Hi all!

Dublin Event Guide 490!! Only 10 weeks away from the big birthday. I wonder if I should think about something special for the 500th edition. Any ideas? Let me know! :-)

[ad]

It is a busy week with lots of events, but with no big headline events. So a good time to explore something new. Well, the first Christmas Market is happening already this week and there will be lots more from now on.

And the Dublin Event Guide is late again. This time I had a completely new problem. My server was not reacting for ages this morning. There is always something to keep things interesting.

I publish again in two stages: First on the smartphone app and on the website, then more events will be added and in about 2 hours the mail will be sent.

This is the FINAL version.

Last week there were three so for November we now need to find EUR 170. The start is made, but it is a lot still and not a huge amount of time. If you can help in any way, your help will be VERY much appreciated!! Make a difference here!

++++

And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot is a short video clip of a conversation between a young boy and an older man. Really sweet and interesting! Check it out here:

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Stephen S, Darren McG and Jutta B-S were the wonderful people helped the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks soooo much! I really appreciate your help and donations will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

It is a quiet weekend this week: Many events, but no big headline events. So, I suggest a game today: Pick a random event for Saturday and Sunday and go to it. That way, you might discover something completely new and who knows, it could become a new interest! Stretch your horizon! :-)

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Chrismas Markets are starting

The first Christmas Market in 2016 takes place this weekend already. It is definitely much too early for me, but maybe some of you can’t wait to get the Christmas Shopping done asap? If you are not in the mood yet, either go to get in the mood OR stay away so that you won’t get annoyed.

The first Christmas Light ceremony in Dublin is on the following weekend, on 13 November. Still much too early, but Christmas is early this year! Because Christmas Eve is on a Saturday, the first of advent is already on 27 November.

Magzine Fort in Phoenix Park – News!

After many many years of being boarded up and completely inaccessible, the OPW decided this summer to run guided tours in the Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park. Initially tours on Friday and Sunday were planned until the end of October. Three tours per day with a max of 20 people per tour. Soon it turned out that this was not enough and it was extended to four tours per day.

The end of October came and the interest was still high and a great decision was made: The tours will continue through the winter months!! They will be reduced to one day per week, but that is absolutely fine. The continuation is much appreciated and I strongly recommend that you take the opportunity. Tickets are limited to 20 per tour and you have to get your ticket in the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on the day. Pre-booking is not possible.

The Sunday tours through the winter months are at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30. And you find all details at www.phoenixpark.ie/visitorinformation/magazinefort/#d.en.36668

First City Centre Pubs for Wetherspoon?

The cheap-drink pub chain Wetherspoon from the UK is working hard on getting permission for two City Centre pubs in Dublin.

One location is in Camden Street and is a former homeless hostel that is in a total dilapidated state for quit some time. Wetherspoon bought it two years ago and planned to turn it into a hotel and pub but was battling objections for a while until Dublin City Council now granted planning permission for a multi-million Euro renovation of the place.

The second site is in Lower Abbey Street, where they bought the former Permanent TSB bank, a building that is from the 1830s, (beside the National Lottery building) and the neighbouring former Baptist Chapel of a similar age. It will take another while until planning for these two sites will be approved.

The Irish Times reported about these two sites here.

Good-Bye JJ Smyth!

It has been confirmed now that JJ Smyth’s in Aungier Street, Dublin’s only dedicated Jazz and Blues live venue has been sold and will close this month. It seems that the last day might be 20 November. The venue will re-open – probably after extensive renovations – but it will not be a live music venue anymore as it seems.

Sad to see another live music venue go and for Jazz fans and Jazz musicians it is even more painful because they are now kinda homeless.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to give recommendations, tips & tricks on how to organise and run good events. Eventbrite is the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and their support is very much appreciated! All information in this section is supplied by Eventbrite.

8 SIMPLE TIPS TO PROMOTE YOUR EVENT OFFLINE
The Internet makes everything so much easier nowadays, including marketing. When it comes to event promotion, however, the need to diversify your approach shouldn’t be ignored, as different demographics can respond really well to that offline touch (including Millennials). Promoting your event offline just might give you that extra bit of leverage to get your attendance numbers up, so here are 8 different options for you to consider.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Dublin Remembers: Stories from the Somme

22 Oct – 23 Dec (Mon-Thu 10:00-20:00, Fri+Sat: 10:00-17:00)

Dublin City Library & Archive, 138 Pearse Street, Dublin 2

This exhibition focuses on personal stories of individual Irish men who fought at the Battle of the Somme from July – November 1916 (mainly serving with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers). Some were killed, others injured and the ones who survived unscathed returned to an Ireland which was radically different following the Easter Rising in April 1916.

The exhibition includes photographs, medals, uniforms and other original artefacts – including audio recordings from selected letters and diaries from soldiers describing life in the trenches to loved ones back home. Interview footage from the RTÉ Archives provides further eye-witness testimony.

Alchemist Dreaming – Amanda Cullen

03-10 November (Mon-Fri: 10:00-17:00, Sat+Sun: Closed)

The Copper House, Synge Street, Dublin 8

The Copper House will show “Alchemist Dreaming”, an exhibition of works by Amanda Cullen.

Her paintings/drawings look interesting and intriguing. The description of the exhibition however doesn’t explain much apart from the fact that she was influenced by her shamanic dance practice and by finding her soulmate when she created the art works.

Admission is free.

Little Stories, Little Prints – Exhibition

see below

Libraries in Dublin

Fifty Printmakers from eight printmaking studios around Ireland were invited by The Leinster Printmaking Studio, Clane, Co. Kildare to create ‘little prints’ on ‘little known events or incidents’ during or around the time of the 1916 Rising and the exhibition will tour the Dublin Libraries in 2016.

Each library displaying the exhibition will host a workshop in basic printmaking. Participants will be invited to illustrate an incident/artefact of their choice. A small selection of the resulting work may be added to the website and may be included in the display in the library. Please check with the library for date and time of their respective workshop.

The schedule for 2016 is

+ March and April 2016 – Central Library
+ May 2016 – Rathmines Library
+ June 2016 – Walkinstown Library
+ November 2016 – Dublin City Library and Archive
+ December 2016 -Finglas Library

Tayto Crisp Sandwich Shop – Launch

09:00, Sat 05 Nov

Arnott’s, Henry Street, Dublin 2

As a non-Irish and non-British person, crisp sandwiches are to me just plain wrong and nothing can justify putting fried potatoes on a piece of white toast (and that includes Chip Butties by the way!).

BUT Tayto thinks that they will be extremely popular and they are therefore opening a Pop-up shop on Saturday in Arnott’s that sells four flavours of Crisp Sandwiches (for EUR 3 each). The shop will stay open until Christmas Eve.

Admission in the shop is free ;-) but that is where the “free” side ends.

Design and Violence – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 05 Nov

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The exhibition “Design and Violence” (14 Oct – 22 Jan) in the Science Gallery is an exhibition of objects and systems at the intersection of design and violence. Violence in this context has different faces. It is deliberate harm caused to a person or thing, but also an unintended consequence in other scenarios. Design is the intended creation of things, but also the unintended consequence.

It is a very very interesting exhibition! A good bit darker than other Science Gallery exhibitions because every exhibit has some form of threat inherent in it, but definitely an exhibition I recommend. Some exhibits are self-explanatory, but all come with descriptive and explanatory labels. In addition there are the amazing mediators, who explain and help through the exhibition. I was so lucky to get a guided tour of the whole exhibition by lead mediator Ryan and he is absolutely outstanding. Hugely knowledgeable, interested and interesting and extremely friendly and helpful. Don’t hesitate to ask the mediators they are there to help!

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, “Design and Violence” is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but due to the topic, I would say that younger children need parental guidance and you could decide to go into less detail about some objects.

From a chair that has to be created by the buyer through bashing a steel cube into shape with a sledgehammer, via all sort of violence that was shown in children’s cartoons “Looney Toons” or pressure sensitive clothing for wheel-chair users to show injury and trauma to an AK-47 rifle and instructions how to torture, the ground floor area sets the scene for a varied way of looking at violence and design. But it gets even more interesting upstairs: A printed gun, a drone survival guide, hacked protest objects, an interesting race and skin colour photo archive, Desert War simulation, a virtual reality installation about the threats refugees need to navigate through and a landmine display….are just some of the exhibits

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Admission is free.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour

10:00 – 16:30, Sun 06 Nov

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, guided tours were provided and were meant to run for three months until end of October. But the interest was so great that the OPW decided to continue the tours even through the winter months, They will take place every Sunday at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

“The contrast between the apparent indifference (hostility even) of the public response to the Rising of Easter 1916 with the landslide victory of Sinn Féin in the general election of December 1918 seems to bear out the famous lines of W.B.Yeats. But was the change as dramatic as it seemed or the result of ‘a long gestation’? And if there was a change what were the developments that led to it?”

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Pay Demands – The start of an unstable and damaging period?

It started all with the LUAS Drivers who demanded a crazy increase in their salaries. They didn’t get what they wanted, but they got an increase. Next were the Dublin Bus Drivers, then the Gardai and in the meantime the TDs got also a nice increase of about 9,000 per year. Then the teachers. And they will all get less than they want, but importantly, they will get SOME increase.

With all this, is it a surprise that suddenly EVERYONE in the public sector wants more money? But is it justified? Or justifiable? On Friday FIVE (!!!) more unions announced that they will be looking for pay increases as the Irish Times reported here.

Many think that some of the pay increase demands are totally out of control, but in other areas it might make more sense. The problem however is that once the unions smell “blood” they will go after pay increases like a bloodhound. Justified or not!

Keep in mind that NOBODY needs a union unless there is a dispute, so it is very much in their interest to create a dispute! It justifies their existence and keep the union bosses in a very well paid job.

Any type of unrest is bad for the competitiveness of a country and damages the reputation. So it is in the interest of Ireland to sort out all unrest as fast as possible. An unstable period would be severely damaging in the context of attracting new investment from abroad. But it also doesn’t make sense to give in all cases. Where the salaries are too low, they should be increased, but where unions demand unjustifiable increases, the government should have the courage to refuse ANY increase.

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
