Hi all!

STILL good weather! Sure there are/have been a few days with a bit more of a mixed bag of weather, but the temperatures are still up and we all know that at least occasionally we need some rain. So I am more than happy with it.
Nevertheless, though, I will leave you all for a few days and will travel to the South of Portugal for 2 days of holidays and 7 days of a training seminar. Since this is the first time in a long long time that I am away for a longer period, the question is/was what will happen to Event Guide No. 160 next week! Will it just not happen? Some publications to that, they take holidays! Hmmmm. Or will I still produce an Event Guide? Maybe while on holidays?
One of my much cherished friends suggested that I should NOT send an Event Guide, because by not sending it, you would appreciate it more when you receive the newsletter in the remaining 51 weeks of a year. Well, I have to tell you that I did defend your corner and told my friend that many of you (maybe not all, but the majority!) would prefer to get an Event Guide and that after having never missed a week for more than 3 years, I have a reputation to uphold! :-) Am I right? Over the last few weeks an increasing number of “free events with suggested donation” have come to my attention and I was wondering if I should include them in this Event Guide for Free Events, or if they should not qualify for inclusion. If an organiser just invites ANY donations, I would include their event, so the question is if the situation changes materially by suggesting the amount to donate. My decision is to include events that come with a suggested donation “price tag” for the moment and to re-visit this issue at a later stage. I totally know that not everything in life can be free and – as you hear from me regularly – even this free “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” does very much appreciate your donations so that I can cover the cost and hopefully improve it more and more. So, if you are planning an event, consider this new approach: “Free with suggested donation of x Euro” and unless I find out that the “suggestion” was/is stronger than what most people mean with “suggestion”, I will include your event here.

This week I will unfortunately not be able to go to a single event. On Saturday I will be at a wedding (Congrats to Elizabeth and Shay!) and then on Sunday I will leave Ireland for a few days. So no events this week for me.
However, if I were here I would definitely go to some of the Dublin Garden Squares Events on Saturday, I would check out the PhotoIreland Festival events and I would without a doubt go to the Kings of Concrete either on Saturday or Sunday.
On Sunday the Trad Fest in Temple Bar and the Vertigo Jazz Trio would get my attention and during the week I would go to the Green Drinks on Tuesday. The new Science Gallery exhibition is worth a visit I hear, but it won’t run away yet, so I will visit that when I am back in the country again. ;-)

WEDDING SINGERS – MUSICAL – CIVIC THEATRE TALLAGHT
The Greenhills Variety Group is one of the longest-running musical societies in Dublin – they are 50 years young this year! To celebrate, they are staging the funny musical “The Wedding Singer” which runs from Mon 05 July to Sat 10 July in the Civic Theatre in Tallaght. IRISH FOOD PRICES SECOND HIGHEST IN EUROPE
It is not really a surprise to us who have to pay exorbitant prices when we go to a supermarket, but it is shocking that the prices in Ireland are THAT exaggerated. Only Denmark has higher prices (40% above average) than Ireland’s 29% above average. Prices in the UK are 3% below average. Very very high alcohol and cigarette prices (due to the high taxes) will have impacted the average negatively, but even without this distortion I would guess that Ireland is among the most expensive countries.

NEW DUBLIN MAYOR
A new mayor for Dublin has been elected during the week.
Is that important news? Not at all! Well, at least not yet! Once the Mayor will be elected by the citizens of Dublin and once the Mayor has some impact and responsibility then it will be relevant news. But currently the Mayor is not much more than the person to open shops and exhibitions and who lights Christmas trees and welcomes official foreign visitors to Dublin. He is elected by the City Councillors and they elect a new one (from a different party!) every year. The city is run by a “City Manager” and NOT by the mayor.
Allegedly the properly and directly elected Mayor will be elected in October (www.independent.ie/national-news/election-of-mayor-set-for-october-2230839.html), however the mayor who was appointed this week is talking about what he will do in “the year ahead”. (www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/breaking/2010/0628/breaking69.html) Let’s hope he is wrong – for the sake of democracy.

FOCUS IRELAND TRIATHLON – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Focus Ireland Fundraising Triathlon is taking place on Sun 01 Aug at Dún Laoghaire Harbour and Focus Ireland needs 100 volunteers to make the race happen. You don’t need to have any triathlon/sports experience but will play a key role in helping out with registration, directions and event safety by warning people that there is a race in progress and by issuing directions to event participants. You will be needed from 06:00-13:00 and will be provided with a Triathlon t-shirt and goodie bag, and will be invited to the awards ceremony which will take place on the East Pier at 12.00. REVISITED PLACES – EUROPEAN UNION HOUSE
The German Embassy Dublin presents an exhibition called ‘Wiederbesuchte Orte’ (Revisited Places) at the European Commission (European Union House, Dublin) from 05-16 July (09:00-17:00) weekdays only. The exhibited posters will show how much the reunification of Germany has affected towns and landscapes. All photographs were taken between 1990 and 2008 and are commented on in English.

HAITI LIVES – PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION – POWERSCOURT TOWN CENTRE
Oxfam Ireland invites to “Haiti Lives”, a photography exhibition in Powerscourt Town Centre, inspired by the unyielding spirit of the Haitian people. From 30 June until 31 July the exhibition will show the daily lives in Haiti in the aftermath of January 2010’s devastating earthquake. The exhibition comprises of 30 images by award-winning American photojournalist Ami Vitale; Jane Beesley, who works as a specialist communications officer for Oxfam covering both sudden and ongoing humanitarian crises and Jorge Silva from Reuters. The earthquake that struck Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, killed an estimated 230,000 people, left more than one million others homeless and much of the capital. Port-au-Prince in ruins. These remarkable images depict how Oxfam’s work in Haiti is helping people to re-build their lives. www.oxfamireland.org

PHOTOIRELAND FESTIVAL
PhotoIreland, Ireland’s International Festival of Photography and Visual Culture, is taking place from 01-11 July throughout Dublin. In the last years there has been an increase in the number of photographic exhibitions held in Ireland, and many museums and galleries have already planned very important exhibitions for the coming months. However, there is no single event in Ireland that unifies, strengthen or celebrates their effort in the cultivation of a photographic literacy. Although there is a strong support for other artistic practices, there has never been an International Photographic Festival held in Ireland.
PhotoIreland aims to become Ireland’s International Festival for Photography. It will showcase the work of those photographers and artists, national and international, whose critical practice goes from a traditional approach to the medium, to those who question its technical and ideological boundaries, but whose work help us to understand this ever present medium.
An exciting programme of more than 25 exhibitions from Irish and International photographers and many talks, discussions and workshops will be part of the festival and most of the events are free. If you are interested in photography, this is definitely an event for you. TCD-UCD INNOVATION ACADEMY – TALK
Dr. Kristina Johnson, U.S. Under Secretary of Energy and former Provost of John Hopkins University will talk at the TCD-UCD Innovation Academy (The Innovation Academy, Foster Place, College Green, Dublin 2) on Fri 02 July from 11:00 – 12:00. At the U.S. Department of Energy, she is responsible for promoting energy efficiency and coordinating research with commercial development and use. As an academic, Dr. Johnson is an expert in liquid crystal electro-optics, and her best known research involves “smart pixel arrays.” Her reputation is distinguished at the intersection of academic engineering and real-market entrepreneurship. DUBLIN GARDEN SQUARES DAY
The Dublin Civic Trust will host the first Dublin Garden Squares Day on Sat 03 July. The event aims to raise awareness of and celebrate the beauty, heritage and diversity of Dublin’s green, historic garden squares. The idea was initiated in London and now similar events are held in other European cities. It all starts at 10:00 on Sat with walking tours, live performances, stalls and children’s events. Dublin Garden Squares Day will show how 18th Century Dublin was designed as an integrated city where the city core was valued as a high quality living space.
+ Merrion Square: the highlight of the day will be the release of a hot air balloon (at 16:30) to commemorate the hydrogen balloon flight by Richard Crosbie, Ireland’s first aviator, in July 1785. The square will also host Imaginosity, children’s street games (hopscotch, throw rings, sack race and hula hoop) and Punch & Judy with Conor Lambert’s Custard Pie Theatre Company. Rediscover the garden and buildings of the square with guided walks with tree specialist Joe McConville and conservation architect Nicki Matthews.
+ Fitzwilliam Square will enjoy an historical walking tour, adult painting classes and a performance of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.
+ St Stephen’s Green will come alive with Tango Argentino at the bandstand, a Simultaneous Chess Exhibition and musical performances. There will also be tours of the gardens and architecture of the Green.

STREET GAMES – IMAGINOSITY
On Sat 03 July from 13:00-15:00 Imaginosity, the Children’s Museum in Sandyford will cooperate with the Dublin Georgian House Museum in Fitzwilliam Street “Number 29” to provide a series of free creative family games and workshops.
This unique summer programme (which will start this week and will continue until 21 Aug) will allow participants to reflect on the typical activities that Dublin children would have engaged in through the 1800s; many of which are still played today. BIORHYTHM: MUSIC AND THE BODY – SCIENCE GALLERY
From 02 July until 01 October, the Science Gallery will show the new exhibition “Biorhythm: Music and the Body”. Music is a central part of the human experience, but what is the natural force that drives us to sing, strum, drum and dance? What is the scientific basis of whistling, humming and toe-tapping?
From an acoustic bed to sonic tables and experiments on your emotional response to pop music, Science Gallery’s Summer exhibition “Biorhythm” will allow you to feel how music moves your body through an interactive bazaar of unique sonic experiences, installations, experiments and performances from musicians, engineers and neuroscientists from around the world. Between the Liffey and Christ Church are the Dublin Civic Offices and on that site is the so-called Amphitheatre. This is the location were on Sat&Sun 03-04 July the Kings of Concrete event will take place. Kings of Concrete is an Urban Culture festival with graffiti, BMXing, skate boards, break dancing, parcour, inline rail, beatboxing, capoeira, freestyle football and a few more activities all part of the event. The days are full of different things and if urban culture interests you or if any of the things I have mentioned in the previous sentence is your thing, then you have to go to the Amphitheatre this weekend. Captain Americas in the Blanchardstown Retail Park is celebrating the 4th of July, Independence Day. Laura Williams told me that she is organising a charity booksale in aid of the Child Health Project. All kinds of books will be sold at prices ranging from 50 cent to EUR 5. THE SUMMER SENSATIONAL – TEMPLE BAR
“The Summer Sensational” is this year’s Temple Bar Summer festival it is a family friendly event that has something to offer for every age group. PRESERVATION ADVISORY CENTRE – SEMINAR
On Tues 13 July the National Library of Ireland in Kildare Street is running a free seminar “Preservation Advisory Centre”. IMPORTANT ISSUE IN IRISH POLITICS – REALLY?
Did you know that Hunting, especially Stag Hunting, is the most important event/sport/past time in rural Ireland? Have you seen the regular reports in newspapers and on TV about this regular and important event? — No????? You have not? You have never ever heard about it as an important event in Ireland? You didn’t realise that the whole country is at it? — Well, that is probably because it is NOT important, because only a very small fraction of people are involved in it and because it is a very cruel “sport” that the majority of decent people would declare as brutal and inappropriate. Stag hunting is a hunt for a main deer (stag) during which a pack of dogs is chasing the animal until it is too tired and too stressed to run any further. In whole Ireland there is ONE single hunt club, in Co. Meath. The Minister for the Environment John Gormley brought legislation to the parliament to ban hunting and you would not believe the tumultuous scenes that the discussion created. This video clip gives an impression of what went on in the Irish National Parliament while the spare time activity of one single hunt club were discussed. www.rte.ie/news/2010/0629/hunting_av.html?2779600,null,230 Luckily the law was passed and stag hunting will be illegal. However, the issues was so hotly debated that you wonder if that is how involved and engaged the members of the Dail always get. Unfortunately, though, the debates about bailing out banks and developers or about the closure of hospitals never gets the same passionate response. So it seems stag hunting is the most important issue that affects the nation!? This is not just odd, it is shocking!
