Hi all!
As mentioned last week, I am away again this weekend and just about got this Dublin Event Guide out to you. It was touch and go and I am working on it already for three loooong nights. I would say that it is about 95% there not the 80% that I expected last week to be the best I can do, but I spent more (too much) time on it. Now it is time to enjoy my holidays.
[ad]
The Big 500 Share is still running and not one person donated again last week. We are still far far away from the target, but we got nearly EUR 400 for the two charities. That is a respectable amount! The Dublin Event Guide (and the charities still needs a LOT of support if you can help! Please check it out in the Dublin News and don’t forget that you will get a free “Secret Dublin” Guide Book if you help!!! ;-)
And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared (or able) to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for web hosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 69,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 69,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week the Feel Good Slot brings you another quote. It is from an unknown source and says:
Discipline is just choosing between what you want now and what you want most.
have you been in that situation? You want to lose weight, but the piece of chocolate cake in front of you is sooo tempting? What did you choose? If you made any decision between the two options, you know what discipline is. ;-) …and you know if you have it or not. :-P

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week my picks are happening outside of Ireland: I am on holidays and will let you select your preferred events without my help! :-)

Ireland’s Got Curves – Ticket Competition
Sun 09 April – 11:00-16:00 ALSAA Dublin, Old Airport Road, Dublin Airport, Co. Dublin (next to RED Car Park)
On 09 April everything Plus Size will come together for the “Ireland’s Got Curves” event near the airport. There will be Fashion Shows, Workshops, Demos, Guest Speakers, Pop-up Shops, Awards, Entertainment for women of all sizes and shapes from Size 12 and above.
Tickets will be EUR 10 but the Early Bird Ticket Sale has started and if you buy already now you only pay EUR 5 via the Eventbrite site here.
To spread the word, the organisers have made some tickets available for a competition in the Dublin Event Guide and they have asked me to give a pair of tickets away every week from now until the event. So this will be an ongoing competition for a little while with a deadline every Thursday at 13:00 until I run out of tickets. ;-) To enter the competition send a mail with subject IRLELANDCURVES to dublineventguide@gmail.com and out your full name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. You can re-enter the competition every week if you haven’t won in the previous week.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
Or when you buy from eBay or you want to buy holidays or clothes or anything else, check first
www.dublineventguide.com/shop
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

The Big 500 Share!!
With the 500th edition of the Dublin Event Guide nine weeks ago, we launched “The Big 500 Share”. It is a fundraising campaign for the Dublin Event Guide (70%) and for two charities (30%) and everyone who donates will also get a gift (My new “Secret Dublin” Guide Book which will be completed very soon and will contain information about TEN near-secret destinations in Dublin.)
You can now donate via www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide but keep reading for more details if you have time.
The amount needed for the Dublin Event Guide in 2014 is EUR 3400 (EUR 2400 to send the weekly e-mail magazine and at least EUR 1000 to fix parts of the smartphone app and to improve the website.) So the closer we come to this, the better, but until today, we managed to raise EUR 1200. 400 Euro of that will go to the charities and the rest will just cover the Dublin Event Guide cost for 4 months. So your help is STILL needed!!! Not a single cent was donated last week, so we are not making any progress. :-(
You can donate now via this link: www.paypal.me/DublinEventGuide and if PayPal doesn’t work for you send me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com with subject “The Big 500 Share”) and I will suggest alternatives. Thanks for your support!!!!
The two charities that you have chosen in a public vote are the Alzheimer’s Association and the Homeless charity “Peter McVerry Trust”.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Humans Need Not Apply – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 25 Mar
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The exhibition “Humans Need Not Apply” (10 Feb – 14 May) in the Science Gallery is looking at the influence robots will have on our society, on our lives and on jobs. How will robots replace humans? How can robots be creative? And is automation maybe going too far?
About 27 exhibits will ask and answer these questions. When you come into the exhibition space in the Science Gallery the little desk lamp robot Pinokio will greet you with all its friendliness and curiosity (that’s MY interpretation of Pinokio’s behaviour). And the three Doppelgänger robots upstairs will move, even dance with you. But more robots and automation will also have possibly some negative effects and “The Great Disengagement” looks at how we human beings might rebel against robots when they have taken our jobs and more away.
The exhibition has many many facets and it is extremely interesting. There are fascinating and intriguing exhibits and maybe more unexpected ones like the “tickle robot”. I strongly recommend the exhibition and can definitely say that it is suitable for ALL ages, even younger kids can get something out of it.
Use the help of the amazing mediators, who can explain everything you see, especially if you don’t want to read all the explanations that are next to every exhibit.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Wintertime -> Summertime
07:00, Sun 26 Mar
Dublin (various locations)
Last night the clock changed again from Wintertime to Summertime and hopefully you remembered that. At this time of the year, the clock goes FORWARD by one hour, so that means you lost an hour of sleep last night. Booo! But the evenings are now much longer than before. Yeahhh!! ;-)
There are still lots of discussions about the sense or nonsense of the twice yearly time change, but hey, all these discussions don’t matter today: You have to get with it, otherwise you will be late or early or just wrong :-) until October.
If you have a clock in your house or apartment, you need put it forward by one hour. BUT do NOT do that to your phone! If last night you went to bed not changing anything on your phone and you wake up just now checking the time, then the good news is that the time is MOST LIKELY correct. Smartphones are smart enough to know that the time changed. So hopefully you didn’t touch the phone.
And now? Check all the other clocks (and the also the clock/timer for the immersion!) and adjust them and then enjoy the great day and make use of the brighter evening.

Mother’s Day
08:00, Sun 26 Mar
Dublin (various locations)
If you are Irish, British or American you should know that the first Sunday in March is Mother’s Day (some call it Mothering Sunday, which sounds a bit odd to me). But if you are from any other country, you might celebrate Mother’s Day in May.
I suggest, no matter where you are from, just tell your mother – if possible – what she means to you and if you can’t tell her, do something special to celebrate/remember her.
Yes, Mother’s Day has – like Valentine’s Day – become a very commercial day, but you don’t HAVE to join in the exact same way. You can hand make a card (yes, even guys can do that!! ;-) ) or just show your appreciation in a non-commercialised way.
By the way, I prefer to widen the scope of the day to current and future mothers and all women/ladies/girls that have looked after children at any point. We should thank them all!

Humans Need Not Apply – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 26 Mar

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
12:00 – 16:30, Sun 26 Mar
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October 2016. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 12:00 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

The Moving Image as Limited Edition – Talk – Plastik Festival
16:00, Sun 26 Mar
Temple Bar Gallery + Studios, 5-9 Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Writer and critic Erika Balsom will give a presentation about her research for her upcoming publication “After Uniqueness – A History of Film and Video Art in Circulation.”
“The sale of artists’ film and video as limited editions on the art market is an increasingly dominant form of distribution, displacing both the rental model of the co-ops and the sale of un-editioned works. The moving image, with its ability to be copied, once challenged the idea that the work of art was founded in uniqueness. The editioning model overturns this: it restricts reproducibility, thereby transforming the moving image into a quasi-unique object.”
Admission is free, but booking is required via the Eventbrite link below.
PLASTIK is a platform for the engagement and appreciation of artists’ moving image in Ireland. The festival offers an innovative, accessible and creative environment for the presentation of artists’ film and video, with a focus on discursive events and the cinema as exhibition space.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Britain and Ireland are SEPARATE countries! Northern Ireland Border to return?
It is just a few more days until Britain will declare its departure from the European Union. A totally nonsensical move in my eyes, but (happily!?) mislead by some populist politicians like Nigel Farage and too arrogant to consider that it could all end in a disaster, the British old people and (uneducated?) lower class is forcing Britain to take its hat in March 2019 and say Goodbye to the EU.
(In a pre-poll survey of the Independent, 21% of people below the age of 26 voted for Brexit compared with 69% of people over the age of 65. And 64% of graduates were planning to vote to remain compared with only 25% of people with no formal qualifications at all. Source: www.independent.co.uk)
Some people in Ireland think that without Britain in the EU, Ireland will be in trouble, others hate the EUR for a variety of reasons and others again don’t care much about the EU and the opportunities that it should provide to Irish businesses because they put (nearly) ALL their focus on selling their goods to Britain and ignoring the 25 other markets in the EU.
Nobody knows what the outcome will be. It will probably take another 10 years until we do know and by then, many of the people who caused Britain’s exit will not be around anymore. :-O
Apart from the economic impact, there is one question causing distress in Ireland and it is a surprising issue: It is the question about the border to Northern Ireland.
I am well aware of the historic circumstances, the 800+ years of occupation of Ireland, the Anglo-Irish Treaty from 1921 and the “Troubles”, which were a lot more than just “troubles”, but no matter what your political preferences are you have to accept that by international law, Northern Ireland is part of Britain and NOT part of Ireland. You might want to change that and that wish/goal/preference is absolutely legitimate, But any change needs to follow formal procedures until it becomes reality.
With that in mind, I can understand why people in Ireland don’t WANT to have a border again between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, but I can’t see a single reason why there shouldn’t be a border once Britain leaves the European Union and as long as Northern Ireland remains part of Britain.
The fact that both countries are on the same land mass, is definitely not enough of a reason. The history? Not enough of a reason either!
The area I come from in Germany was for a while French, then German, then French again and it is German for a long time but only about 20 minutes by car from the French border. The same happened – in reverse – to the area close to the border in the French side. German, then French, then German and now French. The change in “ownership” always happened through occupation. Both parts were separated by a border until the European Union tore down borders through the Schengen Agreement. But if Germany or France left the European Union, it would be totally normal and understandable that a border with check points etc would be re-built.
Why should the situation be difference between Ireland and Northern Ireland?
Yes, I get it, some think that Northern Ireland SHOULD be or OUGHT to be part of Ireland, but that is as wrong as if you think your neighbours house SHOULD be yours. It will be yours once you agree to it OR the courts decide that your neighbour took the house from you illegally and has to give it back. But until that formal process is completed, it is owned by someone else.
