Hi all!

I can’t believe we are already in October! Last time I blinked it was at the Festival of World Cultures in Dun Laoghaire. Were did the whole September disappear to? Today I saw Christmas sweets in a shop and I already see October racing by. Sooo many things to do! :-) But on the other hand, it is better to be busy than to be bored, isn’t it. I am usually busy and am doing lots of things and have lots of hobbies and could do with some more hours. But even my days usually ;-) only have 24 hours. A lot of time (at least 24 hours every week) I spent on Event Guide related things. It is only a hobby and I don’t make my living from it, but it is fun and I enjoy it and I want to take the opportunity to thank you all for your supporting e-mails, for spreading the word about this newsletter and for helping with donations. I said it a number of times before: To me this is a Dublin Event Guide Community! We are all in it together! If you want to be part of it, you are more than welcome. Sure, I am the one who is writing the looong :-) e-mail every week but without your feedback, your supportive words, your suggestions for improvements this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) would not exist.

Last week I asked you to help spreading the word so that we can reach the magical number of 5000 members in the Dublin Event Guide Community and I was impressed by your help! Thanks for telling so many more people than usual. ;-) And a BIG welcome to all new subscribers. You are very very welcome. If you are surprised/shocked/amazed about how long this mail is, I can understand that. :-) But it is only so long because there are sooo many free events taking place in Dublin every week. After last week’s Culture Night (I was busy going from exhibition to theatre to the Alliance Francaise then the Europa House and then the Science Gallery for the last few minutes of the great Bubble exhibition) this weekend gives us a chance to take it easy. :-) Use your dublinbikes card if the weather is good, or go to some of the markets on Sat or Sun. Or meet some friends for a coffee (I might just do that!). Once the weekend is over, then you can start getting ready for the busy Wednesday and the VERY busy Thursday and Friday. With Open House, the Darklight Festival, a new Science Gallery Exhibition and the Oktoberfest all starting at the end of the coming week, a little bit of a break might not be a bad idea. I will definitely go to the Oktoberfest and the Science Gallery on Thursday.

MORE PUBS IN TROUBLE
It is odd that a company even with relatively full pubs and the highest prices in town still can get into serious trouble. Capital Bars, who own some of the most popular, most frequented and of the most expensive pubs in Dublin (Café en Seine, Break for the Border, The George, The Dragon, Howl at the Moon, Zanzibar) has a forecasted turnover of 27 million in 2009, but with approx 139 mio debt, it is not looking good. Capital Bars once was one of the biggest pub chains in Ireland, but now they expect that there COULD be a chance of survival for Café en Seine, The George, Howl at the Moon and Zanzibar. For the rest, the Trinity Capital Hotel on Pearse Street, Break for the Border and Grafton Capital Hotel near St Stephen’s Green and the Dragon on South Great Georges Street, things look a lot worse! In separate news, I heard a rumour that Eamonn Doran’s in Crown Alley (opposite the Bad Ass Cafe) in Temple Bar is about to or has closed down, but please check that one for yourself.

SUPERNATURAL FOOD MARKET
The Supernatural Food Market (check the Regular Events section on Saturday where it is mentioned every week) are looking for dedicated volunteers for their venue in Pearse Street. Volunteers are needed for the early morning set up 07:30-09:00 and clear away in the afternoons 16:00-17:30. Anyone who can give regular help receives their grocery shopping for cost price in return! At the food market you can also get a 10% discount if you are a pensioner or if you are unemployed (bring some proof).

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED – FOCUS IRELAND
Focus Ireland, the housing and homeless charity that works to prevent people becoming, remaining or returning to homelessness through the provision of quality services, supported housing and advocacy, is looking for volunteers for their “Key to a Home” collection day on Fri 20 November. Focus Ireland want to help people who are homeless in out of the cold this winter but cannot do this without a strong team of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers. Volunteers will be working in teams selling Focus Ireland key rings in busy locations throughout the day. You are needed from 07:30-13:30 or from 13:30-19:30. SOME BLIND ALLEYS BANNER COMPETITION
Greg Baxter from Some Blind Alleys, an online journal of contemporary Irish writing and visual art, informed me about a competition they are currently running. It is a Banner Competition for designers and visual artists and full details can be found here:

Six banners will be chosen from all entries and each will appear on Some Blind Alleys for one month, with a link to the artist’s/designer’s site, plus a bio and an accompanying image of the artist’s choice. The TOP Ideal Home Show will take place on the RDS in Ballsbridge from 23-26 October (Bank Holiday weekend). DUBLIN THEATRE FESTIVAL
The Dublin Theatre Festival continues until 11 Oct and the public “performance” Playhouse, where Liberty Hall is turned into a giant (low-resolution) TV screen continues every evening.. SCULPTURE IN CONTEXT – BOTANIC GARDEN
Sculpture In Context is an exhibition that runs from 03 Sept-16 Oct in the Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin. The aim of the exhibition is to provide space for exhibiting work of sculptors in venues outside of the normal gallery context. This is the 8th year that the Exhibition has been held at Glasnevin. Sculpture In Context is the largest outdoor Sculpture exhibition held in Ireland. The sculptures are the work of more than one hundred leading Irish and international artists; some notable names being Cliodhna Cussen, Seamus Gill, Leo Higgins, Pieter Koning, Bob Quinn, Deirdre Rogers and many others. The artwork, which is produced in a large range of materials, will be displayed around the beautiful, tranquil surroundings of the National Botanic Gardens; in the Great Palm House, the Curvilinear Range, throughout the Gardens and the smaller works being exhibited in the Gallery of the Visitor Centre. Artists contributing to the exhibition are challenged to respond creatively to the Gardens and to specific locations in the Gardens. Admission is free. HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD PLAZA
And another month over: Every first Sunday of the month, the horse traders from Dublin and surrounding areas come together and sell and buy horses on Smithfield Plaza. This tradition is in place for many many years and after the modernisation of Smithfield Plaza, Dublin City tried to move the market to another location. This has not been successful yet and consequently the horse market is still a monthly feature in the City Centre. It starts relatively early in the morning and goes on until all traders have left, which is around 13:00. If you want to experience this somewhat anachronistic event, you should consider coming relatively early. I would recommend around 09:00-10:00 experience it at its peak. I know that there are concerns about the welfare of the animals and I do know that ISPCA representatives are supervising the horse market. Please note that I am not suggesting that you buy a horse there or that you support the horse traders in any inappropriate acts. Instead I am only reporting that this event is taking place and that it might interest some of you to watch the trading or the horses.

CRAFTY MARKET
“Visit the Crafty Market, Newmarket Square, Dublin 8 this Sunday and the first Sunday of every month! It is an interesting Art & Crafts Market in Dublin’s Coombe district, a five minutes’ walk from St. Patrick’s Cathedral. 45 stall holders set out their wares in an indoor market for you to browse and buy. Don’t pay through the nose for handicrafts in exclusive shops when you can purchase them straight from the artist in a fun market environment where haggling is encouraged. NATIONAL TRAILS DAY
The National Trails Day is a celebration of Ireland’s variety of trails and a chance for everyone to enjoy the Irish countryside, forests, mountains and lakes. In 2008 more than 6000 people took part in more than 67 events on that day. This year even more interesting events are added and the organisers hope for even more people to join them. Some of the events taking place on 04 Oct in Dublin are:

GUINNESS FUN TRIATHLON – PHOENIX PARK
Registration for this event is closed, but you can watch it or at least parts of it. The swimming takes place in an indoors pool, but the cycling and the running will be in Phoenix Park on Sun 04 Oct. POVERTY REQUIEM – 1ST REHEARSAL
A few weeks ago I told you about the Poverty Requiem that will be performed on UN World Poverty Day (17 Oct) in St. Anne’s Church in Dawson Street. This is a reminder for the people that have signed up already…but if you are interested in taking part, it is not too late yet. The 1st rehearsal for this unique choral event is on Sun 04 Oct at 12.30 in the Chapel in Belvedere College, Denmark St. Dublin 1. PLANT CONVERSATION IN UGANDA – LECTURE – BOTANIC GARDENS
“Linking community development and plant conservation in Uganda” is the full title of a lecture on Wed 07 Oct by Dr Darach Lupton, a botanist at the National Botanic Gardens. The Gardens at Glasnevin are working with a number of Ugandan botanic gardens to promote the links between conservation of economically important plants groups and poverty alleviation. Dr Lupton will talk about his fascinating trip to Uganda in April 2009 and focus on the aims of the ongoing projects, some of which include the development of community based medicinal plant gardens and the documenting of local knowledge relating to plants and their traditional uses in Uganda. What if… we lived in a society where our every thought was public?
These are just some of the questions asked in the upcoming exhibition, probing the space between reality and the impossible and where designers meet scientists to explore the future. DARKLIGHT FESTIVAL 2009
Since its inception in 1999, Darklight Festival has brought new and exciting work to Irish audiences through cinema, exhibition and performance and to an international audience via the Internet and Touring Programme initiated in 2002. Darklight is Ireland’s premier festival for filmmakers, animators and artists whose work explores the convergence of art, film and technology. Lots of events are free, which is something that has to be praised explicitly. The venue is mainly in the Smithfield area (with some exceptions) and the festival starts on Thurs 08 Oct and continues until Sun 11 Oct. OPEN HOUSE 2009
When you read the description of this event some of you might start to yawn. It doesn’t sound too exciting “Open House 2009 – Ireland’s largest architectural event Open House Dublin returns from 08-11 Oct with a special focus on ‘Dublin’s Architecture – The New Generation’. The programme will feature a cross-section of Dublin’s most innovative designs – from the city’s newest urban quarters at Heuston Gate and in the Docklands to pioneer schemes that offer exemplary ways of living and working in the city and cleverly configured private residences and extensions.” However think of it this way: Liberty Hall, the tallest building in Dublin will be knocked down relatively soon. This might be your last chance to get to the very top. – Iveagh House on Stephen’s Green is normally the Department of Foreign Affairs, if you would like to know how it looks inside (it is really beautiful!) then THIS is your chance. The main part of Open House 2009 takes place on Sat and Sun (10-11 Oct) and I will write more about it next week, but have a look at architecturefoundation.ie/openhouse/ to plan your weekend a little. ARCHITECTURE DEBATE – LIBERTY HALL
The Irish Architecture Foundation (IAF) invites you to attend ‘Can Architecture Save the World?’, an open debate on the current state of architecture and its effects on the environment and on communities. PAULANER OKTOBERFEST – GEORGE’S DOCK, IFSC
I had already voiced concerns that it might not be back, but luckily I was wrong. The Paulaner Oktoberfest is back for a second year in Dublin. For 11 days Dublin’s George’s Dock will be filled with sounds of Bavarian music and smells of delicious food and lots of beer. From 08-18 Oct some of the Munich Oktoberfest atmosphere will be available in Dublin.
You might wonder if it is really such a great event and I have to be honest with you: The music is not really my thing, the beer is not a big attraction to me and some of the food I had never tasted before (other dishes I know well), but having been in Ireland for a long time, the odd (but very tasty) food like “Pig’s Trotters” strangely attracts me in a big way. :-)
The Mostland Stürmers will play traditional Bavarian brass and dance music, over thirty German speciality food producers and traders will sell their products and specialities from sausages, meat, pastries, Käsealm (German mountain cheese) to German candy and ginger bread hearts will be available. Bavarian style wheat beer (including a non-alcoholic version) and a special Oktoberfest brew will be available and if you have time, just give it a go! ;-)

The National College or Ireland is bringing the “Legends in your Lunchtime” series back by popular demand. From 30 Sept-11 Nov a whole range of prominent speakers will talk about their life/job/business and you can listen and often even ask. RDS DARWIN LECTURE
The RDS has an very interesting free public lecture coming up:
The RDS Darwin200 Public Lecture: “Fragile Web, What Next for Nature?” will take place on Tues 24 November in the RDS Concert Hall at 19:00. In celebration of Darwin200 and to mark the 150th anniversary of the publication of ‘The Origin of Species’ by Charles Darwin, the RDS has invited Professor Jonathan Silvertown who will be speaking on the matter of biodiversity. This lecture marks the fourth in the series of RDS Irish Times ‘Ireland in 2030’ lectures which aims to look at the serious long-term challenges that face us today. LISBON – YES OR NO?
Some of you might have voted already this morning, many will leave it until this evening, but the majority of the readers of this newsletter is not even allowed to say YES or NO! So, I won’t go on too much, but there are a few things that I find odd about the whole pre-referendum battles.
The most interesting thing was that both sides were TOTALLY blinkered: The YES side did see absolutely no fault in the Lisbon Treaty and the NO side did see absolutely no benefits in the treaty. And both claimed that they are pro-Europe (even most on the No side claimed that). The unquestioning positiveness of the YES side annoys me and the totally of the wall claims of the NO side nearly make me furious. But if you look at the more moderate comments, then both sides have some good points. If I were allowed to vote, I guess I would be somewhat torn as well. The democratic deficit of the treaty and to some extent of the referendum is worrying, but Ireland at the fringes of Europe is a LOT more worrying. So in balance, my vote would be for the “Yes” side, but I would feel a little uneasy with it.
If you are allowed to vote, I am sure you heard enough to make up your mind. But please, if you are allowed to vote, do make use of this privilege! Don’t leave it to other people. And one other thing: This vote is for or against the Lisbon Treaty. Your opinion about NAMA or Brian Cowen should be expressed in the next national election. If you mix the two then you might not really get what you want.
