Hi all!
Because I already started on Tuesday working on last week’s Dublin Event Guide, I was able to get it to you by Friday morning. This week, however, I was not able to start before Thursday and consequently it will be unfortunately late again. So the solution is found for sending it earlier: I need to go on holidays more often! ;-)
[ad]
I will send it in two stages again this week: The website and smart phone app will be updated first, then I will add more events and I will send the e-mail magazine when all events are included.
The version you have at the moment is the FINAL edition. I had soooo many problems. Technical and other issues and I am really sorry that this week’s e-mail magazine is so so so so late!!
Thanks to the donations last week. Just another EUR 10 for this month and I will stop nagging you until the beginning of May! Thanks for your help!
And here is my weekly appeal: Please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great, more would be even better. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Your money will be used to pay the monthly EUR 190 bill for sending the newsletter using MailChimp, for webhosting and domain names. I am happy to work 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week without making anything from it, but for the bills I need your help. You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And here is the second area where you can help: Without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 64,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help? To get people to subscribe send them to www.dublineventguide.com.
————————–
More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s Feel Good Slot is a quote again. this time by Steve Maraboli. He said
Your fear is 100% dependent on you for its survival.
What does he mean with that? He claims that without you “helping” your fear to continue to be there, it wouldn’t be there anymore. So if you want to achieve something and are afraid to achieve it, afraid to fail or afraid just to go after it, you are stopping yourself from getting to where you want to be. So what could you do to let that fear pass away? How could you stop feeding the fear?

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Nicola R, Mary O’N, Brendan O’B, Bruce F and Martin C were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend the Record Store Day is on Saturday and the Experience Japan Day will take place on Sunday. The Musictown Festival continues until Sunday and the Dublin: One City One Book Festival will run for the rest of the month, both will come with many events. A few more 1916 events are back as well because the REAL anniversary only happens next Sunday (24 April).
And for all parents that will have to entertain children, check ou tthe the Summer Camp Fair by Kidsguide.ie this Saturday. It will take place at the Maritime Museum in Dun Laoghaire and started at 10:30, but will run until 16:00. So still time to go there if you see this mail on Saturday morning. Check out their ad below!

And if you want me to use/test a product you are selling and then share my assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing gear. ;-)

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

College Green Plans – Consultation
The plans for College Green have been revealed. The intention is to pedestrianise the whole College Green area from Starbucks in Dame Street to the Westin Hotel in Westmoreland Street and up to Grafton Street. Suffolk Street is also becoming a car free zone. This is a HUGE area in the middle of the city and that has some pros and some cons.
The plus sides are that for the first time, Dublin will get a major civic space in the middle of the city centre and I really hope that that will be the new site for a completely new Christmas Market for Dublin and will also give opportunity to have other markets and events in that area.
But there are downsides for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. The downside for motorists is clear, but the new issues for pedestrians and cyclists might need a bit more of an explanation. Usually cyclists are banned from pedestrianised areas and while there are short cycling lanes reaching into the main pedstrianised area, it most likely will still mean that you have to get off your bike and push it for some distance before you are allowed to constinue your trip and since this is one of the main North-South routes, that doesn’t seem to be a good options. Complete cycling paths that allow to traverse the entire pedestrianised zone should be provided.
For pedestrians such cycling paths are a problem because it de-pedestrianises the zone BUT much worse is that busses, the LUAS and possibly even Taxis (completely unacceptable!) are still allowed to drive throughout the so-called “pedstrianised” zone. Either all or nothing is my opinion and wile we can’t divert the LUAS, busses and definitely taxis should NOT be allowed to drive through in my opinion.
Can you imagine the line of hundreds of taxis that will try to drive through that area in the jope to pick up passengers? And they are prepared to stop at any point at any time, ignorant to busses and the LUAS trying to get through.
If you have different opinions or even share my opinions, you are asked to submit your view on the proposed solution.
You have until 24 May and all details are here: www.dublincity.ie/college-green

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

1916 Sackville Street: Remembering 262 Civilians Through Art
Fri 08 – Sun 24 April
National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
There were more civilians killed in the 1916 Easter Rising than Irish Volunteers or British soldiers. Of the 485 people who died, 262 were civilians. These men, women and children have no memorial and lie in graves, some forgotten.
The objective of the 1916 Sackville Street Art Project is to hold an exhibition to commemorate the lives of these ordinary civilians that were killed in the 1916 Easter Rising. Schools, educational groups, youth groups and individuals were invited to create a 3D house from any art form to represent a civilian that was killed during the 1916 Rising, and where possible, to provide a brief historical profile of that civilian and/or the art project.
The response was overwhelming and resulted in this unique exhibition. The initiative was started by ceramic artist Ciara O’Keefe. www.1916sackvillestreet.com

Glass House – Sound Installation
06-17 April (10:00-22:00)
Smithfield Square, Dublin 7
Glass House is a Sound Installation that responds to the Lighthouse Cinema Film Schedule and is by artist Sven Anderson.
It responds to films being screened in the Light House Cinema by amplifying subtle traces of their soundtracks outside of the cinema on Smithfield Square.
The sound emerges from two of the lighting braziers that tower over the square (located in front of the entrance to the cinema). The title of the piece goes back tp John Cage’s analogy of experimental music and glass architecture, where one does not see the surface (or hear the music) but instead somehow looks (or listens) through it.

FIELD TEST – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 16 Apr
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The exhibition “Field Test – Radical Adventures in Future Farming” (11 Mar – 05 Jun 2016) in the Science Gallery is exploring how farming will look like in the future and what new developments will change farming so that we can deal with the global food challenges.
From Farm Cyborgs (for example a Virtual Reality environment for chicken so that they can think they are free range), via odd, unique and forward looking foods (e.g. insects for improving your protein intake); growth houses for your home; very different seeds (e.g. beans that taste like beef) to the “LOCI Food Lab” (outside near the entrance to the Science Gallery) where you can get a customised snack, the exhibition has a lot of interesting exhibits that revealing, intriguing or surprising.
Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, FIELD TEST is suitable for all ages with a particular focus on the age group of 15-25, but I would say that chilren from 10 years of age can understand the whole exhibition if they get some additional explanations and there are even some exhibits that would work for younger children.

They are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

Artist’s Vision for Ireland – Symposium
14:00 – 16:00, Thu 21 Apr
Smock Alley Theatre, 7 Exchange Street Lwr, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
In the context of the Easter Rising commemorations and the recent ‘Waking the Feminists’ debates, this symposium explores the theme “An Artist’s Vision for Ireland” and guest speakers are Deirdre Kinahan, playwright and Dr Eric Weitz, Associate Professor of Drama and Theatre Studies at Trinity College Dublin.
“Poets, dreamers, visionaries and women were amongst those who advocated or fought for Irish freedom in the Easter Rising of 1916. Today women are still campaigning for full equal rights and this symposium asks what would an artist’s vision for Ireland today look like, one that is based on a genuine need for social justice, gender equality and human rights and is sustainable, ethical and inclusive, enabling ‘creativity to flow’.”
Admission to the symposium is free, but booking is required via the Eventbrite link below.
After the Symposium the play “The Woman is Present: Women’s Stories of 1916” will be performed by the Smashing Times Theatre Company and the same ticket as for the symposium will get you access to the play.

Free Raif Badawi – Demonstration
18:00, Thu 21 Apr
Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, 6-7 Fitzwilliam Square East, Dublin 2
Blogging is a normal thing in Ireland, there are fashion blogs, political blogs, food blogs and many many more and we don’t think about it much. If we lived in Saudi Arabia on the other hand, things would be different:
It’s 15 months since Raif Badawi was flogged in public 50 times for defending free speech on his blog. Raif is still in prison, still awaiting his sentence of 950 more lashes. Raif should never have been imprisoned in the first place.
Join this Amnesty Ireland demonstration calling on Saudi Arabia to quash Raif’s conviction and overturn his unjust prison sentence, fine, media and travel ban immediately.

Artists Discussion: Renzo Martens of “A Fair Land”
18:00 – 19:00, Fri 22 Apr
Irish Museum of Modern Art, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Dublin 8
In the context of the upcoming project “A Fair Land” at the IMMA, artist Renzo Martens discusses his practice with Adam Sutherland (Grizedale Arts) and Sarah Glennie (Director, IMMA).
Renzo Martens was born in the Netherlands in 1973, studied Political Sciences in Nijmegen and Visual Arts in Ghent and Amsterdam. In 2010 he founded the Institute for Human Activities (IHA) “which aims to create gentrification effects in the Congolese rain forest through the establishment of an international art centre. IHA collaborates with local plantation workers and seeks to acknowledge the economic mechanisms through which art has the greatest impact on social reality. This stems from Martens research and documentary series that highlights the exploitation of underprivileged people by media industries and cultural producers, including Martens himself.”
Admission is free, but booking is required via the link below.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Easter Rising Commemorations – the oddest one!?
The real anniversary of the Easter Rising is on Sun 24 April and the celebrations/commemorations on Easter Monday (28 March) were very much premature.
One thing that surprised me (positively) was that Sinn Fein didn’t feature at all. The commemorations should not be and were not claimed by any political party, but it was an event for the people. At the beginning of the year it looked as if Sinn Fein would try to give themselves a big pat on the shoulder for what “they” had achieved in 1916, but despite the current Major being from Sinn Fein, the party kept a very low profile. Good!
With the REAL anniversary happening nearly a month after the big event, the question was how this “second” anniversary would be celebrated and the answer seems to be: NOT!! A little odd, that there is not at least some small scale official event, but we will get over it.
With surprise though, I found out that on Sunday 24 April a quite odd commemoration will take place: Dublin City Council and Athletics Ireland are hosting a “Dublin Remembers 1915 Run”. I am not even sure why I find this so odd, but reading through the promotional text on Dublin City’s website it just sounds strange when you read:
“With the centenary celebrations of 1916 in full swing, this is an excellent opportunity to put your running shoes on in remembrance.”
And the text continues explaining that the run will pass by “iconic sites … exactly 100 years ago to the day of the Easter Rising.” (Let’s not dwell on the incorrect sentence with the word “ago” not fitting in there at all.) Running a 5km run and passing by the locations where people shot each other 100 years ago does seem to me to be one of the oddest ways to commemorate.
Is any harm done by this “Dublin Remembers 1916 Run”? Not at all! …and I still find it a rather strange way to commemorate a rebellion 100 years ago.
[If you want to participate in this run, you have to register before 20 April and it will cost you EUR 11: www.athleticsireland.ie/news/dublin-remembers-1916-5k/

It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.

Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
