Hi all!
More than 200 events today!! :-O Yes, Christmas has started and there are a few other things going on. Have a look, you will find a lot of good stuff. Because I will go on holidays next week, I am not sure yet how the Dublin Event Guide will look next week. Should I send one or should I not? I will decide soon and will let you know on Facebook. Check the Dublin News this week. Some interesting stuff there.
[quads id=1]
The financial situation is getting tricker by the week!!! We are down to EUR 200, but there are only 10 days before the next EUR 240 will be added to that bill. I really really really need your help! PLEASE help if you can!!! You can do so via PayPal here even if you only have a few Euro, everything counts!! I have also added another way for donations if you prefer to use your credit card via GoFundMe here.
And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or New Look or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!
++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.
You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 73,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This weeks Feel Good Slot Quote is from Muhammad Ali:
To be a great champion you must believe you are the best, if not pretend you are. – Muhammad Ali
He was talking about a boxing champion, I guess. But was he? Or does this apply to all other areas as well? To be a great mother/father you also must believe that you are the best and the same goes for anybody in a job or any other aspect of life.
And what is this pretending all about? Well, if you are not the best yet, then you have to behave as if you were the best. What would the best do? How would they approach the problem? Do it like they would and you will do an amazingly good job!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
This week Michael D, Joan S, Melanie B and Ania W were so wonderful to help with a donation! Thanks a lot!! You and all the other donors throughout the year are keeping the Dublin Event Guide alive! Your donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
Christmas is here! Dun Laoghaire is leading the pack with their Christmas Market and they even have a fireworks display! How is Dublin keeping up with that? NOT at all! No Fireworks, not even a Christmas Market! :-O Instead some keep-people-away parade shenanigans going on for the Christmas Light Switch-on on Sunday. Go to Dun Laoghaire!!! It won’t be amazing, but better than nothing.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

Don’t feed wild animals! Or maybe do?
I have a few people’s Facebook account tagged so that their messages always are shown first when I look at my Facebook Newsfeed (“See First!”) and this is the same as I suggest to Dublin Event Guide readers if they want to see the Dublin Event Guide posts without missing a single one of them. Darragh Doyle the great person, friend, social media expert, event and event marketing specialist and super-popular online personality is my “See first” choice.
On Friday Darragh was re-posting a Twitter Status by the Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) on Facebook (twitter.com/Irishwildlife/status/931503287291006977). That status was picture, created by the UK-based Wildlife hospital “Tiggywinkles” and it showed two birds and said “Please remember to put out food and water for wildlife this winter” and it continued explaining that “Seeds, suet and fat balls will help lots of birds whilst mammals, such as hedgehogs and foxes, will eat tinned dog food and meaty cat biscuits.”
I was very surprised seeing that message from Tiggywinkles and the IWT, because I remember very well growing up in Germany with the message “Do NOT feed wild animals in winter UNLESS there is a long period of frost or a closed snow cover!” and the idea behind that was that wild animals are and should be able to feed themselves without our help, but if we help them too much, they either get lazy or even completely lose the ability to feed themselves without us, which obviously is totally counterproductive.
I did a quick search on Google to see if this is still the advise and it indeed is in Germany and Switzerland. Not as strict as it once was, it seems, but the advise is still that feeding of WILD animals should not be required. An interesting article that I found even suggested that without the natural selection that a food shortage might cause in Winter, the wild animals as a whole will be harmed because animals that nature didn’t think should make it (and pass on their genes) will survive.
Surprising that the IWT and wildlife hospital in the UK have SUCH a different understanding of what wild animals need/should have. :-O
I replied to Darragh’s post with my recollection of the advise given in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and he replied “That IS interesting. Opener for this weekend’s Event Guide for sure!” I hadn’t thought of it originally, but hey, I don’t want to disappoint him. :-) So there you go! :-)

Holidays vs Dublin Event Guide
If you are a Dublin Event Guide reader for a while, you will know that normally I am not letting holidays or other things stop me from compiling and sending the weekly e-mail magazine to all 24,000 subscribers. Usually I plan holidays around the Friday/Saturday deadline and also work while on holidays on the Event Guide to get it to you. 544 weeks now without a single interruption!
But depending how things go there will be SOME reduced service or maybe even no service from me in the next two weeks. From 23 November I will be away and it is the first time since I started the Dublin Event Guide that it will affect TWO weekends. I will try to send you a shortened version of the Dublin Event Guide but if I don’t find the time (or have too much fun on holidays) it is also possible that I will not compile one or both editions. Keep an eye out for updates on www.fb.com/DublinEventGuide

By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Thanks!
|
Say NO to Adblockers!
I use the Internet all the time and know how annoying advertisment can be. But I also spend close to 35 hours every week on this Dublin Event Guide where getting donations is hard work and where it would be sooooo much easier if you just clicked on the links in this Dublin Event Guide when you buy products or services. You are buying anyway and it doesn’t cost you any extra, so it would be cool to help the Dublin Event Guide.
BUT this plan ONLY work if you don’t use adblockers when you look at the Dublin Event Guide.
So, please, give ads a chance HERE. Free services are NEVER free, but they are ad funded. And if you don’t help funding them then soon they won’t be free anymore.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Dublin Library of Things
12:00 – 16:00, Sat 18 Nov
Dublin Food Co-op, 12 Newmarket Square, Dublin 8
Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.
A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.
The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (www.weshare.ie/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.
The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. If you have any useful items in good working order that you would like to loan or donate to the library of things, or have other suggestions or questions for us, contact them at dublinlibraryofthings@gmail.com. Volunteers are also needed to man the library.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 18 Nov
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and it will run from 12 October until 11 January. The exhibition looks at doomsday and emergency scenarios. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)
Exhibits are for example + 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017 + a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations + Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world + Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster) + a selection of Manuals for Civilisation The website below lists all exhibits and provides their explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.
There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.
All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.
I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Pre-Aérokorda Flash-Mob
13:00 – 14:00, Sat 18 Nov
Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Aérokorda is a folk band from Belgium that plays energetic folk music with Celtic and Slavic influences.
A Flashmob is announced before their gig on Saturday evening. That Flash Mob will probably involve some Folk Dancing, because it is organised by Bal Folk Dublin. But I am not sure how the busy Meeting House Square where on Saturdays the Temple Bar Food Market takes place can serve as a suitable venue for a Flashmob. Either way, admission is free.

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 19 Nov

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
12:00, Sun 19 Nov
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally since last year, guided tours are provided with four tours on Friday and Sunday over the Summer and a reduced schedule in the winter. From 01 October until March 2018, the only tour is on Sundays from 12:00 and 20 places are available on that tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 19 Nov
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Christmas Light Switch-on 2017
17:30, Sun 19 Nov
Dublin (various locations)
Last year the Christmas Light Switch-on in Grafton Street was a disaster when TOO many people arrived for the event and it was so bad that it had to be cancelled. SO this year things had to be changed dramatically. Instead of having a Switch On ceremony in Grafton Street and another one in O’Connell Street, all will happen in the same day, this Sunday.
Two processions will go through the streets and you are asked to line the streets instead of to assemble in one place. The two processions will start at 17:30 and the first route one will go from + Grafton Street to College Green to Westmoreland Street to O’Connell Bridge to O’Connell Street the second route will go from + Mary Street to Henry Street to Moore Street to Parnell Street to O’Connell Street.
The idea is that the lights will be switched on at SOME stage during the parade. The consequence of this new approach seems to be that there are no gigs with choirs and sometimes even pop performers anymore.
If you go to the Christmas Light Switch-on Event, let me know what you will think about this year’s way of doing it.
A map and more details can be found on the website below.

Drawing from materials that include the ‘Birth of the Republic’ collection, the Jacob’s Biscuit Factory Archives, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers Association Archive and the Dublin Fire Brigade insurance maps of 1916, historian Donal Fallon will explain to potential researchers and the generally curious just how these items can be used in studies of the period.”

Social Role and Relevance of Museums – Discussion
18:00, Tue 21 Nov
National Museum, Kildare Street (Archaeology), Dublin 2
The discussion “Caretakers of Ireland’s Cultural Heritage? The Social Role and Relevance of Museums – Past and Present” in the National Museum on Tuesday will mark the 140th anniversary of the passing of the Science and Arts Museums Act which established the National Museum of Ireland for the people of Ireland.
The National Museum of Ireland is attracting more than 1mio visitors every year and was ranked as one of the Top 50 Museums in the world in 2013. As you most likely know, the museum consists of three sections in Dublin in Collins Barracks, in Kildare Street and in Merrion Row and has a country location in Turlough Park, Co. Mayo. And in addition to the interesting permanent exhibitions there are a large amount of free educational events for children and adults and a number of special events and special exhibitions throughout the year. And all this does cost NO admission charges, which is just brilliant!

Irish revolution and the Dublin City Archives – Talk
18:30, Tue 21 Nov
Cabra Library, Navan Road, Dublin 7
“Telling the story of the Irish revolution through the collections of Dublin City Library and Archives” is a talk by Donal Fallon, DCC Historian in Residence in teh Central Library on Monday (13:!0) and in Cabra Library on Tuesday (18:30).
“Archives are our window into the past, but just what can the collections of Dublin City Archives tell us about the Irish revolution, and how can researchers access and avail of these materials? Drawing from materials that include the ‘Birth of the Republic’ collection, the Jacob’s Biscuit Factory Archives, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers Association Archive and the Dublin Fire Brigade insurance maps of 1916, historian Donal Fallon will explain to potential researchers and the generally curious just how these items can be used in studies of the period.”

50th Anniversary of ‘Free Education’ – History Ireland Hedge School
19:00, Tue 21 Nov
National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin 2
“50th Anniversary of ‘Free Education'” is the topic of the next History Ireland Hedge School on Tuesday. Join the History Ireland editor, Tommy Graham and panellists – John Walshe (TCD), Carole Holohan (TCD), Frank Barry (TCD) and Mary O’Rourke (former Minister for Education and Senator). for a discussion on the introduction of free secondary education 50 years ago.
On 10 September 1967, Minister for Education Donogh O’Malley announced a scheme for free secondary education, much to the surprise of his cabinet colleagues, and of the Department of Finance in particular. But once word was out, there was no going back; expectations had been raised and the public response was hugely supportive. Within a decade participation rates at second level had doubled. But to what extent was the system subsidized before the announcement? To what extent has it been ‘free’ since? And beyond education, what was its effect socially and economically?
Admission is free.

Thanksgiving Day
08:00, Thu 23 Nov
Dublin (various locations)
Sooo many American festivities have spread around the world, but surprisingly Thanksgiving didn’t really make it yet to our shores. But maybe you have some American roots or just want to have a good reason for a big Turkey dinner. So here is the reminder: Today is Thanksgiving Day in the USA.
There are some other countries that celebrate Thanksgiving, for example Canada and Liberia, but they all celebrate it on different dates.
There might be some Thanksgiving events in Dublin, but because it nearly always involves food, they wouldn’t be free events.

The International Bar, 23 Wicklow Street, Dublin 2
Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.

Black Friday
08:00, Fri 24 Nov
Dublin (various locations)
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving Day in the USA. It is the start of the Christmas Shopping season in the USA and it got its name from the fact that the streets were black with people and cars after Thanksgiving Day on their way to the shops.
Shops in the USA open as early as possible on that day, hoping that this will maximise the revenue on that day. But since Internet shopping grew, now many online shops offer “Black Friday specials” throughout the whole week leading up to the day.
If you want to benefit from the specials are are buying your Christmas presents online, it would be a great help for the Dublin Event Guide if you used the website www.dublineventguide.com/shop to reach the online shops. If you use that page every time you go to Amazon and Ebay and others, the Dublin Event Guide will get a small reward for bringing you to that page. The price for products to you will not change, but you help keeping the Dublin Event Guide alive. Thank you!!

William Spence Engineering Works Cork St – Talk
13:00 – 14:00, Fri 24 Nov
Dublin City Library and Archive, 138-144 Pearse Street, Dublin 2
“William Spence Engineering Works Cork St: A Victorian Engineer in the Right Place at the Right Time” is a talk by Cathy Scuffil, Historian In Residence.
The Cork Street Foundry and Engineering Works of William Spence and Son was established in Dublin in 1856. It continued trading successfully over two generations until 1930. The company was situated on a large, circa 3 acre industrial site located at 105 -109 Cork Street, Dublin, on a site that, until the early 1850s, had housed the tanning and currier business of a James O’Neill, who also had a residence at 26 Cork Street.
It is generally accepted that the Spence operations that evolved over the years, should be ranked among the first and finest concerns of the kind in Ireland, devoted primarily to general engineering and steel foundry. The main achievements of the company were the construction of the Birr telescope and the little trains that served the Guinness brewery and system that was in existence in living memory. A number of church bells located in the Liberties are also of Spence origin.
Of interest were the houses constructed by William Spence for his employees at Spence’s Terrace, Cork Street and at Marion Villas – which was named for his much loved wife. After his sudden death in 1907, the business passed to his son Arthur. The company ceased trading in 1930. ‘Plant-Life’ occupies the premises today. The Rathmines Township commemorated William Spence in a unique way which is revealed during the presentation.
Admission is free but seats are limited to 90.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
If you are the wrong person in your job….Homeless Scandal!
It’s tough out there for the homeless people in Dublin. I can’t imagine many people enjoying living on the streets, sleeping in shop entrances, being kicked out all the time and not having much of a chance to get back into “normal” life. Yes, many of the homeless are not making things easier for themselves by being addicted to alcohol or other substances, but when you think about the savings most people have nowadays, there are MANY people just one month away from homelessness.
It happens like this: Unexpectedly your company fires you. That might be because they are restructuring or moving or closing down and possibly has nothing to do with your work. You don’t own your place, but rent it. You have to work until the last day of your employment and your employer doesn’t give you time to look for the next job/go to interviews. You have no savings because that was never your strongest point and the rent is so high anyway that you find it very hard to save anything. The job finishes but you have difficulties to find the next job. Maybe it is your skills, maybe your age, maybe the location, maybe your confidence, but things are not going your way and now the next rent is due and you can’t pay it. You will HAVE to move out. Some friends let you sleep on their couch. But soon you have used up all your friends and next you end up on the street.
We might think “This can’t happen to me.” but add some health problems or other issues and if there are no savings, many are just one months rent away from homelessness.
Would it be helpful in that situation if the people that look after the homeless have some understanding of the challenges? Maybe even have some empathy? We all agree that that would be a big help!
Unfortunately the head of the “Dublin Region Homeless Executive (DRHE)” which also calls itself sometimes “Dublin Region Housing Executive” isn’t so full of empathy or understanding it seems. On Tuesday, Eileen Gleeson, the head of the DRHE famously said at a meeting of the Dublin City Joint Policing Committee on Tuesday
“Let’s be under no illusion here, when somebody becomes homeless it doesn’t happen overnight, it takes years of bad behaviour probably, or behaviour that isn’t the behaviour of you and me.” www.thejournal.ie/eileen-gleeson-homeless-3699069-Nov2017/
Years of bad behaviour?! She really has no clue! She really seems to think that all homeless people are addicts or incapable to live in a home.
But that was not all! She also was talking about organisations that help homeless people and said “If they’re only getting a cup of soup and they’re homeless it isn’t helpful.”
Well, on a cold evening in the streets of Dublin, I would happily take a cup of soup and a sandwich if I was homeless and it could be a tremendous help to SURVIVE, so that I see the next morning when the snobs of the Dublin Region Homeless Executive tell me that it is all my own fault for being homeless. Unbelievable!
Eileen Gleeson was on the spot when she answered questions and made these statements, so sometimes we say things we don’t mean and use words we would/should not have used. In a very very supportive way and to help out Ciara Kelly on Newstalk offered Eileen Gleeson NUMEROUS opportunities to apologise, but there was no apology. She did say “To be honest, I could have probably used better language in trying to explain the point I was trying to make.” but that certainly doesn’t sound like an apology.
Can somebody who has so little understanding for her “clients” be the best person to provide good services????
