Hi all!

Wow! I love this brilliant weather! Can we please have lots more of it? Dublin just looks gorgeous in the sunshine and with warm temperatures. Don’t you think? I know, we are STILL in Ireland and realism requires us to appreciate every hour of sunshine and to make most of it, because it is NOT the normal weather. But I AM hoping that we will have a good few more nice days and with your help and with intensive prayers to the weather gods, we hopefully will have wonderful weather on 20+21 of June for the Street Performance World Championship in Merrion Square.

Next week’s issue of the Event Guide is No. 104 and therefore it is time to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)!!!! In addition 100 issues and 4000 subscribers are more milestones that require some proper celebration.:-) Do you want to join me? Will you meet me on Sat 13 June from approx. 20:00 in a City Centre venue in Dublin? The “alternative” Valentine’s Day party was such a big success, that I suggest we will have another great evening, meeting lots of nice people and having a chat with them. The near-100 people that were there last time had a great time and maybe we can gather even more this time!?!?! And finally: Last week I mentioned the concert of the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, the best Gospel Choir in Dublin, and we do need you! The Gospel Choir urgently needs to raise money to guarantee the survival of the weekly Gospel Mass in Gardiner Stree Church (Sundays at 19:30) and a concert on 06 June in the Helix in Dublin City University (DCU) is a fundraiser for this. I am involved with the Gospel Choir and do the sound engineering and all technical and logistical challenges at gigs and would appreciate if you could make it to the concert. I know that the Helix is ideal for visitors who have to use public transport, but the good news is that the Dublin Bus routes 3, 4, 11, 11A, 11B, 13, 13A, 16 and 19A all come from the City Centre and stop outside the University at the Ballymun Road and Collins Avenue entrances, or near to the university with stops on the Swords Road and Glasnevin Avenue.

This weekend I will spend the whole Saturday preparing the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir gig and hope to see you at the concert in the Helix from 20:00. Some tickets will still be available at the door, I am told. On Sunday I will probably go to the Horse Market in the morning and to the Craftymarket after that. I might as well give the Art Walk a try while I am out and about. Next week I will try to catch one of the free Shakespeare performances in town and would like to go to the Alchemy Café, but will probably not be able to fit it in. :-/ So this weekend is not the busiest, but there are still a good few things to do, so get out and enjoy Dublin. ;-)

SHAMANS OF BULGARIA – TICKET COMPETITION

BICYCLES FOR DUBLIN
I mentioned last week that the bicycle stations for the bicycle rental scheme are currently being installed. Not in all locations this is being done at a good spot and many many car park spaces are being sacrificed even if plenty of other space is available nearby (e.g. at the Radisson Hotel in Golden Lane). Now I found out what the likely rental conditions will be: It seems that there will be a yearly fee of 10 Euro and for this the first 30 minutes of bike use will be free. Since Dublin is very small, I guess 30 min will bring you in most cases to your destination and a EUR 10 charge per year is very fair. I am looking forward to the launch in July and will tell you all about the scheme when new details emerge.

The downside of the deal, however, is that a lousy 450 bikes are provided. The advertisement agency that won the deal certainly pulled the wool over the esteemed city councillor’s heads.

ELECTION FRIDAY
Today is the big day all parties were working towards. All over Ireland the Irish members of the European Parliament and the members of the local councils will be elected and I expect there will be lots of surprises and shock developments. Opinion polls and forecasts are very interesting, but in the end, the only decider is who people actually vote for. The websites www.rte.ie/news/elections and www.irishtimes.com/indepth/elections2009 will probably the best ones to follow the elections and to find out the results.

In order to beat an economic downturn not governments can help, but individuals are needed that take the initiative and to create new markets and new opportunities for themselves and for their customers and hopefully employees. CHEKA KIDOGO – WOLFE TONE SQUARE
Cheka Kidogo, an exhibition by fashion photographer Rankin will be on show on Wolfe Tone Square (beside the Jervis Centre) from 01 May to 31 July 2009. Rankin travelled with Oxfam to a refugee camp in Eastern Congo and used his celebrity portraiture with entirely different subjects – the residents of Mugunga camp, home to 250,000 people displaced by Congo’s harrowing violence. Photographed against Rankin’s trademark white backdrop rather than in their everyday surroundings, those in the portraits boldly defy the war victim tag and shine out as real people with individuality, humour and warmth. The exhibition’s name Cheka Kidogo, meaning “laugh a little” in Swahili, celebrates the spirit of the Congolese people in the face of adversity, but was also the phrase that people called out to their friends being photographed. GOYA – INSTITUTO CERVANTES
“Goya. The portrayed conscience” is an exhibition in the Instituto Cervantes that will be on show from 04 June – 25 July. One of most famous series by Francisco de Goya (Fuendetodos 1746 – Bordeaux 1828) is the collection of etchings published in 1799 under the title “Caprichos”. “Goya. The portrayed conscience” compiles 80 etchings belonging to the Instituto Cervantes and printed on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition in Seville in 1929. Besides the visual impact, artistic and technical interest of the “Caprichos” we shouldn’t forget about their instructive ethical message conveyed through image and text. Their critical overtone alerted the Inquisition, which is why they were withdrawn from circulation almost immediately. Goya would describe them as “capricious matters which aim to show the ridicule of things, to whip the prejudice, pose and hypocrisy justified with time”. ‘Beyond the Pale’ is an exhibition of landscape paintings in watercolours and acrylics by Jim Mc Partlin at the Mill Theatre Dundrum. The exhibition will be on show from 06 to 18 June 2009. CLIMATE CHANGE LECTURE – UCD EARTH SYSTEMS INSTITUTE
The UCD Earth Systems Institute is inviting to a weekly seminar about climate change. FERRY TALES – THEATRE AT THE FERRY TERMINAL
“Ferry Tales” is a live theatre performance at Dublin Port Company’s Ferry Terminal and the generous Port Company is inviting us to come to this performance for free! Carpet Theatre will take over Dublin Port Company’s Ferry Terminal for a limited run of four performances, inspired by the myriad of characters that pass through Dublin Port on ferries every day. Ferry Tales will bring the audience on board an interactive journey to catch a phantom ferry from Dublin Port.   The performance begins as soon as the audience steps onto a bus at Busáras Bus Station destined for Dublin Port.  A host of fascinating characters get caught up in a pattern of coming and going as Carpet Theatre unpack the experience of collective travel through the generations: check-in rituals, meetings and partings, tears of joy and despair when the ship comes in.

ART WALK – ART-FAIR AT THE LIFFEY BOARDWALK
The Liffey Boardwalk between the Ha’penny Bridge and O’Connell Bridge will be transformed this summer into THE ART WALK, an open air art-fair, organised by the North Dublin Student & Artists League and sponsored by Dublin Port Company.
Up to 200 participants including established artists, up-and-coming artists and student artists from a number of art colleges will exhibit their work at The Art Walk between June and September. With 18 different artists showcased every weekend, the exhibition will be continuously evolving with a wide range of living art from paintings to photographs on show.

HORSE MARKET – SMITHFIELD PLAZA
Every first Sunday of the month, the horse traders from Dublin and surrounding areas come together and sell and buy horses on Smithfield Plaza. This tradition is in place for many many years and after the modernisation of Smithfield Plaza, Dublin City tried to move the market to another location. This has not been successful yet and consequently the horse market is still a monthly feature in the City Centre. It starts relatively early in the morning and goes on until all traders have left, which is around 13:00. If you want to experience this somewhat anachronistic event, you should consider coming relatively early. I would recommend around 09:00-10:00 experience it at its peak. Especially all the photographers among you should find plenty of four-legged models. And if you did take some nice pictures, maybe you can share them with all by letting me know the link to your online photo album. CONCORDE CONCERT – NATIONAL GALLERY
Concorde, the contemporary music ensemble, present new works by Judith Ring and Stephen Gardner on Sun 07 June from 15:00-17:00 in the National Gallery on Merrion Square.
Concorde introduce 2 new works, both commissioned by the ensemble. Stephen Gardner has written a lively duo for Concorde’s Paul Roe on clarinet and Elaine Clark on violin, entitled klezmeria. DUBLIN SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL
The first Trinity College Shakespeare Festival will take place from Mon 08 June until Sun 14 June. It will feature performances and workshops based on the work of William Shakespeare throughout the week. Scenes of Shakespeare and full length performances will take place all around Dublin in its most idyllic locations, and all this will be running alongside an extensive community outreach programme which will take place in the form of workshops, performances and talks in primary schools around Dublin. The scenes and full length performances of Shakespeare will be performed in the various locations:
St. Stephens Green, Trinity College, Merrion Square Park, Civic Amphitheatre, Liffey Boardwalk, Grafton Street, Steps of Custom House, Christchurch Cathedral. Most performances are free and only the headline act “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (daily at 19:30) which will be performed in the Rose Garden in Trinity College Dublin by the British Shakespeare Company does cost money (EUR 18/10).

ALCHEMIST CAFÉ
The Alchemist Café Dublin is part of the Café Scientifique movement, a group of people that are interested in discussing scientific topics outside of the typical scientific environment and instead over a cup of coffee or similar. Dr Cormac O’Raifeartaigh of the Waterford Institute of Technology discusses the origins of our universe. How old is it? How did it come into being? TALKING BOOKS – CONVERSATIONS WITH DERMOT BOLGER
“Talking Books – a series of conversations with Dermot Bolger” is the title of a series of events on Thursdays 16 April, 14 May, 11 June and 09 July in the Deansgrange Library. Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is delighted to present ‘Talking Books’, a series of intimate public conversations by Novelist, playwright and poet Dermot Bolger will talk with leading Irish writers about the art of writing and the everyday practices, routines and difficulties involved with creating a sustained piece of literature. Broadening out to include questions and comments from the audience, these evenings are intended to be enjoyed by emerging writers and by anyone interested in contemporary Irish writing.

NATIONAL PRINT MUSEUM – LECTURE
The National Print Museum in Haddington Road (entrance next to the Beggars Bush pub) in Ballsbridge is inviting to another free lecture on Thurs 11 June at 19:30. The title is “200 Years of Trade Unionism” and the lecture will commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Dublin Typographical Provident Society. It will reflect on the 200 year history of the Irish Print Group (SIPTU) from the DTPS, through the IGS and IPU to the present day. It will be given by Owen A. CLIMATE CHANGE LECTURE – UCD EARTH SYSTEMS INSTITUTE
The UCD Earth Systems Institute is inviting to a weekly seminar about climate change. The final public lecture of this long-running programme will take place on Fri 12 June from 12:30-13:30 in The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, 6 Kildare Street, Dublin 2. The topic is “The Nano-Environment: Nanotechnology applications and impact on the environment” by Dr. Iseult Lynch, UCD School of Chemistry & Chemical Biology. CAR BOOT SALE
On 14 June, as part of the Liberties Festival, a Car Boot Sale will take place in Newmarket Square (off Cork Street) Dublin 8 from 12:00 to 16:00. There is no charge for taking part, but anyone interested in taking part must register with the SICCDA offices, 90 Meath St. telephone 01-4536098.

STREET PERFORMANCE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

WALTONS GUITAR FESTIVAL – FARMLEIGH HOUSE
Farmleigh House in Phoenix Park is regularly inviting to free, but ticketed concerts and the first concert of that type is part of the Waltons Guitar Festival and will take place on Wed 01 July at 20:00. The description says: “A concert of laid-back Brazilian lullabies, fiery tangos, graceful Scarlatti and riotous Klezmer.” Performers are Alec O’Leary (guitar) and Deirdre O’Leary (clarinet) and they will play a mixture of classical, jazz and Brazilian folk music by Laurindo Almeida and nuevo tango with incorporated elements of baroque music and jazz by Argentinian Astor Piazzolla.

The Waltons Guitar Festival of Ireland is an annual event celebrating the music of the guitar in its many forms. The largest event of its kind in Ireland, the festival attracts top artists from around the world. RECOMMENDED VS COMPULSORY!!!
A friend of mine and long term Dublin Event Guide Community Member was a little careless and got caught by a speed control a few months ago. It was not the “police man with hairdryer” type of speed control, but the white van with the blacked out window at the back and the camera inside. Some while later this friend got a letter and was told that she has 28 days to pay the fine by credit card and had to provide details including driving licence number/origin and credit card number etc. In addition it was “recommended” that she should send a copy of her driving license. Well, a recommendation is not more than that and without thinking much more about it, she did send all the REQUIRED information in time, but not the RECOMMENDED copy of the license. Three weeks later, she got a letter back saying something along the lines “we cannot proceed with payment of this fine as you haven’t provided a copy of your driving licence”. :-O I should mention at this point that her license is a french license, but nowhere in the initial letter it said that “if your driver’s license is not issued in Ireland, you have to send a copy”.
Since the straight forward payment route was rejected, she did go to the post office to pay and was told “Sorry we cannot take your payment because you’re too late…ring the fine office…”. Hmmmm.
She rang the fine office and was told: ‘No you can’t pay now anymore, you will have to go to court…because you’re too late…’
She now will have to go to court, will prove that she wanted to pay but that her attempt was rejected and hopefully the case will be thrown out, but it will cost and time in court. This is odd!!!
The solution would be a simple sentence in the original letter that makes it COMPULSORY to send a copy of the license back in case the license is not issued in Ireland. – This can’t be THAT difficult!
Oh, and if YOU want to avoid being caught, you can check the Speed Enforcement Zones on the Garda Siochana website garda.ie/sez/Default.aspx or nicely pictured in a map, on www.mypois.ie/main_vr2.php?pid=67&dz=11 Please note that Speed Enforcement Zone only means that a speed control MIGHT happen in that area at some time.
