys-Dundrum-Lughnasa-Beer-Festival-August-2010/125134090837601 or follow twitter.com/RuthDeveney
Ruth Deveney has made TWO pairs of tickets available for readers of the Dublin Event Guide and the winners are Melanie Tucker and Tadgh Fallon! Enjoy the beer!
All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

CULTURE NIGHT LAUNCHED
Last Wednesday, this year’s Culture Night programme was unveiled by the Temple Bar Cultural Trust (TBCT) and it is impressive! Culture Night 2010 will take place on 24 Sept and will extend to 20 cities, towns and counties. A record 132 cultural venues in Dublin will open their doors for free events on that Friday evening and I will tell you lots more about that special night. If you already want to have a look at the programme, check out www.culturenight.ie and mark the 24 Sept in your calendar. Oh, and when you see the posters etc in the coming weeks and admire the nice logo, you are admiring the young graphic designer Conor Lumsden’s work. I didn’t like last year’s Culture Night logo at all, but this year’s is really great. I think the Temple Bar Cultural Trust should stick with this one and stop changing the logo every year.

WOOD QUAY VENUE – CIVIC OFFICES
Many of you have no idea where the (relatively new) Wood Quay venue is, but you will see more and more events taking place there, so it is a good idea to know it: The Wood Quay Venue is in the basement of one of the Dublin Civic Offices buildings and you get there best from Fishamble Street where there is an walk way between Civic Offices buildings towards the Amphitheatre. The Amphitheatre is the round Amphitheatre-like construction between the Civic Offices building and Christ Church. When you walk along this walkway, then you will find the entrance to the Wood Quay Venue on the left. www.woodquayvenue.ie/ The venue contains a beautiful modern room for talks, concerts and exhibitions, called the City Wall Space and it contains the “My City Exhibition” (see below). The unique feature in the City Wall Space is an approx. 7metre long piece of the original Hiberno Viking City Wall dating from 1100AD. The wall forms a stunning backdrop in the City Wall Space.
MY CITY EXHIBITION
The “My City Exhibition” is a modern multimedia-rich permanent exhibition that provides information on Dublin City today, while also showcasing plans for the coherent future development of the City. A 3-D, interactive map of Dublin allows visitors to explore the projects and developments that will shape the future of the City.
There are six multimedia kiosks dealing with a different themes relating to the makeup of the City. The themes chosen are culture, enterprise, environment, movement, people and places. A seventh kiosk houses an interactive timeline display highlighting key points in the evolution of the City from 841 AD to date. The exhibition is open from 09:00-17:00 from Monday to Friday and it would be great if this could be extended to at least Saturday openings as otherwise the majority of us will unfortunately never see it! Admission is free. www.woodquayvenue.ie/myCity.php
HISTORY AND HERITAGE – SOUTH DUBLIN LIBRARIES
To celebrate the evolving history and heritage of South Dublin County, South Dublin Libraries are inviting to “History and Heritage 2010”, an “interesting, stimulating and evocative” range of events. The whole long list of events can be found here www.southdublinlibraries.ie/events You will be kept busy with that and will learn lots. A big thanks to Niamh N who regularly sends me really interesting event notices for you that I otherwise would probably not know about!
MCD & CIGARETTES and UK & ALCOHOL
I am neither a fan of cigarettes nor am I a big fan of the concert promoter MCD, but the newest trouble MCD got into is in my opinion far over the top. The anti-smoking organisation ASH is accusing MCD of only having one single brand of cigarettes available at Oxegen and of giving cigarettes away for free. Let’s celebrate the day MCD is giving anything away for free! ;-) But seriously: I was at an event this week where sandwiches were available for free, will the anti-obesity lobby soon demand that this terrible action will be forbidden? And free alcohol? I won’t even go there. But free soft-drinks could get the anti-obesity lobby on the plan as well! www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/mcd-reported-over-tobacco-promotion-claims-469997.html This is nearly as mad as the idea of having a minimum price for alcohol as it is demanded (and introduced) in the UK (www.independent.ie/breaking-news/national-news/call-for-minimum-alcohol-pricing-2304421.html). Yes, cigarettes and alcohol are bad for you and I neither smoke nor do I drink when I go out (I usually drive and the police keeps checking me!), but the only way of stopping people to use it should be to make it illegal. We see that high cigarette prices still haven’t eradicated smoking and the same is and will be true for alcohol consumption.
———Opportunities—————–
In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. The banks don’t help anymore, the government doesn’t want to help, so we have to help ourselves! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will help you if you have recently started a company and if you could do with spreading the word. I hope being mentioned here and being seen by the 7000+ readers of the Event Guide will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide and once you have made a nice bit of money, a donation would be very appreciated. ;-) (This offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages only. Established companies can contact me regarding very affordable advertisement options in the Dublin Event Guide.) If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.
More to come!

______Exhibitions_______________
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie. For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/exhib-lein/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

NATIONAL HERITAGE WEEK
From 21-29 Aug the National Heritage Week will take place in Ireland. It is a week packed full with events and the vast majority of the events are free (Some require pre-registration!). There are soo many events that I will not be able to list them. For this reason you have to check the detailed list yourself. I have included a number of them in this Event Guide, but it is only a tiny amount of all available events. Throughout whole Ireland there are more than 1000 events! The best resource for the listings are the downloadable event listings, which are excerpts from the printed Programme Booklet www.heritageweek.ie/index.php/whats-on/download-events-by-county-2/ 50,000 copies of the printed brochure were distributed in Ireland and the place where I got a copy was the main tourist information in St. Andrews Church in Suffolk Street. www.heritageweek.ie
There are soo many events and so many people asked if I would include their events, but it is just too much. A few examples: There is a series of lunchtime talks at the Guinness Archives, most museums will have special programmes, Pat Liddy will talk about the Heritage of Dublin in Bewley’s Café on Tue 24 Aug at 19:00. The film bananas on the breadboard will be screened in Bewley’s Café on Thurs 26 Aug at 19:00. The Botanical Garden in Glasnevin has lots of Heritage Weeks events announced: www.botanicgardens.ie/news/events.htm and Farmleigh House invites to walks and talks: www.farmleigh.ie/Events/Title,13763,en.html
The vast majority of events are free with one unimpressive exception: Most events in Christ Church Cathedral are NOT free, which is a big pity. Even Dublinia, the interesting Glasnevin Cemetery Tour and some tours in St. Patrick’s Cathedral are free.
I strongly recommend that you download the section of the Event Guide you are interested in here www.heritageweek.ie/index.php/whats-on/download-events-by-county-2/ and study it!
DUBLIN VIKING FESTIVAL – AMPHITHEATRE, WOOD QUAY
On Sat 21 + Sun 22 Aug this year’s Dublin Viking Festival will take place in the heart of Viking Dublin at the Amphitheatre between Christ Church and the Civic Offices on Wood Quay. There will be a Viking Village on site with battle re-enactments, Viking arts and crafts and cooking. Listen to Viking stories and learn how our Viking ancestors traded, lived and played. Take a walking tour of Viking Dublin, check out the sand sculptures in Dublin Castle, storytelling in City Hall or check out the My City / Medieval Dublin exhibition at the Wood Quay Venue. There will be fun for all the family with Viking art workshops, face painting, balloon modelling, Viking Archery at the Amphitheatre and even an outdoor screening of a Viking movie on Saturday and Sunday evenings in the Viking Village! www.dublinvikingfestival.ie
The detailed programme is here www.dublinvikingfestival.ie/festival-programme.html (The outdoor Viking Movie Screening is taking place at 17:30 on Sunday and at 18:30 on Saturday)
Not mentioned in the programme seems to be the performances in the Wood Quay Venue “What have the Vikings ever done for us?” a free entertaining and educational show this Saturday and Sunday at 13:00, 14:30, 15:30 and 16:30 featuring performances from Jane E. Wash, Oddie Braddell and Dylan McDonough directed by Simon Hubbard from Alive-O Productions. www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=128650087181159
CONTEMPORARY MUSIC FESTIVAL – MUSIC TRAIL
From Sat 21 Aug until Sun 29 Aug the Contemporary Music Centre (CMC) will animate streets with a music trail consisting of outdoor sound installations in the heart of medieval and Viking Dublin. The umbrella programme “Music in the Historic Quarter” consists of the Contemporary Music Centre Outdoor Music Trail and an event programme. Come and explore and experience music of many genres, through live performance and the very latest technology, both outdoors and indoors! An inner trail consisting of three locations (Gutter Bookshop, CMC in Fishamble Street and Civic Offices at the Christ Church Entrance) playing open air music runs daily from 13:00-16:00. An extended trail incorporating the first three locations plus two additional locations (Garden of Dublin Castle and St. Patricks Park) can be followed and listened to with a smartphone by downloading the free “Layar” application for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and Android devices. Go to www.cmc.ie/musictrail for further information and instructions. The full event programme is here www.cmc.ie/musictrail/events.cfm and an overview of all events is here:

______This is odd!!______________
Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
I AM MORE BOUTIQUE THAN YOU!
I am sure you have heard the title “Boutique Hotel”? It is usually a quite small hotel that is different, usually luxurious or quirky. Have you heard the term “Boutique Festival”? I heard it the first time in the context of the Castle Palooza festival. Castle Palooza is quite small with only 2000 tickets being sold and I can definitely see the “boutique-ness” of it. But imagine my surprise when I found an ad on entertainment.ie that says “Electric Picnic – Ireland’s premiere Boutique Festival”! Boutique Electric Picnic? I have never been to the Electric Picnic, but have only heard good things about it. However with more than 35,000 (!!) visitors I would definitely NOT call that “boutique”! Newspapers (www.corkindependent.com/entertainment/entertainment/electric-picnic/ in 3rd paragraph) and blogs (they shall remain nameless) have picked up this odd title “Ireland’s premiere Boutique Festival” to describe the Electric Picnic and I find that odd. It is like calling Arnold Schwarzenegger “petite”. Odd! Maybe it is just the misguided press that uses that tag? Well, it seems that even the organisers of the Electric Picnic are deluded: www.electricpicnic.ie/electric-picnic-announces-11-new-acts/ They don’t use the “Ireland’s premiere…” line, but call it in the 2nd paragraph the “original Boutique Music Festival”.

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
