Hi all!
Five Lamps Arts Festival and St. Patrick’s Day Festival and plenty events in between. That’s what is in the Dublin Event Guide this week. I am late again (13:30) and there are still some events missing, but I better send it to you now so that you get at least SOME use. As it looks, though, the snow will be gone soon and I’d say normality will return with plenty of bread supplies in all shops from early next week. :-D
[quads id=1]
Thanks for the donations last week, with your tremendous help, we got the bill down to a remaining EUR 150. That’s a good achievement. So only 150 needed before the end of the month to cover the bills. If you have a few Euro, please help! I am suggesting a very fair EUR 12 for the year, that’s just 23 cent per Dublin Event Guide Edition or less than 3 pints for the whole year! That’s not much if you think about how much value the Dublin Event Guide brings you every week! ;-) Higher and lower donations are also appreciated! Every Euro counts!
If you are a great and helpful person, you can help via PayPal here or if you don’t like PayPal too much and prefer to use your credit card go to GoFundMe here. THANK YOU!!
And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!
++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.
You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 74,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week’s Feel Good Slot quote is by Canadian former professional ice hockey player and head coach Wayne Gretsky
“You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.” – Wayne Gretsky
What do you think, did he refer to ice hockey shots or maybe is “shots you don’t take” a metaphor for more in life?

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Eleonora P, Thomas B, Karen K, Brendan M, Eric O’F, Gale G and Daniel LG were so great to help with a donation. Thanks!! You and all the other donors throughout the year are keeping the Dublin Event Guide alive! Without you, there would be no Dublin Event Guide!!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend the Five Lamps Arts Festival will take place and the Fusion Sundays World Culture Market is on Sunday (not in the Food Co-op, but instead in the Green Door Market). Don’t forget that it is Mother’s Day on Sunday and also remember that next weekend is St. Patrick’s Day!

Release Your Voice – Singing Workshop – Ticket Competition
Sunday 25 March – 11:00-17:30 The Lab, Foley Street, Dublin 1
Professional Singer and Vocal Coach Joan Shields is running a full day workshop in singing techniques entitled “Release Your Voice”. This highly enjoyable and intensive workshop will show you how to get the most out of your voice. It is suitable for all styles of music from Popular to Operatic, Jazz, Traditional, Musical Theatre etc. and all levels of singer from beginner/non-singer to professional. It will also benefit public speakers and actors in their projection and delivery.
You will learn how to develop and gain control over your voice; extend your pitch -range, improve your timbre, intonation and power; sing in a healthy way for your voice; be a more versatile and expressive singer; communicate/interpret a song and perform with confidence. And you will have the opportunity to work individually with Joan on the song of your choice.
The fee for the full day of training is a very affordable EUR 60 and if you tell Joan at the time of booking that you found out about the course in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), you will even only pay EUR 55. – Book your place via 086-3844527 or via freeyourvoice@outlook.com now!
And if you enter this competition, then one person will even get the ticket for free! But don’t wait until the competition is decided. Instead just go ahead and book with Joan and if you are the lucky winner and you have booked already, you will get your money back. The reason why I am suggesting to book NOW is because there are limited places available on the course and this course is super popular!
To enter the competition send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with VOICE18 in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Tuesday 20 March.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

Central Bank may stop printing Euro notes
The Central Bank has announced that they might stop printing Euro notes soon in their facility in Sandyford. The people who do this at the moment will be redployed. A final decision has not been made yet, but when you think about it, it doesn’t make sense at all for a small country to print the same notes as every other country prints. If it was a brochure or a leaflet or catalogue, you would probably look for the most cost effective place to get it printed and with all the security requirements in the relatively complicated printing process, this is most likely one of the bigger countries.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Humans of Dublin by Peter Varga
08 January – 31 March
dlr LexIcon Library, Haigh Terrace, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin
An exhibition of 60 photos by Peter Varga from his “Humans of Dublin” series will be on show in dlr LexIcon from 08 January – 31 March 2018.
“Peter Varga was working in a Dublin café when he decided to follow his passion and dedicate himself to photography. Inspired by the success of the Humans of New York project, he began to walk the streets of Dublin interviewing and photographing those he met along the way. What he uncovered were the powerful stories that hide in plain sight as we rush about our busy lives, too busy to notice. So began the social media phenomenon that is Humans of Dublin whose social media pages have over 175,000 followers. There are tales of inspiration and joy and those of heartbreak and loss, all of human life is present in this remarkable portrait of a diverse and vibrant city.”

Five Lamps Arts Festival 2018
09:00, Sat 10 Mar
Dublin (various locations)
The Five Lamps Arts Festival is taking place this weekend. It already started on Wednesday, but the main days of the festival are this Saturday and Sunday and all events are listed on the website.
For Saturday you find them here www.fivelampsarts.ie/new/10th-march-saturday/ and the Sunday events are all listed on this page www.fivelampsarts.ie/new/11th-march-sunday/
I will also list a number of the events individually in this Dublin Event Guide to draw your attention to them, but please be aware that the only full list is on the website above. Most events are free! The name of the festival comes from a street lamp on a junction that link five (!!) roads (Portland Row, North Strand Road, Seville Place, Amiens Street and Killarney Street) in the North Strand area, which is also the main area of the festival. The street lamp at that junction has 5 lanterns.

FAKE – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 10 Mar
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “FAKE” and it will run from 08 March until 03 June. Because the planned launch didn’t happen last week because of the snow, I STILL don’t know what the exhibition is about apart from the fact that it is about all thing “Fake”. The re-scheduled launch will be on Thursday and I should know more then next week.
The website below lists all exhibits and provides some explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details, BUT the website is extremely slow and clumsy to use, so be prepared.
All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow.
I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Five Lamps Arts Festival 2018
09:00, Sun 11 Mar

Today is Mother’s Day in Ireland and UK, but not in the rest of the world (apart from Nigeria :-) ). In MOST countries Mother’s Day is on the 2nd Sunday in May, which is the 13 May this year.
If you are from another country where Mother’s Day is NOT today, you could ring your mother anyway, if she is still with us. I am sure she would appreciate two “Happy Mother’s Day” calls. :-)

FAKE – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 11 Mar

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

The Duke, 8 Duke Street, Dublin 2
The Dublin Sketchers is group of sketching enthusiasts that meet every Sunday at 14:00 to sketch in varying places in Dublin and afterwards at 16:00 continue the meet up with drinks and a chat.

The Best Laid Plans… Year of the Dog in China 1958 – Talk
18:30 – 20:00, Tue 13 Mar
Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2
This is a lecture presented by Dr Jackson organised by the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies as part of the Dublin Chinese New Year Festival.
“Sixty years ago, in the Year of the Dog 1958, China launched the Second Five Year Plan with the ambition of equalling Britain’s industrial output, doubling steel production and applying industrial approaches to agriculture. Favourable weather produced a good harvest that summer, but with labourers diverted to back-yard steel furnaces, crops were left to rot in the fields or devoured by pests. This marked the beginning of the largest famine in human history. In this lecture, Dr Jackson will examine the origins and consequences of this most ambitious project.”
Admission is free, but booking is required via the website below. The “sales” of tickets seems to have come to an end (and it doesn’t say SOLD OUT). So if you are REALLY interested, I would still risk going to the venue. There is a good chance that you will be allowed in.

The International Bar, 23 Wicklow Street, Dublin 2
Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.
Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.
Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

St. Patrick’s Festival
09:00, Fri 16 Mar
Dublin (various locations)
This year’s St. Patrick’s Festival will run from Thurs 15 March until Monday 19 March and because St. Patrick’s Day is on a Saturday, we will get the Monday as a bank holiday.
All events can be found on www.stpatricksfestival.ie/events but I can tell you that on Thursday and Friday, you will find it difficult to find free festival events. On Saturday the St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place and on Sunday is the Big Day Out at Merrion Square. It seems that there will not be a outdoor Ceili Moore (Big Irish Dancing event) this year.
I will tell you more about the Saturday and Sunday events in next week’s Dublin Event Guide and on the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. TV3 Rebranding – Now on hold
I am definitely not a branding expert and while I am currently trying to learn a little more about the intricacies of branding, I will still guess and interpret my way through this This is Odd piece. ;-) It is about TV3s rebranding.
TV3 was bought in July 2015 by Virgin Media for EUR 80mio. Before that TV3 started in 2008 and was a struggling commercial competitor to RTE’s tax-payer-funded semi-state TV empire. In 2014, TV3 had losses of 7mio and in 2015 of 17mio, so things could have been better for them, but Virgin Media’s buyout of the TV station changed the picture.
Virgin Media has an even more illustrious past: There were originally NTL and Telewest in the UK. They merged and then bought Virgin Mobile UK. The three companies then signed a deal with Richard Branson that gave them the right to use Branson’s brand “Virgin”. So Branson doesn’t own any part of the company, but gets money for his name (a license deal) but when the Cable TV company UPC in Ireland became Virgin Media, Richard Branson was paraded around like he was the boss. Virgin Media, however is owned by Liberty Global, a huge American TV and telecommunications company. UPC also was owned by Liberty Global, hence the deal to merge the Irish UPC into the Virgin Media brand. So Virgin Media provides Telecommunications services, Cable TV and then bought TV3 to add TV services to their Irish portfolio. In 2015 TV3 bought the UTV TV channel, which was created only a very small number of years before and had failed miserably. (I could make it more complicated by explaining how TV3 had licensed ITV content, but lost that to UTV, when UTV’s channel launched in Ireland. ironic that it all came back to TV3 when TV3 bought UTV. But I don’t want to make it tooo difficult to follow. :-) )
That bought UTV channel was renamed into “Be3” in January 2017 to create the three stations TV3, 3e and Be3. A somewhat odd and inconsistent branding mess, one could say and Virgin Media wanted to sort it out by rebranding all of them to VM1, VM2 and VM3. In autumn of 2018 all the new names were meant to be adopted. But this week (08 March) TV3 declared that a rebranding was not the highest priority right now.
The new mother company and the available money and TV3s new confidence meant that TV3 successfully won broadcasting rights to all Six Nations Rugby Games from 2018-2021 in addition they still have broadcasting rights for UEFA Champions League and a number of other football tournaments. And then there are the drama series that TV3 has access to.
All these successes are linked to TV3 and it took a good bit of an effort to create the brand link of series and sports events with TV3. And if everything got renamed (probably for a high cost) now the branding would have to be created from scratch.
So does it make sense or does it not make sense to postpone the rebranding? I think it probably makes sense, but remember that I said that I am no expert! ;-)
