A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. The Dublin Quays Festival from 19-23 July will take place in six venues along the Liffey. The venues are The Wiley Fox, The Grand Social, The Workman’s Club, Sin E, Liquor Rooms and the Sound House.

There is no real common thread or link-up between the venues. They all do their own thing, but the common aspect of this Dublin Quays Festival is that all gigs are free and who could complain about that.

Where possible, I will list the different events separately in this and the next Dublin Event Guide… at least for all the pubs that are on my radar.

The Liberties Festival 2018 will take place from 18-22 July. It is the 48th festival this year (!) and there will be five days of music, comedy, opera, yoga, stories, song, dance, coffee, conversation, football, cinema, poetry, art, walking tours, discovery, gardening, printing, family fun & more.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is an indoor food/Farmer’s Market that many know from when it was located at Newmarket Square. Due to the redevelopment at Newmarket Square it had to move and is now on the Old Naas Road, opposite the entrance to the Royal Liver Retail Park. At the new location they are also open on Sundays.

Opening hours are Tue-Fri 12:00-19:00, Sat 09:30-16:00 and also Sunday 11:00-17:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

In July the recruitment process for The Children’s Council 2018/19 will start and there will be taster workshops at 10:00, 12:30 and 15:30 on Saturday. The Children’s Council is free and suitable for children who love drama, music, dance or art and are going into 4th or 5th Class in September. Spaces are limited and it does require commitment and consistent attendance to the program.

Dublin Maker is a day-long festival for hackers, crafters, coders, DIYers and curious inventors. It is a community run, free event in Merrion Square on Saturday and it is suitable for the whole family. Makers are from all fields and all ages and backgrounds and Dublin Maker’s mission is to entertain, inform and connect the makers of Ireland, while inspiring the next generation of Ireland’s makers and inventors.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The County Council Market (CoCo) in Marlay Park is taking place every Saturday and Sunday. You will find a wide range of products. There will be food to eat there and food to cook at home but also crafts and arts and books and lots more.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

The Terenure Bushy Park Market is taking place every weekk. The market has more than 30 stalls, offering a whole variety of foods and crafts.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition that you should definitely check out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.

This Wings Food Fest in Bray is back from Fri-Sun 20-22 July. There will be chicken wings and live music and the event runs from 10:00-18:00 on Saturday and Sunday. 15 chicken wing outlets will sell their wings.

Wing Competitions and BBQ Demonstrations will also take place.

Áras an Uachtaráin is the residence of the President of Ireland in the middle of Phoenix Park. It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th ‘occasional residence’ for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.

Every Saturday a number of public tours take place and admission is free. Tickets will be issued at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day, on a first come, first served basis. Group and/or advance booking is not possible.

The tours will be at 10:15, 11:30, 12:45, 14:00 and 15:15 and take approx. 1 hour.

The Drumcondra Village Market is now the “Art, Bites, Crafts Drumcondra Market”. And as you guessed it, it is an arts and crafts fair in the centre of Drumcondra. :-) There will also be some food and music.

“Irish Women in Science: Maude and the Jellyfish” is the title of this Drop-in Activity that is suitable from Age 8+.

What does a baby jellyfish look like and why was Irishwoman Maude Delap keeping them in her house over 100 years ago? To celebrate her pioneering scientific work, drop into the Discovery Zone at the Museum to learn more about Maude and her homemade aquarium.

Six times this year the “People’s Art 2018″ exhibition will take place. It is an art exhibition on the rails/fence of St. Stephen’s Green.

Visiting the People’s Art Exhibition is free and you will be able to admire (and buy) a huge amount of great art works from the artists themselves. The event starts close to 11:00 and typically finishes around 17:00, it runs from Friday until Sunday with the main activity on Saturday and Sunday.

People’s Art Dublin is a voluntary, part time, non profit making group, brought together by Dublin City Council to promote the visual arts to the public of Dublin. A huge variety of art/paintings are displayed and if the weather is nice it is a great art-filled stroll around Stephen’s Green. Definitely recommended!

The Festival of Curiosity is happening this weekend and the only free event and also one of the very few events that don’t need tickets is the “Playground of Sound: Songs of the City and Sounds of the Sea” on Wolfe Tone Square.

It is a playful outdoor touch-reactive installation for adults. Touch the plants to conduct your own personal choir. Find a partner for the sea-saw to activate the sounds of the sea and hold hands with a friend on the twin-swing to compose the bird-song and hear the dawn chorus – together creating playful and unique songs of the city.

Unfortunately the installation is not suitable for children under 10 years of age.

“Following Her Path: A Walking Tour of Ireland’s Remarkable Women” is a walking tour that takes you on a journey of discovery of the women who shaped Ireland through the centuries, while you casually stroll through Dublin city center.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings every day of the week. Currently there is at least one free tour every day. Check their website for details. Some special events will be listed separately.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:

+ Habitat of a simluated Mars mission
+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
+ Animals that travelled to space
+ A plant growing in Mars atmophere
+ A planet to be built from dead bodies

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

A Ceremonial Military Guard will parade at the site of the “National Memorial to Members of the Defence Forces who died in the Service of the State”, at Merrion Square during July and August. Ceremonies will take place at the pyramid at Merrion Square opposite the back entrance to the Dail, every Saturday from 14 July to 18 August 2018.

Units from different sections of the Defence Forces (Army, Air Corps and Naval Service) will participate in this Military Guard Ceremony to remember their comrades. Every week different units will be involved and the details of the ceremony and the participating units are described on the website below.

The Swords Summer Festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday 21+22 July in Swords Town Park and Swords Castle.

There will be free Family Fun on both days with food village, craft fair, bouncy castles, puppet shows music and zip wire in Swords Town Park.

The Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland’s yearly Sweet Pea Show will take place on Saturday and Sunday in the National Botanic gardens.

“This is your opportunity to see a display of sweet peas grown on cordons by the leading growers in the country. On Saturday morning, over a dozen growers will arrive at the Teak House to transform it into a sweet pea wonderland before the plants are judged.”

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). Marc O’Griofa will explain his experience and answer audiences questions about training NASA astronauts, and will lead a workshop looking at science under the sea. Je is a physician, scientist and aquanaut. In 2016, he made history as the first Irish doctor chosen by NASA to be part of NEEMO, the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operation. He spent eight days living in the world’s only undersea laboratory, five miles off the Florida coast, training astronauts for space travel by simulating spacewalks and experiments under the waves.

Every Saturday a free guided tour will take place in the Chester Betty Library. The tour starts at 14:00.

Take part in this Megalithic Big Draw and decorate a giant paper with megalithic and cave art at the Museum. Learn all about the different designs used by people in the Stone Age to decorate prehistoric tombs in Ireland and create your own hand-print cave art.

Eva + Markus Heizmann from Vienna came in touch with a priest from the Melkite Church in Syria who lived in Austria but had strong connections to Syria still. They helped gathering and transporting charity goods to people in need in Syrand as a result of their experiences in and out of Syria, they became convinced that the conflict in Syria was initiated and unleashed by the western powers, namely the USA, France and England with the help from Turkey, Israel and the oil oligarchies in the gulf region.

They will talk about their trips and experiences in Syria.

The children’s charity OWLS is running an event for adventurous kids on Sunday and it is called “Jump, climb, roll!!”. Make our way through the park but not in the usual way. You will be climbing trees, rolling down hills and leaping over obstacles. Learn about the different plants you find on your way. Suitable for ages 6 to 12.

The event is free at 10:00 in St Anne’s Park and is supported by Dublin City Council.

At 12:30 the version of the South Dublin County Council version of the same event will take place in Corkagh Park, but there an asmission charge of EUR 2 has to be paid.

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “Life at the Edges” and it will run from 22 June until 30 September,

The exhibition is looking at space travel, Mars exploration and it also looks at other hostile or difficult environments like antarctica, volcanoes and living in a floating city.

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:

+ Creating souvenirs from Lava
+ Process of creating an iron ring from grass that grew on iron polluted soil
+ Animals that travelled to space
+ A plant growing in Mars atmophere
+ A planet to be built from dead bodies

It is a fascinating exhibition, but take your time to understand the exhibits and think a little more about some of them! It is worth it!

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.

I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

The Dublin Theatre Festival (DTF) is taking place from 27 Sept – 14 Oct 2018 and I heard that this Tuesday there will be 10 free tickets up for grabs in St. Stephen’s Green for one of the DTF shows. :-O

Ten theatre seats will be placed somewhere in St Stephen’s Green and the first 10 people sitting down on one of the seats will win a pair of tickets for a DTF show. The organisers tell us that the competition starts at 12:30 and you will have to enter the park via the gate under the arch opposite Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre.

I am not sure if there are any other rules or how it will be prevented that people who are already in the park will claim the seat first and it will also be interesting to see how possible mass interest could/might be handled, but I’d say Theatre Festival goers are civilised people so that probably no issues will arise. ;-)

The Pop-up talk “Julie Bonaparte as Queen of Spain” will take place in Room 47. Sasha Smith will talk about Baron François Gérard’s portrait of Julie Bonaparte as Queen of Spain with her Daughters, Zénaïde and Charlotte.

Join Joanne Drum, curator of “Circus250: Art of the Show” as she chats to graphic designer and illustrator Steve Simpson who is the gallery’s Circus250 artist-in-residence. Simpson is in residence in the Millennium Wing Studio from 17 July to 12 August, and will use the Circus250 exhibition and Gallery collection as a source of inspiration for new work.

Ríona Sally Hartman is the first Musician in Residence with Dublin City Public Libraries. Ríona and The Music Library are looking for young adults who want to make music. Over the course of a few months the musician in residence Ríona will guide them from start to finish in writing, playing, recording and performing their own songs. Whether you like to sing, play an instrument, rap, write lyrics or produce they invite young adults interested in making music to come along, meet Ríona, find out more about the project and see if they’d like to sign up for more. The Young Adults Band in Residence will meet weekly, some music experience would be great but not necessary, if you do play an instrument please bring it along.

Grangegorman Military Cemetery is in Blackhorse Avenue just outside Phoenix Park. It is the largest military cemetery in Ireland. It was first opened in 1876 to serve as a graveyard for the soldiers of what was then Marlborough Barracks, now McKee Barracks, and their families. Specific zones were laid out for English, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian service men. The cemetery’s pedestrian gate is open from 10:00-16:00 seven days a week.

The Temple Bar Craft Market during the week is back and it has moved to Thursdays in 2018. Organised by the Temple Bar Company the market will bring handcrafted jewellery, wood design, handmade soaps, original art, photography, fashion, specialised cards and stained-glass crafts.

The market starts at 14:00 and finishes at 20:00, but is still carrying the totally nonsensical and completely misleading name “Temple Bar NIGHT Market”. I will just ignore this unsuitable and incorrect name and will rename it to “Temple Bar Craft Market”. ;-)

Meet the big hand-puppet Freddy the Frog who knows every nursery rhyme. Can you find a rhyme that Freddy doesn’t know? Come and find out! This is an interactive show for the whole family.

At the end of the session there is a chance for parents and kids to get crafty when Freddy shows them how to let a cow jump over the moon! Family event suitable for children age 3-6

For the second time, the National Gallery invites to a Thursday Late \ Summer in the City event. It will take place on Thursday on the Merrion Square Forecourt and Courtyard of the museum and admission is free.

There will be French-themed music, food, drink and creative activities and the the gallery will remain open until 20:30.

From 16:30 you can play Lawn Games, like Giant Jenga and Giant Connect4 and Giant Domino. French-themed food and drinks will be available from 16:30-20:00. DJs will play French tunes. Tropical Popical will “apply” Nail-art inspired by Roderic O’Conor (Bookings open online on Monday 23 July). At 17:30 and 18:30 a tour of the National Gallery with a focus on French artworks will take place. And from 18:00-20:00 the film “The Greatest Showman” will be screened (Admission Charge is EUR 5. Booking via website below). It is a film that is inspired by the legend and ambitions of P.T. Barnum.

A weekly Jazz Club event with live band is taking place at J.W. Sweetman’s.

Every Thursday the Little Museum of Dublin waives their admission charges for two guided tours thanks to sponsorship from Guinness. The first tour is at 18:00 and the second tour is at 19:00. Make sure that you are there at least 10 minutes before the start of the tour to get one of the limited places.

The next play in the Abbey Theatre will be “Jimmy’s Hall”, adapted from Paul Laverty’s film script. It will run from 26 July – 08 Sept. And the Free First Preview will be on Thursday.

The Free First Preview events of the Abbey are previews of plays for which free tickets are available. Tickets will only be available on the night and can not be pre-booked. Only max. one ticket is given out per person in the queue and tickets are given out on a first come, first served basis.

Tickets will be handed out from 18:30, but the queue will form well before that time, so be early!! The show will start at 19:30. All rules are here.

The talk “Paradise Lost? How the financial system is failing climate-change affected countries and what we can do about it” will take place and admission is free.

Climate Change is already having a significant impact on many of the world’s countries, including a disproportionate impact on many of the poorest countries who have done the least to cause it. The financial system, instead of helping these countries rebuild, is in fact making their situation worse. Hear from two experts about how the financial system is failing these countries and the possible steps we can take.

Jurgen Kaiser is the Co-ordinator of Jubilee Germany (Erlassjahr) and will talk about a new plan for debt relief for climate change affected countries. Cliona Sharkey is Policy Advisor with Trócaire and will look at the context of the broader financial system and its effects.

An expatriate or expat is a person temporarily or permanently residing in a country other than that of their citizenship.

And this is a weekly meeting for all Expats in Dublin (new and old!). If you are new to the city, this is an excellent way to meet people.

“Why Ireland has been no country for women & LGBTQ people” is a discussion/talk by Socialist Party and Ruth Coppinger.

It will explore the question “why since its foundation the Irish capitalist State and the Church have made Ireland no country for women, LBGTQ and young people. After the repeal referendum we have been given the impression that progress in Ireland is inevitable, but has this happened? Or can it even happen?

A Table Quiz takes place in the Grand Social. On Thursdays teams of 4 people (or at least 2 people) will compete against each other over questions from the areas of General Knowledge, Music, Film, Sports & Entertainment.

The Crystal Skull Sessions is a band competition in Sin É. A variety of acts perform at each heat and are randomly selected from an ancient skull who determines their faith. The crowd gets to vote for their favourite act to get through to the final.

Every Thursday a Singer Songwriter Night will take place in Mother Reilly’s in Rathmines. This is YOUR chance to show everyone what you can do, alternatively you can just listen to the talented Singer/Songwriters. Admission is free.

A Fun Pub Quiz takes place in Brady’s in Terenure on Thurs. The quiz will be on every Thursday night in the Lounge at Brady’s. Keith McLoughlin is the Quiz Master.

There will be six rounds of the quiz with picture questions, audio questions and general knowledge questions. Admission to the quiz is free and therr will be free drink vouchers for the winning and runner up teams. (No phones to get answers allowed.)

Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

A weekly Trad Music Night is taking place in McLoughlin’s in Dun Laoghaire. It is an acoustic night and all musicians are welcome. Admission is free.

Every Thursday a free Trad Session takes place in McNeills and often there are high profile Trad musicians performing.

The Woolshed Karaoke is happening every Thursday from 21:30. Anyone can participate! Admission is free.

The BIMM Music College is organising the Midnight Hour on Thursdays in Whelan’s. The line-up has not yet been announced.

It has a slightly odd name, but it is a free event and very popular, so we are not complaining. ;-)

The Malahide Has It Festival 2018 will take place from 27-29 July. There will be a Funfair, Face Painting, Balloon Modelling, Kids Treasure Hunt, Kids Storytelling, Historical Walk, Puppet Shows, Tai Chi, Tug o’ war, music and food and it will all take place on the Malahide Green and in New Street.

Unfortunately, though, it is a bit of work to find a schedule of all the activities. The website for Malahide has no information at all and the Facebook Page below has no details (yet?) either. Let’s hope that this will change before Friday.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition about Dublin’s History and you should definitely check it out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.

Opening hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00-17:15.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings every day of the week. Currently there is at least one free tour every day. Check their website for details. Some special events will be listed separately.

“Culture Club: Stories of 19th Century Women in Soldiers & Chiefs” is a tour of the Soldiers & Chiefs exhibition with Siobhán Pierce. It is a journey through the 19th century as experienced by women. The tour will explore the objects on display that relate to the lives of Irish women between the 1840s and 1914 and will examine some stories of women who lived in Dublin 7 at that time.

The Cemetery at Arbour Hill is the last resting place of 14 of the leaders of the 1916 Rising. Among those buried there are Pádraig Pearse, James Connolly and Thomas Clarke. This tour every Friday introduce the Cemetery and will also explain the background and the event of the Easter Rising.
