Hi all!
I worked really really hard to get this Dublin Event Guide out sooner than in other weeks, because I am a TOTAL City Spectacular fan and had hoped to make it there for 12:00, BUT things didn’t work out. So I am updating the online channels first again and will ad some more events afterwards and HOPEFULLY the City Spectacular won’t be finished yet when I am done. – The weather is getting better, so let’s all go to Merrion Square! :-)
[ad]
As I explained above: This Dublin Event Guide will be published again in two stages today. The first stage is an update on the website and the smartphone app, but more events will have to be added after that. The smartphone app will be updated continually during that and when all is completed, then the mail will be sent to you.
This is the FINAL version of this week’s Dublin Event Guide.
Super news regarding the bills! One amazingly generous person helped catching up last month! Thanks soo much Cristin! It means that the outstanding amount until the end of the month has shrunk down to EUR 80. With your help, that should definitely be reachable!! If you can help in any way, your help will be VERY much appreciated!!! Can YOU help here?
And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help? To get people to subscribe send them to www.dublineventguide.com.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote from speaker and author Steve Maraboli. He says
The purpose of fear is to raise your awareness, not to stop your progress.
Have you been afraid? Maybe afraid to fail or even afraid to succeed?
For the last 10 years I teach people how to defend themselves in the street if needed and imagine if fear stopped someone from moving away from the danger? That would certainly not be good, right? So, fear is meant to make you alert, not meant to freeze you!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Cristina B was amazingly helpful and further donations came from Pat M, Matija H and Rita B. Thanks a lot! I really appreciate your help! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
For me the City Spectacular makes this weekend! I will be there on Saturday and on Sunday watching as many shows as possible. I absolutely love Street Performance and am a fan of the Street Performance World Championship since Year 1. There are some changes that came with the renaming to City Spectacular that I am not too thrilled about, but that doesn’t take away from the fun I still get from this event year after year after year. Don’t miss it!
Shakespeare in the Park is back! We will get a longer run in August, but on Saturday is a performance in St. Patrick’s Park. It is a great event!
And if you have children, then the Teddy Bear Picnic in Blackrock should be on your horizon!
Yes, my beloved Fusion Sundays World Culture Market is also happening this week, but unfortunately the City Spectacular wins this time. I will be back at Newmarket next month! Promise! ;-)

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Has anybody heard anything about this lately. If you have, it would be great if you could send some information to dublineventguide@gmail.com Thanks!

EVENT TALKS: DOES DUBLIN NEED A NIGHT MAYOR?
‘Too often, public officials view their city’s nighttime existence with suspicion -as a sinister doppelgänger of its daytime form but with added problems, sleep-spoiling noise and sidewalks slicked with vomit. Even liberal politicians can have little experience with this twilight zone, given that they’re often tucked up in bed by 10 p.m. It’s the role of the night mayor to bridge this gap. The incumbent’s job is to manage and improve relations between night businesses, residents, and City Hall.’ – Feargus O’Sullivan for CityLab.
Several cities already have a night mayor like Melbourne and Amsterdam, is it time for Dublin to join them? Find out & join the discussion on 12th July.
Admission to this event is free, but booking is required via the Eventbrite website here.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Voices of Memory – Walk & Talk at sound art installation
30 June – 30 Sept
National War Memorial Gardens, Islandbridge, Dublin 8
Voices of Memory is a riverside sound art installation by Christina Kubisch at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens to remember the more than 49,000 Irish people who died in the First World War. In 1923, these names were published in Irish Memorial Records 1914-1918. Consisting of eight volumes, these records, beautifully designed and illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke, are housed nearby in the Irish National War Memorial Gardens.
Almost the entire list of these names was read by volunteers of different ages and accents from across Ireland. The sound installation is based on the flow of these male and female voices playing over the bank of the river.
Admission is free. www.goethe.de/ins/ie/en/ver.cfm?fuseaction=events.detail&event_id=20767264

Seditious Types, Legacy of the Printers of 1916 – Exhibition
07 May – September (Mon-Fri 09:00-17:00, Sat+Sun 14:00-17:00, closed bank holiday weekends)
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush Barracks, Haddington Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4
The exhibition “Seditious Types – Legacy of the Printers of 1916” will explore the role of printers active in 1916 and the central role of printed media in shaping the image and meaning of the Easter Rising.
Politics and the print industry had a complex relationship in 1916 Ireland. As a commercial sector the print industry produced vast amounts of stationary and advertising for the main political parties and the British administration. This often resulted in material from varying political points of view being produced in the same printing shops. However, a number of print shops were associated with the Gaelic League and the nationalist literary movement. This group of printers actively published works which would not have been printed by the mainstream printers of the time, including works by Yeats, Synge and O’Casey. In recognition of the power of print to inform and win public opinion, a nationalist print counter-culture existed in the form of journals, pamphlets and books. This ‘mosquito press’ circulated mainly in Dublin among radical political activists. In the case of the more seditious groups and individuals, small printing presses were often established in secret locations. By 1916 many of the key political activists were printers, compositors and editors.

Flaneur by Dublin – Photo Art Installation
02-24 July – 17:00-21:00
Smithfield Plaza, Smithfield, Dublin 7
Flaneur By Dublin brings the works of two contemporary photographers to Smithfield Plaza. Their photos are displayed in a series of large cubes, dispersed over a metal pathway installed in Smithfield Square. These large cubes become lightboxes at dusk, creating a unique display and extending the enjoyment of this open-air gallery until 21:00.
The two selected artists for Fla?neur By Dublin are Esther Teichmann (Germany) and Rik Moran (UK). They were for a residency in Ireland earlier this year, engaging with the urban and rural landscape and producing the present body of work.
Flaneur By Dublin is part of a larger project called Flâneur – New Urban Narratives. This is a new, European Union funded, 2 year long project, transforming photographers into fla?neurs and requesting them to apply a new approach to their work within the urban territory. The project involves an international network of some 20 organisations from 11 different countries, and it will be presented in the 13 partner cities.
The launch will take place on Sat 02 July at 19:00.
The art installation will be on show from 02-24 July

City Spectacular 2016
12:00 – 19:00, Sat 09 Jul
Merrion Square, Dublin 2
The best event in Dublin of the year is happening again over this coming weekend. The City Spectacular, sponsored by Laya Healthcare (formerly the “Street Performance World Championship”) is taking place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
There are some changes (less stages, fewer performers, added other events), but it is still an amazing and outstanding event and I strongly recommend it to anyone.
There will be about 40 street performance shows and other components of the City Spectacular are a a music stage, Creative Hub (sponsored by ESB), food stalls, Live Science Shows, an Imaginosity playground, writing workshops for children, Silent Disco, Artzone, Dance & Drama Workshops. etc
The festival is free, but be aware that the street performers make their money from your donations, so bring some money with you and be generous if the show was great.
The timetables are downloadable here, and the performers are introduced on www.cityspectacular.com/street-performers
Some seasoned Street Performance World Championship/City Spectacular goers will miss the big names that were at the festival over the years and indeed, the de-focus from the championship to just an entertainment event in one of many cities in the world, had an influence in that direction. But remember that you probably didn’t know a Space Cowboy or a Mario the Queen of the Circus either before you saw them in Merrion Square. So, come to the City Spectacular with the same enthusiasm, curiosity and playfulness as in all previous years and you will entirely enjoy it again! ;-)

SEEING – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 09 Jul
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The exhibition “SEEING – What are you looking at?” (24 June – 25 Sept 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring the sensory experience of vision, understanding and perception. It looks at how us human beings see by using eye tracking technology, eye tests and colour perception, but it also shows how machines see and what their limitations are.
It is a great exhibition full of intriguing exhibits, some are very clear, others need some more explanation or you should at least read the explanatory labels that every exhibit has.
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, SEEING is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that children from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.
When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service and it will help you soo much more to have a better experience
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 10 Jul
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Music Licensing In A Digital World – Seminar
18:30 – 20:30, Mon 11 Jul
IMRO, Pembroke Row (near Lower Baggot Street), Dublin 2
In the past, physical record sales, over the air radio and TV performances, synch licenses and live concerts were the basis of making a living in music. But how do songwriters, publishers and artists make money in the digital age where physical product sales are decreasing, streaming is the listening norm and online synch licenses are common.
This seminar with Entertainment Law attorney Todd Brabec tells you how the “new” music business works, what the deal structures look like and how much money can be made. The world of traditional media music licensing will also be discussed as well as how it differs from the online/digital music licensing area.
Admission is free, but booking is required via events@imro.ie

Does Dublin Need a Night Mayor? – Talk
18:00, Tue 12 Jul
Wood Quay Venue, Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8
Banter and Eventbrite are inviting to their next Event Talk with the topic “Does Dublin Need a Night Mayor?”
The thinking is that maybe the city changes so much at night that someone with specific responsibility for everything that is happening in the night should be available.
To me this is a totally ridiculous idea! Not because it wouldn’t be helpful to put more focus on what is happening during the night, but because we can’t even have a Day Mayor that is allowed to take any responsibilities based on his/her brief. All we have a City Manager who seems to do whatever he wants. So before we talk about a Night Mayor, we should talk about a democratisation of the running of the city by giving only people the power that can be re-elected or kicked out of their job.
What do you think? I see that there are still some tickets available for the event, so come to it and join the discussion.
Admission is free, but booking is required via the website below.

International Bar Jazz Night
21:30, Tue 12 Jul
The International Bar, 23 Wicklow Street, Dublin 2
Every Tuesday and Thursday the International Bar invites to a Jazz night in the Lounge.
Groups led by Cote Calmet, Sean Maynard Smith, Dominic Mullan, Paddy Groenland, Georgia Cusack & Alex Mathias are performing regularly with occasional guest players, but there are also other bands from all over.
Admission is free, with a suggested donation of EUR 5. The website clearly says that there is no entry fee, but – and that makes a lot of sense – that your donations are very much appreciated (Musicians need to pay for rent and food too!) Be generous after the gig if you liked it, but if someone wants to charge an admission charge, please point out that the “rules” as described on their website are like I have explained.

Motivational speaker, self-help author and personal finance instructor Tony Robbins runs a huge event once a year, called Unleash the Power Within (UPW) in London, that is attended by more than 6000 people every time. It is a four day event and it will – without a doubt – have a long lasting impact on every participant.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Busking under threat! City Councillors are determined to make Dublin boring.
For a number of years, the Dublin City Councillors are trying to re-organise the busking in the city and they are making a mess of it.
The problem is that the shops in the areas where busking makes sense don’t like buskers. They make noise and block the street, Busking at night also disturbs people’s sleep (more in Temple Bar than in Grafton Street where nobody lives). And then there are some really really bad buskers who shouldn’t be on the street at all.
So, it is totally accepted that a bit of structure needs to be injected. But the Councillors went over the top. They introduced the requirement for buskers to have a license that they need to buy from Dublin City and they defined the amount of noise buskers are allowed to make (but that is difficult to measure) and they created busking free zones and defined how far buskers should be from each other and for how long they are allowed to sing and how often they are allowed to repeat their songs. They even considered introducing the requirement of auditions for buskers!!! Mad!!
There was a bit of a light at the end of the tunnel! The previous busking laws were time limited to be reviewed some while later. This some while later has come now and with a LOT of delays finally the councillors discussed busking again and…made things worse again.
Because the noise measurement doesn’t work, now they have forbidden the use of backing tracks!!
Not too long ago, I saw a busker who played something like a pan flute. He wasn’t one of the Mexican flute player that can be found all over the world who mainly sell their CDs, but it was a guy whose hand was severely disabled. He could hold the pan flute but wouldn’t have been able to play any other instrument. With the new rules, he is out! Because pan flute without any backing track just doesn’t work.
A few years ago I heard two guys in Grafton Street who were amazing. They were the type of power or pop violinists that you see sometimes. Extremely talented, playing the violin like gods but they couldn’t do their gig without an orchestra. Obviously they didn’t bring their orchestra but had a backing track. You won’t see anything like that in Dublin anymore! …thanks to our City Councillors!
But it gets worse! Some of them even want to forbid the use of amplifiers. I am totally ok with a limitation of the amplifier use. Otherwise we will have huge PAs at some stage in Grafton Street and Temple Bar, but there are small 5-15W amps that help a bass player (for example) just to be heard without having to buy a new instrument. They don’t really make noise, they just allow the use of a normally amplified instrument in a more acoustic environment.
Dublin has a great musical tradition and a huge musical talent in our midst, but we (at least _I_) also like hearing “travelling musicians” and there HAS to be a way to use soft and careful limitations to improve the situation for ALL sides instead of forbidding everything!! City Councillors are meant to improve things in our City not destroy culture and variety.

It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe.
