Hi all!

Here I am again! July is already coming to an end and the end of another month is always indicated by another Dublin Flea Market on Sunday. Ok, the calendar kind of announces it loud and clear as well, but I am meant to talk about events here or am I not. ;-)

As a “by the way” I mentioned last week that we (Kevin Doyle & The Way it Was Orchestra) will be on the “Saturday Night with Miriam”. I sing in the backing choir and while it wasn’t the first time we performed during an RTE Talk Show, it was an interesting experience again. Last time it was the Late Late Show with Pat Kenny. Hmm, what can I say, Miriam O’Callaghan is soo different to Pat Kenny. She seems genuinely interested in her guests. Ohh and if you want to see and hear us live in concert, then you should come to the Olympia Theatre on 16 August. We are currently working hard on a new show. The show is called “The Elvis Songbook” and it contains all the best songs of Elvis Presley. For tickets you can go here www.ticketmaster.ie/Kevin-Doyle-Sings-the-Elvis-Presley-Songbook-tickets/artist/997678

This weekend has a good few interesting events in store for us again and to find out about them you should continue reading. ;-)

For this week’s “feel good” slot I found a great video on You Tube. Don’t watch it if the thought of weddings causes trauma (Yes, this “condition” does exist!), but for everybody else, have a look at this cool entrance into the church at a wedding. Anybody interested in doing something similar in Ireland? ;-)

Nearly all of the 4400+ subscribers only joined because someone else recommended this Event Guide to them!! But amazingly ;-) there are still a few people out there that haven’t subscribed yet, so let’s get them. :-)

Thanks to Siobhan C., Jackie B. and Penny O’D. who contributed a much appreciated donation this week!

Currently more than 4500 people are receiving this Event Guide every week and the wonderful and nice people that have helped financially to get this newsletter to you every week are listed in the next section. To keep this newsletter going in its current form and to improve the layout and readability your help is needed too! All I am asking for is 1 single Euro per month (that is just 25 cent per newsletter). For a whole year that is less than 3 pints or less than 2 gin+tonic or similar. I know times are tough for many and if 12 Euro per year is too much, then please accept this newsletter as a gift to you! However, if you can spare two drinks per year to help with the cost for this weekly newsletter that helps you save so much more than EUR 12, then please help with your contribution.
You can transfer your donation directly to “Joerg Steegmueller, AIB, SortCode 93-36-78, AccountNo 03556043” or donate using PayPal or your credit card by following this link to the PayPal donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm.
Alternatively you can send a mail to me (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and we can arrange a different route for your donation.

______Joerg’s Picks______________

Since this newsletter is getting longer and longer with all the free events available, this section is meant to provide some help in picking and choosing the events I will or would go to. This is not the “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences, so if it helps you I am glad, but feel free to ignore this section completely! :-) All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

——————————————————–

Lots of events this weekend! I definitely will go to the Kings of Concrete on Saturday or Sunday. Then on Sunday I will probably go to the Dublin Flea Market and definitely to the Big Bang Festival later. During the day I might go to Bray for the Air Display or will stay in Dublin and go to the Northside Music Festival in St. Anne’s Park instead. Oh and the Comedy Crunch in Shebeen is another hot contender for my Sunday entertainment. Too many options. ;-)
During the week, there is not THAT much happening, but I will do whatever possible to try to make a visit to the Soul Power gig in The Living Room on Thursday. The guys are really great.

______Competition______________

OUTDOORS IRELAND – WIN A CARAUNTOOHIL CLIMB
Carrauntoohil is the highest peak in Ireland. With 1038 metre it is central peak of the MacGillicuddy Reeks in Co. Kerry and today I have a special competition price for you that has to do with this mountain.
Many of you have heard of Outdoors Ireland before. Nathan Kingerlee runs Adventure Breaks, Yoga Adventure Breaks, Canoe Trips, Rock Climbing, Hill Walking and anything else that has to do with “outdoors” and “adventure”. ;-) Have a look at his website www.outdoorsireland.ie for the full range. In August he will be running a guided night climb of Carrauntoohil, to be on the summit for dawn. Sounds amazing! To let you all know, Nathan has given me with a place on this night climb for a competition (a value of EUR 85). So, one of you can win this exciting trip and as always it is simple to take part. If you are interested keep in mind that you need a certain amount of equipment and a good level of fitness, so it is not a stroll trough the park, but the reward is definitely worth it! You can read all the details about the climb and what you need etc. here outdoorsireland.blogspot.com/2009/06/guided-night-ascent-of-carrauntoohil.html. So, if you want to be in with a chance to win this place on the night climb, you have to send me a mail with the subject OUTDOORS and your name and phone number in the body of the mail. IN ADDITION you have to do a little bit of work this time and answer in the body of the mail the following question: ‘What is the name of the charity with which Outdoors Ireland has teamed up with to run these night climbs?’ Your mail has to be with me by Tues 04 Aug. This is a bit earlier than normal for competitions but that is so that you have some time left to prepare for the trip.
If you definitely want to be part of the climb and want to make sure that you get one of the limited number of places on the trip, you can book with Nathan immediately via info@outdoorsireland.com or 086 860 45 63.

NEW HORIZON EXPEDITIONS – BOOK COMPETITION
“New Horizon Expeditions” are offering you the chance to win a copy of “Tom Crean, an Illustrated Life” by Michael Smith. This book details the life of Ireland’s own polar explorer, Tom Crean. Born in Anascaul in Kerry he was instrumental in several historical attempts to conquer the South Pole with names such as Captain Robert Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton. This pictorial anthology celebrates the exploits of Tom Crean through a series of outstanding photographs charting his life from his early days on a Kerry farm, through decades of heroism in the Antarctic and back to retirement in Ireland. To be in with a chance to win this book, follow the following link: www.newhorizon.ie/EG/index.htm. The closing date for this competition is 04 August 2009.

All events in this Competition Section are non-free events, but the organisers are making free tickets available for you to win. I usually get lots of competition entries and unfortunately not everybody can win, so even if you are not the winner, please consider going to an event to support the organisers. :-) If you don’t win, and will go to the event, please help showing the organisers that promoting their event in the Dublin Event Guide is beneficial and mention to them that you heard about the event through “Joerg’s Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”. Thanks!

DIGITAL CAMERA FOUND AT OXEGEN – SEARCH FOR OWNER
Yesterday I got a mail from Maurice Coyle. He was at Oxegen and found a digital camera. The camera was in the mud with little chance of survival and so he took the initiative and is now working hard to reunite the camera with its rightful owner. Maurice has set up a Facebook group to share some of the pictures he found on the camera with the world so that the camera’s owner can be identified and found. Unfortunately his quest was not rewarded with success yet and that is were YOU come in: Have a look at the pictures and with a bit of luck someone can identify one of the people on the pictures! The link is here and let’s see if Social Media and Social Networking together with Maurice’s preparedness to take action can even reunite lost property with their owners: www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=104741083894

IKEA DUBLIN TO OPEN FINALLY
After a wait of about 10 years finally Ikea will open their new shop in Dublin (Ballymun to be precise). For many years they were not interested in opening a shop here because Ireland had (and as far as I know still has) a size limit for hypermarkets. The only exception is B&Q in Blanchardstown and now Ikea (who got a special permission). When finally the permission for the shop was granted others tried to stop it because they claimed that the streets couldn’t handle the traffic. The consequence was a forced delay of the opening until the M50 is upgraded. The opening date was set for the 27 July, but I am sure you are not surprised that the M50 is far from being finished! Sometimes I wonder if the lunatics are running the asylum. www.independent.ie/national-news/fears-of-chaos-on-m50-as-ikea-to-open-doors-1831818.html My suggestion is that you stay FAR away from the M50 around Ballymun and from Ikea for at least 2-3 weeks and avoid the whole area particularly on the weekends. We have waited for soo long, a few more weeks won’t make a big difference. If you want to get to the airport and need to use the M50, give yourself PLENTY of extra time!

COLLEGE GREEN TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS NEAR
At many points near Dame Street, College Green, Westmoreland Street and D’Olier Street you see big flashing signs telling motorists about the “College Green Bus Priority” from 27 July. What a stupid description! “Bus Priority” means that the bus has priority but others are still allowed. Not for College Green anymore. From 07:00-10:00 and from 16:00-19:00 from Mon-Fri ONLY busses are allowed to drive into Dame Street or into the non-pedestrianised part of Grafton Street (near Molly Malone). This is certainly not a “bus prioritisation” but a street closure! Because people are not properly informed I can imagine there will be a good bit of chaos initially. The new rules kick in on 27 July. I think the whole concept is totally flawed and a crazy idea and I am totally against the street closure there before the new Liffey Bridge is opened and unless the public transport system has been significantly improved. But I guess I have to apply to become a Mayor of Dublin before anybody will listen to my opinion. ;-) www.transport4dublin.ie/ On this website you will find a link to a brochure that provides proper details.

BT IRELAND CLOSING DOWN
…for residential customers. The company is not closing completely down, but they are getting rid of all their residential and small business customers and will only continue providing services to large businesses. So if you have a BT landline or if your Internet connection is provided by BT, you will be offloaded to Vodafone as your new service provider. You don’t have a choice in that process, but you certainly can change service providers whenever you want. Some BT customers will appreciate the fact that their bills might be more accurate in future as it seems that BT had serious problems in that respect for a long long time. Be prepared that plans and prices will change and make sure you check all the information that is sent to you so that you know what is happening. 87,000 customers will be affected. www.siliconrepublic.com/news/article/13467

———Opportunities—————–

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. If you are one of the courageous people who has recently taken the risk and has started a company and if you could do with spreading the word, I am happy to help you! My contribution will be to let the 4000+ readers of the Event Guide know about your new business and hopefully that will kick start something big for you. In return I expect you to tell your clients and friends about the Event Guide – not a demanding task, I would think. :-) (Please note that this offer is for start-ups in relatively early stages, not for established companies/enterprises. If you are established and you want to reach the readers of this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I will be happy to discuss the (very affordable) advertisement options with you. :-) )

If you want to promote your start-up/young company here for free, let me know: dublineventguide@gmail.com.

THE PLATFORM – DART CONCERT
The DART celebrated its 25th birthday this week. I had no clue about that, so I couldn’t tell you before it took place, but there are still some celebrations and you can read-up on the birthday etc. The information is here www.irishrail.ie/news_centre/news.asp?action=view&news_id=388 and the celebrations are some concerts called “The Platform” in Pearse Street DART Station. On Fri 24 July “Giraffes” will perform from 17:00-19:00.

FESTIVAL OF STORY AND SONG – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
From Fri 24-Sun 26 July the Festival of Story and Song will take place in Farmleigh House. The events on Friday and Saturday are ticketed and it is unlikely that you can still get tickets at this stage. www.farmleigh.ie/culturalevents/currentevents/summerprogramme2009/july/#d.en.10371
The Friday event (20:00) is entitled ‘Lift The Latch’:
An evening of stories, song and music in the Ballroom at Farmleigh with: Clare Murphy, Fionnualla Gill, Helen Davies, Mary Medlicott, Phil Callery, Padraigin Ni Uallachain, Sibba Karlsdottir and Suse Weisse. The MC’s are Nuala Hayes and Jack Lynch.
On Saturday evening (20:00) Robin Williamson presents ‘Gems of Celtic Story’ with special guest: Fionnuala Gill.
On Saturday and on Sunday lots of events will take place during the day and no tickets are required for these events. Jack Lynch, the organiser of the event, sent me lots of information, including a nice looking brochure, but unfortunately this brochure is not on the Farmleigh House website and I couldn’t find it anywhere else either.
The Farmleigh House website has a comprehensive schedule for the two days and because the list is too long, I suggest that you check there. Alternatively you can just go to Farmleigh House during the day and go o the next available event, from what I can see every single event is promising.

WORK & TRAVEL ABROAD – INFO TALK
The Travel Company, i-to-i, is coming to Dublin for a free event. On Sat 25 July from 10:30-13:30 you can find out about volunteer projects worldwide and how to get qualified to travel and teach English abroad. The event sounds interesting, however the accuracy of information about the venue is not perfect. The company website www.i-to-i.com/travel-events/ says that the event will take place in the National Museum of Ireland, but doesn’t clarify if it is in the national Museum site in Kildare Street or in Collins Barracks. A Google Map indicates that it is the National Museum in Kildare Street. (Other websites (www.dublin.ie/calendar_details.aspx?eventid=1417) claim the event will take place in the Irish Volunteer Centre in O’Connell Street, but I assume this is old and outdated information. Ideally you will ring i-to-i to confirm: 058 400 50

FESTIVAL OF STORY AND SONG – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
(See Friday for details)

KINGS OF CONCRETE – CIVIC OFFICE AMPHITHEATRE
Kings of Concrete is back for a fourth year. Organised by Dublin City this is a great event for participants and spectators: “Skateboarding, rollerblading, bmx, parkour, breakdance, live street art and sweet sounds… we got the lot.” Kings of Concrete takes place on Sat 25 + Sun 26 July. Unfortunately this is nearly all the information the organisers want to share with us and it is appalling. Dublin City’s web site doesn’t provide ANY details and doesn’t even link to the dedicated website www.kingsofconcrete.com. This dedicated website promises a lot and doesn’t deliver. Apart from timings for the skateboard competition no other competition timings or any other useful information is provided. Dublin City runs GREAT events and I hope this will continue, but maybe they should get someone to advise them on how to get the word out to the masses! I am available and not expensive at all! :-) From information I gleaned, I would expect that the event starts at 11:30 and goes until 19:00 or 20:00. I was at the Kings of Concrete last year and will definitely be there again this year, but I wish they could tell us what is happening when!
Somewhere I found “During the day we have workshops for the kids and loads of competitions with some killer prizes.”, but no information about the workshops (when, where, what) or about the completions is available anywhere.
The Amphitheatre at the Civic Office is behind Christ Church Cathedral between Christ Church and the Liffey or on the Western End of the Civic Office site.
One last comment, it is possible that I am unfair to Dublin City. The number of references to micromedia.ie and the lack of references to dublincity.ie makes me wonder. But if micromedia.ie are responsible then what does that say about micromedia?

SUMMER OF HERITAGE – DUN LAOGHAIRE – RATHDOWN
Dun Laoghaire – Rathdown is inviting to a number of sites and locations in their “Summer of Heritage” between 15 June and mid September, free guided tours are provided in Cabinteely House, Marlay House, Deansgrange Cemetery, the Obelisk on Killiney Hill and the Oratory on Library Road in Dún Laoghaire. Many guided tours will take place on Saturdays and Thursdays. The brochure with all the information is here: www.dlrevents.ie/pdfs/HeritageBooklet.pdf

CHILDREN’S PUPPET SHOW – CITY CENTRE
The Dublin City Business Improvement District (BID) is bringing free entertainment for kids to the city this Summer with free Puppet Shows for children as part of its BIDs for KIDs Summer Programme. Taking place in Arnotts, Henry Street, and the Powerscourt Shopping Centre every weekend in July, the Dublin City BID is providing a fun and interesting way for kids and families to spend a few hours in the city this July.
Renowned puppeteer Conor Lambert will entertain and create drama with his unique (Dublin) adaptation of ‘Punch & Judy’. Follow a very naughty Mr.Punch as he is left with the task of minding the house while Judy gets busy with other important chores. Mr. Punch’s inability to take on the simplest of chores leads to hilarious consequences involving the Gardai!
With three shows each day, running for 45 minutes each, Mr Punch will actively encourage children to get involved as he goes about his chores.
The sessions are free but pre-booking is essential as spaces are limited. Please phone the Dublin City BID on 01-6334680 or email bidsforkids@dublincitybid.ie to reserve a space. See www.dublincitybid.ie for more information.
Puppet Show Details:
1st Show: 12:30-13:15
2nd Show: 14:00-14:45
3rd Show: 15:30-16:15
each Saturday (in Arnotts) and Sunday (in Powerscourt Shopping Centre) throughout July. www.powerscourtcentre.com/news-and-events/free-childrens-puppet-shows-in-dublin-city-centre/

STITCH – KNITTING CAFÉ – SUMMER TEA PARTY
Kellie Dalton who runs “Stitch”, a knitting café in 74 Shantalla Road, Beaumont, Dublin 9 informed me about their Summer Tea Party in association with Barrys Tea this Saturday from 13:00-17:00 to celebrate the launch of their new online shop. There will be free knitting lessons and ‘Knitting Surgery’ for anyone having trouble with their works in progress. Knitters, beginners, friends and family are welcome. There’ll be tea and cake for all as well as a 10% discount on all wool. www.stitchireland.com/ If you know that you will be going, drop them a brief mail (info@stitch.ie) so that they can plan a bit, but if you don’t know yet, feel free to just come along on the day.

BANDSLAM – DUNDRUM “TOWN” CENTRE

LAZY BAND – BEWLEY’S CAFÉ THEATRE
It was confirmed to me that this event is still taking place and a number of people commented in a very positive way. Unfortunately I haven’t experienced it myself yet, but it seems that it is an event worth recommending.
A new event has been happening on Monday nights (every Monday night) in Bewley’s Cafe Theatre, 78 Grafton Street. The recently-formed music collective called the ‘Lazy Band’ is playing roots, trad and folk songs from Ireland, England, America and anything else they like. Admission is free and the bar serves during the show. Some people order up pizzas from downstairs. Laid-back atmosphere, unplugged and informal, and worth a visit! The event starts at 20:00 and goes until 22:00.

SOULPOWER – LIVING ROOM
SoulPower, a really great funk soul tribute band, is a must see! I know them well and I can’t recommend them highly enough. This 8 piece band play the music of all the great soul artists, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Charles Wright and many more. The lead singer is amazing and all the band members are hugely talented and experienced. So if you are feeling funky, get yourself down to the Living Room (formerly the Bleu Note) every Thursday from 21:30. Admission is free. DUN LAOGHAIRE FESTIVAL OF WORLD CULTURE
Is this Festival in your calendar? It will take place at the end of August. So there is another bit of time, but it is THE must-go event in greater Dublin for me – make sure you don’t miss it. The website is up and you can already check out the programme. The festival will take place on 29+30 August and I guess we are hugely lucky this year that it has not been affected by budget cuts. Who knows if there will be enough money to bring it back in 2010. festivalofworldcultures.com/

YOU HAVE TOO MUCH MONEY? – RYANAIR CAN HELP
Ryanair announced yesterday that since the launch one month ago 100,000 customers have used the text Message service whereby your booking confirmation number will be sent to you by SMS. In my opinion that is a totally unnecessary service because I can use a pen and write the number down OR I could type a note in my own mobile phone. In addition not having to print the booking confirmation doesn’t help much if you have to use online check-in and then still need to PRINT the boarding card. The puzzling thing is that each of these 100,000 customers was prepared to pay EUR 1 for such a service, because getting sent the Booking Confirmation Number is charged by Ryanair with a EUR 1 fee. Sorted by country these are the countries where people have too much money: Italy (16%), UK (15%), Spain (12%) and Ireland (5%).www.irishpressreleases.ie/2009/07/23/100000-passengers-opt-for-sms-confirmations-in-its-1st-month/

GOVERNMENT WAKE UP!!
Have you seen or at least heard of snoozing TDs who sit in the parliament and catch up on a few precious minutes of sleep? Quite shocking, I know. But could it get worse? Yep! Here is a story that proves it.
A new piece of the M6 is finished (between Athlone and Ballinsaloe) and is meant to be motorway. However the Minister of Transport (Noel Dempsey) hasn’t signed the required order in time! – Was he asleep?
For this reason the street can NOT be a motorway but will be a National Road. However in 28 days the street can finally get promoted to a motorway, as the orders are signed now. Apart from waste due to the cost for changing all the speed limit and other signs, it is hugely embarrassing that a Department that is focused solely on transport seemingly can’t even get their core business under control. Will the same sleepiness be there when more important issues, for example regarding the economic recovery, be discussed? Very odd! www.rte.ie/news/2009/0723/roads.html

—————–
Have a great weekend! Enjoy U2 if you are going and feel free to be totally unaffected by the U2 hype if you are not going to a concert, (Why are people so in awe (i.e. amazed and excited) about this massive stage? I thought people are going for the songs+music? ;-) )

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.
If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via the same e-mail address.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby. However, I won’t say No to donations ;-) and if you want to help me with the running of it (no minimum amount!) just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the word “Donation” in the subject and I will reply with a link that will allow you to make your donation by PayPal or per credit card or follow the link just above this section. Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the former fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until the beginning of 2009 in pubs and other venues.
