Hi all!
This Dublin Event Guide comes to you from a rather unusual place!! And I am describing the whole story and picture in the Dublin News section today. Just look for the last News item in that section to find out why I am reaching out to you from the top of a mountain in Italy today.
[ad]
I decided to complete it and then send it instead of publishing it in two stages and it is finished!
The new month has started and with some donations last week – THANKS! – we are down to EUR 150 that have to be found before the end of October. So if you can help in any way, your help will be VERY much appreciated!!! Make a difference here!
++++
And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot quote is by T. Harv Eker. Many have never heard his name, but he has been around for a while and he has developed a training course called “Millionaire Mind Intensive” and has written the book “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind”.
Money will only make you more of what you already are. – T Harv Eker
So if you are unhappy, afraid, insecure, or feel unworthy, then money will only make things worse. But if you change your thinking, then you also change your ability to get money.
T Harv Eker continues and says:
If your motivation for acquiring money or success comes from a non-supportive root such as fear, anger, or the need to ‘prove’ yourself, your money will never bring you happiness.
—————
I have been at the “Millionaire Mind Intensive” training course in London a few years back and really enjoyed it. There are some super powerful learnings in it and while you might not automatically become a millionaire ;-), your financial life will definitely change for the better if you apply some of the learnings of the course and change your mindset.
For many years the event industry has overlooked Ireland and only ran interesting courses in the UK, but luckily they have discovered that we are still there and this is one of still very few full, but low-priced training courses that will be run in Ireland again.
T Harv Eker has given up the teaching business for health reasons, instead Doug Clark one of the Lead Trainers will be in Dublin.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Daniel E, Olivia C, Nora O’K, Joan S and David O’K were so great to help the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your help! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
The Hard Working Class Heroes Festival is this weekend’s music highlight on Saturday and on Sunday this is followed by the (unrelated) Dublin Busker Fleadh.
The Fusion Sundays World Culture Market is on Sunday and is always worth a visit.
On Thursday, the next Science Gallery exhibition opens and on Friday “Open House” starts.

Alice in Wonderland – Ice Show – Ticket Competition
Thur-Sun 24-27 November 2016
National Show Centre, Swords
Last chance to enter this competition:
Not just one but two amazing shows are coming to Dublin in November. “Alice in Wonderland on Ice” and “Dracula on Ice” will be performed in the National Show Centre by Russia’s Ice Vision performers from 24-27 November and it will be a unique opportunity to see these professional Russian Skaters performing the shows. Ice Vision is based in St. Petersburg and they will be the very first time in Ireland. Have a look at the Dublin News section this week, to find out even more.
Tickets are already available on Ticketmaster and I expect that this event will sell out soon because it is so unique. Go to www.ticketmaster.ie/Alice-In-Wonderland-On-Ice-tickets/artist/5200464 to find tickets for Alice in Wonderland (afternoon performances) and for Dracula on Ice tickets (evening performance), go to www.ticketmaster.ie/Dracula-On-Ice-tickets/artist/5200466.
The organisers of these two events gave me a pair of tickets for the “Alice in Wonderland” show on Thursday 24 November at 15:30 and if you want to win this pair of tickets, you will have to send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with ALICE in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. In addition you need to include the name of the city where the Ice Vision Production Company is based. The original deadline to enter this competition was 05 October, but there has been so much interest, that I will give oyu another chance to enter: Your mail now has to be with me by 13 October.

You provide the prize for the competition and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) runs the competition for you. It couldn’t be simpler.
And if you want me to use/test a product you are selling and then share my assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing gear. ;-)

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin Event Guide sent to you from Italy
For the first time in the 9-year existence I was not in Ireland for the whole preparation time of this Dublin Event Guide. Instead I compiled it and sent it from my holidays in Italy.
It was a challenge! Where I am, on top of a mountain in a tiny village south of Rome, the Internet connection is unreliable and phone connectivity is non existent. But I managed to get the whole Event Guide written and you won’t miss out on any of the events.
The Dublin News section, however, I didn’t fill with all the news I found. It was sacrificed to some additional holiday time for me and I hope you understand.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Seditious Types, Legacy of the Printers of 1916 – Exhibition
07 May – October (Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, Sat+Sun 14:00-17:00, closed bank holiday weekends)
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush Barracks, Haddington Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.
Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This ‘mosquito press’ circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.

Books Are My Bag is a nationwide campaign to celebrate bookshops in a collaboration between publishers, bookshops and authors to remind people of the pleasures of books and bookshops. 56% of all book-buying decisions are made by consumers in a bookshop, but we must continue to celebrate and shop in city street bookshops, if we don’t want them to disappear.
In previous years, some bookshops ran special “Books Are My Bag” events, but I wasn’t able to find a list of events this year.

Proclamation – Film Screening
14:00 – 15:30, Sat 08 Oct
National Gallery, Clare Street, Dublin 2
Proclamation is a project by visual artist Andrew Duggan. I don’t understand what it entails, but this event is a film screening about this project.
This is the original (for me cryptic) description:
“Proclamation, is a multi-venue exhibition of new lens-based and moving-image works by leading figures in Irish visual art, dance, and performance, engaging with the centenary of the 1916 Rising, redefining definitions of ‘proclamation’ and what it is ‘to proclaim’. The commissioned works have interrogated existing artworks held at The National Gallery of Ireland.”
Followed by a Q&A Session with featured artists Anthony Haughey and Andrew Duggan
Admission is free, but booking is required via the website below.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00 – 16:30, Sun 09 Oct
Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.
In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.
Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.
Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.
Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.
I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 09 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Blast: International Critics’ Forum – Dublin Theatre Festival Discussion
15:00 – 16:00, Tue 11 Oct
Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
The space for engaging with performance is shrinking. Critical coverage is disappearing, star ratings just won’t cut it, and online sharing is simply a speedy and cost effective way of talking only to ourselves.
The makers of Blast, a new platform for conversations about Irish theatre, will host a critical discussion about the context for this year’s work, its impact and the talking points of the festival.
Bringing together Irish and international critics, this forum considers performance from several angles and welcomes audience feedback.
Admission is free, but booking is required via the website below.

Working on a Cure for Arthritis – Talk
19:30, Thu 13 Oct
Tercentenary Hall, Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute, 152-160 Pearse Street, Dublin 2
This is a special lecture by Arthritis Ireland’s principal researchers including Professor Gerry Wilson, Professor Ursula Fearon and Dr. Charlene Foley on their “Plans for life-changing research” to find a cure for arthritis.
Professor Gerry Wilson, Chair of Rheumatology, and his team in UCD have identified a new protein (C5orf30) which regulates the severity of tissue damage caused by rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Following the discovery, RA patients most likely to suffer the severest effects of the condition can now be identified early and fast-tracked to the more aggressive treatments available.
Professor Fearon, Chair of Molecular Rheumatology TCD, is concentrating her research on developing state-of-the-art basic research techniques and applying them to high quality bio-banked samples to examine the mechanisms of disease in arthritis with the aim of advancing our understanding of the causes of arthritis, predicting the response to therapy and ultimately predicting who can achieve remission while potentially identifying exciting new targets for novel therapies.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour
10:00 – 16:30, Fri 14 Oct

Open House Dublin
11:00, Fri 14 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
The yearly Open House Dublin event is organised by the Irish Architecture Foundation and it gives you an opportunity to visit buildings that you normally would never get access to on a guided tour that focuses on the architecture of the building and the reasons behind why it was build the way it is.
Open House Dublin starts already on Friday with a small number of tours/locations and the main days follow on Saturday and Sunday.
Admission is free to all buildings and a full list of participating venues can be found here: www.openhousedublin.com/index.php/listings
Some of the venues gave out tickets on a lottery basis only and the tickets are all given out now. Many other locations are running tours throughout the day and while you might have to queue for a little you will get in – unless you arrive too late in the day.
I strongly recommend this event, it is really great to get a chance to explore some of Dublin’s (iconic) buildings and to hear why the architects did what they did.

It is organised by Discover Poland, the Polish Chaplaincy the Polish Embassy in Dublin and there will be speakers from Poland, Ireland, Italy and Denmark.
All details can be found on kosciol-dublin.pl/ireland/link-1/events/jubilee-celebrations/glendelough-conference/
Unfortunately the organisers don’t state if the event is free or not. I have some reason to believe that it might be free, but I strongly recommend that you check with Andrew Trala on 0873218721.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Odd behaviour of Ryanair passengers? Are they all beginners?
I haven’t used Ryanair for a while. Not because I have a problem with the company, but because they decided to stop flying to where I would like to go in Germany, so I had to go back using Aer Lingus. But this week I flew to Italy and Rome Ciampino was the most suitable airport to fly to. Ryanair flies there and the prices were ok, so we were in business.
Last time I flew with Ryanair they didn’t have any seat allocation yet, but it was a first come, first served approach when you get into the plane. That has changed now and you get seats allocated or (for a surcharge) can select them yourself. The consequence of this is that EVERY single person entering that plane knows exactly that there is a seat waiting for them and they know exactly where this seat is.
So can anybody explain the secnario in this picture to me? Why do approximately 150 people jump up from their seat as if someone has put needles under their backside as soon as boarding of this plane is even hinted?
Everybody has a seat asigned, so what do you gain by standing there for 10 minutes before the hinted boarding actually starts? Why do people still jump up as if it was a first come, first served seat allocation?
Is it just the space for the hand luggage that gets them to be mad impatient? We got on board as one of the last ones and there was still space for hand luggage.
Human beings are the most irrational species it seems! ;-)

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
