Áras an Uachtaráin is the residence of the President of Ireland in the middle of Phoenix Park. It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th ‘occasional residence’ for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:

+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil

A Ceremonial Military Guard will parade at the site of the “National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces who died in the Service of the State”, at Merrion Square during July and August. Ceremonies will take place at the pyramid at Merrion Square opposite the back entrance to the Dail, every Saturday from 14 July to 18 August 2018.

Units from different sections of the Defence Forces (Army, Air Corps and Naval Service) will participate in this Military Guard Ceremony to remember their comrades. Qi gong is a traditional Chinese form of meditation coordinating slow flowing movement, deep rhythmic breathing, and a calm state of mind.

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

The Dublin Cycling Campaign wants to find out from women who use a bicylce in Dublin about their experiences.

The event description is a little confusing though. It starts with this paragraph

“Why do you think only 30% of cyclists in Dublin are women? What factors are holding us back? What would encourage more women to get on two wheels around the city? What sort of planning do you do when you plot a route around the city?”

But then in the second paragraph the event is described as “Join Dublin Cycling Campaign for a listening session about street harassment of women who cycle,…”

The Dublin Ukulele Collective are performing their annual concert in aid of Irish Guide Dogs on Sunday at the Harbour Plaza on the Marine Road in Dun Laoghaire.

I wasn’t able to find out if this event is free, but given the (outdoor) venue, I assume that admission is free and donations are very welcome.

“Hands on History: Dress to Impress” is a Drop-in activity for all ages.

This is a drop-in handling session for all ages, a chance to explore the clothing and outfits from the museums collection of objects for handling and try some on for size.

“In conversation: Steve Simpson” is a conversation between Steve Simpson, the gallery’s Circus250 artist-in-residence, and Sinead K. Rice (Head of Education). The talk will take place in the Millennium Wing Studio where Steve has been based for the last month, creating new work inspired by our Circus250: Art of the Show exhibition.

Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

This Culture Club event features the exhibition of German-American artist Andrea Geyer, called “When We”. ‘When We’ consists of several recent works by Geyer as well as the new immersive work Collective Weave (Ireland), 2018, commissioned by IMMA for this exhibition. Geyer’s work provokes a radical re-thinking of time.

Culture Club is organised by the Culture Connects Project in Dublin. Groups and individuals from all over Dublin are brought to a range of cultural venues throughout the year, including museums, galleries and libraries. Culture Club begins with a tour of an exhibition, given by a tour guide and ends with a Tea & Chats session. The Tea & Chats are facilitated discussions where people get the opportunity to reflect on their experience, learn from and connect with one another.

Debórah Dwork is the Rose Professor of Holocaust History and Founding Director of the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University. She will be in the Long Room Hub to give the talk “”Where are you?” Looking for Loved Ones after the Holocaust”

A free guided tour will take place at the National War Memorial at Islandbridge every Wednesday at 14:00 from March until the end of October.

The tour will focus on World War I, in which nearly 50,000 Irish soldiers died. You will also hear about the main features of the gardens at this tour.

The next Film Screening in the Spanish Film Club will be “La Isla Mínima” (Marshland), Director: Alberto Rodríguez Librero, (2014) 105 min.

At the beginning of the 80s, two teenage girls are murdered in a small Andalusian town. Two policemen, ideologically opposed, are sent from Madrid to investigate the disappearance. In a community anchored in the past, they will have to face not only a cruel murderer, but also their own ghosts.

The Spanish Film Club show a selection of Spanish language films on the third Wednesday of the month. Films are in Spanish with English language subtitles. (In association with the Instituto Cervantes Dublin.)

As part of the “Summer Talks at Marlay House” programme, the talk “The Kingstown/Dalkey Atmospheric Train 1844-1854 – a marvel of Victorian engineering.” with Tom Conlon will take place.

This was the world’s first commercial vacuum-driven train. A steam-driven vacuum pump located in Dalkey evacuated air from a pipe between the rails of a train. A piston in the pipe pulled the train uphill all the way to Dalkey, a distance of 1800 metres. At its peak, it ran 35 trains a day. In 1854, the line was leased by the Waterford, Wexford, Wicklow and Dublin Railway Company and quickly converted for conventional locomotive trains. The talk will feature original engineering plans which have rarely been seen in the past 100 years.

Grangegorman Military Cemetery is in Blackhorse Avenue just outside Phoenix Park. It is the largest military cemetery in Ireland. It was first opened in 1876 to serve as a graveyard for the soldiers of what was then Marlborough Barracks, now McKee Barracks, and their families. Specific zones were laid out for English, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian service men. The cemetery’s pedestrian gate is open from 10:00-16:00 seven days a week.

The Irish Wildlife Trust host this family friendly event which features a brief wildlife talk in the library followed by a walk in the local park, exploring the wildlife found there.

The talk in the library will be followed by a walk in Blessington Basin Park to explore the wildlife.

The Temple Bar Craft Market during the week is back and it has moved to Thursdays in 2018. Organised by the Temple Bar Company the market will bring handcrafted jewellery, wood design, handmade soaps, original art, photography, fashion, specialised cards and stained-glass crafts.

The market starts at 14:00 and finishes at 20:00, but is still carrying the totally nonsensical and completely misleading name “Temple Bar NIGHT Market”. I will just ignore this unsuitable and incorrect name and will rename it to “Temple Bar Craft Market”. ;-)

Batty about Bats is an interactive hands-on workshop for the whole family: Learn all about bat species, their natural history and where to find them. The workshop includes a variety of hands-on activities exploring echolocation, bat detectors and investigating what you can do to support bat populations in your area as well as tips on bat conservation.

Every Thursday the Little Museum of Dublin waives their admission charges for two guided tours thanks to sponsorship from Guinness. The first tour is at 18:00 and the second tour is at 19:00. Fusion bands Nix Moon (Eastern Psychedelic Folk Jazz) and Joyce & the Sonic Gypsies (Ethnic Prog) will play a gig in Sin E. It all will be presented by “Pyramania Sessions”.

Every Thursday a Singer Songwriter Night will take place in Mother Reilly’s in Rathmines. This is YOUR chance to show everyone what you can do, alternatively you can just listen to the talented Singer/Songwriters. Admission is free.

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

A weekly Trad Music Night is taking place in McLoughlin’s in Dun Laoghaire. It is an acoustic night and all musicians are welcome. Admission is free.

Every Thursday a free Trad Session takes place in McNeills and often there are high profile Trad musicians performing.

The movie “The Greatest Showman” with Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron will be screened at this last Movie on the Beach event in Bray. The screen will be located at the Bray harbour wall and the screening will start when it is dark, shortly after 22:00. Screenings are subject to change without notice and are dependant on weather.

The Woolshed Karaoke is happening every Thursday from 21:30. Anyone can participate! Admission is free.

The Harleys are a popular coverband and they will be in the Mezz every Wednesday at midnight.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition about Dublin’s History and you should definitely check it out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.

The Pop-up talk “Drawing Dublin: The changing face of a city” will take place in the Print Gallery of the National Gallery at 11:15 on Friday.

Join Niamh MacNally, co-curator of the Drawing Dublin exhibition, for a free pop-up talk about the scenes of Dublin that are on display.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings every day of the week. Currently there is at least one free tour every day. Check their website for details. Some special events will be listed separately.

The Cemetery at Arbour Hill is the last resting place of 14 of the leaders of the 1916 Rising. Among those buried there are Pádraig Pearse, James Connolly and Thomas Clarke. This tour every Friday introduce the Cemetery and will also explain the background and the event of the Easter Rising.

Admission is free and no booking necessary. The meeting point is inside the cemetery gates.

The TramCafe is the venue for Dublin’s only after work Jazz event on a Friday. The Cafe Duo will play every Friday Jazz, Soul and Bossa Nova.

The next play in the Abbey Theatre (on the Peackock Theatre Stage) will be “FRNKNSTN”, a daring adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic. It will run from 17 August – 01 September. And the Free First Preview will be on Friday.

The Free First Preview events of the Abbey are previews of plays for which free tickets are available. Tickets will only be available on the night and can not be pre-booked. Only max. one ticket is given out per person in the queue and tickets are given out on a first come, first served basis.

Tickets will be handed out from 18:30, but the queue will form well before that time, so be early!! The show will be on the Peacock Theatre Stage and will start at 20:00. All rules are here.

Whelan’s are lately doing a great job of organising high-quality 3-day weekender festivals and most of them are free.
