Hi all!

Last weekend I was in Galway because Orla+Brian, friends from the Gardiner Street Gospel Choir, got married. Congratulations! :-) Having made the trip, I holidayed for the first time in many years again in the West of Ireland. The weather was slightly mixed, but I have to say, I had one of the best weekends in years. Three great days, amazing how the right “ingredients” can make you feel good and you don’t even have to travel to the other side of the world for that. :-)

This week a number of festivals take place in Dublin, but the free events are not as plentiful as I would like. The G ay Film Festival, Cinemagic (a youth film festival) and the Dublin Dance Festival are ongoing or starting. And Bealtaine, the art festival for the slightly older generation is continuing as well. Bealtaine, however, has lots of free events and if you are in the age category around or above 55, you should definitely check bealtaine.com/

Well, this week even I find it difficult to identify some MUST-GO events. Not that there are no interesting events on, but there is nothing that tempts me so much that I DEFINITELY want to go, apart from Centre Stage 2009 on Sunday maybe. Maybe I will just wait and see how the weather is going and if it is good then I might stroll around the City Centre a bit or leave Dublin for another weekend? I know the coming weekends will be busier, so maybe that is the calm before the storm? :-P During the week I would love to go to some TrinityWeek lectures (see Monday), but unfortunately they are during working hours. Next Thursday I will try to go to the EYP event. So, this week I won’t give you any strong recommendations, but I hope you will find some things to do. :-)

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS – IRISH WRITERS’ CENTRE
The Irish Writer’s Centre made two free Creative Writing courses available for two readers of this Event Guide to win. This is a GREAT prize and many many of you entered the competition. I was glad that I didn’t have to choose, but only had to do a random draw, because I would have liked to give a free course to everyone who entered. :-) One interesting thing I noticed was that quite a number of the people who went to the trouble to explain a little about why they are keen to win the price (Thanks for that!!) mentioned financial constraints as the main reason for not doing this course that they wanted to do for a long time. I know that no two people are in the same situation, and for some the financial constraints are so severe, that there is just NO option of spending money on a course, but if you are in the “inbetween” state and you feel passionate about moving forward, then try everything to get the money together. Assess your finances, identify areas where you can save and then invest in your passion! It is not too late yet for this season term! PLASTIC BAG CHARGE AT DUBLIN AIRPORT
It was good while it lasted, but now Dublin Airport has stopped giving out resealable plastic bags for free to carry your liquids in your hand luggage on board. Nearly all airports are charging between 50 cent and 1 Euro for two of these bags for quite some time already and now Dublin Airport has introduced this as well (1 Euro for two bags). Just be prepared when you fly out the next time! You can bring your own bags that you bought in a supermarket, but remember they have to be resealable and must not be larger than 20cm x 20cm. I know that both conditions do not make the slightest bit of sense, but breaking the rules in this scenario will mean risking the loss of expensive perfumes, crèmes, lip-sticks or similar.

RECESSION FOCUSES THE MIND
Have you heard about the Video/DVD Rental company that managed to accumulate losses of EUR 15 million?? I am still amazed about the HOW! The company went into examiner ship and a lot of suppliers lost huge amounts of money because onyla  tiny percentage of the outstanding debt was paid back, but at least a solution was found to save 172 jobs: www.rte.ie/business/2009/0428/chartbusters.html
Another company, Xtravision, is trying to capture the customers with a different approach: For the month of May all DVDs are 1 Euro per night. Now, don’t ask me how EVER a charge of 8 Euro was justified! Oh, it was for two nights and for two films, I know, but why would I want a film for TWO nights? I never understood the thinking behind it and consequently did not rent any films. With 1 Euro per film per night, the story is different! If I had the time to watch a film, I would definitely use that offer (however, I would probably stay away again if the prices go up after May). www.xtravision.ie

The current economic situation requires many of us to be a lot more flexible, innovative and to venture in new directions. No government can’t turn the ride around! They can balance the books – or at least try to, but the solution will not be found by the government. In my opinion only courageous individuals will be able to trigger the turn around. CLIMATE CHANGE LECTURE – UCD EARTH SYSTEMS INSTITUTE
The UCD Earth Systems Institute is inviting to a weekly seminar about climate change. The Dublin Dance Festival will take place from 08 May – 23 May, but unfortunately there is only one single free event in the whole two weeks. The Temple Bar Cultural Trust and Phantom 105.2 work with the Dance Festival on providing a free Headphone Disco on Meeting House Square in Temple Bar on Fri 08 May from 19:00-23:00. Gates Open at 18:30 and the event is free but ticketed. Tickets can be
collected from Dublin Dance Festival Box Office at Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre and hopefully the organisers are so flexible to let people without tickets in, if there is still room on Meeting House Square. Since this is the Opening Night for a Dance Festival, it is, however possible, that the event will be very very popular and will be booked out. I would suggest you try it and if you get in all is well, if not , then enjoy one of the many (free) music venues in Temple Bar. :-) Make sure that you have some radio and headphones, if you want to enjoy the event, because the music will not come through speakers but through the radio (Phantom 105.2)

The Irish Aid Centre on 27-31 Upper O’Connell Street is inviting all children from 8-10 to Children’s Workshops on African Stories and Crafts on Sat 02 May and every Saturday in May. GARDENING WEEKEND – BLANCHARDSTOWN SHOPPING CENTRE
Get into Gardening this weekend, with Dermot O’Neill at Blanchardstown Centre! It seems to be a sign of times that more and more people in Ireland are turning to gardening, particularly to grow their own food. Allotments (pieces of land on which you can grow your own produce) seem to be available more and more around Dublin and are hugely popular. With that in mind, Blanchardstown (Shopping) Centre will be launching their “Get into Gardening Weekend” on Saturday 09 and Sunday 10 May.
Well know gardening expert Dermot O’Neill will be in the Centre on Sunday 10 May, to give free gardening talks at 12:00 and 14:00 about the benefits of Gardening and growing your own vegetables. No booking is necessary, but spaces will be limited and seating will be allocated on a first come basis. There will be EUR 500 worth of gardening prizes on offer.
Redlough Landscapes will be on hand over the weekend to offer landscaping and design advise, potting demos etc and will be offering one lucky visitor a EUR 1,000 Garden Make-over/Design!

MEET YOUR MAKER – IRISH DESIGN SHOP
The Irish Design Shop in Bow Lane, Dublin 2 is hosting their first ‘Meet Your Maker’ event on 09+10 May 2009 from 11:00-18:00 each day. Irish makers will sell directly from individual stalls outside the Irish Design Shop on Bow Lane East, opposite the Mercer Hotel. A variety of products will be available, from ceramics and t-shirts to jewellery and textiles and the designers will be available to explain their products. Neillí Mulcahy was one of Ireland’s leading fashion designers during the 1950s and ’60s and a founder member of the Irish Haute Couture Group in 1962. TRINITY WEEK 2009 – ENERGY & SUSTAINABILITY
The Trinity Week 2009 has the title “Energy & Sustainability” and will take place from 11-15 May in Trinity College Dublin. Trinity Week is an opportunity for everyone to go back to university for a week of lectures and symposia etc. Energy & Sustainability as the guiding theme brings a range of topics to the table and the Faculty of Engineering, Mathematics and Science has formulated a programme of symposia, events, films, debates and workshops all of which are free.

EU PARLIAMENT WORKSHOP
The European Elections are near and now the candidates for the European Parliament remember that there was somebody that they represented – some while ago – and who now might or might not vote for them again. So, they are having a renewed interest in talking to us little people again. ;-)
The European Anti-Poverty Network (Ireland) will facilitate an all-Ireland series of training workshops and discussions to ‘bring Europe closer’ to people who experience poverty and social exclusion (and their organisations). These will take place in advance of the European Parliament elections (05 June) and the event in Dublin will be on Thurs 14 May.
All candidates for the European Parliament elections have been invited to the workshops to engage with individuals and groups who experience issues around social exclusion, poverty and inequality.
Each event includes two sessions (one in the morning and one in the afternoon):
– training on how the European Parliament operates, and its importance in addressing poverty and social exclusion;
– an opportunity for participants to meet with candidates for the European Parliament elections. EAPN Ireland will chair an informal discussion and questions and answers session for participants and attending candidates.

MV LOGOS HOPE IN DUBLIN
A seemingly charitable project to bring low priced books and cultural exchange around the world is making station in Dublin. The MV Logos Hope has 300 volunteers on board and is on its way to London for the official launch, the MV Logos Hope will be in Dublin on Sir John Rogerson’s Quay from 14-24 May. The charity has a Christian background and is a seafaring mission as far as I understand. Check their website www.logoshope.org/ for more information. The ship can be visited for a donation of EUR 1 and a tour is available for EUR 3. So the event is not totally free, but EUR 1 is nearly free. ;-) In addition you can buy books on board for reduced prices. NATIONAL PRINT MUSEUM LECTURE
“Bound Together: A ‘Renaissance Prince’, A Scribe, and a Bookish Saint” is the title of a lecture by Réiltin Murphy in the National Print Museum on 14 May from 19:30.
Admission is free.
Until its recent move to UCD a bound manuscript rested four centuries in Franciscan care. The book’s beauty drew the attention of Reiltín Murphy in 1997 when it was exhibited in the National Gallery of Ireland while she was looking for an MA subject to follow a BA in Calligraphy and Bookbinding. This unusual binding houses an Ulster manuscript dated 1532. It is a Life of Saint Colum Cille by Manus O’Donnell and is in the hand of scribe Eoghan Carrach O’Siaghail.
This talk looks at various aspects surrounding the book: at questions surrounding the unusual binding; at the formal Irish Minuscule script written at a time when the author is reputed to have considered having his book printed; at that great book enthusiast Saint Colum Cille; and at the modern forms which Reiltín developed from the study.

VISION AND LEADERSHIP???
Imagine the company you are working for is not doing as well as you would like it, the customers are reasonably positive about you, but they don’t really endorse/buy your product as much as you want. The head of your company might be good, but nobody knows because he doesn’t come across as a capable boss at all. His leadership skills are either not there or VERY well hidden. Now your company realises that they need to employ a new Sales Manager. And the selection process is underway. Who would YOU recommend? A person who has a strong vision and has leadership skills and is someone people feel motivated by? Or someone who has never (yet?) shown any vision or leadership, but only delivered a backward perspective full of negativity and full of bad bad depressive views?
I am not sure about your preference, but I would search until I found the visionary, the leader, the motivator!
Not so one of the opposition parties! Fine Gael decided for the OTHER candidate. Odd, isn’t it? The candidate is Mr. Doom & Gloom George Lee, who has brought the most negative and pessimistic views to your dinner table in evening news and other RTE programmes. I find it odd that the man that is the messenger of the most depressing news and who happily made them sound worse and worse is now suddenly meant to provide vision and leadership so that people will vote for him.

Issue 99 of the Event Guide is done! I am looking forward to No. 100!! Can we make the grand slam of reaching 4000 readers by next week? Can you help? It would be GREAT to celebrate the 100th issues and the 4000th reader at the same time, don’t you think. But I need your help with it!! ;-)

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with the Subject “Subscribe”.

BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby.
