Hi all!
A brand new Dublin Event Guide is in your Inbox and while we are in the “slower” part of the year (“Shoulder season” for events, you could call it.) I still found more than 180 events for you. This week, I will keep this intro super short and am asking you to check the Dublin News. There is some important stuff there!
[quads id=1]
One thing I can not avoid, however: Unfortunately I need to talk about money AGAIN. Last week only EUR 20 were donated, which means that half way through November we still have to find EUR 260. That is a LOT! And I really really really need your help! PLEASE help if you can!!! You can do so via PayPal here even if you only have a few Euro, everything counts!! I have also added another way for donations if you prefer to use your credit card via GoFundMe here.
And don’t forget that you can also help without spending a cent of your own money, if you buy through the advertisement links that are in the Dublin Event Guide or that are on the Dublin Event Guide Shopping Page at www.DublinEventGuide/shop If you want to buy from Groupon or LivingSocial or Amazon or Bookdepository or eBay or Asos or New Look or PrettyLittleThing or SportsDirect, just go to that website and click on the relevant link and it will bring you to the right place. The company you buy from will take 5-8% out of their profit (depending on the company) and will reward the Dublin Event Guide for promoting that company. But importantly you don’t pay more! Here are the links: www.dublineventguide.com/shop Thanks for using this page!
++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 240 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help.
You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 73,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 240 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This weeks Feel Good Slot Quote is from the great Gandhi:
You may never know what results come of your actions, but if you do nothing, there will be no results. – Gandhi
So do SOMETHING! Take action! Move! Do it with a good heart and with passion …and I bet you will get good results!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
This week Leigh Ph and Irene D M were so wonderful to help with a donation! Thanks a lot!! You and all the other donors throughout the year are keeping the Dublin Event Guide alive! Your donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is EUR 240 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
Only one more week to Christmas. :-O Shocking! More about that next week, though, I just wanted to freak you out a bit. ;-)
This week, go to the Fusion Sunday World Culture Market and during the week have a look at all the Science Week events that are taking place. And another one? A designer clothes fashion sale in the RDS. It is for a charity (St. Michael’s House) and admission is free.

The Carnival Cabaret – Clowns Without Borders Birthday – Ticket Competition
15 November – 20:00-23:00 Grand Social, 35 Liffey Street Lower, Dublin 1
Clowns Without Borders celebrates its 10th year in Ireland with this special event. All funds raised will go towards their upcoming tour to Iraq in Spring next year to bring laughter and joy to those who have been affected by war.
The Carnival Cabaret will have music, circus, comedy and games throughout the night in the glorious Grand Social in Dublin.
Tickets are EUR 10 and can be bought via the Eventbrite site here.
To spread the word, Clowns Without Borders asked me if I would run a competition in the Dublin Event Guide and they made a pair of tickets available. I didn’t get a chance to do the draw yet, so if you enter before Sunday 18:00, your name will still go in the hat. If you want to win that pair of tickets, you have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the subject CLOWNS and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm or www.GoFundMe.com/DublinEventGuide

Huge Facebook Challenges and more!
Facebook have changed their algorithm again and where my daily post reached more than 12,000 people last Sunday, Three days later, the daily post then reached 1,200. That is a shocking drop and means that Facebook is more or less useless to reach you and to spread the word. So now the focus has to be back on this weekly e-mail magazine because that is the only reliable way to reach you. BUT I still haven’t cracked the challenge of getting this mail out to you before 09:00.
I have my work cut out! :-/ And I have decided that I will stop putting the daily posts on Facebook once the average daily reach drops below 800 people. It is just not worth the work anymore at that point. Sorry!
Another big challenge are the finances. Donations are kind of drying out at the moment and I haven’t yet decided how much debt I will carry before I will have to close down the whole Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), but there has to be a cut off somewhere. I will keep you posted when it is decided.
And please read about another challenge below.

Holidays vs Dublin Event Guide
If you are a Dublin Event Guide reader for a while, you will know that I am not letting holidays or other things stop me from compiling and sending the weekly e-mail magazine to all 24,000 subscribers. Usually I plan holidays around the Friday/Saturday deadline and also work while on holidays on the Event Guide to get it to you. 543 weeks now without a single interruption.
But on 22 November I am going (for the first time in the last 10 years) on holidays that interfere with TWO weekends and I am currently considering what to do. It will either a mini-version of the weekly magazine OR there might even be NO magazine at all. I am looking for your input on how to handle it, so drop me a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with FAR FAR AWAY as the subject line.
I will be away from 22 November until 01 December, which means that I would have to do a full Dublin Event Guide while away and with all the frustrations with Facebook and donations, I am considering the option of NOT sending a newsletter at all. Shocking, I know! ;-) What are your thoughts?
|
By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Thanks!
|
Say NO to Adblockers!
I use the Internet all the time and know how annoying advertisment can be. But I also spend close to 35 hours every week on this Dublin Event Guide where getting donations is hard work and where it would be sooooo much easier if you just clicked on the links in this Dublin Event Guide when you buy products or services. You are buying anyway and it doesn’t cost you any extra, so it would be cool to help the Dublin Event Guide.
BUT this plan ONLY work if you don’t use adblockers when you look at the Dublin Event Guide.
So, please, give ads a chance HERE. Free services are NEVER free, but they are ad funded. And if you don’t help funding them then soon they won’t be free anymore.

The “Opportunities” section was originally intended to give start-up companies and growing projects a chance to reach the Dublin Event Guide Community.
When sponsors came on board then I re-purposed this section to be the space for the sponsors to present their contribution to the Dublin Event Guide community and until last week the Energia Event Map was included here. The Energia Map is now in hibernation until early next year.
If you have a suggestion on how to use this section until then, drop me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com any serious suggestion will be considered. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Dublin Library of Things
12:00 – 16:00, Sat 11 Nov
Dublin Food Co-op, 12 Newmarket Square, Dublin 8
Every Thursday (17:30-19:30), Saturday (12:00-16:00) and Sunday (12:00-16:00) the Dublin Library of Things will be open at the Food Co-op during National Re-Use Month (October) and November.
A Library of Things is a place where people can borrow items needed only on an occasional basis, or that are too bulky or costly to own. By sharing these items it reduces the need for material production and consumption and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies.
The Library of Things will work on a membership basis. Anyone can join and then take out items for up to one week. Borrowing items will be free however there will be deposits on items relative to the value of the item. The Library of Things will also act as a drop off and collection point for WeShare members (www.weshare.ie/), an online community where people can list items that have to share, or things that they need.
The items in the Library of Things will all be doanted or loaned and therefore it depends on individuals and businesses what the library will have available. IN CASE OF EMERGENCY – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 11 Nov
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current exhibition in the Science Gallery is called “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY” and it will run from 12 October until 11 January. The exhibition looks at doomsday and emergency scenarios. How can we prepare for such a worst case situation? It is a very interesting exhibition that I recommend. Some exhibits need you to think/reflect a little, but that is a good thing! :-)
Exhibits are for example + 22 Doomsday Clocks that show how close we got to the end of the world in the period from 1945-2017 + a series of drawings teaching basic skills for challenging situations + Pandemic Spreading patterns in a globalised world + Microbiome Ark (a small satellite that carries human microbiome on board to kickstart life on earth again after a disaster) + a selection of Manuals for Civilisation The website below lists all exhibits and provides their explanation so that you can either before or after your visit check further details.
There is also a Situation Room where you can partake in a Catastrophe Citizen Assembly to decide on complex questions that could affect the survival of humanity. The Situation Room assembly will convene every hour. Check with the mediators how you can take part.
All Science Gallery exhibitions are suitable for ALL ages, even younger children will be able to take part/follow. For this exhibition, though, younger kids might need your help to understand some of the context.
I strongly suggest to use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Dublin Library of Things
12:00 – 16:00, Sun 12 Nov
Ideal items are sewing machines, kitchen appliances, DIY tools, halloween costumes, craft materials, games and sports equipment and gardening equipment. If you have any useful items in good working order that you would like to loan or donate to the library of things, or have other suggestions or questions for us, contact them at dublinlibraryofthings@gmail.com. Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
12:00, Sun 12 Nov
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally since last year, guided tours are provided with four tours on Friday and Sunday over the Summer and a reduced schedule in the winter. From 01 October until March 2018, the only tour is on Sundays from 12:00 and 20 places are available on that tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Käthe Kollwitz – Images of a Life – Film Screening
12:30 – 14:00, Sun 12 Nov
National Gallery, Merrion Square West, Dublin 2
“Käthe Kollwitz – Images of a Life” is a documentary by director Ralf Kirsten (93 minutes, GDR 1986, German, with English subtitles). It is a cinematic portrait of German artist Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945). The film traces her artistic stimulus and relates it to the political events of the 20th century.
“Käthe Kollwitz was 47 years old and already a well-established artist in Germany and abroad when Peter, her youngest son, volunteered to join the German army in World War I – two weeks later, he was killed. This painful tragedy changed Kollwitz’s life and art forever. She became a radical pacifist, and through her art she reflected on her son and on the meaning of war. After signing a petition against the Nazis, she was excluded from the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin and her art was labeled “degenerate.” Lonely and sick, Kollwitz spent the last days of her life near Dresden and died at the age of 78, before the end of World War II.”
“The exhibition Käthe Kollwitz: Life, Death and War” is currently on show in the National Gallery Print Gallery.
Admission is free.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 12 Nov
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Talking to My Father – Architecture Foundation Film Screening
18:30, Mon 13 Nov
Irish Architecture Foundation, 16 Bachelors Walk, Dublin 1
“Modern architecture in Ireland reached a high point in the early ’60s and one of its most celebrated figures was Robin Walker. Robin studied under Le Corbusier and later worked alongside Mies van der Rohe in Chicago. Upon his return to Ireland he became a key agent in the shaping of the emerging modern nation.
Looking again to Dublin’s streets which he has so faithfully recorded in earlier works (James Gandon, A Life; Alive, Alive Oh!), Sé Merry Doyle follows Simon Walker, a quarter of a century after Robin’s death, as he explores the legacy of his father’s work. The film allows Walker’s buildings to speak for themselves, taking us with Simon in his search for Robin’s architecture of place. Join the IAF for a screening of this documentary, directed by Sé Merry Doyle, in the IAF auditorium space 13+14+15 November.”

“Insects as Food?” – Alchemist Café – Science Week
19:00 – 21:00, Tue 14 Nov
NoLIta Dublin, 64 South Great George’s Street, Dublin 2
“Entomophagy is the human use of insects as food. This is not a remarkable concept in many parts of the world, but most diets in Ireland do not yet feature meaningful amounts of any insects or insect-derived ingredients. So far in Ireland, insects are being farmed towards non-human animal and plant feed ingredients. At this Alchemist Cafe you will find out about the potential and rationale for incorporating insects into the human diet.”
Speaker Anna Rettore is a graduate researcher in Dublin Institute of Technology investigating proteins derived from insects.
There will be samples of food-grade roasted insects, for everyone who wants, to try on the night.
Admission is free. This is a Science Week event.

“Mathematics: the Queen of the Sciences, or students’ nightmare?” is a talk as part of Science Week in the Alliance Francaise.

Why is our perception of the subject so polar? Can maths lessons be more student-friendly? This event looks for answers during a public discussion, guided by the film “How I Came to Hate Math” by Olivier Peyon, and other materials (maths students’ posters, maths comic books, board games). The discussion will be animated by researchers in mathematics. The event is supported by the French Embassy in Ireland.”

Talking to My Father – Architecture Foundation Film Screening
18:30, Wed 15 Nov
Admission is free, but registration is required via the link below.

Dublin Library of Things
17:30 – 19:30, Thu 16 Nov
Volunteers are also needed to man the library.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
The end of the Circus …as we know/knew it!
I don’t know when I was at a circus the last time. It must have been when I was 10 years of age or younger and I don’t know either if it was once or twice that I was at a circus, but it was definitely not more often.
So, I am clearly not a mad Circus fan and no Circus could build their business on people like me. But it did make a big impression on me. I remember clowns, and jugglers and a round sandy arena, but I also remember tigers and lions and elephants and possibly monkeys.
Thinking back, it was the animals and the clowns that impressed me most. I didn’t know if the animals were treated appropriately, but I was 10 and it wasn’t the first time that I had seen animals in cages or on leashes, so it didn’t concern me hugely. Since my circus visit back then, I have heard about mistreated animals, but I also have heard about circuses making huge efforts to look after the animals well.
Now it has been announced that from January 2018 the use of wild animals in circuses in Ireland will be banned and I am in two minds about it.
Obviously I am not supporting or condoning the abuse or bad treatment of animals (“wild” or non-wild!), but at the same time I remember the visit to a circus as a hugely positive and educational experience. I also wonder why only “wild” animals will be banned and if these “wild” animals are still that wild? What about a tiger whose parents and grand-parents and great-grand parents all were part of a circus. Is that still a “wild” animal? Or is it a “domesticated” animal. And why are ponies and dogs seen as different type of animals. They once were wild as well, I guess. And mistreating them is also not acceptable. We are training dogs with no hesitation to do tricks for us, but there is objection to train formerly wild animals.
Would it no have been an option to work on ensuring that no circus mistreats animals? I am clearly no expert in this area, but I am wondering.

It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com. BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
