Hi all!
Do you feel a little lonely?
[ad]
Event Organisers seems to have expected that you would be! Because a few 10s of thousands have absconded from Dublin to go to the Electric Picnic in Co. Laois, they must have decided that the remaining 1.45mio are definitely not enough people to organise events for. ;-) How does it show? There are a few less and definitely not big events taking place this weekend.
But, hey, we will enjoy the weekend either way, right? Because many small events are sometimes better than one big event. ;-) So have a great weekend!!
Here is my weekly appeal to you: These are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your continued help with: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others!
And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 60,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goals are MUCH bigger than that! :-) Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Can you help?
For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is www.dublineventguide.com.
————————–
Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 23,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 60,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s feel good slot is remembering Dr Wayne Dyer (1940-2015), the self-help author and motiviational speaker who died last weekend from a heart attack. Wayne Dyer was a very inspirational person and his quotes will be repeated probably forever. I would like to share two quotes with you today that had an impact on many many people:
Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change.
and
Don’t die with your music still in you.
Both are in my opinion really powerful when you think about them for a few minutes.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Yvonne O’S, Gabriel K, Mark C and Roisin K were the wonderful people that did support the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a LOT!! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This weekend is a little less busy, so no big events, but a good few small ones. If you are interested, this is your last chance to go to a Summer of Heritage event in Dun Laoghaire and that is where I will go on Sunday.
On Saturday the Frontline Emergency Services invite to an Open Day in Trinty College and you could afterwards go to the SECRETS exhibition in the Science Gallery. It is worth a visit.
On Sunday the Pure Vintage Market and if you want to learn more, then the Which Course Expo should be on your list.
And because the weather is meant to be good this weekend, also consider going to the Botanic Gardens where the great “Sculpture in Context” exhibition is on show again.

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Public Wifi in Dublin is history?
I remember the launch. It was hailed as the greatest thing since sliced pan. Dublin got Public free Wifi about 2.5 years ago. In a very limited number of zones in the City Centre, Wifi services were provided by the Spanish company Gowex. The great thing for Dublin was that this service was provided for free, not only free for the users, but free for the City Council. Like many – I guess – I used the service on the first day and then never again and I would have loved to know what the actual user numbers were, but that information was never revealed.
Some while later Gowex got into trouble after the Chairman of the company admitted fraud and the company went subsequently bankrupt. The Wifi service in Dublin got interrupted at some stage this year and separately Dublin City terminated the contract, so it might or might not be working at the moment, but once the notice period is over, which is around November, Public Wifi in Dublin will definitely be history.
It didn’t last long.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

David Claerbout Exhibition
14-22 Aug (11:00-18:00) / 24 Aug – 11 Oct (11:00-20:00)
Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
The exhibition consists of a number of video installations by Belgian artist David Claerbout, but reading the description of the exhibition doesn’t explain anything at all, so you better just go and look at it.
Who writes that stuff? “Claerbout’s multiple video installation at Project Arts Centre will challenge conventions of exhibition-making, attempting to further our efforts to perceive what it is to exhibit while exhibiting.” Or this “His is a practice where burgeoning awareness creeps up on you as a viewer, nagging questions of authenticity start to haunt, and our idea of scale based on a fixed position in space becomes unsettled, destabilised, set adrift.”

SECRET – Nothing To See Here – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 05 Sep
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current exhibition in the Science Gallery (08 Aug – 01 Nov) is called “SECRET – Nothing To See Here” and explores Privacy, Surveillance and Espionage.
Once again it is a really interesting exhibition, that has some intriguing, fascinating and revealing exhibits. Be prepared to do a good bit of reading to understand the background of the exhibits OR get one of the well informed and extremely helpful mediators to explain the details to you.
I would say that SECRET is for a slightly older audience (maybe 16+), but there are plenty of things that younger children will get as well if you make the effort to explain it to them.
From an airport-style security conveyor belt that records what you have in your pocket; via a Wifi traffic eavesdropping device (Transparency Grenade); a secret handshake training device; books full of stolen passwords (you might find yours!?); a Crypto Bar where you can download cryptographic software, a privacy wall that hides your identity to an installation with notepads where the lines are microprinted lists of Iraqi civilian victims of the Iraq war, you will find lots of interesting secrets.
The Science Gallery has very visitor friendly opening hours of Tue-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00, so there are no excuses! ;-) Admission is free.

Smithfield Horse Fair
09:00 – 13:00, Sun 06 Sep
Smithfield Plaza, Dublin 7
The Smithfield Horse Fair was a long standing institution where for many years at the first Sunday in every month, horse traders (mainly from the travelling community) came together to sell and buy horses. If I remember right, the fair is a right that is firmly written down. However, bad treatment of animals, anti-social behaviour and other problems (even a shooting) turned this horse market into a nightmare for Dublin City.
It seems they couldn’t stop it or make it illegal, but they were able to limit the market to twice per year and so the newly regulated Smithfield Horse Fair takes place on the first Sunday in March and in September.
The September Horse Fair is taking place this Sunday and it could be a busy one. To bring a horse, traders need to buy a EUR 10 license for each and every horse, but will the rules stop bad treatments of horses by some traders? Most likely not. It will just happen elsewhere.
Should you go to the Horse Fair? Actually it won’t make the slightest bit of a difference! The traders will be there with or without an audience. By going you neither support the event nor do you show your opposition by not going. Yes, this sounds tough, but neither Dublin City nor the traders care much about the audience. The focus is elsewhere.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Fingleton’s Millions and the refugee crisis
Last Wednesday I came across two totally different posts on Facebook within just a few minutes and it struck me as very odd what world we live in.
The first post linked to an Irish Independent article about Ex-Irish Nationwide CEO Michael Fingleton, who met with the Banking Inquiry commission. In this article it was stated that Fingleton has managed to organise a pension pot of a very very comfortable EUR 27.6mio for himself.
The other – completely unrelated – post was a short video about MOAS, the Migrant Offshore Aid Station that was set up by Christopher Catrambone (USA) and his Italian wife Regina in 2013. It is a ship that operates six months every year to rescue as many refugees in the Mediterranian Sea as possible. And until today more than 11,000 lives were saved by them. The Catrambone family set MOAS up for around EUR 8 mio and it costs approx. 500,000 to run every month. They are currently struggling to get
I know, Fingleton and the thousands of refugees have nothing to do with each other. But does it not strike you as odd that there is one man who has 27.6 mio for himself, while elsewhere thousands and thousands of people will die, drowning in the water of the Mediterranean if not 3-6 mio can be found to fund the MOAS ship.
Imagine this: MOAS could run for FOUR years non-stop, save at least 20,000 lives and still leave Fingleton with 3.6 mio to enjoy his retirement if we did make Fingleton to create a link between these two news.
It is a VERY strange world we live in!!
If you want to support the Migrant Offshore Aid Station, because I doubt that we can rely on Fingleton to do it, go to this site here.
