The Science Gallery exhibition “HOME\SICK – Post-Domestic Bliss” looks at the Home and asks what “Home” really is and also how it could be improved. The word means something different to everyone, but how will the future of technology and design, communities, families, resources, and nations change the nature of what we define as ‘home’?

HOME\SICK is the summer exhibition of the Science Gallery, which usually is the exhibition that is the most accessible and understandable for all ages and that goal was achieved again. It is not the Science Gallery’s best exhibition, but it is still definitely worth a visit.

Canalphonics is a free Music and Culture Festival that is sponsored and supported by Dublin City Council’s South East Area Office in partnership with Dave Judge of Abner Brown’s Barbershop. It will take place on Friday 08 and Saturday 09 May in Portobello and Rathmines.

On Saturday from 13:00-21:30, bands will play on the Making Waves Stage on a barge at Portobello Harbour, followed by a wide range of gigs and club nights in 22 venues in the area.

On Saturday barges participating in the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland’s Dublin Rally will arrive and there will be a boutique market at Portobello Harbour from 11:00-21:30 with barge trips and family fun activities.

It is a world culture market, an ethnic Bazaar, that focuses on the diverse ethnic culture present in Ireland today. The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

To mark the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Concentration Camps, the European Parliaments office is screening a number of films and on Tuesday, the film is “The Boxer and Death”, which is screened in cooperation with the Embassy of Slovakia.

The Boxer and Death is a 1962 Slovak film directed by Peter Solan, the film is based on the life of Polish boxer Tadeusz “Teddy” Pietrzykowski. – In a Nazi concentration camp, an escapee awaiting execution is spared when the commandant, a former prize-fighter, discovers the prisoner has amateur boxing ability and makes him his exercise partner. A story of human degradation, where the only chance of survival is to accept the rules of an unequal game.

Roland Monsegu from CaminoWays.com will be in 53 Degrees North to talk about the French Way / Camino Frances of the Camino de Santiago. Starting in St Jean Pied de Port at the foot of the Pyrenees, the French Way crosses the North of Spain all the way to Santiago de Compostela. It will take you over a month to complete the whole route, but you can also start in other towns along the way.

The screening of “Into the Sea” in the IFI is part of Clean Coasts Week which is organised by An Taisce – The National Trust for Ireland.

The documentary follows the story of the first surfers in Iran, a story shaped by three young women – Irish pro surfer, co-founder of Waves of Freedom and Clean Coasts Ambassador Easkey Britton, Iranian pro snowboarder Mona Seraji and Iranian diver Shalha Yasini. Together they planted the seed for new opportunities and made history, becoming the first women to surf in Iran.

It is the recognition of the power of surfing to transcend social, cultural and gender barriers that inspired Easkey and director Marion Poizeau to found the non-profit organisation “Waves of Freedom” which uses the power of surfing as a creative medium for positive social change.

Kadam Bridget is the New Kadampa Tradition National Spiritual Director for the UK & Ireland. She is known for her powerful teachings, compassionate heart, and deep understanding of Buddha’s wisdom advice. She has been practising for over 20 years and she teaches throughout the UK and Europe.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

The book “CAM, An Irish Solution to a Global Question?” by Bernadette Ward will be launched.

CAM stands for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and the book is based on research that explores CAM communities across the globe, and uses Ireland as one example of the emergence of a vibrant CAM community. It explores the lack of government recognition and inclusion of CAM in healthcare choices in most countries of the world, despite public demand. And it discusses the growth of unsupported CAM private training and public service industries across the world, delivering lifelong learning and second chance education, creating employment to meet industry demand.

The Warrenmount Community Education & Development Centre is inviting to four Cultural Taks over the next four Fridays. The first one is on 08 May and looks at “Broadway Musicals” from the 1940s and 50s.

In his lectures on 08+15 May, John Allen will explore the history of this uniquely American theatrical phenomenon as it developed during the 1940s and 1950s. John’s lectures will be illustrated by many recorded excerpts from the shows featured.

Join the maker, woodturner Emmet Kane on a tour of the new exhibition “A Journey: Twenty Seven Years of the work of Irish Woodturner Emmet Kane”.

The next Tiny Tot Workshop for Ages 3 and under and their grown ups will be in Friday. Kids will have fun exploring colours, shapes and sounds with storytelling and art. The title this time is “Noah’s Ark” with Elaine Leader.

The 14th Skerries Traditional Music Festival will take place from Fri 15 – Sun 17 May. There are a number of non-free events, but in the evenings and during the day outdoors there are a whole range of Sessions in the pubs/venues of Skerries and they seem to be free.
