Hi all!
This weekend is the 9th anniversary of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)!! 9 years or 468 weeks, some of you are receiving this weekly e-mail magazine and I didn’t miss one single week in these nine years. Some are getting today the 468th version, others have joined later, but no matter when you joined our still growing community, you are very welcome and hopefully will enjoy all the great things Dublin has to offer.
[ad]
I was on holidays until Wednesday and consequently there was relatively little time this week to prepare for the Dublin Event Guide, which means that I am hopelessly delayed today again. Last night Mr Sandman just sabotaged my work in the most irreverent way, so I wasn’t as productive as I needed to be and therefore this week unfortunately will be again posted in two stages. The first stage on the website and in the smart phone is a preliminary Dublin Event Guide. Then when all events are included the final version will be sent.
This is the FINAL version! Apologies for the huge delay again!
And on the 9th anniversary I have some good news regarding the bills! The full amount came together for the May bill thanks to some generous people! So a bit was taken already from the June amount and now only EUR 130 are still needed. Thanks for all the help! Can you help here?
And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 65,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help? To get people to subscribe send them to www.dublineventguide.com.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 65,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote by American Business Executive, Speaker and Author Jay Abraham. He said
Every human being I have ever met, irrespective of the business, the job or life situation they are in, possesses at least one and normally multiple instant jackpots that are within their grasp. All they have to do is recognize them, believe that they are there, and believe that they are entitled to harvest them and the financial and the personal wealth and riches that come along with them.
And he also said:
The fact is, everyone is in sales. Whatever area you work in, you do have clients and you do need to sell.
Jay Abraham will be in Dublin on Thursday for a free event and if you are interested in hearing more about his ideas and concepts, you can still register here.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Elizabeth B, Patryk R, Rolando C, Aidan C, Ann M, Anita W and Ryan M were so wonderful to help the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills. Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend the Dublin Port Riverfest definitely has to be on the list of the Picks. Because the current Science Gallery exhibition closes on Sunday, I also have to add that once again here. If the Bloom Festival in Phoenix Park was free, it would have the top spot here, but it isn’t free.
Because the weather will change soon again (unfortunately!) I would say, do this weekend what is most weather compatible. As long as it is good, be outside and when it turns sour again, look for the indoors events, there are plenty of both!
If you are interested in Business and Marketing, I also suggest that you check out the Success 2016 event with international speaker and business powerhouse Jay Abraham. I will definitely be at this event and am looking forward to it already.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone | Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Renewable Energy in Ireland!?
I got my Electricity Bill this week and discovered a table on the back of the page that identifies how the electricity is generated. The table says that in Ireland 34.5% of the electricity is made from renewable energy sources, the rest id from Natural Gas, Coal and Peat. Unfortunately the ESB only uses 19.4% from renewable energy sources.
On the same day I discovered this video on Facebook www.facebook.com/greenpeace.international/videos/10153896061433300/ It is a video by Greenpeace that says that from 07-11 May Portugal powered the entire country solely from renewable energy. And in 2016 until now, about 75% of the energy was from renewable sources (Solar, wind and hydro). It continues to say that in Germany 87% of the electricity on 08 May was from renewables. And in the UK Solar power beat coal generated power for one day.
Looks like Ireland – and especially the ESB – will have a LOT of catching up to do!!

6 TIPS TO ROCK YOUR EVENT MARKETING WITH SNAPCHAT Are you promoting your events the right way? Some event planners choose to stick to the main social networks for promoting their event. This includes the big names like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
However, for those looking to get an edge and try something new, now’s a great time to take advantage of the latest social media tools, including Snapchat.
This tool is greatly under-utilised and adding it to your arsenal just might be what you need to give your event that much needed push – particularly if you are targeting teens and younger millennials.
Read more about how to use Snapchat for your Event Marketing here.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Bloom Fringe – Art & Gardening Event
10:00 – 17:00, Sat 04 Jun
Dublin (various locations)
Bloom Fringe is completely independent from the Bllom Festival this weekend in Phoenix Park, but has definite links to it. And if that is a challenging concept, then so is the summary of a vast amount of events that is taking place on Saturday in this one event listing.
Take Art, Gardening, Performance and Community and mix them all together and you get the Bloom Fringe Festival. There will be “Make a Garden” Workshops on Barnardo Square, a Pop Up Picnic in Dublin Castle’s Gardens, a Street Art Jam in Temple Bar (Crampton Court), Bugs n Bees Children’s Art workshop in the Printworks Building at Dublin Castle, Guerrilla Gardening in Dublin Bikes baskets, a Bike Tour along the Grand Canal, a Basket Festival in Dublin Castle, Street Art Installations in Dame Lane and more.
And Ireland’s only Gardening Radio Show will be live from the Powerscourt Townhouse from 10:00-13:00. Check it out!
I would recommend that you go to Barnardos Suqare (next to City Hall) or Dublin Castle if you are intersted in Gardening, Art and Community and you will find most of the activities. Check the details on the website below or just turn up!
Admission to nearly all events is free. Some are ticketed, but the website tells you clearly what is what.

FIELD TEST – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 04 Jun
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
This exxhibition is closing this weekend, so use the last opportunity:
The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.
From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.
When you go to see the exhibition, get help from the Science Gallery mediators! They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00. Admission is free.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. Women’s Mini Marathon
14:00, Mon 06 Jun
Dublin (various locations)
The yearly Women’s Mini Marathon will happen again on the June bank holiday. It is a 10km run with the start line in Baggot Street and the finish line at Fitzwilliam Square. The event is a charity fundraiser where usually the participants choose their preferred charity and raise money for it. Only women are allowed to participate!
Registration is closed now and the event is not free, but it is free to cheer on and support the nearly 40,000 runners.
The course map is here and the route is roughly from Fitzwilliam Street via Baggot Street to Merrion Road, then via Nutley Lane to Stillorgan Road. Then the course does a loop out on Stillorgan Road towards the Radisson Hotel and back again to Nutley Lane. Then onwards through Donnybrook and back to Fitzwilliam Street.
Race numbers and bags have to be collected at the Woman’s World Show in the RDS Simmonscourt Complex on Saturday or Sunday between 10:00 and 18:00.
(The road closures are listed here. They seem quite extensive (or excessive!?) considering that even roads that don’t seem to be on the course are closed at various times between 07:00 and 19:30.)

The Invention of Italy – 1960: The economic miracle and “La dolce vita”
19:30, Tue 07 Jun
National Library, Kildare Street, Dublin 2
The event series “The Invention of Italy” continues with a talk about “1960: The economic miracle and La Dolce Vita” by Simona Colarizi.
In just over a decade Italy had emerged from the material and moral ashes of the Second World War and a searing civil war that spelled the end of Fascism. A new democratic and republican State had been born, but the changes with respect to the past were not limited to institutions and politics. As elsewhere in Western Europe the Golden Age had also dawned in Italy, which experienced a genuine economic, social and cultural revolution. The primarily agricultural country was transformed into an industrial power, ranked seventh among the world’s greatest. A miracle – this was the exact term used to define those years of tumultuous growth in Italy, the years of Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita” which captured both the highs of the economic boom but also growing nostalgia for a world of tradition and certainty that was forever past.

The Idea of a Republic: Freedom and Politics – Discussion
18:00, Wed 08 Jun
Royal Irish Academy, 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2
This is the fourth in a series of six events themed around the constitution.
The Preamble to Bunreacht na hEireann asserts a connection between concern for the common good and the dignity and freedom of each individual. But are freedom and the common good incompatible? Or can we find new ways of making sense of the republican idea that we flourish as individuals only when all of us flourish within the framework of a legally regulated, political association?

Success 2016 with Jay Abraham – Business Seminar
08:30 – 20:00, Thu 09 Jun
CityWest Hotel Congerence & Event Centre, Saggart, Co. Dublin
Jay Abraham is an American Business Executive, Speaker and Author and he will be the main speaker at the Success 2016 event in Dublin. He is a coach that claims to have helped companies to generate more than 9.4 billion Dollars and he has a reputation for delivering a program of inspiration and practical learning.
At the event in the CityWest Conference Centre there will also be three other speakers (Paul O’Mahony, Darren Winters, Andrew Cordle) and the event is free, because all four speakers will promote their training programmes, which will help paying the cost. However, they give tons of valuable and useful information throughout the day and the promotion of their programmes is only one small aspect.
As far as I know Jay Abraham has never given any talk in Ireland and we don’t often get high profile international speakers here, so it might be a rare opportunity! I know of Jay Abraham for many years and I will definitely go to that event and am looking forward to it!
Admission is free, but booking is required here.
Basic Admission is completely free, but if you decide to buy tickets for a higher level, then the Dublin Event Guide will get a reward from the Event Organisers, which will be used to keep the Dublin Event Guide going!

Raffaello Samples, Red Tulips & free Hot Air Ballon ride
11:00 – 19:00, Fri 10 Jun
Merrion Square, Dublin 2
Raffaello, the white chocolate-free, coconut sweet is bringing 4,000 tulips, 10,000 Raffaello samples to Dublin and will hand them out on Friday and Saturday (10+11 June) near Merrion Square.
In addition they are bringing a Hot Air Balloon to Dublin that will rise up over Dublin for 20 minute trips of a max of 4 people per ride. The Balloon Trip is free, but it seems that “first come, first served” is the chosen method of filling the balloon. And since on the two days only a total of 192 people will be able to enjoy this great experience, you shouldn’t bet too much on making it into the basket under the balloon.
But for the 192? Wow! What an experience!
For the majority, who has to stay behind, a photo booth, and complimentary hair and make up sessions have to do.

Dublin (various locations)
The EURO 2016, the European Soccer Championship, is starting on Friday with the match of France vs Romania.
EURO 2016 will take place in France this year and it will run until 10 July. Ireland’s first match is on Monday (13 June) at 17:00.
Unfortunately I haven’t heard about any public viewings in Dublin. They are extremely popular in many other countries, but Ireland hasn’t adopted that great idea yet (?).
All matches and times are on the website below.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
New Architecture and Planing in Dublin – Is it getting better or worse?
Let me start with this: I am NOT an architect, not an expert in building design and I also am not a structural engineer or a town planer, so I am not speaking from a place of trained or studied knowledge, BUT I do have an opinion.
On Friday it was announced that Hawkins House in Poolbeg Street, near Tara Station will be knocked down and replaced by a new building. The Department of Health will move out and once the building is finished some other department will move in. The Department of Health will move to the former Bank of Ireland building in Baggot Street.
TheJournal.ie had one of the best articles about this development here and they also provide some detail about the new building.
Through my day job, I know the current Hawkins House building reasonably well and I have to say that it is VERY ugly and doesn’t seem to be structurally safe anymore. Scaffolding is supporting the building in many places OR is protecting pedestrians from pieces that might come off. On the inside, Hawkins House is certainly not modern (it is from 1962), but not too bad looking. However, I can see many areas regarding comfort, but also regarding energy efficiency etc where significant improvements would be hugely beneficial.
After the announcement a good few people argued that building projects and the massive amount of money they will cost shouldn’t carried out as long as sick children can’t be looked after well and appropriately and I can empathise with this point. However, I don’t think one is directly linked to the other or simpler put, I don’t think one should exclude the other!
So with Hawkins House needing some significant work anyway, it probably makes more sense to knock it down than to patch it up.
The newspapers write about the “ugliest building in Dublin” and there are many competing for the prize. Hawkins House is a strong contender, so I was curious to see the proposal for its replacement and shockingly (but not THAT surprisingly) the replacement doesn’t look much better at all. It is a more modern ugly building, but it is questionable if any normal office building can ever look good.
I heard (but have no proof for it) that Hawkins House won some prizes when it was built in 1962 and in the same way the new building could win prizes, but in 40 years time, I would expect the new Hawkins House also being declared ugly. So now change there.
What puzzles me the most, though, is the fact that the current 11 storey building will be replaced with a 10 storey building. How does that makes sense? Liberty Hall and the Ulster Bank buildings are quite near and they are all higher than Hawkins House. And with space limitations in the City Centre, we need to make maximum use of the available space, so I would have expected an INCREASE in height, not a decrease. It should be at least 13 or 14 floors high, not 10.
And if you accept that in 30-50 years it will be declared as ugly anyway, then I also wonder if it should be attempted to make it “pretty” for today’s taste!?
