Hi all!

This week I had to do a two stage release of this Dublin Event Guide again. First on the smart phone app and on the website. But despite the fact that I had already reached 200 events, I still had to add a few more. That’s the reason why this mail is much later in comparison. I have to think about that as an option in the future (i did it before but only rarely) so that you get access to all the information earlier than currently at least via these two other channels. Have a great weekend! And hopefully this Dublin Event Guide is useful to you, even if it is late again. Update: What you read here now is the final edition!

[ad]

In the meantime, please don’t forget that there are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with every week: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Unfortunately not many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!

And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help?

For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is www.dublineventguide.com.

————————–

Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)

And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have an event-full weekend and week,

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

Today’s feel good slot is a quote from Jim Rohn, the speaker and motivator. He said:

Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.

So change lots! Don’t wait for the good fortune or the opportunities to MAYBE land on your doorstep. Instead go out and hunt after it!

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.

Last week Anita W, Peter W and Catherine G were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!

The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

EventbriteThe main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.

All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This week there are too main things that I have to list here: All the Christmas Markets that are starting up from Saturday and also the newest Science Gallery exhibition “Trauma”. Check it out it is a good one!

Dublin news

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!

Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?

To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!

When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

Book Depository
Amazon

And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:

Groupon
LivingSocial

When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:

HMV | | Vodafone |
Expedia
| Lastminute.com | Hotels.com

When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!

And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Pubs and Restaurants in Dublin – The good times are back!?

There was a time not too long ago, when pubs and restaurants closed left, right and centre. But it seems the good times are definitely back, at least for the pub trade. In recent months there are new openings left, right and centre. Some of the most recent new openings are

+ The Chelsea Drugstore (new on George’s Street near George’s Street Arcade)
+ DeSelby’s (new on Camden Street, near Flannery’s)
+ Wigwam (replacing Twisted Pepper on Abbey Street)
+ Bow Lane (Aungier Street, replacing derelict Delaney’s)
+ The Jar (replacing Solas Bar on Wexford Street)

Interestingly, four of the five are in the one (super long) street that is made up of George’s Street, Wexford Street, Aungier Street, Camden Street.

And if you look into the details, you will see that two are replacing previously active pubs and one replaces a former pub, so it is not all new and Some would say frequent change of ownership is still an indication for trouble in the trade.

Pixmania in administration

Worst timing possible maybe?
It seems that Pixmania, the huge online consumer goods company with more than 210mio turnover, went into administration (procedure de sauvegarde) in France, where the company is based. It happened at the end of October, but didn’t make it into the press in Ireland. Pixmania has also an Irish website at Pixmania.ie

“In Administration” – and similarly in France the “procedure de sauvegarde” – is not a definite death sentence, BUT it is a serious issue and a warning that consumers should consider. If a company is in administration it will continue to operate as normal while it (or the administrator) will look for ways to rescue the company (for example by finding new funding, reducing the debt or selling the company). But if the rescue is unsuccessful, it can happen that the business will have to close.

When it comes to consumer goods and Christmas, this can cause a lot of problems for customers. For example: If you buy a product, but the product is faulty you should get a replacement, but if the company had to close in the meantime, you might get nothing. Another issue: Vouchers (or credit) might be worth nothing after a company is sold and definitely if the company has to close.

So you should be cautious when/if you buy from Pixmania. Sure, this customer caution could be terminal for Pixmania, but experiences we had in Ireland when HMV closed a few years ago make the alarm bells ring.

Details (in french!) are here and here.

We built this city: Chicago!

Many cities in the USA were built by Irish people and one of them is Chicago. The Irish Architectural Foundation (IAF) commissioned Dyehouse Films to make a short film about Chicago and the involvement of Irish people in building it.

www.vimeo.com/145636793

“We built this city” is a series of events by the IAF that started in London and will move next to New York in Spring 2016. It is a panel discussion that shines a light on the Irish-influenced cities in the world.

Opportunities

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to highlight some of the events they – as the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) – would particularly like to bring to your attention. Many events listed here will be free, but there will be a non-free event in the list as well and they will be marked as non-free. All information is supplied by Eventbrite.

== EVENTBRITE PICKS ==

No Eventbrite picks this week, but it should be back soon.

In the meantime you can find lots of events at www.eventbrite.ie or download the Eventbrite app to find events around you.

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

The Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival is this year taking place at the new location near the Maritime Museum. It starts already this Saturday and Sunday and then runs from Thursdays to Sundays every week until 24 Dec.

With 20 stalls selling food and crafts, it is not one of the bigger markets but nestled between the new LexIcon library and the Maritime Museum it might have a better chance to create some Christmas atmosphere than the location at “The Metals” (near the Pavilion Theatre) was able to.

The Maritime Museum will also be involved this year and will some events, but I wasn’t able to find confirmation that (despite the normal admission charge at the Maritime Museum) these events will be free.

To launch the market Santa will arrive at 17:00 and there will be a Fireworks Display. Santa will not arrive at the Harbour Plaza as in previous years, but at the front of the Royal Marine Hotel. The Fireworks display will be on Carlisle Pier and you should be able to see it from the Royal Marine Hotel.

One thing that won’t move, though, is the outdoor children’s amusements. That will stay on Harbour Plaza.

TRAUMA – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sat 21 Nov

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

How does trauma affect the brain, the body, the national psyche or all three? How do buildings, bodies, artworks and stories record the traumas of our past? How do we bounce back after a trauma?

The exhibition “Trauma – Built to Break” (20 Nov – 21 Feb) in the Science Gallery is exploring the biological, psychological and societal aspects of trauma. As a sudden, violent, stressful event, trauma can be short-lived or long-lasting with impacts that range from deeply personal to universal.

Like all Science Gallery exhibitions, TRAUMA is suitable for all ages and while younger children might need some further explanation, there are lots of exhibits that can easily explained.

The Science Gallery mediators are helpers (usually students or graduates) that know the whole exhibition inside out and are very happy to help with a lot more information than the little labels at the exhibits can provide. Use their excellent service!

The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.
Admission is free.

TRAUMA – Science Gallery Exhibition

12:00 – 18:00, Sun 22 Nov

I Believe Christmas Village

11:00 – 21:00, Thu 26 Nov

CHQ Building, Customs House Quay, Dublin 1

At George’s Dock and at the side of the CHQ building will be this year’s main Christmas market for Dublin. There is a Christmas Village (elsehwere you call that a Christmas Market!) and admission to it is free. Visits to Santa and a visit to the Apres Ski hut or tent (Apres Ski???) are not free.

The market runs every day from 26 Nov-23 Dec (Mon-Fri: 11:00-21:00, Sat: 10:00-21:00, Sun 10:00-20:00).

The Christmas Market will be on the platform in George’s Dock and at the side of the CHQ building, but there will also be activities and pop-up-shops in the CHQ building.

The launch will be on Thursday and it seems that 17:30 is the time for it.

The “I Believe” market has used very bold marketing statements and a good bit of fluff and blurb to promote this brand new market, so we will see how the real thing measures up against the claims! Read the “This is Odd!” next week and if it doesn’t measure up you know what the topic will be! ;-)

This is odd

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!

Crazy salaries in Ireland…here we go again!

Ireland is a tiny country with a small population and very limited economic potential. This is not a “put down” but are facts if you compare the country to most other European countries. Despite that, though, there are some crazy salaries paid in Ireland. The Taoiseach of a 4.5mio country earns more than the prime minister of the UK where twice that population is reached by one city. And he earns more than the French President. But he only makes a fraction of the best paid radio/TV presenter in Ireland. Crazy!

You would think that organisations realise that something is wrong and sort the problem? Not at all!

The latest scandal is about the exorbitant salary of the Secretary General of the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA). The IFA is a membership organisation with approx. 85,000 members and a budget of around 12 mio per year. And out of these 12mio, the General Secretary got a whopping 535,000 in 2013 (and still more than 400k last year). This is just mad!

I would find more than 150,000 too much for a position like that in a relatively small organisation, but more than 4 times that!?

The General Secretary who that got that amount of money, Pat Smith, has resigned on Friday when he realised that he wouldn’t get out of that scandal untainted and it is outrageous that he thought his job justified that amount, but there are a LOT more people that are involved in determining the salary in such an organisation and it really makes you wonder how deluded they all are to stand over more than 500k.

Odd?? You bet!!

An article in The Journal provides details: www.thejournal.ie/ifa-general-secretary-salary-2456214-Nov2015/
