It will be Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) for kids with Dr. Jennifer Cleary, a lover of all things science. She will show wacky experiments and fun science tricks.

Irish engineer, scientist, performer and one of Ireland’s leading space explorers, Dr. Niamh Shaw will be in Arnott’s on 31 March only with crew mate Stargazer Lottie, to tell kids all about the story of space and encourage them to dream big.

In addition there will be interactive workshops from Djeco, Arckit and Tech Will Save Us so that children can design, draw and create and watch their own ideas come to life.

Face painting, arts and crafts will entertain the younger ones as well.

The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “FAKE” and it will run from 08 March until 03 June.

The exhibition is looking at everything Fake from fake meat and fake cheese to fake emotions. In both the natural world and human society, faking, mimicking and copying can be a reliable strategy for success, a fake may be just as valuable as the real thing. But what about replicating taste, emotions, chemical signatures, facts and trademarks? When is authenticity essential and when is copying cool?

Some of the most interesting exhibits are:

+ synthHAsizer will let you record your own fake laugh and use sonic filters to remix it from fake to real.
+ Mississippi Swan: Daybew! will create fake music: A new album of songs every fifteen minutes or around 700 unique songs every day. You can trigger the creation of a unique album at any time.

On 24 March the kids and families of March For Our Lives will bring their protest to the streets of Washington DC and around the USA to demand that their lives and safety become a priority and that steps are taken to end gun violence and mass shootings in schools. The March For Our Lives is being organised by the survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida where on 14 February 2018 a shooting was carried out by a 19 year old former student. 17 students died and 16 got injured.

A solidarity protest is planned in Dublin at the American Embassy in Ballsbridge.

Speakers at the event will include Greg Johnson of Democrats Abroad Ireland and Mary Farley of Moms Demand Action.

The Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers meet in Clontarf on the seafront car park, on Clontarf Road, opposite the Clontarf Bus Depot for a public star-gazing. Members bring along their telescopes and share the wonders of the night-sky with you. Admission is free.

On Saturday at 20:30 is “Earth Hour” and during that hour it is suggested that you turn all lights/electricity off. The purpose of this grassroots initiative is to raise awareness and draw attention to our energy utilisation which is unfortunately still not environmentally-friendly and in some countries (e.g. USA) it is even forbidden to use certain enviromentally-friendly energy sources.

The “light-out” during Earth Hour is a symbolic gesture that ideally would extend to public buildings and office buildings etc. But unfortunately the initiative is not getting much support from official organisations and the government in Ireland. If the same huge effort was made with energy saving initiatives as was made with “greening” the lights that shine at buildings in Ireland and all over the world, it would have a much bigger effect.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The next concert will feature the Ficino Ensemble. They will perform works from Ravel, Garrett Sholdice, Brahms.

This Family Tour is specially designed for children and their guardians, parents and carers to make the works on display in the National Gallery fun and engaging for kids.

The film “Museum Hours” (2013, Dir. Jem Cohen, Duration: 106 mins) will be screened and this will be followed by a discussion led by Alice Butler, writer and co-curator of aemi.

The film synopsis is “A Vienna museum guard befriends a visitor and the two explore their lives, the city and the ways artwork reflects the world.”

An art auction of 80 contemporary artworks will happen in Bagots Hutton and all the funds raised will be donated to a team of doctors and psychologists working with the Syrian people living in the Bajed Kandala camp for displaced persons on the Iraqi border. All have lost their homes, most have lost family members and loved ones and each one has a horrific story to tell and an experience to overcome.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir sings every Sunday from September to June at their “Gig in God’s Gaff”, a Mass in St. Francis Xavier Church at the top of Gardiner Street near the junction with Dorset Street.

The Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, one of the best known gospel choirs in Ireland will give you a chance to experience a mass with a difference. Here, There & Now is an exploration of international stories that celebrate our national diversity.

Ninth Star Youth Theatre is a multi-cultural theatre group that is made up of young people from Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Malawi, Rep of Congo, Albania and Ireland and it was originally formed by people living at the Mosney Reception Centre. It is a collaboration between Ninth Star Youth Theatre, some musicians and the storytellers from Candlelit Tales.

“Irish mythology tells us that we are one of the few cultures without a creation story. Where other countries understand their place in the world by having stories about primal figures, the Irish identify with the land first. We tell stories of the different people who came here and formed our culture in an exchange with this land. Here,There and Now brings this right up to date.”

“Ale, Beer and Brewing in Sixteenth-Century Ireland” by Susan Flavin (Anglia Ruskin University) is a lecture in the Trinity Centre for Early Modern History lecture series.

“Forty Years of Editing: Some Do’s and Some Don’ts, 1978-2018” with Prof Gerald Dawe, Fellow Emeritus at TCD, will be looking back on his career as an editor of poetry and criticism and offering some insights about the editorial process.

Professor Dawe was the founding director of Trinity Oscar Wilde Centre (1998-2015) in the School of English, has published eight collections of poetry and has edited several anthologies of Irish poetry and criticism including Earth Voices Whispering: Irish Poetry of War 1914-1945 (2008) and The Cambridge Companion to Irish Poets (2018). Professor Dawe’s paper will offer a wealth of knowledge about his experiences of editing and writing.

Lovelace Space is a group of makers and they are inviting to an evening of talks about Feminism. The “Feminism Knowledge Share” looks at the huge variety of theory, politics and activism in feminism. Neuroethics is a public talk presented by Dr Judy Illes, University of British Columbia, as part of the Neurohumanities Lecture series 2018. Dr. Judy Illes is a Professor of Neurology and her research focuses on ethical, legal, social, and policy challenges specifically at the intersection of the neurosciences and biomedical ethics.

This includes studies in the areas of functional brain imaging and neurogenetics in basic and clinical research, addiction neuroethics, stem cells and regenerative medicine, neurodevelopmental disorders, and the commercialization of cognitive neuroscience.

Importantly though you won’t get a holiday/Sunday salary and you also have no automatic right to get time in lieu. It’s an odd day in that respect.

Another oddness was recently removed: Pubs and restaurants are allowed to serve alcohol. For that reason you can expect that many pubs will open, but I have heard from some restaurants that will stick to the previous arrangements and will close on Good Friday to give their staff a day off even if they are allowed to operate normally. Some pubs also have declared that they will stick to the old rules voluntarily, but there will be enough venues available for you and importantly, you will NOT have to queue outside any off-licence the night before Good Friday in the fear that Good Friday might be dry. ;-) Another quirk of Ireland gone.

Dublinia, Dublin’s Viking Museum, is running a Viking Fest over the Easter weekend. It starts on Friday and runs until Monday. There will be a number of events in Dublinia and admission tickets are required for that, but some events will be outside where no tickets and no booking is necessary. An audio visual and theatrical performance at the Wood Quay amphitheatre is also free, but all tickets are gone already.

So the “no ticket + no booking” events are:

+ Swords, shields, spears, bows axes and the skills and tactics of Viking weaponry will be on display in the Dublinia courtyard. Viking coin minting will also be demonstrated as well as Viking crafts like tablet weaving. Re-enactors will demonstrate how to use a quern-stone and how to play some Viking games.
+ Two Viking longships will be moored at Wood Quay on the Liffey and a full size longship will be on the ground on Wine Tavern Street with lots of Viking Warriors to tell you all about the ship and life for them as it would have been a thousand years ago.

Dublin City Hall has a museum/exhibition in the basement, called “The Story of the Capital”, it is an exhibition about Dublin’s History and you should definitely check it out at some stage.

To celebrate the Easter Rising Anniversary, admission to that exhibititon was free in 2016, but lucky for us, Dublin City decided to also waive the admission charge for 2018.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings every day of the week. Currently there is at least one free tour every day. Check their website for details. Some special events will be listed separately.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

Cornucopia Café & Restaurant host live music three evenings a week (Thurs, Fri and Sat). The restaurant is a Wholefood & Vegetarian Restaurant and is open until 22:15.

The Good Friday Gig in the Harbour Bar is with Gin ‘N Juice, who will play “Classic Hip Hop, Good Times”.

The Stillorgan Orchard has live music every Friday and Saturday. Many of the performers are established and very good bands. The upcoming gigs are detailed on the website below. Admission is always free.

A rockabilly gig with Skinny Elvis will take place in the Leeson Lounge.

The Girl Talk will play a gig at the SOMA Gig night on the first pub-open Good Friday in Ireland.

SOMA was originally a series of house parties in Dublin hosting bands and DJs. The SOMA clubnight in Whelan’s carry on the house party tradition, showcasing Dublins best up and coming bands followed by SOMA DJs.
