Hi all!

This week and next week I will be so busy that writing the Event Guide will be a little more of a challenge than normally, but I will still do my best to provide you with all the information about the big amount of free events in Dublin. From Friday until Tuesday I will do the next step of my NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) course and all going well, my Masters qualification will be completed at the end of next Tuesday. I signed up for that course purely because I was hugely interested in it. But since starting that path of education, it really widened my horizon and who knows what will come from it. ;-)

As far as the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)” is concerned, I can tell you that this new educational direction has had and is still having a huge impact. So, indirectly you ALL are part of it! :-) My interest in Personal Development started many years ago with a book by Joseph Murphy (“Power of the Subconscious Mind”: astore.amazon.co.uk/dubeveguiforf-21 ) which everybody should read. MUCH later, I searched for free events for this Event Guide and came across the free 3-day seminar Breakthrough to Success which will take place in Dublin again from 19-21 March 2010 (www.breakthroughtosuccess.eu/?af=CLA1035324) and that is when things really took off. Important for all of you if you are a regular and interested reader of this newsletter is that I am currently working on ways to improve the Event Guide and I would very much appreciate your input! I know that the top of the wishlist is a user friendlier layout. But as long as I am writing the Event Guide as a hobby with no commercial focus, beautifying the layout takes time that I currently don’t have. From Friday until Tuesday, I will be at a training course, so I won’t be able to go to any events. But if I were around, I would definitely go to the Red Line Roots Music Festival and to some events of the DEAF 2009 Festival. I hope you will have a nice bank holiday weekend. As usual the bank holiday itself is not a hugely busy day, but with the Dublin City Marathon a big event is taking place even if that is not a mass appeal event. ;-)

THE SECRET CASTLE OF MAGIC – TICKET COMPETITION
Castle Dracula & Sillybilly.ie present “The Secret Castle of Magic”. The ‘Secret Castle of Magic’ – a show for older kids and adults – opened its doors in November 2008 and is Ireland’s only Magic venue. There is only one public night per month so you have to book in advance. The Secret Castle features Eamonn Murphy (Winner of ‘Irish Magician of the Year 2009), Nevin Cody (Secretary of the Society of Irish Magicians) and Ronan MacGabhann (Winner of the Gold Star for good spelling – Age 7 ;-) ). Tickets are EUR 12 (EUR 10) and children have to be at least 12 to be allowed in.
The next performance will take place on 30 Oct close to Halloween ;-) and after the success of last months competition, Sillybilly.ie have made another pair of tickets available for this show. MERCHANT OF VENICE – TICKET COMPETITION
The Dublin Shakespeare Society is performing “The Merchant of Venice” in the Teachers Club Theater, 36 Parnell Square West, Dublin 1 from 03-07 Nov (19:30). The play is directed by Savio Sequeira. It was written between 1596-1598 but the production is set in Mussolini’s Italy between 1933 and 1938; it was during this period that Mussolini passed a range of anti-Semitic laws causing great pain, suffering and hardship to the Jewish Community living in Italy at that time.

U2 LIVE CONCERT ON YOU TUBE
The Irish Times reported last week that U2 will stream their concert in California live on YouTube. The concert at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in California will start at 20:30 Californian Time on Sun 25 Oct. Since the Summer Time in Ireland ends on Sunday morning, I am – like many other people slightly confused. The YouTube website claims that the concert will start at 04:30 Irish Time (that is Monday morning!) but my calculations suggest that it will start at 03:30! You better check for yourself, I could be totally wrong! Either way you will have to get up VERY early. MORE PUB TROUBLE
A new venue was added to my long list of closed pubs or pubs/nightclubs in trouble. During the week I was at the Irish Life Centre in Abbey Street and found out that Floridita, the once very popular Salsa Club, bar and restaurant, seems to be closed for some time already. I was in Floridita a few times and always liked the music, but found the admission charge of EUR 10 quite excessive. Searching a little further, I found out that it already closed in January. :-o As I said, I was there only a FEW times! :-) www.floridita.co.uk/dublin/

FOCUS IRELAND – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
A few weeks ago, I mentioned that Focus Ireland is looking for volunteers. Focus Ireland is a charity that helps homeless people and people in danger of becoming homeless. They provide services, supported housing and advice. On Fri 20 Nov their “Key to a Home” collection day is coming up and on that day volunteers are needed to sell key rings to get money for the organisation. “A collaboration of the work of many photographers including serving and former soldiers, the main purposes of this exhibition is to help raise consciousness and awareness in the public of the opposition to wars, the plight of the people in war torn countries, the real reasons behind wars, the effects of war and also to show the situations soldiers find themselves in. CITY ARTSQUAD – BAR COUNCIL OF IRELAND

SOUNDSCAPES
The Contemporary Music Centre (19 Fishamble Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 8) presents Soundscapes, a ten-day outdoor celebration in sound of the work of veteran Irish composer Roger Doyle, often described as ‘the Godfather of Irish electronic music’. The show runs from 22-31 Oct (12:00-16:00), as part of the DEAF Festival 2009. In an imaginative use of its 200-year old listed building in Fishamble Street, Temple Bar, the Contemporary Music Centre will create a dramatic outdoor sound gallery to play Doyle’s strikingly contemporary electronic and piano music from speakers located on the front of the building and in its enclosed rear courtyard. Six different playlists spanning Doyle’s career across the last three decades will be broadcast each afternoon. www.cmc.ie

DEAF 2009
DEAF 2009 (Dublin Electronic Arts Festival) returns this year to various venues around Dublin city from 22-31 October 2009. Continuing with last year’s theme of re-interpreting the medium of video art and its context, this year’s ‘If these walls could talk’ exhibition at The Joinery as part of DEAF 2009 looks for the literal and conceptual presence of the walls and structures that define the urban environment and how space is re-used, recycled and re-invented. WRITING ABOUT THE NEW GERMANY – GOETHE INSTITUT
“Writing about the New Germany” is the title of a reading and discussion with authors
Jenny Erpenbeck, Ulrich Peltzer and Julia Schoch. The event will take place on Fri 23 Oct from 17:00-18:30 in the Goethe-Institut, 37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2 (in English). Admission free. The three authors will read from their works and participate in a panel discussion on continuity and changes of Germany’s cultural identity 20 years after the wall. The discussion will be chaired by Karen Leeder, University of Oxford. The event is part of the conference “Re-Imagining the Nation? Transformations of German Cultural Identiy since 1989” from 22 to 24 October 2009, which takes place at University College Dublin and the Goethe-Institut Irland.

CAPOEIRA FESTIVAL
Last weekend Mundo Capoeira had their annual Capoeira Festival, but during the week I was told that there is another Capoeira group Grupo Candeias Dublin) and that they have their festival this weekend. So here is the information for another Capoeira Festival:
This weekend the “IV Gingarte Capoeira Festival” will take place. From 23-25 Oct workshops, performances, demonstrations, a grading ceremony and a Brazilian Party will take place The main venue for the weekend will be Gloucester Street Sports Centre, Gloucester Street, Dublin 2 (behind the Ulster Bank building).

# Sat 24 Oct:
+ 10:00 Street Roda, Grafton St (near St Stephen’s Green) Weather permitting!
+ 12:00-18:00 Workshops and Roda, Gloucester Street Sports Centre. This will include workshops by the Brazilian Masters from Grupo Candeias and teachers from all over Europe from Grupo Candeias, Origens do Brazil and Capoeira Gerais.
+ 20:00 Brazilian Party at Kobra Bar, Lower Leeson Street (Admission EUR 10). DJ, Capoeira and Maculele Demonstrations
# Sun 25 Oct: 12:00-17:00 Grading Ceremony, Maculele Performance by students from Grupo Candeias Dublin, Danca Guerrera Performance by teachers from Grupo Candeias Ireland and a Closing Roda.

RED LINE ROOTS MUSIC FESTIVAL
The Red Line Roots Festival will run from 22-25 Oct. It is a music festival that is spread across the three venues Sin E, the Dice Bar and The Cobblestone, which are all quite near to each other in the vicinity of Smithfield Plaza.. The music is a very interesting mixture of Blues, Country, Rock, Bluegrass with some Balkan Beats, Punk and Folk added to it. The gigs in The Cobblestone are not free, but all gigs in Sin E and the Dice Bar are completely free.
It is a pity that I will probably not be able to make it to any of the gigs, because I definitely would have liked to “try” the Red Line Roots Festival. I hope you will be able to give it a go. It is a great idea and a great initiative by the pubs involved. It would be great if more pubs came up with similarly good ideas!

HALLOWFEST 2009
Once Halloween was a day (31 October), but lately it is extended more and more and this year there is a whole Halloween week starting on Sunday 25 Oct. South Dublin County every year has one of the best Halloween Celebrations and it seems that this years Hallowfest 2009 is better than last years again.
Not all events are free, so you have to search a bit, but there are some walks and Library events that are free. Have a good look at www.hallowfest.ie

FRANCIS BACON & DAVID CRONENBERG – LECTURE + FILM
A Lecture & Film Screening about Francis Bacon & David Cronenberg “The Inner Beauty and other aspects” is taking place on Sun 25 Oct at 13:30 in the Hugh Lane Gallery on Parnell Square. BANK HOLIDAY
This Monday is a bank holiday. Expect shops to be open like on Sundays. In Dublin City the Pay & Display Parking will not be enforced so you can park there without paying, however Loading Bays and Bus Lanes are “active”, so stay away from them. :-) Regular events MIGHT not take place on a bank holiday, so check them out first.

DUBLIN CITY MARATHON
Traditionally the Bank Holiday Monday is the day of the yearly Dublin City Marathon. The impressive number of more than 12,000 runners and walkers will take part and the event starts at 09:00. The Start will be near Fitzwilliam Square and the Finish is on Merrion Square. The last person has to be back by 17:00, so for 8 hours the course will be open. In the City Centre the traffic will be severely affected, so plan your journeys wisely. EDVARD MUNCH – NATIONAL GALLERY
I mentioned a few weeks ago that the Edvard Munch exhibition in the National Gallery is free every Monday. This might not be much help to many of you, but this week you can make use of it. Frangos Restaurant on Level 3 in Dundrum Town Centre are inviting to free cooking demonstrations. DIGGING FOR DRACULA – BOOK LAUNCH
A book launch and special multi-media literary evening near Halloween at which the origins, truths and myths surrounding the world’s most infamous vampire will be discussed will take place on Thurs 29 Oct at 19:00. The National College or Ireland is bringing the “Legends in your Lunchtime” series back by popular demand. CHOCOLATE FESTIVAL – TEMPLE BAR
From 30 Oct-01 Nov, the second annual Chocolate Festival will take place in Temple Bar. The event has a huge potential, but the Chocolate Fair on Sunday was a little disappointing last year. Let’s hope it will be better this year.
One aspect, however, that was already very impressive-sounding last year, was the free (and non-free) ticketed events. Again, this year there are a number of free but ticketed events and more non-free events. RDS DARWIN LECTURE
The RDS has an very interesting free public lecture coming up:
The RDS Darwin200 Public Lecture: “Fragile Web, What Next for Nature?” will take place on Tues 24 November in the RDS Concert Hall at 19:00. In celebration of Darwin200 and to mark the 150th anniversary of the publication of ‘The Origin of Species’ by Charles Darwin, the RDS has invited Professor Jonathan Silvertown who will be speaking on the matter of biodiversity. This lecture marks the fourth in the series of RDS Irish Times ‘Ireland in 2030’ lectures which aims to look at the serious long-term challenges that face us today. SWINE FLU JUST A PHARMA-FRAUD?
On Monday I came across a very interesting article about the mass immunisation project in Germany against the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus and after a long search I found a translation into English. The most interesting thing in my opinion is that the head of the “Drug Commission of the German Medical Association”, Prof. Dr. med. Wolf-Dieter Ludwig, seems to think that the alleged swine flu threat is not much more than a panic that has been created artificially and intentionally by the pharmaceutical industry to make a huge amount of money. There are many more concerns raised in this article about the safety of the vaccines and to make sure that you can consider all aspects, I suggest that you read it and then make up your own mind. On balance I have decided that I will not get any vaccination against a flu virus and I suggest you gather all available information so that you can make the decision that makes sense for you. www.thelocal.de/national/20091018-22649.html
