The Jonathan Swift Festival is a celebration of Jonathan Swift’s life and works with a range of events in various locations in Dublin. The festival runs from 29 Nov – 02 Dec and most events are free. The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Christmas on the Square 2018 is not what it once was. A few years ago LOTS of Georgian Houses around Merrion Square were open before Christmas with markets and other events.

This year only the Irish Architectural Archive at 45 Merrion Square will sell Irish design, craft and food on the Open Day. So “Christmas on the Square” is a little euphemistic maybe? It should be “Christmas in No 45”. :-)

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-16:00. (Come early, though! It seems that traders already start packing up around 15:30.) You can reach the market from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.

Áras an Uachtaráin is the residence of the President of Ireland in the middle of Phoenix Park. It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th ‘occasional residence’ for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.

Every Saturday a number of public tours take place and admission is free. Tickets will be issued at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day, on a first come, first served basis. Group and/or advance booking is not possible.

The tours will be at 10:15, 11:30, 12:45, 14:00 and 15:15 and take approx. 1 hour.

The Drumcondra Village Market is now the “Art, Bites, Crafts Drumcondra Market”. And as you guessed it, it is an arts and crafts fair in the centre of Drumcondra. :-) There will also be some food and music.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.

The Dun Laoghaire Christmas Market will open on 24 November and run until 23 December every Friday from 12:30-19:00 and on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00-19:00. The market area is not huge, it goes along the “Metals”, which is from the Dun Laoghaire’s MarineRoad near the City Hall (40 Foot Pub) towards the LexiCon library along the Queen’s Road, along the harbour.

There will be a number of stalls with art and craft and seasonal food. A Vintage Funfair with Ferris Wheel will run in parallel with the Christmas Market.

The “Greystones Art & Photography Exhibition” is inviting to a Christmas Market on 01+02+08+09+15+16+22+23 Dec from 11:00-17:00

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.

Six times this year the “People’s Art 2018″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails/fence of St. Stephen’s Green.

Visiting the People’s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of great art works from the artists themselves. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday.

People’s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen’s Green. Definitely recommended!

A Christmas Market will take place at Swords Castle on Saturday.

The Terenure Christmas Market (11:00-18:00) and Christmas Festival (16:00-17:00) will take place today. It will be on Terenure Village Car Park and NOT in Bushy Park.

There will be around 45 stalls with craft and food and 400 goodie bags will be prepared for kids and mulled wine and non-alcoholic refreshments for adults.

Santa will arrive at 16:00 and will switch on the Christmas lights.

In the last few years, the Print Museum organised a craft fair in December for Christmas. This year, however, they are moving back to the focus of their activity, which Print in Ireland.

From Friday until Sunday a Witner Print Fair will take place and will showcase artists working in the medium of print – including letterpress, etching and screen-printing. There will also be some artists working in associated crafts such as illustration and origami.

A number of print-related activities for all visitors will also be available, including activities for children.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)

The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:

+ Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers
+ Measure your Personal Space
+ A virtual reality system that allows visitors to experience the world through the eyes and body of another person.

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). The four games of UEFA EURO 2020 will take place at the Aviva Stadium in June 2020. The qualifiers for the tournament will begin in March 2019 and the draw for the European Qualifier groups will be Dublin this December.

The Street Legends events will involve football activities/skills tests on closed city streets. Iconic football players will be there and the events are free and open to participants of all ages. A Nature Sounds workshop, organised by the Children’s Nature Charity OWLS and supported by Dublin City will take in Bushy Park at 10am and admission is free.

A Zero Waste Christmas Festival will take place at the Green Door Market on Old Naas Road. There will be talks, workshops, info-stands, swap-shops and a market and all are dedicated to helping you reduce your waste this Christmas.

Not all is free, so you should check the details on the Facebook Page below. Access to the info-stands is free and so is the market and the swap-shops and drop-in workshops. But talks and other (?) workshops are EUR 10 for a day pass.

Gulliver’s Fair and Market is a Family Fun Day that is part of the Jonathan Switft Festival. The National Foodball Exhibition has been launched in Dublin and will be on show from 02-09 December and will then travel to seven other venues around Ireland until 2020 and will finally be in Dublin again in June 2020.

“The Exhibition is made up of six zones, with each zone designed to give you an overview of the various different aspects of football in Ireland, the impact this has around the country, some of your favourite and most memorable National and International moments and a look at some of the most iconic moments over the last 60 years of the EUROs. The zones will be made up of memorabilia displays and interactive stations with videos, quizzes and an opportunity to step up to the mic and record your own commentary.”

There is also an app for Android and iOS that will serve as an audio guide when you are at the exhibition.

I’d say this is a MUST GO exhibition for every fan of Irish Football!

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)

The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:

+ Companion Cat and Robot Flatmate
+ Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers
+ Measure your Personal Space
+ A virtual reality system that allows visitors to experience the world through the eyes and body of another person.

The website below lists all exhibits and provides some explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The next concert will feature Fionnuala Moynihan on piano, playing Tchaikovsky: The Seasons, Op. 37a

The Bernard Shaw Xmas Flea Market is happening on Sunday at the Bernard Shaw Pub. So in addition to the normal vintage clothes, shoes, jewellery, art, records, bric-a-brac, all sorts of Christmas presents will be on sale.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

During these workshops for 4 to 12 year olds, they will explore paintings, sculpture and architectural features through discussion and drawing.

Admission is free and no booking is required, but numbers are limited.

At this event called “Writing Of(f) Class”, which is part of the Jonathan Swift Festival, a panel with poets Stephen James Smith and Jessica Traynor, writers Frankie Gaffney and June Caldwell and singer Jess Kavanagh, discuss the transformative power of the arts as a tool for cultural visibility.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir sings every Sunday from September to June at their “Gig in God’s Gaff”, a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street.

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.

The National Foodball Exhibition has been launched in Dublin and will be on show from 02-09 December and will then travel to seven other venues around Ireland until 2020 and will finally be in Dublin again in June 2020.

“The Exhibition is made up of six zones, with each zone designed to give you an overview of the various different aspects of football in Ireland, the impact this has around the country, some of your favourite and most memorable National and International moments and a look at some of the most iconic moments over the last 60 years of the EUROs. The zones will be made up of memorabilia displays and interactive stations with videos, quizzes and an opportunity to step up to the mic and record your own commentary.”

There is also an app for Android and iOS that will serve as an audio guide when you are at the exhibition.

I’d say this is a MUST GO exhibition for every fan of Irish Football!

On 10 December 1948. the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris, France.

And to mark its 70th anniversary, the international Human Rights and Anti-Poverty Group ATD (All Together in Dignity), Alliance Française Dublin, the French Embassy and the Belgian Embassy will hold a roundtable with Georges de Kerchove, a Brussels-based human rights lawyer, Anastasia Crickley, Chairperson to the UN Committee for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and the founder member of the Migrants Rights Centre Ireland, and Pierre Klein, the National coordinator for ATD.

In light of the recent report from WWF/ZSL showing how the world has lost 60% of its large animals in the past 40 years, there can be no doubt that we find ourselves at the centre of an extinction crisis. We once had this brilliant monthly event called “First Wednesday” or then “Free Wednesday”, when on the first Wednesday of the month all state owned Irish heritage sites waived all admission charges for the day. Unfortunately this super popular opportunity to bring culture closer to people in Ireland has been cancelled for nearly all Dublin sites and for other popular sites in other parts of Ireland, which was a very bad decision.

But there is ONE single site left in Dublin that currently offers free admission on the first Wednesday of the month and that is Rathfarnham Castle! Tickets will be limited, so it is strongly recommended to go there early.

The Talk “Introduction to Canaletto and the Art of Venice” with Anne Hodge (Curator of Prints and Drawings and curator of the exhibition “Canaletto and the Art of Venice”) will talk about the new exhibition.

This loan exhibition presents a selection of the finest eighteenth-century Venetian paintings and works on paper from the UK’s Royal Collection. Paintings, drawings and prints by Canaletto will be shown alongside groups of paintings and drawings by his contemporaries, including Sebastiano and Marco Ricci, Francesco Zuccarelli and Giovanni Battista Piazzetta.

The talk “Yeats, the Coinage Committee and designing a new Ireland” with historian Maeve Casserly (NLI) will mark the 90th anniversary of the Coinage Committee, chaired by William Butler Yeats. The committee was tasked with designing a new coin for the Irish Free State.

The Moving Crib of the St. Martin Apostolate is a whole basement full of handcrafted figures in front of painted backgrounds of nativity related scenes. There are 14 scenes, beginning with Adam and Eve and finishing with Christmas. Nearly all figures are moving and this historic crib, which was created in 1956, still fascinates children and even adults.

I was there two years ago and it is indeed fascinating. It won’t blow you away, but your kids will probably be a lot more impressed than you!! ;-)

Admission is free, but for the upkeep of the crib, a donation is very much appreciated.

The opening times are 27 Nov-06 January: 11:00-18:00. (Closed on 25+26 Dec and 01 Jan)

The National Foodball Exhibition has been launched in Dublin and will be on show from 02-09 December and will then travel to seven other venues around Ireland until 2020 and will finally be in Dublin again in June 2020.

“The Exhibition is made up of six zones, with each zone designed to give you an overview of the various different aspects of football in Ireland, the impact this has around the country, some of your favourite and most memorable National and International moments and a look at some of the most iconic moments over the last 60 years of the EUROs. The zones will be made up of memorabilia displays and interactive stations with videos, quizzes and an opportunity to step up to the mic and record your own commentary.”

There is also an app for Android and iOS that will serve as an audio guide when you are at the exhibition.

I’d say this is a MUST GO exhibition for every fan of Irish Football!

The Dublin Flea Christmas Market is back and this year it will run over two weekends and again from Thursday until Sunday. It will happen again at the Point Village, in the same building where the cinema is. Admission is free and the opening hours are Thurs + Fri 12:30-18:30. The two market weekends are 06-09 December and 13-16 December.

At each weekend there will be approx. 140 stalls at the market, but the second weekend will have DIFFERENT stalls than the first, so don’t just go on once weekend and think you are done. You have to come the second weekend as well. ;-)

This is the biggest Christmas Market in Dublin this year. It is an indoor market in a modern building, so not really comparable to the Christmas Markets I keep raving about (and which we don’t have in Ireland), but at least it is a “big market at Christmas”.

Parking is a problem in the area. There is a multistorey car park, but it is pricey and limited in space. So if possible come by LUAS.

A Christmas Craft Market is taking place in Temple Bar during the week (Thursday and Friday).

This is a tour of the exhibition “Yeats: The Life and Works of William Butler Yeats”. The tour introduces William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) – one of the great poets of the twentieth century – and his many interests, including literature, folklore, theatre, politics, the occult, and Irish cultural identity. After the tour, you can listen to a selection of voices speaking some of his best loved poems, including Easter 1916.

Admission is free.

The next Thursday Lates in the National Gallery has the theme “Celebrating Herstory”. It is a cultural evening event and this month, it celebrates the lives and creativity of women.

There will be music, special guided tours, activities, and nail art and all ages are welcome: individuals, families and friends!

Every Thursday the Little Museum of Dublin waives their admission charges for two guided tours thanks to sponsorship from Guinness. The first tour is at 18:00 and the second tour is at 19:00. Make sure that you are there at least 10 minutes before the start of the tour to get one of the limited places.

The Little Museum of Dublin has a fascinating collection of artefacts from the last 100 years Dublin’s history.

On other days and other times, admission is EUR 10 for adults and admission is by guided tour only.

The Momentum Acting Studio teaches a Foundation Acting Course and on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (05+06+07 Dec) the students that came to an end of that training will present the scenes they have prepared.

A Fun Pub Quiz takes place in Brady’s in Terenure on Thurs. The quiz will be on every Thursday night in the Lounge at Brady’s. Keith McLoughlin is the Quiz Master.

There will be six rounds of the quiz with picture questions, audio questions and general knowledge questions. Admission to the quiz is free and therr will be free drink vouchers for the winning and runner up teams. (No phones to get answers allowed.)

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

A weekly Trad Music Night is taking place in McLoughlin’s in Dun Laoghaire. It is an acoustic night and all musicians are welcome. Admission is free.

Every Thursday a free Trad Session takes place in McNeills and often there are high profile Trad musicians performing.

The Woolshed Karaoke is happening every Thursday from 21:30. Anyone can participate! Admission is free.

The Designer Dublin Christmas Market will take place on the Forecourt of Bank of Ireland at College Green. It only is a 1-day market on the Friday and is organised by the Local Enterprise Office to promote Designers and Crafts people that the Enterprise Office supports.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition about Dublin’s History and you should definitely check it out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.

Hugh Lane First Friday Culture Club will invite to a visit to Niamh McCann’s exhibition “Furtive Tears” with Michael Dempsey.

In collaboration with Dublin’s Culture Connects, the Gallery’s First Friday Culture Club offers the opportunity for engaging with the Gallery’s education, collection, conservation and temporary exhibitions programmes in a fun and relaxed way. Each talk is followed by tea/coffee and further discussion.

The Dun Laoghaire Christmas Market will open on 24 November and run until 23 December every Friday from 12:30-19:00 and on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00-19:00. The market area is not huge, it goes along the “Metals”, which is from the Dun Laoghaire’s MarineRoad near the City Hall (40 Foot Pub) towards the LexiCon library along the Queen’s Road, along the harbour.

There will be a number of stalls with art and craft and seasonal food. A Vintage Funfair with Ferris Wheel will run in parallel with the Christmas Market.

The Pop-up talk “Portraits – the likeness or the backstory?” will take place in Room 23.

Tom Hodson will talk about the requirements of portraying well-known national figures on one hand and the greater freedom of depicting a self-chosen subject on the other hand.

“Women in a Viking World- The Finglas Burial in Context” is a talk that is part of the “Culture Club” series of events.

The Viking female burial found at Finglas in 2004 was richly furnished and was the first to be discovered in Ireland for over 100 years. Maeve Sikora, Keeper of Irish Antiquities, National Museum of Ireland will look at the evidence for female burial in the early Viking Age in the collection of the National Museum of Ireland and explore how gender was expressed through grave-goods.

“Soirée Karaoké Spéciale Noël” is a Christmas Karaoke in the Alliance Francaise on Friday from 19:00.

There will even be prizes: French courses, AF Memberships and goodie bags are to be won in different categories: Best singer, Worst singer, Best Impression or Best Xmas Jumper.

Song selections are not limited to French language and everyone is welcome.
