Dublin Event Guide 707: BIG steps towards a new/old Ireland! – Food markets are all back, OPW News, Harold’s Cross Community Festival, Bealtaine Festival

Dublin Event Guide (for free events)

BIG steps towards a new/old Ireland!

Food markets are all back, Harold’s Cross Community Festival, Bealtaine Festival

Hi all!

Museums are open, events are re-starting, the OPW has made a big announcement (see at the bottom of this newsletter) about Irish heritage sites and the traffic is back on our streets. And when on Monday all retail re-opens (watch out Penney’s, here we come!) then we are nearly back to normality.

Ok, Pubs, Restaurants, Gigs, Parties, Festivals and Travel are still missing, but who remembers them anyway. :-O But seriously, it looks as if all is just a mattter of time and luckily not THAT much more time!

Thanks to the help from some of you (a lot less than I had hoped for, to be honest, but at least there were SOME ;-) ), last week’s Facebook Reach of this newsletter went back to an acceptable number again. So the end of the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” on Facebook has stopped for now, but I strongly STRONGLY suggest that you sign up for the weekly newsletter at www.dublineventguide.com if you want to ensure that you get regular updates about the great free events in Dublin.

With life opening up again, some people will feel very insecure and we will have to help them to re-learn “normality” again. Especially elderly people might have big concerns. I see it in a relative of mine who is double vaccinated and not the biggest socialiser anyway, but she is super worried of even just going into her own garden. The spreading of fear by media and authorities was so effective that she is worried to leave her house.

We also need to send a message to our authorities, that makes it clear that ANY ongoing restrictions have to b e evidence-based and without evidence we will not accept them/live by them. The current highly contentious issue are antigen self-tests, which are an absolutely important means to open society again in many countries. They also will be the ticket (literally!) to open large scale events again. However, in Ireland, key figures in NPHET argue against clear evidence and international experts in a bizarrely ignorant and arrogant way. For some reason they don’t get it (or don’t want to get it?). The NPHET position is so laughably incorrect that an eminent virologist from Harvard Medical School was wondering what the ulterior motives of the NPHET representatives are.

Coming to the most needed, but not so popular section of this newsletter, the “begging section” ? I want to say a HUGE Thank You to the donors! If I could, I would love to shake our hand to thank you for your essential help! The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) has some amazing supporters!
These supporters are keeping the Dublin Event Guide alive! If you are not yet part of this prestigious group, it would be really great to welcome you to it as well.

The Dublin Event Guide is a free service that I run since 2007. I don’t make any money from it, but I need your help to pay the bills (approx 200 Euro per months). Some people have suggested that I should I put the Dublin Event Guide behind a “pay wall” and charge a few Euro per month for access. But I have to say that this is definitely not my preferred option, so I will keep it free as long as possible.

If you are with me on this and can help me to continue that way, I would appreciate your donation. If you don’t have the means to help with a donation, then the Dublin Event Guide is my gift to you!

Any amount will help, but if you are looking for a recommendation, then I suggest a donation of 12 Euro per year. That’s just one Euro per month and you get FOUR Dublin Event Guides for that. Where else can you get so much value for so little money?

Use the Dublin Event Guide Donation Page here. It is really easy to use and uses Stripe’s trustworthy payment processing. In case it doesn’t work for you, the “old” links are still below for another little while. And maybe you can even sign up for a yearly subscription!? Yearly subscriptions will give some important financial stability and reliability to the Dublin Event Guide and would be great to have! (Look for the RED subscription buttons at the bottom of the Donation Page.)

If the new page above doesn’t work, please donate here via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide or for Revolut users among you just use @joergbrb

And you can even buy one or two or even three virtual coffees (or Hot Chocolates!) for the Dublin Event Guide on the “Buy Me a Coffee” page here www.buymeacoffee.com/DublinEventG

There is also another way to help and it is even free: If you come to www.DublinEventGuide.com and check out some of the ads and click on the ones that you find interesting, that also helps with a few cent! ?

Thank you!!

+++ EPIC Explorers: Market the Museum
Sat 22 May – 11:00-12:00 – Online – Adm: Free
To celebrate ‘International Museum Day’, EPIC is putting the future of museum marketing in your children’s hands with this interactive poster making workshop. First, we’ll learn what museum marketing is and why it’s important, taking part in a few fun activities to test out past campaigns from EPIC and museums around the world. We’ll discover all about advertising, design, brand and character, giving your child all the tools they need to succeed, before handing over the reins to them. After the workshop, using everything they’ve learned, they’ll reimagine the stories of our museum for future audiences by designing their very own marketing posters. Once they’ve perfected their designs, our marketing team will use them to promote EPIC on social media, sharing their campaigns for everyone to admire! Suitable for children ages 6 – 12 years old, all your child need is their imagination and whatever materials they have available to take part. epicchq.com/event/epic-explorers-market-the-museum/ (Booking required.)

And there is more…

+++ Free admission to ALL Irish Heritage Sites managed by OPW
The OPW (Office of Public Works) manages most Irish Heritage sites, including Dublin Castle, Kilmainham Gaol, Rathfarnham Castle, Kilkenny Castle, Brú Na Bóinne/Newgrange Visitor Centre and many others. To hel with the recovery and getting back to normality, the Minister of State with responsibility for the OPE, Patrick O’ Donovan has announced on Friday that admission to all sites will be free until the end of the year.
In normal times this would be super news and I would celebrate it. But at the moment we still are in different times. Some sites are closed (e.g. Kilmainham Gaol), other sites have limited visitor numbers and guided tours are also still cancelled. So the celebration is a little dampened, BUT, there is a real possibility that all sites will open before the end of year AND that guided tours will re-start again and once that happens, then this free access until the end of the year is great news. Find all details on heritageireland.ie/

+++ Dublin Dance Festival & International Literature Festival
The Dublin Dance Festival (with this year’s focus on Dance Films) will take place from  18-30 May. It seems that there are a couple of free events as well, but it is so difficult to find out which events are free and which aren’t that I had to give up. You need to check yourself: www.dublindancefestival.ie
The International Literature Festival Dublin also takes place at the end of May (20-30 May). They run some free and some non-free events and the full list (unfortunately also without a clear identification of free evens) is here ilfdublin.com

+++ LEARN A NEW SKILL WITH ONLINE COURSES
Is there ever a wrong time for learning a new skill or enhancing what you are already interested in? Maybe it is a language or an instrument or some technical skills? Or NLP or some Business related “soft skills”? Check out Udemy via the link below, they have thousands of courses and there is good chance that what you are looking for is available. Nearly all the courses are REALLY affordable!
The lowest cost for courses this month will be around 12.99. Check out the website at shor.by/GqCk And if you buy through that link, you also help the Dublin Event Guide! :-)

+++ READ MORE BOOKS
For physical books and e-books I recommend Book Depository because they are usually cheaper than others and they always include free delivery in their price AND by buying books from Book Depository you will definitely help the Dublin Event Guide and it doesn’t cost you a cent. Buy your books here shor.by/BookDepository  .

And this is it for another week! Have a good weekend and new week.

Take care,

–Joerg (dublineventguide@gmail.com)
