Level 3 or not, Dublin is BUSY!! – Busker Fleadh, Frisbee Games, Uilleann Pipes, Hip Hop, Mental Health Week, Dublin Theatre Festival, Open House Dublin

Every now and then, Dublin City issues a “Your Dublin Your Voice” survey to a panel of a few thousand people and in the past I wrote about ways to participate in the Dublin Event Guide. A few weeks ago a new survey was sent out and I just received the headline results during the week.

One question jumped out:
Post-COVID, 45% of respondents anticipate using public transport less, 38% anticipate socialising in the city less, 36% intend dining and non-grocery shopping in the city less.

This is a HUGE change and will impact us all, I expect! If such a big proportion of people plan to socialise less in Dublin and also plan to eat out less and shop, then the result will have to be that there will be significantly less shops, restaurants and pubs. But it also will probably result in less events in Dublin!

Is that what we really want? Sure, the survey was taken in the middle of Covid restrictions and Covid concerns, so a while after Covid (And YES, there will be life after Covid!!!) this could change again, but it does make you wonder if the currently required physical distancing that is still given the horrible name of “social distancing”  will lead to social isolation.

Here at the Dublin Event Guide, I will do whatever possible to reduce that risk! If people know what great events there will take place again after Covid, then they hopefully will be tempted. And in the meantime we will “struggle on” with all sorts of online events and some real life evens.

And whatever I find out about events, I will report back to you in the form of the best free event listing for Dublin that you can find! ;-) Week after week! If I have to do the work AND pay the bills, I will stop. Fair??? I think so!

I found a few more things to keep you going or that you might find interesting:

1) BUSKER FLEADH
Last year the Busker FLeadh took place at Smithfield Plaza, this year it is an online event. On Saturday and Sunday there will be 20 performances on each day on the Virtual Stage and in addition a total of 6 workshops and talks will happen. Check out buskerfleadh.ie/ for all details!

2) OPEN HOUSE DUBLIN
Open House is an amazing event in normal years. I call it the “Culture Night for people with an interest in the buildings around us”. Organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation it normally gives us a chance to discover normally inaccessible buildings on a guided tour and always gives great insights in the reasons behind building the building in the way we see it today.

One year I took part in a tour of Busaras and started really appreciating this not so much liked building. The same happened when Liberty Hall was properly explained to me. Last year I was lucky enough to get on the tour for the old Airport Terminal.

Fascinating experiences year after year! But as you can imagine, Open House 2020 will be different than in previous years.
Luckily it is still taking place, but most “tours” will be online. It will take place on 10+11 October with some events already this coming Thursday and Friday. I would suggest that you check out the website during the week at openhousedublin.com to see what buildings you would like to see. Some events need prebooking! There is also a “Open House Junior” if you have kids that need entertaining. And there are even a few real life events that you should find out about before next weekend.

3) HALLOWEEN FOR KIDS in 2020
Last week I made some suggestions for how to tell your children that Santa will definitely come, but it will be a little different this year.
This week I want to tell you about a few ideas I had for a safe Halloween in Covid times and the inspiration to it came – indirectly – from the same 6 year old child that got me thinking how to explain Covid changes to a child last week. ;-)

Trick or Treat-ing is in Covid times not necessarily a harmless undertaking, but what is Halloween without the fun of going around the houses to get sweets? So how can you reduce the risk and still give your child a nice Halloween experience?

The super safe solution is not to leave the house and instead put family members in different rooms in the house and get your children to go from door to door and get some sweets. (If there are not enough family members…or rooms, you might have to do a number of “tours” around the house.) It is not the same as going from house to house, I agree, but it is the safest solution.

But there is another option: You also could bring pre-packed small bags of sweets with your child’s name on it to a few trusted neighbours. Then you can go from house to house, keep the appropriate physical distance at the houses, and when your child announces its name, you know that the sweets bag you will get only contains the things that you put in there. If you want to be extra careful, you could even double-bag the sweets so that when you get the bag you just remove the outer bag and now nobody but you will have touched the inner bag.

Some might find this is being too careful and others – who are a bit more careful – will hopefully consider it as an option that will allow Trick or Treat-ing even in 2020. :-)

October is reuse month and the goal is to to raise awareness about the benefits of reusing everyday items and materials that would otherwise go to waste. There will be three events that give help and advise and you can put them already in your diary:
