Hi all!
My week was mixed with some great achievements and some bad news. Sounds like a normal week in life, right? I have “launched” the new Dublin Event Guide Facebook Group (we already have a Page with 70,000 Followers). Facebook Groups are more like a get together where people can exchange their opinions, can chat, can discuss things if they want. So it is less me telling you something about events, but you can talk to each other if you wish. I don’t expect that the group will become huge, but I hope it will become a lively environment for Dublin Event Guide users. The Group is here.
[ad]
The posting format is the same as in previous weeks: Website first for the Saturday events, then adding more events for Sunday and weekdays and then the mail will be sent to all 24,000.
Bad news, however on the donation front! Not a single donation last week. That’s never a good thing! If you can help, please go to PayPal here to help!
+++++++++
The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 70,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
+++++++++++
And here is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week I selected a quote by Tony Robbins. I was at his Unleash the Power Within (UPW) in London two weeks ago and it was an absolutely amazing event. If it was free, I would say EVERYONE should DEFINITELY go, but it is not free and it is no cheap (mind you, there is a great discount at the moment) it seems like a pricey event but I guarantee that everyone who goes will find that it is money well spend. It will change your life if your open to change (or if you are looking for change)!!
One of Tony Robbins’ famous quotes is
It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.
And it is true! When you make a decision, you decide to take a certain path and that path will have an impact on possibly the rest of your life.

Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend the TWO (!!) Pet/Dog events Pawsivity and Pets in the City (both on Sunday) are on my list. Then there is the Fusion Sundays market and the Harold’s Cross Festival. Both also on Sunday. I will go to the Science Gallery to see the Robot exhibition once more.
And if you are a parent who has to find entertainment for your kids, make your way to Dun Laoghaire to the Kids Guide Summer Camp Fair.

Bloom in the Park 2017
Thurs 01 June – Mon 05 June (09:00-18:00) Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
One of the most popular yearly events is Bord Bia’s Bloom festival in Phoenix Park and it is back over the June Bank Holiday weekend! Whether you want inspiration, education or entertainment, the place to be this June Bank Holiday weekend is the colourful Bloom Garden Festival in the Phoenix Park. This year’s event is five days long and packed with activities and things to see and experience. Kids go free and adults can buy their tickets on the website www.bloominthepark.com (use the promo code DEG17 and you can save some money).
Bord Bia has 5 sets of 2 Bloom tickets to give away to Dublin Event Guide readers and if you would like to win a pair of tickets, send an e-mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with BLOOM2017 in the subject line and your name and phone number in the body of the mail and importantly, also send your address, because the tickets will be sent to you. Your mail has to be with me by Wednesday 24 May at 12:00. Two sets will be given away to all entries via the e-mail as described above. The other three sets we will give away through a new competition procedure and you will hear from me about that during the week in a separate mail!
In addition, Bord Bia is pleased to offer you all a very special ticket offer for 2017. Book on-line only on www.bloominthepark.com before the event and use the promotional code DEG17 to get an extra EUR 2 discount off the advance ticket price to Bloom. (This offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer.)
Bloom promises to be a great day out with something planned for all ages; it is a truly unique show, showcasing the finest Irish food, drink and of course horticulture. For any budding gardeners it will provide lots of inspiration and opportunities to pick up some beautiful plants, flowers, seeds and shrubs. Or if you want to explore growing your own fruit and vegetables then you’ll get lots of tips on how to start growing at the show. But if gardening isn’t your thing then you’ll still have plenty to keep you busy including the Superb Food Village with plenty of artisan producers; the Best in Season marquees featuring growers of seasonal fruit and vegetables; the Chef’s Quality Kitchen will host cookery demonstrations from some of Ireland’s much loved chefs including Neven Maguire, Catherine Fulvio, Fiona Uyema and Brian McDermott.
With an outdoor music stage, picnic area, engaging spaces, kids playground and lots more besides, the Bloom festival really is the place to be this June bank holiday weekend. Have a wonderful day out and make sure you visit the Bord Bia Food Village which celebrates the best of Irish food, showcasing numerous aspects of horticulture and agriculture! And If you don’t fancy driving into the park, use the train or LUAS and then take the courtesy shuttle bus from Heuston station to the 70 acre Bloom site.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

The Big 500 Share is closing!
This is the last week in this attempt to raise money for the Dublin Event Guide after the 500th edition a few weeks ago. Next week I will announce the final results. But if you still want to help this week, this is how it goes: It is a fundraising campaign for the Dublin Event Guide (70%) and for two charities (30%) and everyone who donates will also get a gift (My new “Secret Dublin” Guide Book which will be completed very soon and will contain information about TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.)
You can now donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide but keep reading for more details if you have time.
The amount needed for the Dublin Event Guide in 2014 is EUR 3400 (EUR 2400 to send the weekly e-mail magazine and at least EUR 1000 to fix parts of the smartphone app and to improve the website.) So the closer we come to this, the better, but until today, we managed to raise EUR 1200. 400 Euro of that will go to the charities and the rest will just cover the Dublin Event Guide cost for 4 months. So your help is STILL needed!!!
You can donate now via this link: www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide and if PayPal doesn’t work for you send me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject “The Big 500 Share”) and I will suggest alternatives. Thanks for your support!!!!
The two charities that you have chosen in a public vote are the Alzheimer’s Association and the Homeless charity “Peter McVerry Trust”.
In the next few weeks I will also tell you a new attempt to ensure the continued financing of the Dublin Event Guide because without at least being able to cover the cost, I will not be able to continue. If you have ideas for fundraisers, let me know, please. I will consider every (nearly every!!!! ;-) ) suggestion!

Event for Parents – Summer Camp Fair
The Kids Guide Summer Camp Fair is back again this year and last year lots of parents told me that it was very helpful because they found a suitable Summer Camp for their kids at this fair without having to search through tens or even hundreds of websites. The Kids Guide is back this Sunday from 10:30-17:00. It will take place in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire and that might seem far for some of you but imagine the advantage of talking to the people face to face that run the Summer Camp instead of having to trust a website! All details about the event are in the Sunday section.

PhotoIreland Festival 2017
The PhotoIreland Festival (01-31 May) consists of exhibitions, workshops, photobook launches and talks. This year, the festival explores how Photography is used to share accounts of personal experiences related to conflict: The Recount of Conflict. Many events are free, but the website doesn’t make it easy to identify what is free and what isn’t. For that reason I wasn’t able to include a comprehensive list of events and instead have to ask you to check the website yourself.
On the Programme Page here, you will find lots of nice pictures that represent individual events, but you will have to check them all to find out what is free and when it is happening.

By buying through the ads in this Dublin Event Guide, you help the Dublin Event Guide! Thanks!

If you are regularly or occasionally organising events, keep an eye on the Eventbrite blog. It covers a wide variety of event-related and event-relevant topics that can help you hugely! Read more here.
And if you are looking for free or non-free events, you can find them at www.eventbrite.ie

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”
09:00, Sat 13 May
Dublin (various locations)
Every May the Bealtaine Festival takes place all over Ireland and it “Celebrates arts and creativity as we age”. This is a difficult description as everybody ages, but the organisers “Age & Opportunity” actually want to address the “older age”. Ok, that helps a little, but not much and nobody still really knows what the target age is. In previous years, a guidance of 55+ was given but that has disappeared. In addition most 55-60 years olds wouldn’t appreciate it being classified as “older age”. ;-)
Where does that leave us? We don’t know but, I guess if you feel older, this festival is for you and if you don’t, then the festival is not for you. ;-)
There will be many events throughout May and a good few of them are free. The website doesn’t have the best search facility, but you can also download the brochure via this page (look for the Download link at the bottom). To find events go to the WHAT’S ON page on the website, but then you will have to click on “SEARCH FOR EVENT” otherwise, you will get a seemingly random list of events. (Very non-intuitive and totally unsuitable for elderly computer users!)
In “Dublin City” there are approx. 60 events, but as I said, not all are free. Oddly, the events that you find are not sorted by date, but seem to be in random order.
Over the coming 4 weeks, I will include a number of free Bealtaine events in the Dublin Event Guide for Free Events, but with such a tricky search facility, I won’t be able to include all events, so please check the Bealtaine website here: www.bealtaine.ie

Culture Date with Dublin 8
10:00, Sat 13 May
Dublin 8 (various locations)
Like Dublin 1 and Dublin 2, Dublin 8 is a HUGE part of Dublin. It reaches from Christ Church to Kilmainham Gaol and from the Liffey to the Grand Canal. On Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 May the very first “neighbourhood festival” takes place in Dublin 8 and everyone is invited to it.
All events are free, but most needed registration and unfortunately all tickets are gone. So unfortunately there is not much left to do if you have no tickets.
On Saturday and Sunday all guided tours in the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Richmond Barracks, Irish National War Memorials, Kilmainham Gaol, Magazine Fort, Goldebridge Cemetery and on Pat Liddy’s Walking Tours are booked out.
All that is left are a few self-guided tours in IMMA. IMMA Gardens, the National War Memorials and in Kilmainham and on Sunday afternoon there is a Family Explorer event in the Irish Museum of Modern Art from 14:00-16:00 with artwork exploration and workshops for families with children.
So, what’s the “verdict” about this new event? Well, it is great if you have tickets to a guided tour, but if you don’t it is an absolute non-event! The initiative is great, the idea is good, but big events that do not require tickets are required to make it a proper festival.
Culture Night is so successful because you do NOT need to plan and book tickets and there is something to do for everybody. “Culture Date with Dublin 8” is nowhere near a “neighbourhood festival” because most of the people are excluded from visiting the neighbourhood on the weekend for lack of venues to go to. It’s a start, but hopefully it will be much better in 2018!

Humans Need Not Apply – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 13 May
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 21 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?
About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelgänger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.
The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.
Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Mother’s Day …again
08:00, Sun 14 May
Dublin (various locations)
Yes, I know that Mother’s Day in Ireland has already taken place, BUT a LOT of Dublin Event Guide readers have mothers in other countries throughout the world and before you forget: Sunday 14 May is Mother’s Day in most of the world. Approx. 90 countries celebrate this day on 14 May and that includes USA, Australia, Brazil and most continental European countries.
If you are from one of these countries, don’t forget to contact your mom if she is still around. If it doesn’t “affect” you, just ring your mom anyway and tell her you thought of her. I bet she will appreciate it. ;-)

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”
09:00, Sun 14 May
Dublin (various locations)

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 14 May
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally since last year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours with a reduced schedule over the winter. And since 02 April there will be tours again every Friday and Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 + 15:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

The Market features a huge array of International stalls, ethnic food, live music and entertainment for kids. You can buy handmade goods, arts and crafts, recycled products, jewellery, clothes and food. The market is held every second Sunday of the month.
There is always a great atmosphere and I definitely recommend this monthly market.

Humans Need Not Apply – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 14 May
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. Bealtaine Festival “for older people”
09:00, Mon 15 May
Dublin (various locations)

Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2
This is a public lecture by Dr Lauren Arrington (University of Liverpool) during her fellowship at the Trinity Long Room Hub in collaboration with the School of English:
From 1928, W.B. Yeats was a seasonal resident of Rapallo, Italy, where he lived and worked alongside Ezra Pound. Pound had moved to Italy in 1924, believing that Mussolini’s government would create the right conditions for writers and artists. In “Fighting Spirits” Lauren Arrington will talk about how Italian fascism and Yeats’s collaborations with Pound shaped his writing about the Irish revolution.

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”
09:00, Wed 17 May
Dublin (various locations)

Dublin’s Culture Connects: Around the Table – Film Screening
13:15, Wed 17 May
National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin 2
The National Library is involved in “The National Neighbourhood: Around the Table” project. This project connects communities old and new across Dublin’s historic central area with artists of different disciplines to explore the food history of the area. Groups visited the library as part of the project. Themes of mothering, belonging, words and work were shared through mapping the story, role and journey of food in the city – from the docks to the markets, and from the streets to the table.
The short film “Around the Table” (24 min) was made as part of the project, and explores Dublin’s food history through the memories of Dublin’s dock workers, workers from Cadbury’s who explain why the ‘Flake’ produced in Dublin had the best taste to current developments in food choices.
Admission is free. The film will be screened on 03+10+17+24 May.

Birds of the Mountaintop – Talk
20:00, Thu 18 May
National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
“Birds of the Mountaintop” with Sinead Cummins from BirdWatch Ireland will look at some of Ireland’s most enigmatic birds which inhabit some of our wildest landscapes.
“From the spectacular aerial ‘skydancing’ of hen harriers, to the melodic song of the skylark, to the cry of our breeding curlew, our mountains are home to many resident and migrant birds. Yet many of our upland birds are species of high conservation concern and they are increasingly under threat from changes to this wild and beautiful landscape.”

International Bar Jazz Night
21:30, Thu 18 May
The International Bar, 23 Wicklow Street, Dublin 2
Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.
Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.
Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Bealtaine Festival “for older people”
09:00, Fri 19 May
Dublin (various locations)

Magazine Fort – FOUR Guided Tours
10:00 – 16:30, Fri 19 May
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
We are back where we were before…and we have learned NOTHING! – House prices in Dublin
Just 9 years ago in 2008 the country nearly collapsed when the banks and the property market got in serious trouble. People couldn’t pay their mortgages anymore because they had paid too much for the properties they lived in and for investment properties and many are STILL hurting from the losses. But memory is a short term thing!!
Back then, the mess was created by builders overcharging to make a big profit and by buyers overpaying because they expected massive profits. Last weekend it seemed as if 2008 had never happened. I heard about it on Newstalk but after a good search found an article about it in the Irish Times: Twelve out of fifteen apartments in the Hanover Lofts development at Grand Canal Quay were sold over one single weekend! The price? The 4x one-bedroom apartments start at EUR 415,000 and the 11x two-bedroom apartments start at EUR 575,000.
The madness is back with a vengeance!
What does that mean for us? If you own a property you can celebrate because the price is definitely going up. And if you don’t won any property there are two options: Either start panicking because you need to buy NOW and not wait any longer. OR: RELAX!! The prices are already FAR beyond what is affordable for many. So no rush for your buying! Maybe there will be another crash, THEN it is your turn! ;-)

If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself. This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
