Hi all!

The “Britain Got Talent” stories continue and this week I came across the following snipet: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVU4IkzMNIo This time it is not as amazing as the Susan Boyle story. Not because the singing is not good, but because it is about a 12 year old boy, who obviously has his life still ahead of him. The link I got from Darragh D, who supplies his followers with all that information.

…which brings me on to something else: No, I have not joined a cult or something. The word “followers” is used in the Twitter world and describes the people that read or at least have subscribed to your Twitter messages. Yes, you guessed it, I am experimenting with Twitter. Twitter is a kind of a bill board system for short messages (140 characters) and I started using it last week to see what it is and how it works. Hey, Computer Science & Computer Engineering is my background and Telecoms is my day job, so I have a keen interest in all these things. If you use twitter (www.twitter.com), you can find my by looking for “JoergSt” and if you wish you can “follow” me. At least for the moment, I don’t intend to use it for Event Guide related messages, but instead it will be more about other things that I come across in life. But since the Dublin Event Guide has become a big part of my weekly life, you can be certain that regularly event related information will be posted there for as long as I use Twitter (The jury is still out on the usefulness of it for me!).
If you have never used Twitter, you can go to www.twitter.com, sign-up to the free service and start using it by “following” me. Have a go, it is an interesting idea. So interesting, that the recent facebook home page change was intended to make the facebook home page more twitter-like.

From today until next Tuesday I will be at a seminar from 09:00-21:00 each day. Some of you know that one of my many interests is NLP and I finally will go to a NLP seminar. Should be good and I am looking forward to it. Even if giving up my weekend, not being able to spend the off-work days with the wonderful people in my life and not being able to go to events is not so nice. But I am sure I will come out of the course motivated and buzzing. ;-)

Here are my plans for this week:
I will be at a training course from today (Fri) until Tuesday everyday from 09:00-21:00, so there will unfortunately be no time to go to events. So, this week, I will lsit here the events I would have gone to, if I hadn’t been at the 5-day course.
On Friday, the French Friday is a must if you have the slightest interest in all things French. On Saturday I would have definitely gone to the Festival under the Clock. In addition you should go to Infectious in the Science Gallery if you haven’t been and The Rescue (Invisible Children) deserves your support. In the evening the Big Band performance by Midnight Swing would have been something for me (I played for a number of years bass guitar in a 25-people Big Band!)
My Sunday would be busy as well. The Dublin Flea Market and the newly discovered Sunday Market in Santry would definitely be on the list.
I will let you make your own decisions for the events during the week. Film buffs should go to the Cine Café or the Pint & Picture event, all girls/women should have a look at the Fashion Evolution Festival and for people with time during the day, the “Let’s Walk and Talk” event sounds interesting.

CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOPS – IRISH WRITERS’ CENTRE
After some turbulent times, the Irish Writers’s Centre is back and doing what they do best: Providing help and support to Irish Writers. In the past, the Writers’ Centre made some brilliant competition prizes available to the Dublin Event Guide Community and I am very pleased to tell you that their support for the Dublin Event Guide continues.
The Irish Writers’ Centre is widely regarded as the leading provider of creative writing courses in Ireland. And starting at the end of April and the beginning of May, the Centre provides a wide range of courses for writers at all levels and stages of development (aspiring, emerging and mid-career) facilitated by experienced creative writing tutors and high-profile writers.

TOLTEC SELF MASTERY TALK – TICKET COMPETITION
On Wed 22 April Don Luis Molinar, an international teacher of Toltec Mastery was in Dublin for an introductory talk on Toltec Self Mastery.
Don Luis Molinar is a Master teacher in the Toltec tradition, an ancient path of self awareness and knowledge from Mexico. This teaching has been around for centuries in Mexico and went underground on the arrival of the Spanish into Mexico.

FLAMENCO CLASSES
Solo Flamenco, the wonderful Dublin-based talented Flamenco team, have started their new courses last week and had a pair of tickets available for a competition, but unfortunately the winner of the tickets couldn’t make it and in the end it was too short notice to pass the tickets on to the next person in line. But Solo Flamenco have assured me that they will have more events coming up and that they will make more tickets available in the future, so hopefully all will work the next time.

QUEUE OF 500 APPLICANTS
On Wednesday I heard on the radio that people were amazed about scenes at the top of Grafton Street. A massive queue was stretching from the Londis Shop on Stephen’s Green (between Grafton Street and Dawson Street) down all the way into Grafton Street until Korky’s or the “3” shop. This was some MASSIVE queue and it turned out that all the people in the queue wanted to apply for some Sales Assistant jobs in Londis, who seem to have offices above the Londis shop. LOTS OF CRUISE SHIPS IN DUBLIN

DAME STREET BUS GATE IDIOCY
Despite a huge amount of objections, the Dublin City Council Transport Committee has decided to put a “Bus Gate” on Dame Street at College Green from 07:00-10:00 and from 16:00-19:00 from Monday to Friday. This means that during that time no private cars are allowed to drive into Dame Street or leave Dame Street at College Green. In my opinion this is a crazy decision. I would be in favour of a complete pedestrianisation of Dame Street and a renovation of the whole street but to let busses and – even worse – taxis still drive in a traffic-calmed area is turning any traffic calming into a joke. I seems that the Dublin City Transport Committee have their own agenda which is not in line with what the citizens of Dublin want but I expect that in relatively few years the whole City Centre will be cut off from traversing traffic while not the slightest improvement in public transport has been achieved. www.rte.ie/business/2009/0421/dublin.html

IRISH MUSIC SESSIONS
Aine B, an Event Guide Community Member, told me that herself and some friends have recently started playing Irish Music in a pub called ‘The Pint’ on Eden Quay and she is inviting everybody to come along to join in, sing a song, have a dance or just listen. They are in The Pint every Tuesday and Wednesday night from around 21:00 and admission is free. I will come along at one evening in the coming weeks and maybe you want to do the same. And say Hi to Aine if you are there! :-)

The current economic situation requires many of us to be a lot more flexible, innovative and to venture in new directions. No government can’t turn the ride around! They can balance the books – or at least try to, but the solution will not be found by the government. In my opinion only courageous individuals will be able to trigger the turn around. JONATHAN BARRY: DRACULA – PEARSE STREET LIBRARY
Only a few more days you can visit this exhibition in Pearse Street Library during Library Opening Hours. Until 30 April, Dublin City Council is proud to present an exhibition of Dracula oil paintings by Jonathan Barry as part of their One City One Book Project celebrating the famous novel Dracula. The Exhibition includes a rare collection of original oil paintings by the artist, which are on loan from Fingal County Council, Dublin City Council, and various museums nationwide. Jonathan Barry has illustrated several versions of Dracula, and the Exhibition includes other Gothic novels he has illustrated for the UK publisher Wordsworth Classics. These include the titles Carmilla, The House by the Churchyard , Frankenstein, The Fall of the House of Usher, Wuthering Heights, Great Expectations, and The Hound of the Baskervilles.

FROM CONTEXT TO EXHIBITION – EXHIBITION & TALKS, THE LAB
As part of The Learning Development Programme – NCAD, DIT, IADT, Tisch School of Performing Arts NYU managed by Create, the national development agency for collaborative arts, ‘From Context to Exhibition’ presents the work of undergraduate arts students made collaboratively with communities of place and/or interest from 23 to 30 April 2009 at The LAB, Foley Street.
The ‘exhibition’ explores and questions the politics of translating the work from the context of production (the community) to a formal arts space (the gallery), and will be accompanied by a Talks Series. The events will be launched by Peggy Shaw, international performance artist, on 23 April 2009 at 18:00. The Talk Series timetable is as follows:
1. 24 April 2009: ‘What Isn’t Socially Engaged?’
From 18:00-20:00 Faisal Abdu’Allah, an artist whose work evolves primarily from the interface of photography, the printed image and lens-based installations, will be in conversation with Prof. Mick Wilson.
2. 25 April 2009: ‘Producing Communities’
From 12:00-16:00 an open Roundtable Discussion will be held with participating communities and student artists, chaired by Paul O’Neill, currently GWR Research Fellow with Situations at the University of the West of England, where he is leading the international research project Locating the Producers.
3. 27 April 2009: ‘Towards a Critical Pedagogy’

INFECTIOUS: STAY AWAY – SCIENCE GALLERY
From 17 April – 17 July the Science Gallery will host “Infectious: Stay Away”. INFECTIOUS will explore mechanisms of contagion and strategies of containment through a range of exhibits, experiments and epidemic simulation. INFECTIOUS at the Science Gallery will allow you to probe everything from the immune system to insidious viral marketing and catchy tunes. INFECTIOUS features singing crustaceans, virus sculptures and simulated outbreaks and is an event where the participant helps spread the experience. BABY CHILL ZONE – DUNDRUM TOWN CENTRE
Baby Chill Zone from Clap Handies will be available in the Shopping Centre the last Saturday of every month. The Baby Chill Zone, which is especially for babies from “zero to crawling”, will provide a resource for both you and your baby to take a break from the buggy and stretch your legs, with sensory equipment, activities and fully-trained staff from Clap Handies to ensure an interactive and engaging session for you and your baby. FESTIVAL UNDER THE CLOCK – RATHMINES
The Arts Management and Production class from Rathmines College are inviting to the FESTIVAL UNDER THE CLOCK, a segment of Rathmines Festival. THE RESCUE – INVISIBLE CHILDREN
Katrina L, a long term Dublin Community Member told me about this interesting and positive event: “On 25 April 2009 the organisation Invisible Children will be hosting a worldwide event attended by thousands of young people called The Rescue. Invisible Children is a global social and political movement that seeks to create awareness about the war in central east Africa through the creative use of media. The Lord’s Resistance Army, a rebel army led by Joseph Kony, has been waging a war for over 23 years, affecting thousands of civilians in Uganda, Sudan, the Central African Republic and the Congo. Children are the most affected – the LRA has been, for many years, abducting children from their homes to become child soldiers. “The Rescue” is a rally held in 100 cities around the world to attract media and political attention to this issue and pressure the government to commit support to the protection of civilians in war-affected zones and see the arrest of Joseph Kony. Hundreds of young people will symbolically abduct themselves and sleep outside in solidarity with the child soldiers until a figure of cultural or political influence arrives to rescue us and make a public statement showing support for our cause.”
And this is what will happen in Dublin “We will be meeting at St. Patrick’s Cathedral at 15:00 and marching to Merrion Square, where we plan to stay overnight. The park will be open for people to join the event until 20:30. Participants are being encouraged to bring musical instruments to the event and to create art in the public space.
We will have about 30 volunteers leading the event. Donations of food, chairs and other supplies would be welcomed. This is an alcohol-free event.”

FASHION EVOLUTION
“Change more than your clothes” is the motto of this event. Ireland’s annual ethical fashion week, FASHION EVOLUTION, will take place in Dublin from 26 April – 02 May. This year “Fashion Evolution” will re -dress current consumption patterns and habits and will call for Irish consumers and industry leaders to get active through swapping, knitting, skilling-up, talking and learning.

This initiative comprises weekly walks in various parts of the City, themed historical walking tours and other special events. PINT & A PICTURE SHOW
The ‘pint and a picture show’ is a free screening event that shows a full-length film (feature or documentary) preceded by several Irish shorts that have been shown at film festivals and/or on television; frequently there is an informal Q&A session with one (or more) of the filmmakers whose work is being screened on the day, immediately after their film is shown. CLIMATE CHANGE LECTURE – UCD EARTH SYSTEMS INSTITUTE
The UCD Earth Systems Institute is inviting to a weekly seminar about climate change. The next public lecture will take place on Fri 01 May from 12:30-13:30 in The Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, 6 Kildare Street, Dublin 2. The topic is “Peat slides in Ireland – causes and prescriptions” by Dr. Mike Long, UCD School of Architecture, Landscape & Civil Engineering. PHANTOM FIRST FRIDAY
The radio station Phantom 105.2 is running a “First Friday” event every month and on 01 May the First Friday returns to Andrew’s Lane Theatre with live music from

BEALTAINE FESTIVAL 2009
From 01 May – 31 May the Bealtaine Festival 2009 will take place. “Bealtaine is the national arts festival celebrating creativity in older age. Join over 55,000 people all over the country, taking part in events involving music, art, dance, cinema, writing, theatre, heritage and more. Bealtaine is your chance to try something new, to share your talents or to come back to something you haven’t done for years. So come and join in the celebrations!” The festival is specifically for the “older” generation and while “older” is not clearly defined, it seems that the minimum suggested age is 55. The Dublin Event Guide Community has an average age that is somewhere in the 30s and – unfortunately – the information about the existence of this Event Guide is only slowly spreading amongst the slightly older age groups. For the moment, I will therefore remind you of the Bealtaine Festival, but will not list specific events here during the month. Instead, please have a look at bealtaine.com/node/93

DANGEROUS TOURISTS IN LONDON
Do you know Asterix + Obelix? When Obelix comes across odd customs/habits and rules in remote countries, he tips his finger to the side of his head three times: Toc, Toc, Toc and says “These Romans [or wherever he is] are crazy!” This week he definitely would have said “These Brits are crazy!”

POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK?
Do you know this saying? It even has a Wikipedia entry! (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pot_calling_the_kettle_black) The “pot calling the kettle black” is closely related to the saying “People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.” …it was the first when I read the article about this one cocktail that breached alcohol promotion rules: www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/eyauqlmhojcw
There was a pub in Portarlington that gave in October one single cocktail for free to each of its female customers and they were now told that this breached alcohol promotion rules. I agree with the fact that alcohol shouldn’t be given away in large quantities for free and I do think that – as had been reported recently – binge drinking is a serious problem in Ireland. But the amazing thing in this case is that the organisation that judged this publican from Portarlington is MEAS (Mature Enjoyment of Alcohol in Society) which is an alibi organisation that is funded and founded by the drinks industry. Diageo (the owners of Guinness), Heineken, Beamish+Crawford and the Vintners Federation are – among others – the members of MEAS. www.meas.ie/page.php?intPageID=119 Hmmm, Diageo sent me a little while ago discount vouchers for cans of Guinness and another time vouchers for free Guinness. Does that mean that MEAS is the pot and the publican in Portarlington is the kettle?
