Hi all!

Great news! This week you will get the Dublin Event Guide early than most weeks again. Why? I am at a seminar and had to start working early again on this edition. I hope you will make good use of the Dublin Event Guide this week again. Plenty of events!!

[ad]

Just a reminder that I have launched a Dublin Event Guide Facebook Group so that you can communicate directly with each other (Group Pages are open discussion forums.) It is not certain yet if the Group will be a success, it depends totally on the Group members, but it is worth giving a go. If you want to join the Group, go to www.facebook.com/groups/DublinEventGuide/

Thanks so much to the four great people who helped with donations this week. We are still well behind, but at least the SERIOUS danger has been averted. Please don’t stop helping if you can at PayPal here !

+++++++++

The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 70,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

+++++++++++

And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week I selected a quote by T Harv Eker. T Harv Eker is the creator of the Millionaire Mind Intensive weekend seminar that is listed below. It is a great course that will teach you how to handle your money better and how to sort out your Financial Life. The seminar is free if you book via the link here. It will take place from Friday 09 June until Sunday 11 June. You might wonder why it is free? Well the organisers will sell their other courses during the weekend and therefore offer this event for free. But I can guarantee you that you a) will not have to buy anything b) shouldn’t consider buying anything unless it is right for you and c) you will get LOTS of really good content over the three days that will make it worth your while to go to a free event. I will be there. Drop me a mail if you will also go! (dublineventguide@gmail.com)

T Harv Eker said:

If you want to make a permanent change, stop focusing on the size of your problems ans tart focusing on the size of you. – T Harv Eker

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend there is the Rugby Zone on Saturday, the One Family Family Day also on Saturday and then on Sunday I suggest you go to the Dublin Flea Market and the Baltic Day Festival. Let’s hope the weather stays nice! :-)

Bloom in the Park 2017 – Ticket Competition – LAST CHANCE!

Thurs 01 June – Mon 05 June (09:00-18:00)
Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

One of the most popular yearly events is Bord Bia’s Bloom festival in Phoenix Park and it is back over the June Bank Holiday weekend! Whether you want inspiration, education or entertainment, the place to be this June Bank Holiday weekend is the colourful Bloom Garden Festival in the Phoenix Park. This year’s event is five days long and packed with activities and things to see and experience. Kids go free and adults can buy their tickets on the website www.bloominthepark.com (use the promo code DEG17 and you can save some money).

Bord Bia has 5 sets of 2 Bloom tickets to give away to Dublin Event Guide readers and if you would like to win a pair of tickets, send an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with BLOOM2017 in the subject line and your name and phone number in the body of the mail and importantly, also send your address, because the tickets will be sent to you. Your mail has to be with me by Monday 29 May at 12:00. Originally I set the deadline for 24 May but there was soooo much interest, that I am re-opening for another few days, but on Monday at 12:00 all will be over.

In addition, Bord Bia is pleased to offer you all a very special ticket offer for 2017. Book on-line only on www.bloominthepark.com before the event and use the promotional code DEG17 to get an extra EUR 2 discount off the advance ticket price to Bloom. (This offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer.)

Bloom promises to be a great day out with something planned for all ages; it is a truly unique show, showcasing the finest Irish food, drink and of course horticulture. For any budding gardeners it will provide lots of inspiration and opportunities to pick up some beautiful plants, flowers, seeds and shrubs. Or if you want to explore growing your own fruit and vegetables then you’ll get lots of tips on how to start growing at the show. But if gardening isn’t your thing then you’ll still have plenty to keep you busy including the Superb Food Village with plenty of artisan producers; the Best in Season marquees featuring growers of seasonal fruit and vegetables; the Chef’s Quality Kitchen will host cookery demonstrations from some of Ireland’s much loved chefs including Neven Maguire, Catherine Fulvio, Fiona Uyema and Brian McDermott.

With an outdoor music stage, picnic area, engaging spaces, kids playground and lots more besides, the Bloom festival really is the place to be this June bank holiday weekend. Have a wonderful day out and make sure you visit the Bord Bia Food Village which celebrates the best of Irish food, showcasing numerous aspects of horticulture and agriculture!
And If you don’t fancy driving into the park, use the train or LUAS and then take the courtesy shuttle bus from Heuston station to the 70 acre Bloom site.

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first

www.dublineventguide.com/shop

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin Event Guide Smartphone App “Dublin For Free”

Find all details on where to get and how to install the app at www.dublineventguide.com/mobile.html

*****************************************************************************

The Big 500 Share is closing!

This is the last week in this attempt to raise money for the Dublin Event Guide after the 500th edition a few weeks ago. Next week I will announce the final results. But if you still want to help this week, this is how it goes: It is a fundraising campaign for the Dublin Event Guide (70%) and for two charities (30%) and everyone who donates will also get a gift (My new “Secret Dublin” Guide Book which will be completed very soon and will contain information about TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.)

You can now donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide but keep reading for more details if you have time.

The amount needed for the Dublin Event Guide in 2014 is EUR 3400 (EUR 2400 to send the weekly e-mail magazine and at least EUR 1000 to fix parts of the smartphone app and to improve the website.) So the closer we come to this, the better, but until today, we managed to raise EUR 1200. 400 Euro of that will go to the charities and the rest will just cover the Dublin Event Guide cost for 4 months. So your help is STILL needed!!!

You can donate now via this link: www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide and if PayPal doesn’t work for you send me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject “The Big 500 Share”) and I will suggest alternatives. Thanks for your support!!!!

The two charities that you have chosen in a public vote are the Alzheimer’s Association and the Homeless charity “Peter McVerry Trust”.

In the next few weeks I will also tell you a new attempt to ensure the continued financing of the Dublin Event Guide because without at least being able to cover the cost, I will not be able to continue. If you have ideas for fundraisers, let me know, please. I will consider every (nearly every!!!! ;-) ) suggestion!

PhotoIreland Festival 2017

The PhotoIreland Festival (01-31 May) consists of exhibitions, workshops, photobook launches and talks. This year, the festival explores how Photography is used to share accounts of personal experiences related to conflict: The Recount of Conflict. Many events are free, but the website doesn’t make it easy to identify what is free and what isn’t. For that reason I wasn’t able to include a comprehensive list of events and instead have to ask you to check the website yourself.

On the Programme Page here, you will find lots of nice pictures that represent individual events, but you will have to check them all to find out what is free and when it is happening.

By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Thanks!

Spring into Heritage 2017 – Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown event programme

The “Spring into Heritage” programme in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown is back and will consist of a series of free guided tours between 24 April and 18 June in a a whole range of heritage sites.

Most tours happen on weekdays and at most venues there are two tours per week.

The full programme can be downloaded here in PDF format. Or you can find some information on this website: events.dlrcoco.ie/event/spring-heritage-2017

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Eventbrite is the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and their support is very much appreciated!

If you are regularly or occasionally organising events, keep an eye on the Eventbrite blog. It covers a wide variety of event-related and event-relevant topics that can help you hugely! Read more here.

And if you are looking for free or non-free events, you can find them at www.eventbrite.ie

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”

09:00, Sat 27 May

Dublin (various locations)

Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”. This is a difficult description as everybody ages, but the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not much and nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared. In addition most 55-60 years olds wouldn’t appreciate it being classified as “older age”. ;-)

Where does that leave us? We don’t know but, I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-)

There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website doesn’t have the best search facility, but you can also download the brochure via this page (look for the Download link at the bottom). To find events go to the WHAT’S ON page on the website, but then you will have to click on “SEARCH FOR EVENT” otherwise, you will get a seemingly random list of events. (Very non-intuitive and totally unsuitable for elderly computer users!)

In “Dublin City” there are approx. 60 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events that you find are not sorted by date, but seem to be in random order.

Over the coming 4 weeks, I will include a number of free Bealtaine events in the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, but with such a tricky search facility, I won’t be able to include all events, so please check the Bealtaine website here: www.bealtaine.ie

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”

09:00, Sun 28 May

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours

10:00 – 16:30, Sun 28 May

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

There will be no Magazine Fort Tours on Friday 02 June and Sunday 04 June!!

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”

09:00, Mon 29 May

09:00, Wed 31 May

National Fish & Chips Day

09:00, Wed 31 May

Various locations in Dublin and Dun Laoghaire

Wednesday is ITICA Day and ITICA stands for “Irish Traditional Italian Chipper Association” and on that day you get your fish & chips for half price in all takeaways of ITICA members. It’s not really a free event, BUT your second portion of fish & chips is indeed free. ;-) And because you will benefit from that day (if you so wish), I decided to include it here.

Retreat from Globalisation? Brexit, Trump and the New Populism – Conference

09:00, Wed 31 May

Royal Irish Academy, 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2

“Retreat from Globalisation? Brexit, Trump and the New Populism” is a Conference of the Royal Irish Academy Standing Committee on International Affairs.

Are Trump, Brexit and populism symptoms of broader phenomena associated with globalisation? Will the elections in France, the Netherlands and Germany in 2017 force globalisation to retreat in the face of authoritarian, right-wing and anti-immigration politics? Is this process simply occurring in western democracies or is it a global occurrence?

This conference will consider recent landmark events and the uncertainties that arise from them in wider, deeper and longer frameworks of analysis.

Admission is free, but registration is required via the Eventbrite website below.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

College Green Plaza – The Good and the Bad

Already more than 2 weeks ago the Irish Times reported about the new layout and timescales of the creation of the College Green plaza. I had planned to write about it here before, but only now got the time. Anyway, the creation will take at least another 5 months until it has planning permission and then another 18 months until it is finished. So there is still plenty of time to discuss it’s good and bad sides.

As a car driver I am not completely thrilled with the increasing pedestrianisation of Dublin, but as a Dublin Bike cyclist, pedestrian and as an Electric Unicycle user (ask if you want to know! ;-) ), more car free areas make sense to me. So I am always a little conflicted when it comes to changes like that.

However, as long as the changes are good, we will all get used to it and will gain from it. So, are the changes good?

1) I think having a central civil plaza in Dublin is a great development and much needed.

2) It will HAVE to be available for events (e.g. regular flea or food market, gigs, street performance and busking). Unfortunately Dublin City has in the past been more a spoil sport than a supporter, but here is an opportunity to do better!

3) Ban ALL cars from the plaza! Obviously the LUAS will have to go through it and that’s not a problem and as long as they use the same lane, Busses could also go through, but MAKE SURE that there will be NO taxis! It just doesn’t make sense to have a pedestrianised plaza and then allow taxis to compete with each other for business or to have a situation where they suddenly stop to pick up people and therefore interfere with LUAS and busses.

4) I read about “32 water jets” and was concerned that a fountain will be built there. This would immediately reduce the flexibility the plaza will provide. But on closer inspection it looks like 32 water jets built into the street level surface. So there is no fountain, but the water will come directly out of the “floor”. Nothing new or unique, many cities have similar fountains, but there is nothing wrong with that.

5) Unfortunately the existing trees will all be cut down. Not something I like the idea of. Yes, new trees will be planted, but that doesn’t replace 1:1 an existing tree. I do understand though why the current trees are in the way. To make maximum use of the plaza you have to get rid of use-limiting features in the wrong places.

6) 18 months of more digging in Dublin doesn’t sound great, but hopefully the result will be worth it

7) If there is a nice civil plaza, it would be great to sit there and enjoy the place during weather like we had this week. But benches or concrete blocks or other street furniture to sit on will automatically reduce the versatility of the plaza. So as a result, you can’t really provide anything that will make the plaza more “homely”.

So all in all, it seems to be a good idea, that makes a lot of sense. But my non-negotiable requirement would be that the car ban is absolute and includes taxis and my other requirement would be that use of the plaza will be regulated already now and will explicitly permit all types of busking and street performance.

What do you think about the proposed design?
