This is the last edition of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and ironically with this last edition I had soooo many technical problems that the sending was delayed by more than 2 hours. :-O
Thanks for being with me on this path for the last few years! Thanks for your support! You hopefully now know lots more venues that run free events and you should go regularly. Now that things are winding down and the Dublin Event Guide is going into retirement, I won’t ask you for any further support, but I want to thank each and everyone who helped over the last 600 weeks from the bottom of my heart. Without your help, the Dublin Event Guide could not have continued that long, So thank you very very much.
To cover the cost of the Dublin Event Guide EUR 240 per month was needed and I just asked for EUR 12 from generous donors. If EVERYONE who subscribed had donated just EUR 1 OR if every Facebook Follower had donated just EUR 1, the Dublin Event Guide would not retire! But regrettably only less than 1% of all readers were so generous that they helped and for that reason it was a permanent struggle to cover the bills!
Going forward, I will fund the irregular e-mails to you myself, but it would be great if you could click on ads and buy through the ads in this and the future post-retirement Event Guides. I won’t say NO to donations here, but I won’t keep begging like in the past! ;-)

The Casablanca Club – New Jazz Venue in Dublin – Dinner for 2 Competition – Winner

Cinderella Panto – Ticket Competition

Tempus Productions is bringing the Cinderella Panto to the Liberty Hall Theatre. There will be 12 performances from 19 December until 06 January and the list of all performances is below. Tickets will be available on www.libertypanto.com and they are prices at EUR 19.50.

“It’s that time of year. Dublin City is rammed, there are fewer choccies left in your advent calendar, and you’ve already lost your granny twice in Arnotts. Pantomime factory Tempus Productions has splashed out. Their production pulls out all the stops, boasting a star-studded cast this year including John Lovett (Red Rock, The Tudors & Panto Dame extraordinaire) and Eric Lalor (Comedian & Fair City Bad Guy)

See you!! The last 11.5 years were great!
Yes, that’s it now! After 11.5 years together and 600 editions, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is – at least in the current form – reaching you the last time. If you want to stay in touch, come to the Facebook Page at www.fb.comDublinEventGuide where I plan to continue letting you know about events. The long e-mail in its current form will be gone, but every now and then I will still send a mail to all 24,000 subscribers when I come across some good events or worthwhile news. So I won’t be gone completely.
But importantly, after today, there won’t be a weekly long list of free events sent to you anymore and that also means that I can’t post the daily event reminders on Facebook (because I won’t anymore about ALL the events that are happening.). And in case you still used the webapp or maybe even the old iPhone app,, unfortunately that won’t be updated anymore either.

You might know that I am a bit of a Christmas Market purist and am extremely disappointed with what Dublin manages to put together. With that in mind, I would say that most (if not all) of the “Christmas Markets” on that list are actually “Markets at Christmas”, but not real Christmas Markets. But decide for yourself!
And if you wonder which markets I would recommend: I have heard good things about Winterval in Waterford but was never there myself. So the only market that I would definitely recommend is the one in Belfast! :-O

Lustre & InFlux is an exhibition of innovative work of Ireland’s newest goldsmithing and ceramic graduates of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland’s Centres of Excellence in Jewellery and Goldsmithing and in Ceramics in Kilkenny.
Lustre showcases beautiful pieces designed and made by the most recent graduates of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland’s Centre of Excellence in Jewellery & Goldsmithing, work in gold, silver, platinum and gemstones. A highlight of the exhibition is an exquisite collection of ten Fabergé-style eggs.
InFlux shows the results of two years of training in all aspects of ceramics skills and design at DCCoI’s Centre of Excellence in Ceramics which is based in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. ‘Flux’ in ceramics describes a material that will cause silica, which has a natural melting point of 1700°C, to melt at a lower temperature thus forming ceramic glazes. In general terms, the word ‘flux’ also means continuous change and movement and can be applied to the development of ideas and designs and best describes the diversity of this work.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

Áras an Uachtaráin – Tour

Áras an Uachtaráin is the residence of the President of Ireland in the middle of Phoenix Park. It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th ‘occasional residence’ for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.
Every Saturday a number of public tours take place and admission is free. Tickets will be issued at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day, on a first come, first served basis. Group and/or advance booking is not possible.
The tours will be at 10:15, 11:30, 12:45, 14:00 and 15:15 and take approx. 1 hour.

There will be a number of stalls with art and craft and seasonal food. A Vintage Funfair with Ferris Wheel will run in parallel with the Christmas Market.

Live Animal Crib @ Mansion House

The Live Animal Crib at Mansion House is a yearly Christmas feature. It will be open until Christmas Eve and is brought to you in association with the Irish Farmers Association.
And just in case you are worried: The animals in the crib are brought there in the morning and brought back home in the evening, so they are looked after well.
Admission is free, but donations for the charity “Mansion House Fuel Fund” are appreciated.

Inti macy – Science Gallery Exhibition

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)
The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?
Some of the most interesting exhibits are:
+ Companion Cat and Robot Flatmate
+ Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers
+ Measure your Personal Space
+ A virtual reality system that allows visitors to experience the world through the eyes and body of another person.
The website below lists all exhibits and provides some explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.
All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.
I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The Dublin Flea Christmas Market is back and this year it will run over two weekends and again from Thursday until Sunday. It will happen again at the Point Village, in the same building where the cinema is. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thurs + Fri 12:30-18:30. The two market weekends are 06-09 December and 13-16 December.
At each weekend there will be approx. 140 stalls at the market, but the second weekend will have DIFFERENT stalls than the first, so don’t just go on once weekend and think you are done. You have to come the second weekend as well. ;-)
This is the biggest Christmas Market in Dublin this year. It is an indoor market in a modern building, so not really comparable to the Christmas Markets I keep raving about (and which we don’t have in Ireland), but at least it is a “big market at Christmas”.
Parking is a problem in the area. There is a multistorey car park, but it is pricey and limited in space. So if possible come by LUAS.

Moving Crib in St. Martin Apostolate

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.
I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)
Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.

The National Gallery is running a series of free themed family drop-in workshops from 11:30-13:30 every Sunday.
The next one is entitled “Picture in a Maze” and will be with artist Elizabeth Archbold. The workshop will be inspired by the exhibition Canaletto and the Art of Venice.
Children and their parents/guardians/carers are encouraged to work together on creative projects. Drop-in and stay for as long (or as little!) as you wish. Suitable for children of all ages.

Inti macy – Science Gallery Exhibition

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)
The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?
Some of the most interesting exhibits are:
+ Companion Cat and Robot Flatmate
+ Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers
+ Measure your Personal Space
+ A virtual reality system that allows visitors to experience the world through the eyes and body of another person.
The website below lists all exhibits and provides some explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.
All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.
I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Dublin Flea Christmas Market

The Dublin Flea Christmas Market is back and this year it will run over two weekends and again from Thursday until Sunday. It will happen again at the Point Village, in the same building where the cinema is. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thurs + Fri 12:30-18:30. The two market weekends are 06-09 December and 13-16 December.
At each weekend there will be approx. 140 stalls at the market, but the second weekend will have DIFFERENT stalls than the first, so don’t just go on once weekend and think you are done. You have to come the second weekend as well. ;-)
This is the biggest Christmas Market in Dublin this year. It is an indoor market in a modern building, so not really comparable to the Christmas Markets I keep raving about (and which we don’t have in Ireland), but at least it is a “big market at Christmas”.
Parking is a problem in the area. There is a multistorey car park, but it is pricey and limited in space. So if possible come by LUAS.

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.
I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)
Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.
I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)
Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.

The Story of the Capital – Exhibition in Dublin City Hall

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition about Dublin’s History and you should definitely check it out at some stage.

City of Dublin Winter Solstice Celebration Festival

The City of Dublin Winter Solstice Celebration Festival 2018 is taking place on Friday and consists of an indoors part on the DIT Grangegorman Campus, followed by a parade to Smithfield Plaza.
Smashing Times and Slí an Chroí, in partnership with Dublin Institute of Technology are inviting to this 9th City of Dublin Winter Solstice Celebration Festival.
The indoor festival is from 16:00-17:30 and the outdoor festival and parade from 17:30-19:00.
At the Indoor Festival in Rathdown House on the DIT Grangegorman Campus there will be a big Céilí (Irish dancing with the Brian Boru Céilí band); a Solstice Storytelling performance with poetry, song and stories; face painting; a magic card show and craft making to work on masks, banners and wreaths for the parade. Creative stalls like the holly brooch and ivy wreath stand, the withy stand, the hat and rattle making stand and the face-painting corner for a Winter Solstice design will also be available.
Outdoor Festival and Parade: 5.30pm, An Croí, DIT Grangegorman Campus to Smithfield Square
At 17:30 the parade assembles at An Chroi, the main entrance to DIT Grangegorman Campus to march to Smithfield Plaza. It will be a colourful, choreographed movement performance to announce the arrival of the Sun Goddess, the Snow Queen and Ice princesses followed by the lighting of the fire bowl and the beginning of the parade.
The route is: DIT Grangegorman – Grangegorman Road Lower – North Brunswick St – Red Cow Lane – Smithfield Plaza. Everybody is invited to be part od the parade. Dress in bright, festive colours of red and yellow, bring a lantern, a rattle, a drum, a tambourine, anything that shines.
A Winter Solstice Fire Ceremony on Smithfield Plaza will conclude the event with a high point.
Admission to all events is free.
