The whole last week I was away in Germany and only came back on Friday late at night. I visited my family and we celebrated my mother’s birthday at a big event on Thursday. A great time!! This weekend the Youbloom Festival Music Trail has to be mentioned and th fact that the current Science Gallery exhibition closes on Sunday. The Tall Ship Regatta has NO land activities, so that is a bit disappointing. Oh and on Sunday there is a Vintage Car Show in Bray.

Dublin Port River Fest 2018 cancelled
The Dublin Port River Fest was once a BIG and very popular festival along the Liffey on the Northside from the CHQ building nearly to the Point Depot / 3 Arena. That was when the Dublin Dockland’s Authority still existed. When the DDA disappeared and was taken back by Dublin City, the festival shrunk to a fraction from the Convention Centre to half-way to the Point Depot / Arena. It was a poor cousin of the previous event and this was reflected in the visitor numbers.
This year, the news is even worse: The Dublin Port River Fest has been cancelled completely! Yes there will be a “mini-” Tall Ship event, but the focus is on the boats, the crews that come with the boats and the people in Dublin won’t get much more than a pretty view and maybe a visit on some of the ships.
The financial and economic crisis was in 2008, a full 10 years ago, but it seems that Dublin City has singificantly decreased their event programme just in the last 2-3 years. Not a good development! :-(

200 new stationless bikes for hire
Two companies, BleeperBike and Urbo, got a licence from Dublin City to operate stationless bikes for hire and to compete with Dublin Bikes. This is a big step! And it also a development that has advantages and disadvantages.
One year ago, Dublin City threatened BleeperBike to remove their bikes from Dublin’s streets if they launched as they had planned back then. Now they got the licence and are ready to launch immediately. The bikes are white and are already available in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown. The great thing about the new bikes is that they will allow us to hire bikes in and to areas that are currently not covered by Dublin Bikes (and that might never be reached by Dublin Bikes). The disadvantage the new bike hire schemes might bring is that Dublin Bikes membership will be less attractive for some and therefore the Dublin Bikes charges might go up when less people subscribe.
For users the big difference is that there is no yearly charge, instead you pay from the first minute of usage after you unlock a bike with an app. Dublin Bikes allow you to use the bike for free for the first 30 minutes as often as you like during the year, but you pay a yearly fee. Bleeperbike also have a 3 Month membership and 12 month membership plan that also gives you the first 30 minutes for free if you don’t want to use the Pay as you Go plan, but these membership plans are a lot more expensive than the Dublin Bikes plan and Dublin Bikes could use that as a justification to increase their charges too.
And another important thing to note: “Stationless” doesn’t really mean completely stationless!! You are not allowed to park and lock the car anywhere, instead, the bike has to be locked to a “recognised public cycle parking space” and these spaces are identified in the BleeperBike app.

Met Eireann are panicked again
Weather happens, no matter if we like it or not. But Met Eireann seems to be panicked easily and then panics the whole population.
Germany has very hot days and there are regularly VERY severe thunderstorms with dramatic lightning, torrential downpours and hailstones. I was there during the week and the newspapers reported from some locations in the northern half of Germany that had up to 150 litres of rain per square meter. With basements flooded, a shopping centre 1.5m under water etc. Serious stuff! But I never heard that there was an orange or red or yellow weather warning. And even if there had been one, it wouldn’t have stopped the weather.
In Ireland it is different, we have a weather warning. Then we panic and then nothing happens. Again and again and again. On Friday, Met Eireann issued a Status Orange weather warning for heavy rain in 16 counties of Ireland, including Dublin. A third of the torrential downpour from Germany (only 50mm) was expected and nothing happened (at least in Dublin.
Is it not time to overhaul and correct this silly weather warning system that we have at the moment? There is nothing wrong in forecasting bad weather but “crying Wolf” all the time and being totally wrong after an exaggerated warning is not helpful to anyone.

Art & The Great Hunger

“Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum” at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, is sending its art collection to Ireland for the first time. The exhibition documents the scale of the famine, the horror of it, how it permeated and changed Ireland and the people that escaped it forever. The museum’s collection, the only one of its kind in the world, constitutes an incomparable direct link to the past of almost 6.5 million Irish and 40 million Irish-American people.

Tall Ships Regatta 2018

The Tall Ships Regatta will be in Dublin from Friday until Monday, but don’t expect anything like the huge and wonderful event that we had here in 2012. Also, and VERY regrettably, the Dublin Port River Fest that was on the bank holiday weekend for years is NOT taking place this year.
You will be able to visit SOME of the 17 ships on Saturday and Sunday, but there is no land-based festival. The smaller ships will be in the Grand Canal Dock and the larger ones are on Sir Rogerson’s Quay. It seems that only the smaller ships can be visited (between 12:00 and 18:00 on Saturday and Sunday).
The ships will be arriving from Liverpool and will leave on Monday at 12:30 to sail to the Golf of Biscay.
If you like looking at Tall Ships, this event has something for you. But I have to be honest and admit that I am disappointed that Dublin City did cancel the Riverfest in 2018.

The Story of the Capital – Exhibition in Dublin City Hall

Áras an Uachtaráin is the residence of the President of Ireland in the middle of Phoenix Park. It started as a modest brick house for the Phoenix Park Chief Ranger in 1751, was then turned into th ‘occasional residence’ for the Lords-Lieutenant and gradually evolved into a huge mansion. After Ireland gained independence it was turned after 1937 into the residence of the Irish president.
Every Saturday a number of public tours take place and admission is free. Tickets will be issued at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day, on a first come, first served basis. Group and/or advance booking is not possible.
The tours will be at 10:15, 11:30, 12:45, 14:00 and 15:15 and take approx. 1 hour.

This is the last weekend of the current exhibition:
The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “FAKE” and it will run from 08 March until 03 June.
The exhibition is looking at everything Fake from fake meat and fake cheese to fake emotions. In both the natural world and human society, faking, mimicking and copying can be a reliable strategy for success, a fake may be just as valuable as the real thing. But what about replicating taste, emotions, chemical signatures, facts and trademarks? When is authenticity essential and when is copying cool?
Some of the most interesting exhibits are:
+ synthHAsizer will let you record your own fake laugh and use sonic filters to remix it from fake to real.
+ Mississippi Swan: Daybew! will create fake music: A new album of songs every fifteen minutes or around 700 unique songs every day. You can trigger the creation of a unique album at any time.
+ Altered historic figures from the Daily Herald show the beginning of fake news
+ There is even a deli where you can buy fake food samples for EUR 2. For example they have fake cheese, fake meat or “Dubliner Red Cheddar” cheese that is neither manufactured in Dublin nor is it Red Cheddar, it is coloured white cheddar manufactured in Cork.

All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. Some of the exhibits need a bit more of an age-appropriate explanation for younger kids than others, but nearly everything can be simplified for kids.
I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Tall Ships Regatta 2018

The Tall Ships Regatta will be in Dublin from Friday until Monday, but don’t expect anything like the huge and wonderful event that we had here in 2012. Also, and VERY regrettably, the Dublin Port River Fest that was on the bank holiday weekend for years is NOT taking place this year.
You will be able to visit SOME of the 17 ships on Saturday and Sunday, but there is no land-based festival. The smaller ships will be in the Grand Canal Dock and the larger ones are on Sir Rogerson’s Quay. It seems that only the smaller ships can be visited (between 12:00 and 18:00 on Saturday and Sunday).
The ships will be arriving from Liverpool and will leave on Monday at 12:30 to sail to the Golf of Biscay.
If you like looking at Tall Ships, this event has something for you. But I have to be honest and admit that I am disappointed that Dublin City did cancel the Riverfest in 2018.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park was for a long time completely neglected, but it is hugely rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 30 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally since 2016, guided tours are provided and this year from April until end of October there will be three tours every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00. Only 20 places are available on each tour and if there is a big event in Phoenix Park the tour will be cancelled.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Women’s Mini Marathon 2018

Since last year, the Women’s Mini Marathon is happening on the Bank Holiday Sunday and not on Bank Holiday Monday anymore.
More than 40,000 women (!!!) will take part again this year and will run, jog or walk the 10km from Start at Fitzwilliam Street Upper to the Finish line at Baggot Street Upper.
The course goes from Fitzwilliam Street to Donnybrook, then towards UCD along Stillorgan Road, it makes a U-Turn near the Radisson St. Helen’s Hotel and then goes back to RTE, down Nutley Lane and then along Merrion Road to the RDS. The final 2km is along Northumberland Road to the Ballsbridge Hotel and then up Pembroke Road to the Finish Line in Baggot Street.
So the course doesn’t come to close to St. Stephen’s Green or Merrion Square this year, which is the second year for this new route and it also goes the other direction than until 2016.
The event is not free, but you can cheer on and support all the women who give their time and money to raise funds for their chosen charity. (Men are not allowed to take part.)

Emerald Isle Sings Festival Chorus and Dublin ensemble Ború are inviting to a unique choral performance at Christ Church Cathedral.
Emerald Isle Sings is a festival choir from the US with members from Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, Texas & Wisconsin. Together they form a festival chorus of over 75 singers and will perform the music of John Leavitt and the world premier of his new choral cantata, Bound For Glory, a collection of American Spirituals.
The chorus will be joined by professional Irish musicians who will perform a selection of Dr. Leavitt’s work including arrangements of The Sally Gardens, The Sound Of Music: Choral Highlights, The Rhythm Of Life and A Celtic Prayer. The concert will conclude with one of Dr. Leavitt’s most successful titles, River In Judea.
Also performing on the night are Dublin choir Ború who will perform a selection of sacred and spiritual music from around the world.

Tall Ships Regatta 2018

The Tall Ships Regatta will be in Dublin from Friday until Monday, but don’t expect anything like the huge and wonderful event that we had here in 2012. Also, and VERY regrettably, the Dublin Port River Fest that was on the bank holiday weekend for years is NOT taking place this year.
You will be able to visit SOME of the 17 ships on Saturday and Sunday, but there is no land-based festival. The smaller ships will be in the Grand Canal Dock and the larger ones are on Sir Rogerson’s Quay. It seems that only the smaller ships can be visited (between 12:00 and 18:00 on Saturday and Sunday).
The ships will be arriving from Liverpool and will leave on Monday at 12:30 to sail to the Golf of Biscay.
If you like looking at Tall Ships, this event has something for you. But I have to be honest and admit that I am disappointed that Dublin City did cancel the Riverfest in 2018.

We once had this brilliant monthly event called “First Wednesday” or then “Free Wednesday”, when on the first Wednesday of the month all state owned Irish heritage sites waived all admission charges for the day. Unfortunately this super popular opportunity to bring culture closer to people in Ireland has been cancelled for nearly all Dublin sites and for other popular sites in other parts of Ireland, which was a very bad decision.
But there is ONE single site left in Dublin that currently offers free admission on the first Wednesday of the month and that is Rathfarnham Castle! Tickets will be limited, so it is strongly recommended to go there early.

Grangegorman Military Cemetery is in Blackhorse Avenue just outside Phoenix Park. It is the largest military cemetery in Ireland. Specific zones were laid out for English, Canadian, New Zealand, and Australian service men. The cemetery’s pedestrian gate is open from 10:00-16:00 seven days a week.

The Cemetery at Arbour Hill is the last resting place of 14 of the leaders of the 1916 Rising. Among those buried there are Pádraig Pearse, James Connolly and Thomas Clarke. This tour every Friday introduce the Cemetery and will also explain the background and the event of the Easter Rising.
Admission is free and no booking necessary. The meeting point is inside the cemetery gates.

Heritage Collections of the Royal College of Surgeons – Talk

The Royal Irish College of Surgeons is one of the oldest educational establishments in Ireland. Its heritage and archival collections contain unique materials, relating to the history of medicine in Ireland and abroad. In addition, these records can be used to paint of portrait of a developing nation over the last 250 years that is not only medical but social, historical and personal.
Archivist Susan Leyden introduces the heritage collections as as a source for historians and explores the surprising insights they can reveal.
