Hi all!

Another exodus from Dublin this weekend! For Oxegen and even more so for the Electric Picnic, it seems that Dublin is being emptied out of people. I very much “feel” that because of all the “Out of Office” mails I get in reply to sending the Event Guide this morning. :-) I hope you all have a nice weekend in Stradbally and hopefully it won’t be toooo mucky and muddy.

Last weekend we were really lucky at the Festival of World Cultures in Dun Laoghaire. Sure, you have to be prepared for rain and it is an odd year when it doesn’t rain at some stage, but on Saturday there were only two showers during the 8 hours I was there and on Sunday there were a few sprinkles and one heavy shower, but it all cleared up again and we even had blue skies for part of both days.

As every year, the festival was again brilliant. A lot of things were even better organised than in previous years. The music was good, but mixed and for some reason (I can guess why!) the top act is never as good as the second best act on the main stage on Newtownsmith Green. There were a few other odd bits and you will read some further down (you can guess where! ;-) ).

After promoting the Festival like mad out of conviction, I tried to spread the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) on Sunday and had some fliers (www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf) printed and handed them out. But it all ended badly when I was told that I have to stop handing out fliers immediately and if I won’t, the police will remove me. Grrrr! Not nice! Yes, I can understand that they don’t want too much litter, but I did check and not a single one of my little fliers was dropped on the ground. Maybe I should praise the festival less as a consequence? ;-)

Remember that I asked you last week to let more people know about the Event Guide, but the response was a little disappointing, so I thought I will spend an hour or two to do the work myself on Sunday, but that obviously didn’t go well. Some of you are really great and have printed fliers and have distributed them and are hanging the tear-off posters up and I really appreciate it. For all others let me put it like this: With still less than 5000 people we are FAR from the limits for this weekly free newsletter. We should be able to reach thousands more! – I am prepared to put in a LOT of work, but without you, it won’t work. If we reach a point when the net growth of the Dublin Event Guide Community is stopped (i.e. negative subscriber equity :-P) the question will have to be asked if the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) should continue. If YOU are not enough excited about this newsletter that you get all your friends to subscribe, maybe I am not doing the right thing?

To find out a little more of what you like and what you don’t like, I will ask you to take part in a survey. Next Tuesday or Wednesday I will send you a separate mail with a link to a questionnaire and I would really appreciate if as many of you as possible could help me out and fill it in!

Please spread the word: www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_mini_flyers.pdf
www.perfectresults.info/event_guide_tear_off_poster.pdf

And if you need a bit of a lift today or this weekend, watch this amazing video of a father’s love for his son. I find it just incredible what people are able to achieve if they believe in it…and especially if they do it out of love. www.youtube.com/watch?v=flRvsO8m_KI

______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend and week will not be too busy. Many of you will be at the Electric Picnic anyway, but it seems as if all other events heard about the Electric Picnic and said that they don’t want to take place this weekend? :-) I will probably pick Fringe Festival event to go to over the weekend. During the week, the Alchemist Café looks interesting. There are a good few other events, but nothing really outstanding so have a look for yourself. ;-)

______Competition______________

FITT BOOTCAMP MEMBERSHIP
A few weeks ago I wrote about Cathy Albanese’s search for an indoor venue for her FITT Bootcamp for the winter and asked all of you if you could help Cathy. Cathy didn’t just get what she was looking for, but even got more! (Interesting what you can achieve if 4700 people conspire together for a common goal.). Cathy now has not one, but two venues and as a Thank You to all of you, she is offering some great prices for a competition. There will be two lucky winners and the winners will have to be female because the FITT Bootcamp is only for women, but if you are male you certainly are allowed to enter the competition if you want to surprise a woman in your life in case you win. ;-)
One winning reader will get a free membership (3 months valued at EUR 190) for the IT Blanchardstown indoor bootcamp classes (Monday & Wednesday @ 18:00) and another reader will get a free membership (3 months valued at EUR 190) for the Corduff Sports Centre Classes (Monday & Thursday @ 20:00).
Details for the FITT Bootcamp (for ladies only) can be found at www.fittpt.com. And to win one of the prices you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with FITT in the subject line and in the body of the mail you have to tell me what “FITT” stands for. In addition I need your name and your mobile phone number in the body of the mail and finally, please tell me if you have a preference for IT Blanchardstown or for Corduff or if either of the two is ok with you. The mail has to be with my by 15:00 on Mon 07 Sept. www.fittpt.com

MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM – TICKET COMPETITION
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by William Shakespeare and directed by Jane Mulcahy wwas performed by the Sycamore Street Theatre Company in the “Back Loft” of the “La Cathedral Studios” in 7-11 St. Augustine Street and the winner of the pair of tickets was Margaret Gallery. Congratulations!

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

MOUNTAIN MOVING MINDSET – Free TELESEMINAR
Frederique Murphy, a friend of mine, is a Coach and Business Consultant and she is offering a teleseminar that consists of five 1-hour long sessions between 08 September and the beginning of November. The teleseminar is free for everyone if you register following the link below and it is targeting mainly Business Owners and Entrepreneurs. BREAKTHROUGH TO SUCCESS – Free PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
The free 3-day seminar “Breakthrough to Success” by Christopher Howard is back in town from 11-13 Sept. I have done that seminar before and will even volunteer there this time. If there is anything in your life that needs improvement (career, relationships, health, etc.) and if you are searching for a way to make big improvement, this seminar could help you on your way. It is a promotional seminar where you are told about the non-free other seminars by Chris Howard, but Breakthrough to Success goes on for 3 days (yes, you should definitely take the Friday off if you want to benefit from it!) and you will learn a LOT. If you want to know more or if you are going send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject BTS. I checked and registration will definitely still be possible today and tomorrow before the registration doors close for this course. www.breakthroughtosuccess.eu/?af=CLA1035324 (Disclaimer: If you register and are going and if many of you do that, my name could be entered into a competition and I could win a course. If you sign up for a non-free course and after you have done it, I could – under certain circumstances – get a fee reduction if I book other courses with them.)

D4STORES
Did you hear about the discount supermarket in a hotel? Some developers have to grasp every straw they can get…and others are already bankrupt! Sean Dunne who owns the D4 Hotels in Ballsbridge had planned to knock them down and to build a massive high-rise development on the site. His plans were rejected and so the hotel was re-opened as a big cheap-and-cheerful “Bed & NO Breakfast”. But money is tighter than tight and now he has opened a discount super market in the hotel (in the space the former business centre was in). Slight problem, though: A supermarket in that place might not be in line with planning laws: www.businessworld.ie/livenews.htm?a=2471886 I was in the supermarket and even Spar and Centra markets are “cosy” in comparison to this anodyne and sterile specimen of a shop. I am not impressed. Oh, and it is not very “discounty” either!

DUBLINBIKES
Despite my initial registration problems, all went well and I received my “Long Term Rental” card yesterday. If you want to be able to use the bikes from the beginning, you should register soon. From your registration it takes up to two weeks until you receive your card and the scheme will start on 13 Sept. www.dublinbikes.ie

MISSING DOG NEAR CHRISTCHURCH – HELP NEEDED
Claire Boyles, one of my “Twitter friends” (www.twitter.com/ClaireBoyles) has a little dog called Sasha. It is a Brittany Spaniel and unfortunately the dog ran away on Wednesday evening and is missing since. Sasha was last seen in the Christchurch area and if you see the dog, please grab her and let Claire or myself know? Here is a picture: pix.ie/claireboyles/1119305/in/album/348989

HOPE FOUNDATION – PARTICIPANTS NEEDED
Sara C asked me if I could include this information: The Hope Foundation is a registered Irish charity set up in 1999 to help restore basic human rights to the street children of Kolkata (Calcutta) and over the coming months the Hope Foundation will be running 2 events in Dublin and outskirts:
1. HOPE National 24-Hour Fast on Fri 25 Sept. – 25 Sept is also “Give it a swirl day” (National Volunteer Day). For a t-shirt and sponsorship card contact HOPE on 021-4292990 or you can register online www.hopefoundation.ie/component/jforms/4/130
2. HOPE Adventure Race 2009: On 19 Sept in Avon Ti, Co Wicklow, a Triathlon.like adventure race will take place. It has three disciplines: 1.5 km in a kayak, 5 km run and 20 km cycle. Each participant is asked to raise money by getting sponsored. Register here www.hopefoundation.ie/component/jforms/3/126. Each participant needs to raise EUR 350 and all money will go to funding a Hope Foundation project in Calcutta.

POVERTY REQUIEM – CALLING ALL SINGERS TO TAKE PART
Cathy McEvoy, the Director of the Ballymun Gospel Choir and leader of The Gospel Project is looking for people that want to take part in a massive choral performance for UN World Poverty Day? Cathy is, supported by www.Sli-Eile.com (the Jesuit Centre for Young Adults) looking for all singers (experienced or otherwise – ability to read music is not essential) who can attend some rehearsals and who will join the Poverty Requiem on 17 Oct 2009.
Rehearsals will be on Sun 04 Oct (12:30-15:30) for Part 1, Thur 08 Oct (19:30-21:30) for Part 2, Sat 10 Oct (14:00-17:00) for Part 3 and Thur 15 Oct (19:30-21:30) for Part 4. (Location for the rehearsals is still to be determined.) If you can only attend some rehearsals but not all, you can participate in that part of the performance that you have rehearsed. Please download score and/or lyrics in advance from www.associatief.nl/poverty-requiem. Final rehearsal and performance will be on Sat 17 Oct in St. Ann’s Church, Dawson Street.
Check www.associatief.nl/poverty-requiem about the background of the Poverty Requiem and you can listen to it there as well.
For further info and to register your interest to participate contact Cathy McEvoy (085-1127306 or e-mail: ballymungospel@sli-eile.com) before 11 Sept 2009.

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. If you are one of the courageous people who has recently taken the risk and has started a company and if you could do with spreading the word, I am happy to help you! My contribution will be to let the 4600+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide – not a demanding task, I would think. :-) (Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. If you are established and you want to reach the readers of this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will be happy to discuss the (very affordable) advertisement options with you. :-) )

CARDOCK – LOOKING AFTER ALL YOUR CAR REPAIR NEEDS
Gar Whelan from CarDock informed me that he and his team have recently opened a brand new car service centre where the word SERVICE is written in capitals. It really sounds good and if your car needs a bit of looking after, you should talk to Gar. CarDock is a new innovative car servicing centre that has just opened in the city centre on Lombard Street (near Pearse Street station). They have a very slick clean garage and are fully equipped with latest computer diagnostics to properly fix all types of cars. In many cases it is even possible that they collect your car if you work in D1 or D2. That should simplify the car repair procedure further. Check CarDock out on www.cardock.ie where they give you a good overview of the services they provide and if you mention that you heard of them in the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, they will give a 5% discount! A new and upcoming place AND they are members of the Dublin Event Guide Community, so hopefully they will do well.

If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

FRINGE FESTIVAL
The 15th Dublin Fringe Festival is starting today and will continue until 20 Sept. The 2 weeks are packed with events and while most of them are not free, there are a few free events hidden in the long list of events. If you hear the name “Absolut Fringe Fest” it refers to the main sponsor, which is Absolut Vodka and if you are a Fringe Fest fan you can check the website for all events www.fringefest.com or you might find the programme book (more than 120 pages!). A great book, but unfortunately, ignoring environmental concerns, it is printed on heavy glossy paper, which in my opinion is really not necessary.
There is no easy list to find the free events, so you have to trawl through the list of 0-10 Euro events to find the free ones. I had planned to do that for you, but I won’t be able to do it this week. Instead you will have to check it yourself. But I WILL list a few events below and you will see that “fringe” means that the art/installations are a little bit whacky or weird or strange in some cases. So the Fringe Festival is definitely “different”. ;-)

THE READERS – FRINGE FESTIVAL
On Sat 12 Sept from 14:30 (53 mins) at St. Patrick’s Park (near Christ Church): “Join us and thousands of others around the world who have already come together for this impromptu travelling dancefloor. St. Patrick’s Park will be transformed by an ocean of people participating in what David Rolland describes as “collective choreography”. On arrival, each audience member receives a booklet with written instructions of what to do and when: don’t worry, you won’t be leaping and twirling, the most difficult thing to do is a “subtle swaying of the hips”. The minute gestures we come across in everyday life turn into dance moves, quickly making way for an atmosphere of amusement and fun. This event is free. No ticket is required.” dublinfringefest.ticketsolve.com/shows/8527845/events

MIND THE GAP – FRINGE FESTIVAL
Mind The Gap is a collaborative public art project initiated by Michelle Browne to work with artists, designers, architects and planners to look at open spaces in the city and consider new uses for them. So, it is an event with a lot of subevents. ;-) Let me quote the explanation from the Mind the Gap team: “Over the course of two months the group have explored areas across Dublin city considering how we can re-imagine our civic society. Throughout Absolut Fringe we will present a range of interventions that will inform and delight. The project is based at thisisnotashop on Benburb Street Dublin 7 where you can get information and contribute to our exhibition of ideas for the city.
# 05 Sept at 16:30: Utopian Bus Tour – A guided tour through Dublin with a difference. Drawing on unrealised proposals for the city and imagining new uses for vacant spaces, the Utopian Bus Tour will guide you through an alternative vision for the city. Leaves from Smithfield Square.
# 12+19 Sept at 08:00-11:00 Don’t Quote Me – Projected on the outside of the iconic Screen cinema, Mind The Gap looks to the silver screen to investigate Dublin’s current dilemmas. The city, planning, corruption, and the fall of a nation are explored through the history of cinema.
# 07+12 Sept: Fare Play? – Taking off in a taxi from Foster Place, Mind The Gap will offer you a chance to learn about NAMA while visiting the sites of the nation’s current big question. Informed taxi drivers will explain the workings of NAMA and show you where it will all happen. Various times, limited space, booking essential. Email for details.
# 11+18 Sept at 18:30: Operetta – A lone performer looks out over the city and sings a lament to its citizens. Mind The Gap presents a solo operatic performance on
Foster Place of arias that highlight the current plight of the city and its uncertain future.
# 19 Sept at 12:00-15:00: Flower Show – Following from the tradition of competitive window box competitions in the Smithfield area, Mind The Gap offer you the chance to come to Smithfield Plaza and design your own flower box display to be adjudicated
by Lord Ross of Birr Castle, Father to Lord Oxmantown. Take this opportunity to bring plant life to the plaza.
# 20 Sept at 15:00: The Big Freeze – Goethe famously said “architecture is frozen music.” Taking inspiration from the architecture of Smithfield Plaza, a brass band will perform The Ride of The Valkyries by Wagner. This collaborative performance highlights the peaks and troughs of Smithfield Square as a public space.
# Ongoing event/installation:  Public Seating – Mind the Gap will provide alternative public seating in the city for visitors and commuters over the course of
Absolut Fringe. Seating will be provided on Aungier Street, Hawkins Street and other city centre locations
# Ongoing event/installation:  Sunken Site – Hammond Lane – A series of visual proposals will be presented for an unused site on Hammond Lane and Church
Street. A collection of proposals taken from an open call from designers and architects
explore the possibilities of the disused spaces in the city.
# Ongoing event/installation:  Thisisnotashop – The hub of the Mind The Gap operation, the gallery will host an exhibition of ideas for the city. Inspired by the urban myth that Santiago Calatrava designed the James Joyce bridge on the back of a napkin, we invite you, the viewer, to present your ideas for the city of an ever-expanding array of napkins. The gallery will also host The Smithfield Archive presenting the history of the area and unrealised proposals for its regeneration.
A complete list of all events AND some possible surprise events will be listed here: www.Mindthegapdublincity.blogspot.com

YOGA – DARTMOUTH SQUARE
A free Yoga class is taking at Dartmouth Square in Ranelagh, D6 on Sat 05 Sept from 11:00-12:30. www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=131446497202

EDDIE O’SULLIVAN – BOOK SIGNING

HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD PLAZA
Yes, it is that time of the month again: Every first Sunday of the month, the horse traders from Dublin and surrounding areas come together and sell and buy horses on Smithfield Plaza. This tradition is in place for many many years and after the modernisation of Smithfield Plaza, Dublin City tried to move the market to another location. This has not been successful yet and consequently the horse market is still a monthly feature in the City Centre. It starts relatively early in the morning and goes on until all traders have left, which is around 13:00. If you want to experience this somewhat anachronistic event, you should consider coming relatively early. I would recommend around 09:00-10:00 experience it at its peak. Especially all the photographers among you should find plenty of four-legged models. And if you did take some nice pictures, maybe you can share them with all by letting me know the link to your online photo album. A search on Google brought me to this website: www.flickr.com/photos/deadlyphoto/sets/72157605373424018 Have a look at the pictures, it is a different world!! …and definitely not what you would expect in the centre of a European capital. ;-)
A few months ago, a concerned reader was surprised that I mentioned this event last month because regularly there are question marks and as well issues about the proper treatment of the horses. I do share the concerns about the welfare of the animals and I do know that ISPCA representatives are supervising the horse market. In addition I am not suggesting that you buy a horse there or that you support the horse traders in any inappropriate acts, I am only reporting that this event is taking place and that it might interest some of you to watch the trading or the horses. The market is going ahead with or without spectators, for this reason I don’t think watching the activities condones any bad treatment of animals, but please decide for yourself!
Guys, if you take pictures there, please send me a link!!

______This is odd!!______________

FESTIVAL OF WORLD CULTURES?
This week I could tell you a number of This is Odd! stories. Two full days in Dun Laoghaire provided some food. ;-) There is the one about the German steak stand that does amazing business on the Saturday and comes back on the Sunday to show its appreciation for all the great business with changed price signs: EUR 0.50 more for the same steak. Not impressive! These Germans! Next they will throw towels on the lawn at Newtownsmith Green. LOL
Or the one about me being threatened with the police for letting people know about the Dublin Event Guide (see introduction). Strangely I got a whole pile of commercial fliers from other people.
Or the one about the Chinese Lantern ceremony at the festival during which “300 lanterns will be released into the night sky”. More than 1000 people were there to see the ceremony and to share the magical moment. …only to find out that the Chinese Lanterns they had would never fly. These are the flying ones www.shrubs.co.uk/firefly-chinese-lanterns-10-pack-15068-p.asp and incidentally that exact picture from the website was used in the Festival brochure. The ones used in Dun Laoghaire were these www.chinatown.com.au/shope/viewdetail.asp?id=5784 on a stick.
They are all good stories, but nothing is as good as the one about Coir’s NO to Lisbon campaign (see below).

——————————————————–

COIR NO TO LISBON CAMPAIGN
Coir, a slightly dubious organisation, with clearly rather extreme views were the first to have posters up for the Lisbon Treaty referendum in October. Coir are totally against it and I have no problem with different opinions. The Lisbon Treaty story is a complex thing. As a foreigner in Ireland, I am obviously very much in favour of the EU as a concept. But the questionable democratic approach for the Lisbon Treaty and the limited improvement it brings allows me to appreciate the Yes! AND the No! side. However, no matter what side you are on, if you talk absolute nonsense and print total rubbish on posters, your credibility is gone in a second. Cori claim for example that the minimum salary will drop to EUR 1.84 and they claim that Ireland will loose its independence among many other things. Very odd! The website The Emergency had a look at the arguments and added another few Coir-like arguments:
www.theemergency.ie/site/breaking-news/coir-launches-no-to-lisbon-campaign/

I hope that I didn’t write this Event Guide just for myself, but that a few of you are still in Dublin and the others will get a chance to have a look at it on Monday or Tuesday. Don’t forget the Wellies if you go to the Electric Picnic. (Did you know that even pigs were wellies? www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1025428/Pig-Boots-The-worlds-porker-afraid-mud.html)

Oh and a quick HI to all the nice people I met at last nights “Blogger, Twitterer, Whatever” Meeting. It was great to meet you and have a chat with you ;-)

Have a great weekend,
