For some it can’t come soon enough,others are sad it is over: On Sunday evening at 20:00 the final game of the EURO 2024, European football championship will take place. I am not the biggest football fan, but Worldcups and European championships are a little different, so in the past I have watched a good few matches. This year – to my own surprise – just one. :-o
|
|
It is a pity for me that Germany is not in the final, but they had their chance and just didn’t play well enough. Now we need to take sides in a England vs Spain match. And funnily the reason I heard most often for people supporting Spain over England is “Can you imagine how they will go on about winning, considering that they are STILL celebrating their only world cup win in 1966?” ;-) I blame the low quality newspapers in the UK for this.

It is a pity that there were no public viewings in Ireland for any of the EURO 2024 matches, they looked like a lot of fun in other European countries!

But luckily we have some other great events happening this weekend. Funtropolis in Merrion Square is one of them. The Red Bull Street Dance competition is another. The Ballyfermot / Cherry Orchard Arts Festival also takes place. And the Bohemia Flea Market and Bastille Day celebrations on Sunday are two other great events.

+++ Funtropolis by Dublin City Council
Funtropolis is free Family Fun in Merrion Square on 13+14 July and on 17+18 August, the whole event will take place in Mountjoy Square. There will be street theatre, music and dance, comedy & food stalls for the whole family. In a way it is a replacement of what was initially the Street Performance World Championships and later the City Spectacular. Some of the performers and events are Mark the Science Guy, Joe the Magician, Scientific Sue’s Magical Science and Engineering Show Generation POUND (kid-friendly choreography and group activities), Cikadas Circus, comedy with “Those Two Idiots” street theatre by AU-ADHD artist Moss Russell, samba at the Ta Tum Tum music show. There will also the Morbid & Sons show, music at Pstryk, an interactive musical experience designed especially for children aged 3-10 years, Changemakers Storytelling, a family friendly interactive storytelling session with singing, dancing and mindfulness.
And on the music stage Code of Behaviour will create a pop, jazz and overall party atmosphere. DJ Will Softly & The Bubble Gang, along with The African Gospel Choir, Go Dance for Change and others will perform. There will be a DCC Sports and Wellbeing Zone and the mobile library will be on site. The Dublin City Council outdoor mobile child sensory unit will be available for use for anyone who identifies as neurodiverse.

The Story Yurt, with a Teddy Bears Picnic Singalong and instrument time, family music sessions, Óga Yoga, the Cosmic Movers Space Themed Dance workshop with Jess Rowell, the Three Little Pigs Puppet Show
The Bubble Guys will create huge bubbles, GOMBA & Rhythm AFRICANA will use traditional African styles of music and rhythm, a Dublin Art Class for children aged 8–12 and a Mobile Music School will run music workshops exploring the world of music-making.

+++ SUMMER IN DUBLIN
Dublintown, the business organisation that represents shops and businesses in Dublin City, has announced a summer event programme called “Summer in Dublin”. It will run from 07 July to 25 August with street performances, dance and music every Sunday from 16:00-20:00.
A list of performers is mentioned and a list of locations, but unfortunately Dublin Town seems to want to surprise people in Dublin with pop-up performances, instead giving us a chance to plan attending the “Summer in Dublin” events.
Locations are from South Ann Street to Drury Street on the southside and Liffey Street, Capel Street, North Earl Street and Wolfe Tone Park on the northside.
Musical attractions are a New Orleans Jazz band New Brass Kings, three-piece trad band Sin Deri Si and Latin group Havana Club Trio.
There will also be dance and art and HOPEFULLY Dublintown will tell us over the next few weeks where the events will take place.

Ikea in Ballymun runs a variety of crafting, music and cooking workshops it is always worh checking out. The workshops are free and usually go for 45 minutes.
