Hi all!
This week could be full of good news and I won’t even consider the “or”. There is the soccer game against Poland, the rugby game against France and there is a budget announcement on Tuesday (and possible an announcement of a General Election).
[ad]
Let’s dream for a moment: Ireland will win against Poland and will qualify for the European Soccer Championship, Ireland will win the rugby against France and we get a significant tax reduction on Tuesday (I did say dream, right? ;-) )
How would you order these three things by priority? I.e. what do you want most? I have no influence over any of these three, but I did what I could to bring you a packed Dublin Event Guide with plenty of free events, so that even if none of the three works out, you can STILL have a great week! :-)
And here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!
And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 24,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help?
For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is www.dublineventguide.com.
————————–
Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 24,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s feel good slot is a very short video clip from a Chinese zoo. Baby Polar Bear is playing and suddenly slips and falls into the water. But Baby Polar Bear can’t swim!!
www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXmpvMl7Gsw
Mama Pola Bear immediately comes to the rescue, but here comes what I find most remarkable (not surprising, but remarkable!): Mama Polar Bear doesn’t push or pull the baby out of the water. No, she just stays close, encourages and watches. She helps with pushing the left back leg a little, but otherwise she lets the baby to sort it out itself. Mama Polar Bear is a good and caring teacher!!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Margaret W, Joan S, Nora O’K and David O’K were so wonderful to support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then please go to here and give something back if you can!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend ou HAVE to go to Sculpture in Context if you haven’t been there yet and if you want to see it. It is already the last weekend of that great exhibition in the Botanic Garden. And the Fusion Sunday World Culture market is happening again, I really like that market.
The Nutgrove Arts Festival, the Red Line Book Festival and the Maths Festival all take place as well (either this weekend or from Monday), maybe you will find something in the context with these festivals.

Castle Dracula, next to Westwood Gym, Clontarf, Dublin 3

You provide the prize for the competition and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) runs the competition for you. It couldn’t be simpler.
And if you want me to use/test a product you are selling and then share my assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing gear. ;-)

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

No Christmas Market at St. Stephen’s Green in 2015?
Last year Dublintown pushed the Christmas Market at St. Stephen’s Green in a big way and with massive goals.
I quote “Dublin’s first city centre traditional Christmas market expected to attract an additional 600,000 visitors and generate up to EUR 20 million in revenue for Dublin businesses, creating 150 seasonal jobs.” and I remeber even reading that Dublin will in a few years be a top Christmas market destination for tourists.
Well, it didn’t happen! Traders were very unhappy with the market, but on top of that it didn’t attract the masses and it certainly wasn’t a Christmas market any Christmas market expert would write home about. So many things were done wrongly! The location was wrong, the stall selection was wrong, the food business was the wrong one. I could go on and on. (Maybe I should provide my services as Christmas Market Consultant! ;-) Dublin needs one!)
Yesterday Dublintown sent out their Press Release regarding Christmas 2015 and there is no word about a Christmas market in it.
The mess that the Luas work causes doesn’t help at or near St. Stephen’s Green , but Dublintown (which is the trader organisation for Dublin) didn’t listen to Samuel Beckett who said “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.” The experiment last year failed (to a degree), but it would be better to improve it than to give up, at least Mr Beckett thought so!

General Election and Sport
There are speculations that if Ireland wins in the soccer match against Poland on Sunday it is near certain that the next General Election will be in November. And if Ireland also wins in the Rugby match on the same day, then it is a near certainty that the current government wants to use the enthusiasm in the country and quickly arrange for an election.
It is a very odd scenario that the Taoiseach can decide whenever he wants to have an election. The current term of the Dail is coming to an end on 09 March 2016, so an election has to take place before 08 April 2016, So, wouldn’t it make sense to have laws in place to complete the term before an election instead of deciding a date based on sports results?

Car Booster Seat needed for 1 week!
Dear Dublin Event Guide Community, I am looking for a loan of a car booster seat for nine days from 20-28 October for my (mostly) very well-behaved nephew and niece (6+4 years). They are coming to Ireland to visit me (with their parents), but to bring them around in the car, I need two booster seats.
If you could loan me one (or two), please send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com
I would collect it and bring it back to you again. Thanks!!

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Festival of Inclusion – Dun Laoghaire
10:00, Sat 10 Oct
Dun Laoghaire (various locations)
The Festival of Inclusion in Dun Laoghaire (10-17 October) really includes just everything and doesn’t seem to focus on anything at all.
There are events for Refugees, Men, Women, History Lovers, Alcoholics, Older People, Childcarers, Africans, Cancer Sufferers, Blind people, Grandparents, Ga y people, Holistic medicine followers and you wonder if some of the groups that are involved in the Festival of Inclusion were even ever EXcluded, considering that the events suggest that we have to INclude them again.
There are plenty of events taking place and they are all listed on this website. It seems that all events are free.

SECRET – Nothing To See Here – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 10 Oct
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.
Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.
I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.
From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.

How do Community Gardens Grow?
13:00 – 17:00, Sun 11 Oct
NCAD, 100 Thomas Street, Dublin 8
How do you setup and run a community garden? Hear about the lessons learned from two inspiring community garden projects: one in Dublin city centre and the other in rural Co. Clare.
You will start with a talking tour of the NCAD Community Garden on Thomas Street, hosted by Rian Coulter and Fabian Strunden. There you will harvest some of the produce from the garden and head over to the Fumbally Stables (a ten minute walk).
At the Stables, Matt Smith and Fergal Smith from Moy Hill Community Garden will talk from their perspective about what community is, how to succeed in keeping it going, and the lessons learned overcoming challenges in setting up Moy Hill.
Meanwhile a chef will work with what you have harvested from Thomas Street, along with some fresh veg brought up from Moy Hill, to create a dish for everyone to share.
Moy Hill Community Garden { www.growing.ie} is a group of community volunteers that have created a non-profit project in the Moy Hill Community, close to Lehinch, in County Clare. They were donated 2 acres of land by a local hero for a field and community garden that are used for growing organic and native fruits and vegetables, as well as for planting a native tree orchard to preserve our Irish heritage.
The NCAD Community Garden Farm { www.ncad.ie/gallery-event/view/growing-closer} was founded in January 2014 by the NCAD Students’ Union in partnership with community gardener Tony Lowth. The garden stretches from Thomas Street to Oliver Bond Street and is situated right next door to the college. This land was originally an empty, run down, unused site. However with a lot of hard work and creativity it has now been transformed into a wonderfully fruitful garden.
Admission is free. The event starts at the NCAD community garden which is accessed from Oliver Bond Street.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 11 Oct
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Unbound feet: the changing status of Chinese women – lecture
18:15, Mon 12 Oct
Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2
“Unbound feet: the changing status of Chinese women, c. 1890-1950” is a public lecture by Dr Isabella Jackson as part of the Trinity Centre for Asian Studies Public Lecture Series 2015-16.
“For almost one thousand years, most Chinese women had their feet bound to achieve an artificial smallness that corresponded to an ideal of beauty, but restricted movement and caused immense pain and suffering. The eradication of this practice in the early twentieth century was a huge achievement and stands as a symbol of both female emancipation and the end of the old imperial order with the fall of the last dynasty in 1911.”

Past, Present and Future of the Bogs of Ireland – Talk

“We have reached a crucial turning point in the story of Ireland’s peatlands, as the great bogs from which Bord na Móna has harvested peat for the last seventy years become depleted of their fuel reserves. The talk will review the history of the peatlands: their slow development over millennia, their ecological significance and their impact on culture and landscape, their exploitation in recent centuries: and the prospects for the future of the bogs of Ireland.”

Doors open at 18:00 and the debate starts at 19:00.

Dublin Animation Film Festival
10:00, Fri 16 Oct
Institute of Art, Design, & Technology (IADT), Kill Avenue, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin
The Dublin Animation Film Festival is most likely back (“most likely” because the website doesn’t seem to be fully up-to-date) on Friday and Saturday 16+17 October. The film screenings and award ceremony are not free, but if I remember it right, then there were some free talks on the Friday in the IADT in previous years.
My suggestion: If you are interested in maiking Animated Films, check out the website below on Monday or Tuesday. If it hasn’t been updated, maybe this year’s festival is not taking place and if it is updated, you should find all relevant information.

Festival of Inclusion – Dun Laoghaire
10:00, Fri 16 Oct

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Long Boat Quay: Fire Safety, Dublin City and Incompetence
Long Boat Quay is an apartment block on Sir Rogerson’s Quay that was built in 2006 by now-bankrupt builder Bernard McNamara and the building is now in the news because Dublin City has informed the residents that the apartment owners would have to pay EUR 4mio to make the building fire-proof or they will get evicted.
This is not the first time something like that is happening. Priory Hall in North Dublin is currently costing Dublin City 27mio to refurbish it and the residents were evicted there as well.
But how can something like that happen? Why are plans not checked before planning permission is given or before the building is built? Why is a building not checked before people are moving in to make sure that the building meets the specs? If efficient checks were part of the process at the right time, it should never happen that a building is later found inadequate!
Reading articles about Long Boat Quay, you wonder if the situation is not a good bit more complicated than it appears at first: Allegedly Dublin Fire Brigade gave the Ok for the building in 2011, but then seemingly withdrew this Ok in 2013. Could that be? That would be shocking and suddenly a large part of the fault would be with the Dublin Fire Brigade or Dublin City.
It also seems that where suddenly there is such a hurry now, last year things were seen less critical: The Irish Examiner writes that “an internal Dublin Fire Brigade report recommended the serving of a fire notice on Longboat Quay in May of last year”. So more than a year nothing happened and the building was not seen as dangerous, but now it is so urgent that the residents need to move out by 01 November?
The Irish Examiner article lists some of the defects that the Dublin Fire Brigade found, but when an RTE programme had a consultant engineer visit the place, he listed completely different issues. The enginneer said here that the building had been fitted with a fire detection and warning system designed to “suit a suburban semi-detached house, not an apartment in a complex in the centre of Dublin”. And that “most of the doors in each apartment looked fire-resistant but had no fire or smoke seals” and he was “particularly concerned” about the fact that there is no door between the kitchen and living areas.
RTE’s engineer obviously has different eyes or had a different focus than the Dublin Fire Brigade, but if the engineer RTE got is right, then I better quickly look for a tent or a bridge to sleep under, because the apartment I live in is then definitely not safe: One single smoke alarm per apartment; no automatic smoke vents in the public area; no fire seals at apartment doors and the door to the kitchen has never been closed. My eviction notice must be in the post! And what about apartments where kitchen and dining room are one?
Are there maybe different standards applied? Or are the experts checking these newer apartments the type of Health&Safety nuts that get palpitations when someone uses a bread knife or lights a candle with an OPEN FLAME. *shock horror*
There is incompetence somewhere, but can we be certain that we have identified the contributor with the highest incompetence yet?
Very odd!!

It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe.
