Hi all!
After last week’s surprisingly early arrival of the Dublin Event Guide, this week it is late again and I know now for pretty certain, that this can’t be easily changed UNLESS I give up my day job. If there is a BIG sponsor hiding behind a bush and waiting for me to ask, NOW would be a good time to come forward and declare your great intentions. :-)
[quads id=1]
On the events end of the business: Lot’s of events, but no really big ones. Mind you the Science Week is happening this week and there are a whole range of free events. So I’d say you find something easy enough! Enjoy!
The fund raising to pay for the bills is not looking good at all and has not recovered the bill now stands at a total of EUR 305, which means that the October bill is still not paid. :-O This makes it extremely difficult to continue the Dublin Event Guide. If you can support the Dublin Event Guide, especially if you have never before done so, I would appreciate your help. I am suggesting a very fair EUR 12 for the year, that’s just 23 cent per Dublin Event Guide Edition or just about 2 pints for 52 (!) editions of the Dublin Event Guide! That’s not much if you think about how much value the Dublin Event Guide brings you every week! Higher and lower donations are also appreciated! Every Euro counts!
If you are a great and helpful person, you can help via PayPal here or if you don’t like PayPal too much you can also go to GoFundMe here. THANK YOU!!
And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide.com/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!
++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.
You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 80,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week’s Feel Good Slot quote is one that spoke to me:
Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end. – Seneca.
Everything that has started will come to an end at SOME point after the start, Without ends, there won’t be any new beginnings, though! So we should endorse the ends as new opportunities.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Jutta B-S, Mary P, Ann M, Roberta B and Aisling B were so great to help with a very much needed donation. Thanks! Every cent counts and without all these contributions the Dublin Event Guide won’t continue.
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
Science Week is the big event this week and at the end of the week, there will also be the Dublin Book Festival.
I will be at the Remembrance Run in Phoenix Park where we will sing with the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir and then the singing continues at 19:30 in Gardiner Street Church in case you are interested.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

Facebook is making a BIG statement in Dublin
Facebook has announced on Thursday that they will buy the complete campus of the former AIB Bank Centre in Ballsbridge, opposite the RDS. This is a huge office complex that consists of approx. 9 big buildings around a plaza. The amount of money they are paying for it has not been revealed, but indications are that it is in the region of hundreds of millions.
Facebook currently has around 2000 employees in Dublin and that number could grow to around 7,000 (if I interpret the article on RTE.ie correctly) at the new site. Renovations are required at the former AIB Bank Centre, so Facebook employees won’t start to move in for a while and will then move there from the current locations over 3-4 years.

The former “Opportunities” section is now the place where the weekly event map from Energia was featured, but this map is now going into hibernation until spring.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/whats-on/events-in-leinster-dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

World War I stories from the National Gallery
11:00 – 16:00, Sat 10 Nov
90 Merrion Square West, Dublin 2
The special event “Perspectives: World War I stories from the National Gallery of Ireland” is an opportunity to visit a new exhibition of material, highlighting stories of World War I in the Sir Denis Mahon Reading Room at No. 90 Merrion Square West.
Coinciding with the centenary of the armistice which ended Word War I in November 1918, the material on display gives an insight into artistic and social life of this important time. The exhibition also features, for the first time in Ireland, sketchbooks by Bice Visconti (1883-1962), an Italian artist who volunteered with the Italian Red Cross.
Access to this exhibition is normally by appointment only, but it will be open for walk-ins on Saturday 10 November and Sunday 11 November. (If you want to make an appointment to view the exhibition on another day, contact library@ngi.ie or call 01 6633546.)

The Dublin Food Co-op will open their new shop on Saturday. It is just a normal shop in Kilmainham with no room for any of the markets like the old location at Newmarket Square provided. For that reason, after the launch there is probably not much to report here about the Food Co-op anymore. It was great while it lasted, but at least as far as events are concerned, a new chapter will begin now. Good luck Food Co-op people! ;-)
There will be some surprises and kids entertainment at the opening event.

Inti macy – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 10 Nov
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Inti macy” and it will run from 19 October until 24 February. (You probably see that there is a space in the middle of the exhibition title. That is to trick any spam filter that doesn’t like too private or personal words. In the following text I will use “Personal Connection” as a replacement title.)
The exhibition is looking at Personal Space and Personal Connection. What does it mean to be connected? And what really is connection? Can we connect virtually or does it have to be real?
Some of the most interesting exhibits are:
+ Companion Cat and Robot Flatmate + Hello Machine, a phone system for spontaneous conversations with strangers + Measure your Personal Space + A virtual reality system that allows visitors to experience the world through the eyes and body of another person.
The website below lists all exhibits and provides some explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.
All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.
I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Science Week 2018
09:00, Sun 11 Nov
Dublin (various locations)
Science Week 2018 will take place from 11-18 November and it will come with a number of free events in various locations around Dublin. All events are listed at www.sfi.ie/events/ but then you have th change the parameters for your search on the left. Choose Dublin then scroll down to the bottom of the page, choose for Audience “adults, children, families, General Public” and then for Admission only choose “free”.
There are approx. 42 free events in Dublin and I TRIED to include at least the most interesting ones in this Dublin Event Guide, but the interface for the search is sooo clumsy and awkward that it is a pain to gather the details for numerous events. So you will have to check yourself unfortunately. I blame the organisers (Science Foundation Ireland) for the bad website. ;-)
Here are some event headlines to tempt you:
Science of Confidence Printfest – Museum Demonstration Day Art in Mind The Science of Star Wars with Jon Chase How UCD are building Ireland’s first ever Satellite VACCINES: HEALTH, TRUST AND EVIDENCE Decoding Cancer: Why Believe in Science Healing through Art – Whisper & Beyond Let’s Go To The Moon – Apollo 11 My Thesis in a Comic Strip

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00, Sun 11 Nov
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

A Silent Transformation – Documentary Screening
19:00 – 21:00, Wed 14 Nov
St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra Road Upper, Drumcondra, Dublin 9
Co-operative Housing Ireland, the DCU Sustainable Living Society & The Dublin Food Co-op are inviting to the screening of the documentary “A Silent Transformation” in the Heaney Lecture Theatre on DCU’s St Patrick’s Campus in Drumcondra.
“A Silent Transformation is a documentary film about a movement towards a post-Capitalist future. With the current system leaving the most vulnerable members of society behind, with the powerful forces conceiving of everything as a commodity from which to extract value, the co-operative movement pursues a different vision. A vision that radically challenges commonly-held notions about work, ownership, entrepreneurship, democracy and collective agency. A vision that is becoming a lived reality in communities across Canada. A vision that is engaging ordinary Canadians to take charge of their economic future. While progressive movements, from Occupy Wall Street to Black Lives Matter, have been pressing for political change, the co-operative movement has been revolutionizing the economy through A Silent Transformation.”

Robotics Petting Zoo – Drop-in activity
11:00 – 19:00, Fri 16 Nov
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
With an ageing population, personal closeness for the eldery will become an important topic for research. Animals have shown great promise in building valuable social relations, but live animals are not feasible in every context. Therefore, research has been interested in robotic alternatives. The most well researched companion robot is Paro the seal with lots of benefits, but a too high price point. Research is exploring if we can achieve similar benefits with more reasonably priced alternatives.
The Science Gallery invites you to come into the FOR PLAY gallery for a drop-in visit at any time between 11.00 and 19.00 on Friday 16th November. Take some time to pet the visiting robotics animals and explore the different types available, while providing researchers with important information about which you prefer and why.

Excavations and Artefacts from Glendalough – Talk
11:30 – 12:15, Fri 16 Nov
National Museum, Kildare Street (Archaeology), Dublin 2
The next Culture Club event is the lectture “Excavations and Artefacts from the Monastic complex at Glendalough, Co. Wicklow”.
The cluster of eleventh to twelfth century iconic churches, centred on the two lakes at Glendalough, is the epitome of a major Irish ecclesiastical site. Despite this we know little of what the settlement looked like and how it changed over time? What do artefacts tell us about the lives of the people who used the site? This talk will focus in particular on the results of excavations undertaken by the School of Archaeology, UCD.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that
Useless laws in Ireland? Why only here?
In some parts of Dublin, there is a problem with motorised youths on footpaths and in parks. They use quadbikes and small motorbikes (nicknamed “scramblers”) and in 2016 a total of 71 people got injured and in 2017, 62 people suffered injuries, Now I have to be honest and admit that I don’t really care about injuries to people that drive them. It is only injuries to people that are hit by them that count.
You would think that if an illegal vehicle is used (the quadbikes and motorbikes have no insurance and pay no tax), the gardai would make sure that the bikes will be impounded and the drivers will be charged and punished. You would think that! But that is not what is happening!
Instead it emerged this week that Gardai are told NOT to pursue quad bikes and it also emerged that Irish laws are not so clear on what a street is.
I can’t get my head around this: There are around 190 countries in this world and there are many countries (mainly in Europe) where the legal system is quite similar to the system in Ireland. If ANY one of these countries has effective laws and effective law enforcement in ANY area that Ireland can’t get under control, why do our lawmakers not just copy the laws that others have put in place?
We constantly hear of loop holes for drunken drivers. Now there is a problem with quadbikes and motorbikes and there are many other areas as well where the Irish laws are ineffective. Is it that our law makers are just not smart enough or why can’t they get it sorted?
Here is an example of a story that shows the ineffectiveness of laws and law enforcement.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com. BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information. Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
