Hi all!

Did you enjoy Culture Night? I did!! As always it was a night FULL of great events. positivity in the City and cultural pursuits in all flavours and colours. An absolutely outstanding event!! And like many, I often wish it took place more than just once a year.

[ad]

Because I could not miss Culture Night under any circumstances (I hope you understand that! :-) ), approximately 6 hours of my Friday evening were not filled with work on the Dublin Event Guide, but instead with me enjoying the music, exhibitions and entertainment in the City Centre. An unfortunate lack of dedication and focus, I know ;-) and this will have you suffering this week because the Dublin Event Guide is – again – late! Apologies! But here it is and hopefully you will still get some benefit from it.

I have posted the first Facebook update as early as possible again today, so that you know at least the headline events. And I will use the two-stage publishing process for this Dublin Event Guide again: First I will update the smartphone app and the website, then I will add more events and once all is completed, the e-mail will be sent to you.

This is the FINAL edition.

++++

The month is more than half over, but I still need to find EUR 90 to cover the bills for September. I need your help with that, so if you can help in any way, your help will also be VERY much appreciated!!! Make a difference here!

And here is my weekly appeal: The Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help in two areas: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail at dublineventguide@gmail.com if you prefer to pay by bank transfer. Corporate or enterprise sponsors are very welcome too and will get a bundle of benefits as a thank you for their donation, contact me on sponsorship@dublineventguide.com to discuss the details.

And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. Send your friends to www.dublineventguide.com where they can subscribe as well.

————————–

More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket at all you can help the Dublin Event Guide! Just use the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the banner ads in other sections as often as possible when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this publication (for example for Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), then you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime.
This is how it works: The company you buy from will give a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide as a thanks for pointing you in their direction. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if many of you did it every time you buy something online, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Importantly, you do not pay more, but the merchant accepts a slightly smaller profit. So clicking on these ads is helping everybody! Thanks!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s Feel Good Slot quote is for the leader in you:

Leaders don’t create Followers, they create more Leaders! – Tom Peters

Tom Peters is an American Business Writer and he makes a good point. As a good leader, you create and support and empower. The flipside is being a boss. A boss surpresses creativity, independent thinkinng and initiative. Be a leader!! ;-)

By the way, if you like these quotes and would like to see more of them, follow me on twitter at www.twitter.com/joergst were I post one or two motivational quotes every day. And if you are on Twitter anyway, also follow the Dublin Event Guide on Twitter at www.twitter.com/DublinEventG

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Trudi C, Eugene G, Marc F and Susan H were so great to help the Dublin Event Guide with a donation! Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your help! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend my picks are the Bluefire Festival, the National Frontline Services Day and you should also put the Sculpture in Context exhibition on your To Do list. It will be a beautiful weekend and a stroll in the National Botanic Gardens should be great.

If you are interested or not, on Sunday a good bit of focus is on the GAA Football Final. There is a public screening on Smithfield Plaza if that interests you.

On both days the Living History Weekend event at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre sounds interesting. I don’t think I will make it, but if anyone does, I would love to know how the event was. (dublineventguide@gmail.com)

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Culture Night – the good and the bad!

Actually, I am such a huge Culture Night fan, that you won’t read anything REALLY bad here. It is just such a brilliant event. I had a loose plan, nothing too fixed and I kept drifting for quite some while because I wanted to take some good pictures for the Dublin Event Guide and also report a little about the longest queues.

This was the first big surprise: While the Freemason’s Hall always has long queues (but they are very fast moving!), there was no queue at all at the Trinity Library. This must be a first in the long history of Culture Night and was caused by the only really bad thing this year: The Bus Driver strike!

I get it! Strikes are designed to hurt people that have nothing to do with the strike so that they put pressure on the employers, but in my opinion selecting Culture Night for a bus strike was a below the belt blow to families to children, to hard working people who were looking forward to the free culture Dublin has to offer on this special night.

After Trinity Library, I went to City Hall where lots of choirs were singing throughout the evening, then Temple Bar Square with lots of stop overs on the way in other venues and afterwards I went to Dublin Castle. RTE had taken over the Upper Courtyard and had built a huge stage with wonderful lighting. Getting there was a little bit of a challenge because the crowd control barriers (serpentines) were clearly built for a busier Culture Night and nobody came up with the idea that maybe it would make sense to adjust them, when significantly less people arrived. Crowd control in Ireland always seems to be driven by a pre-emptive panic and fear of visitors by the organisers. (I have lots of examples, just ask! LOL).

RTE was running a 3 hour programme on the stage with some amazing music and singing. There was also a good bit of talking and reading poems and literature readings and in my opinion that didn’t work too well in this context. See, the RTE programme was a live radio show on stage. Sounds odd? It was a little! Especially when regularly the event was interrupted by advertisement. A different structure to the event would have worked better for me and seemingly for the big crowd of people. Music always got a BIG applause, readings and poem recitals got a tiny clap.

Dublin Castle was a perfect and stunning venue for such an event and I think it is much underused during the year.

My Culture Night came to an end there, because I had a longish way back and knew that I had to do a nights long work on a Dublin Event Guide. My love for Culture Night is as strong as ever and can only hope that it continues.

Enda Kenny – the Mayo eejit?

One of a number of problems in Irish Politics is the Parish Pump politics that is done. That means that politicians care much more for there people “at home” in their constituency than for the country. As a consequence TDs (members of the National Parliament) waste time with helping Paddy to get his passport faster because he forgot to apply in time or with going to funerals of every Tom, Dick and Harry, just so that their families will vote for that politician again.

It is bad and it could relatively easily get changed, but politicians don’t like change, so we have to live with it. But you would expect that the head of the country, the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny has the interest of the country in mind as the highest priority.

We had in the context of the mess around building a new government and with the recent Apple ruling and a few other stories, quite significant events that needed a strong and decisive Taoiseach and someone who informs the people about his decisions. Did Enda Kenny speak to the nation at that time? I am not 100% sure, but I don’t think so.

This week Mayo (where he is from) is playing in a Football game. Yes, it is the final, but so what. And what does Enda Kenny do? He speaks to the nation to support his home county in a cringeworthy video, What an eejit!

Here it is: www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDmpmOy5qAk

Can we please swap him for a leader of the country?

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Voices of Memory – Walk & Talk at sound art installation

30 June – 30 Sept

National War Memorial Gardens, Islandbridge, Dublin 8

Voices of Memory is a riverside sound art installation by Christina Kubisch at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens to remember the more than 49,000 Irish people who died in the First World War. In 1923, these names were published in Irish Memorial Records 1914-1918. Consisting of eight volumes, these records, beautifully designed and illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke, are housed nearby in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens.

Almost the entire list of these names was read by volunteers of different ages and accents from across Ireland. The sound installation is based on the flow of these male and female voices playing over the bank of the river.

Admission is free. www.goethe.de/ins/ie/en/ver.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail&event_id=20767264

Seditious Types, Legacy of the Printers of 1916 – Exhibition

07 May – October (Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, Sat+Sun 14:00-17:00, closed bank holiday weekends)

National Print Museum, Beggars Bush Barracks, Haddington Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4

The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.

Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This ‘mosquito press’ circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.

Find out more details here.

But because the yearly festival is soo popular, there are at times long queues due to severe admission restrictions (quantity of people). Last year the queues already started at 17:30. Luckily around George’s Dock are more food and drink stalls so that you don’t HAVE to be in the Festival tent to enjoy the event.

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour

10:00 – 16:30, Sun 18 Sep

Magazine Fort, Phoenix Park, Dublin 8

The Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park is unusually neglected and at the same time unusually rich in history. Many have seen it as a barred off concrete fortress in a corner of Phoenix Park and even more don’t even know or have forgotten that it exists. The old Phoenix House, the home of the British Viceroy, was on the site where the fort was built from the early 17th century and then in 1734 the Fort was built and extended in 1801.

In 1916 the Fort was raided by the rebels who expected to find a lot of explosives there, but found the Fort nearly empty. In 1939 the IRA raided the Fort and stole more than a million rounds of ammunition, but most of it was recovered over the following weeks.

Since 1988, the Irish Army doesn’t use the Fort anymore and gave it back to the Office of Public Works (OPW), but not much good has happened to the Fort in the last 28 years (!!) and there were numerous speculations about the reasons for that.

Finally, this year, there will be guided tours at the Fort for three months from 31 July until the end of October. The tours take place on Sundays and Fridays at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00 and 15:30 and only 20 places are available on each tour.

Tickets are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre on a first come, first served basis and can not be pre-booked. A shuttle bus will bring the ticket holders to the Fort.

I definitely want to visit the Magazine Fort, so you will find me in the queue at some stage.

All Ireland Senior Football Final & Willy Wonka – Public Screening

13:00 – 18:00, Sun 18 Sep

Smithfield Plaza, Dublin 7

The All Ireland Senior Football Final between Dublin and Mayo on Sunday is long sold out and go get tickets you seemingly have to sell your first-born, so it makes a lot of sense to have a public screening of the match. Dublin City is inviting to a public screening of the match on Smithfield Plaza from 15:00.

Before the match a public screening of the movie “Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory” with Gene Wilder will take place from 13:00.

It seems that this somewhat odd combination of screenings is chosen to give the screening a strong “family-friendly” character and this is underpinned by the “strictly no alcohol” rule. (A rather unpopular rule for a sports event in Ireland.)

Access to Smithfield Plaza will be from New Church Street and North King Street.

Admission is free.

The shrine of St Caillín of Fenagh & medieval art – Talk

13:00, Wed 21 Sep

Royal Irish Academy, 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2

“The shrine of St Caillín of Fenagh and its place in Irish late medieval art” is a talk by Dr Paul Mullarkey, National Museum of Ireland.

The Book of Fenagh, an Irish manuscript commissioned in 1516, tells the story of the life of St Caillín, founder of the early Christian monastic community at Fenagh. The manuscript reflects the politics of early sixteenth-century north Connacht, with the saint’s life being used for propaganda purposes. It is the work of an expert scribe, Muirgheas Ó Maoilchonaire, and is an excellent example of late medieval Irish manuscript production. The exhibition in the Academy Library tells the story of scribes and scholars associated with the manuscript.

Admission is free.

A libretto is the text used in, or intended for, an extended musical work such as an opera or operetta. Libretti is the plural of libretto and the librettist is the person that creates/writes the libretto.]

Magazine Fort – Guided Tour

10:00 – 16:30, Fri 23 Sep

From Little Richard to John Wayne: American Popular Culture in the 1950s – Talk

18:00 – 19:30, Fri 23 Sep

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

The public lecture “From Little Richard to John Wayne: American Popular Culture in the 1950s” by Dr Daniel Geary (Mark Pigott Associate Professor in American History, TCD) is exploring the early days of rock-and-roll and the golden age of the Western. The talk focuses on two of the major cultural figures of the period, Little Richard and John Wayne, and will present clips from “Tutti-Frutti” and The Searchers.

Admission is free, but booking is required via the Eventbrite link below.

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

School Uniforms – What a bad invention!! ….or maybe not?

In my opinion, school uniforms are TOTALLY wrong. They are mostly ugly, impractical, outdated, discriminating, freedom-robbing, outrageously expensive, a tool for intimidation and oppression and totally unnecessary.

Since school has restarted nearly two weeks ago, you see them everywhere again and it is just unbelievable how ugly most of them are. The colours, the cut, the “worn-outness” are turning them in the ugliest possible clothing for kids. It turns them to sheep in a herd instead of giving them the opportunity to become young individuals. The uniform is used to oppress them and to punish them if they don’t have the right one and it is also used for one-upmanship where some school insist on crests on their tops because they feel they are better than others. And I just can’t believe that in the 21st century, girls in Ireland are still FORCED to wear skirts. How outdated is that?

This rant all started when I saw a “my child has started school again” picture on Facebook that was posted by a friend recently, her daughter was shown in her new school uniform and it must have been the worst I ever saw. The poor little girl even had to wear a totally unnecessary tie that was to 80% covered by the ugliest “dress”-thing you could imagine. It really makes you wonder how twisted the people must be that decide how a school uniform has to look like and what idiocy made them to add a tie even for girls.

Hey, nobody wants to wear ties, not even the grown ups and they do it less and less, so why do we have to force our six year olds to wear them? And really, would you wear an excrement coloured skirt? Well, if you wouldn’t why do we make our kids to to it?

Where I grew up, uniforms didn’t exist. So we had an opportunity to be different, there were some goths in my school and some really well dressed kids and anything in between. We all had a uniform, but it was our own uniform. Not one prescribed by the school management or the principal and we used this uniform to express our individuality.

I would love a country full of self-reliant, independently thinking, individuals, not full of sheep that need a leader to follow him/her, that have ever learned to oblige all the time, to surrender their individuality and to be dismissive,

Does the school-uniform-induced brain washing support more the first or second set of characteristics?

But now comes the kicker: Maybe times have changed so dramatically, that individualism isn’t even possible anymore. Because the (very valid!!) argument of supporters of school uniforms is that the uniform takes the pressure off kids’ back to compete with each other on clothing. Maybe kids NEED uniforms, which is why they all would want to wear the same clothes from certain clothes labels. Maybe today’s generation just can’t handle individuality anymore?

But then, “No School Uniform” still works in other countries! So is this lack of individuality maybe an Irish problem?

I can’t answer that question and still find the need of school uniforms odd! ….but I can also see that they can make sense in certain contexts.
