Hi all!
I got this week’s Dublin Event Guide completed a little earlier, but not enough to make a difference. Nevertheless, I celebrate all successes (I have to! ;-) ) and use that improvements and build on it for next week.
[ad]
No long intro today, just getting the e-mail out to you!!!!
Have a great weekend!
There are two areas the Dublin Event Guide needs your help with: Your donations help paying the bills for sending the Dublin Event Guide every week, so please help if you can. Just 1 Euro per month (12 Euro per year) would be great. Not very many subscribers are prepared to or able to help, so please don’t rely on others! Last week, for example, not a single person did give any donation. :-(
And without you spreading the word we would have never reached 23,000 subscribers and 58,000 Facebook Likes. But it is just the start!! The goal is 50,000 subscribers and 100,000 Facebook Likes! Big goals, I know, but I believe we can achieve it! Imagine if everyone just got ONE additional person to subscribe to the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). That would be an immediate increase by a few thousand subscribers. Would be super!!!! Can you help?
For donations go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and the link to subscribe is here: www.dublineventguide.com.
—-
Here is the explanation regarding donations: To send the Dublin Event Guide and for domain names and for web hosting, I have a monthly bill of EUR 190 to cover. This is not for me, but all that money goes directly to external service providers. I am working approx. 35 hours on the Dublin Event Guide every week and don’t make any cent, that’s why I ask you to help with the cost if you can. If you can spare EUR 1 per month (that’s just 25 cent per edition!!) please donate EUR 12 for the year (or more if you can …or even less if you can’t). You can make your donation at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm using Paypal or CreditCard or send me a mail dublineventguide@gmail.com and I can suggest other ways. I am also looking for some corporate sponsors as well, if you know someone, send them my way. :-)
And please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent (but donations are very welcome!) for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 23,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 58,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, LivingSocial, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 190 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Today’s feel good slot is a little girl doing her thing: Audrey Nethery is a cute 6 year old from Louisville, Kentucky in the USA. Her parents posted some videos of her on YouTube and especially her Zumba videos became quite popular. The Feel Good Slot this week brings you a video clip where Audrey sings Talor Swift’s “You Belong With Me”: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ro20cQI_axU
Audrey is just an adorable child, but there is more to the story: She has “Diamond-Blackfan anemia”, a rare blood disorder. People with Diamond Blackfan anemia “have an increased risk of several serious complications related to their malfunctioning bone marrow. They have a higher-than-average chance of developing myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), which is a disorder in which immature blood cells fail to develop normally.”
And here are some more details,

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Signe Kristina K, Gerard B, Niamh D, Miguel N and Mieke H were the wonderful people supporting the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. Thanks a lot! Please keep in mind that without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 190 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week, I recommend the IFI Open Day and the Garden Squares Day on Saturday and also the Pedal in Phoenix Park event. On Sunday the Irish Cargo Bike Championship will take place in Phoenix Park and there are also some International Yoga Day events. You will find me in Phoenix Park on Sunday.

Obeo Food Waste Box Competition – Get into the recycling habit this summer
Fed up with your smelly brown bin? Then this invention might just be what you need.
The Obeo food waste box is the cleanest, easiest way to deal with food waste. It’s a compostable little box you keep on the kitchen counter, fill up over a few days then throw into the brown bin when full and simply start again with a fresh one. It’s water-resistant so it can cope with any wet or sticky food waste you throw in it. So wave bye bye to bin juice. And the great thing is there’s absolutely no smell.
Using your brown bin can save you money on waste charges AND it will help the environment. So if you haven’t started using it yet let Obeo look after the downsides of the brown bin.
Obeo gave you the chance to win a 6 month supply of their food waste boxes (worth EUR 40) so that should keep you recycling well past the smelly bin season. And the lucky winner was Caroline Martin! Congratulations!
In addition Obeo is offering Dublin Event Guide readers a special discount on their online shop www.weareobeo.com/obeo-shop. Just enter the code dubevent15 to get up to 25% off Obeo.

Promote your product or event through a competition!
If you want to reach more than 23,000 people with a product promotion or an event promotion for a non-free event, contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the options. You provide the prize for the competition and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) runs the competition for you. It couldn’t be simpler.
And if you want me to use/test a product you are selling and then share my assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing out gear. ;-) [Currently I am looking to buy a high spec Android mobile phone and an action camera and would happily “test drive” some candidates.]

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Riddle of the Burial Grounds
11 June – 01 Aug – 11:00-18:00 (Closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays)
Project Arts Centre, 39 East Essex Street Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Nuclear burial grounds (salt mines and other underground spaces that contain nuclear waste) are marked with signs today to warn about the dangers coming from them. But Plutonium, one of the nuclear waste products has a half-life of 24,000 years and maybe we can assume that it is gone after 10 half-times, which is 240,000 years!!
Now compare the wall paintings we find in caves or hieroglyphics with our ways of express information today. How can we ensure that even in 240,000 years the people living then will understand our warning signs and continue to protect and look after these nuclear burial grounds?
“Riddle of the Burial Ground” attempts to imagine a time in which language, signs and forms will be beyond our current comprehension and the 16 artists involved in this exhibition expressed this through sculpture, film, photography, documentary, fiction, science-fiction, history, landscapes and imagined futures.
Admission is free.

HOME\SICK – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 20 Jun
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is and also how it could be improved. The word means something different to everyone, but how will the future of technology and design, communities, families, resources, and nations change the nature of what we define as ‘home’?
HOME\SICK is the summer exhibition of the Science Gallery, which usually is the exhibition that is the most accessible and understandable for all ages and that goal was achieved again. It is not the Science Gallery’s best exhibition, but it is still definitely worth a visit.
The exhibition will run from 01 May until 19 July and is open from Tuesday-Sunday (Tues-Fri: 12:00-20:00, Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00). Admission is free.

Pedal in Phoenix Park
13:00 – 17:00, Sat 20 Jun
Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
Part of the Bike Week, which will come to an end on Sunday is “Pedal in Phoenix Park”.
The event takes place for the 6th year, but the organisers are not very forthcoming with details. The Facebook Page doesn’t know that event yet despite promises on the Bike Week website, but at least that website tells us that there will be a “tented village with food stalls, bike checks, bike rides, stunt bikes, bike polo, bike treasure hunt, kids Sprocket Rocket cycle training, another ‘Meet the Fawns’ bike tour, great prizes.”
Chesterfield Avenue in the middle of Phoenix Park is blocked for car traffic from the entrance to Aras an Uachterain and that’s where the tents will be lined up along the road. This doesn’t create much of an atmosphere for any type of event and the number of visitors to these Chesterfield events are often very disappointing. Let’s hope that “Pedal in the Park” on Saturday and the “Irish Cargo Bike Championship” on Sunday in the same place will be different.

Biodiversity Monitoring Talks
14:00, Sun 21 Jun
Farmleigh House, Castleknock end of Phoenix Park, Dublin 15
Biodiversity Monitoring Talks will take place over three Sundays (14+21+28 June) in the Arkle Room of Farmleigh House.
As many species of pollinators (bees, wasps, etc) continue to decline around the world, the need to monitor them has increased. The pollinators now rely on us to provide them with a healthy habitat and in turn provide us with food and beauty. By learning a few simple steps to help provide a healthy environment, these species can then continue to provide us with useful functions such as pollination.
The talks will cover various interesting aspects of Biodiversity Monitoring in Ireland including species identification, how to set up a monitoring transect & how to increase pollen and nectar sources in you garden.
The event will start with a 25 minute Biodiversity presentation in the Arkle room followed by a 25 minute outdoor exploration to view some species on Farmleigh grounds. (Weather Permitting).
Admission is free and tickets will be distributed on a first come first served basis at the guides reception desk of Farmleigh. For further information contact farmleightours@gmail.com or call 01 815 5914.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 21 Jun
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

The Internet, Warts and All? – Lecture
16:00 – 17:00, Tue 23 Jun
Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square, Trinity College, Dublin 2
The lecture “The Internet, Warts and All?” by Dr. Paul Bernal (Lecturer in IT, IP and Media Law, University of East Anglia) looks at what we think of and about the Internet.
“The debate over the right to be forgotten has revealed a lot of illusions about how the Internet works in practice. Many of the objections to that right seem to have been based on beliefs that the Internet is some kind of a perfect historical archive.” Dr Paul Bernal will suggest that until we start to be more realistic about the Internet, until we see the Internet ‘warts and all’, our approaches to regulation and management of the Internet are likely to be misguided or counterproductive.
Admission seems to be free.

First F*ckUp Night
19:30 – 22:30, Thu 25 Jun
Harbour Playhouse, 30 Avenue Road, Portobello, Dublin 8
“Ireland’s First F*uckUp Night – Failure Sucks, But Instructs” will take place on Thursday and admission is free. Organised by Dublin2020 and the Centre for Creative Practices, thsi events will see a number of speakers from all walks of life open up for the first time about their failures and talk about how these failures have helped them to learn and to recognise success.
Speakers at the first event include: Chris Gordon, CEO of Treehouse, Head of the Irish Social Enterprise Network; Dr. Mary Lou Egan, Economic strategist, Bendick and Egan, Washington DC and Keith Payne, author, poet and critic plus more to be confirmed.
In Dublin three monthly events are planned where Dublin will share stories of failure. The speakers will be varied: artists, architects and people from the words of technology, green, social and business. Each of them tells their story in 10 images, each projected for 40 seconds and at the end of each story the audience asks questions.
Why talk about all these failures?
+ Because failure sucks, but instructs.
+ Because one can learn more from stories of failure than from stories of success.
+ Because the majority of professionals don’t create the “project of the year” in their first attempt.
+ Because people feel the need to break free from the stigmas surrounding “failure”.
Admission is free. I am not sure if tickets are required or if it is first come first served, but the organisers did put the event on Eventbrite, sou you might as well book there just in case you need the ticket. The link is here.
Please note, Portobello is a bad place to park a car, so use public transport OR park on South Circular Road, which is only 3 minutes walk from the Harbour Playhouse.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Clery’s closure – The Shock and the Outrage
Last Friday morning it was announced that Clery’s has been sold. (Why do people spell it “Clerys” if the company was clearly called “Clery & Co Ltd”?) And only a few hours later it was followed by the announcement that the company had closed down with immediate effect and went into liquidation with the loss of all jobs.
First there was shock. A department store in an iconic building in the middle of O’Connell Street closing down is certainly an unexpected event, but Clery’s is not just any department store, it is the oldest in Dublin and generations and generations went to it in the past. But that is also the problem: The people that went to it were your parents and grand-parents! Younger generations, however, didn’t make it there too often anymore. Between August 2012 and January 2015, the business lost allegedly EUR 4.3 million and that is not a good basis for a shop.
During the “Shock” phase, many expressed their disappointment with the closure, but as some people said on Twitter and elsewhere, if only 20% of the disappointed people sometimes had bought in Clery’s it would possibly not have closed! It was also mentioned that this is the end of an era because now people can’t meet “under the clock at Clery’s” anymore. First of all, the clock is not going as far as we know. So you can still meet under that famous clock and even if the shop will at some point get a new name, the clock will most likely still be there. Secondly, the “meet under the clock at Clery’s” idea is one from pre-mobile phone times, when (and many probably don’t remember these times ;-) ) people had to be in a certain pre-arranged place to meet – and sometimes waited there for ages until their punctuality-challenged friends arrived. With mobile phones, it seems that also landmarks like this clock become superfluous. And seemingly Clery’s got – in many people’s life – as superfluous as the clock.
The shock was replaced by outrage over the treatment of the employees. The closure was sudden and unexpected and the employees will probably only get minimum (statutory) redundancy even if they worked there all their lives. That is definitely painful and will cause a lot of stress and hardship in the affected families. But it seems that there is a good bit of disingenuity in the statements politicians made about this as at the surface it seems that there is not much they can or will do.
The company was seemingly badly managed for some time and the previous owners tried to get out. The new owners wanted to buy the property, not a department store and were prepared to pay some undisclosed amount of money for that. The previous owners probably knew the state the company was in and the new owners probably did so as well. In an ideal world for the employees (and customers), they would have all pre-announced the closure a few weeks in advance, would have reserved enough money to pay a nice redundancy package to the workers, would have given deposits from customers back and then would have closed at the agreed date. But unfortunately an ideal world does not exist and with serious debts and a new owner who has no interest in a) running a shop and b) increasing the debts, there was no interest in continuing a loss making business for even one additional day. It makes business sense, but is brutal if you are on the receiving end. Will politicians or unions do anything else than pay lip-service and be outraged ? Very unlikely!
What next? The building will continue to be there and it is expected that – once the dust settles – the new owners will either get a big department store to move in (House of Fraser or John Lewis would come to mind, but might not be interested at all) or the building will be subdivided in many smaller shops in the form of a mall/shopping centre and rented out in pieces. And the future for the employees? Unfortunately it is bleak.

You are receiving this newsletter because you have subscribed to it!!
If you don’t want to receive this mail anymore, just click on the link at the bottom of this mail. It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
