Hi all!
This week I experienced a big problem! I had a busy and exhausting week and you might know that to compile the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) I sacrifice two nights of sleep (Thursday and Friday) and work through the night. But this week I was just not able. I constantly fell asleep at my computer and wasn’t able to get on with the work. As a result this Dublin Event Guide is so late that it is really a joke. I mean, what use is an event guide if it is sent after lunchtime on Saturday?
After checking in with approx. 3500 of you (via the Facebook Page), I decided to update the mobile version (which also works in all other browsers) of the Dublin Event Guide immediately and to continue working on it until all is finsihed and THEN you will get the full mail. It is a compromise and I hope it works for you. Thanks for your understanding!!
Over the next few days and weeks I will have to do a lot of deep thinking because the way things are going at the way is not the best way. If you have help or advise let me know via dublineventguide@gmail.com. (By the way, it is unfortunately not possible do do a weekend version of the Dublin Event Guide and to send that first and then send the rest.)
And here are my pleas to you, which are getting a little more urgent week after week:
The Sponsorship I was able to get helps hugely to take a certain amount of financial pressure off me, but it is not enough! I need to make some urgent changes to the system that I use and need someone who is good at CakePHP programming and SQL databases. That will cost! So please continue your financial support. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some additional corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Regarding your donation, I am suggesting the super low amount of just EUR 1 per month. These EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints, isn’t it!? Please…and Thanks! :-)
And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 22,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 53,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week the Feel Good slot comes with mixed feelings!
Last night I found out that a friend of mine has died. Her family and close friends knew that she was ill since late last year and that there was no hope anymore, I didn’t know that she was ill and I really am shocked. I met Lisa, who also was a Dublin Event Guide subscriber, a few years ago on my personal development path and worked with her during some courses in the past and we had a good few chats and discussions about life and work, but in recent years we were just “Facebook Friends”. I wish she had told me about her illness, but most of us are not very good at sharing the dark sides of our lives.
Lisa was just 39 years old, had a son and a daughter and had only in the last few years found a really good and calm place in her life. It is sooo sad that she is gone.
But she loved life and expressed that to the end on her Facebook Page, so today the Feel Good Slot is one of her last postings, a quote by speaker and author Anita Moorjani:
“The present moment is very powerful.
Each moment holds promise and each moment can be a turning point for the rest of your life.”
Make use of that moment and don’t waste it, there is only a limited number of moments available to us all.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Brian H.P., Mélanie B and Gwen M supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. I really really really appreciate all the help! Without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week, I am so late that I embarrassed crawl into a corner and let you find the best events yourself OR alternatively, have a look every day on the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page.
Back again here next week!

BUY FROM AMAZON VIA THIS LINK TO HELP THE DUBLIN EVENT GUIDE
Postage to Ireland is free for most orders if you buy for more than GBP 25! And with every order via this link, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) gets a small commission: |
|
Promote your product or event through a competition!
If you want to reach more than 23,000 people with a product promotion or an event promotion for a non-free event, contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the options. You provide the prize for the competition and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) runs the competition for you. It couldn’t be simpler.
And if you want me to use/test a product you are selling and then share my assessment here in the Dublin Event Guide, we can talk about that too. I like testing out gear. ;-) [Currently I am looking to buy a high spec Android mobile phone and an action camera and would happily “test drive” some candidates.]

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

Dublin Docklands Christmas Market CANCELLED
With the new Christmas Market for Dublin around St. Stephen’s Green, the location of the market for the last 8 years got a raw deal and the Christmas Market at George’s Dock (next to the CHQ Building) was cancelled.
It doesn’t help for event diversity in Dublin that both the Temple Bar Cultural Trust and the Dublin Docklands Authority have/will be closed down and all responsibilities will be handed back to Dublin City. Consequently Dublin City is not overly interested in competing Christmas Markets.

The former “Opportunities” section is now Eventbrite’s section to highlight some of the events they – as the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) would particularly like to bring to your attention. The vast majority of the events listed here will be free, but if it is a really good event, there might sometimes be a non-free event in the list as well. (It will be properly tagged!)
BRITE SPACE IS KICKING OFF ON MONDAY – HURRY BEFORE ALL EVENTS ARE FULL!
Starting on Monday 17 November, Eventbrite will take over 42 Dawson Street in Dublin for seven days, transforming it from an empty space into a pop-up called Brite Space Dublin. 21 events in seven days will highlight and explore the future of live experiences in Ireland.
All events are free and include complementary food and/or drink, pre-registration is essential, as spaces are limited. Voluntary donations are appreciated and will be passed on to The Simon Community.
One of the events to look out for in particular is the panel “How events can change our world“, with free coffee from McCabes and a healthy breakfast by Staple Foods.
View the full program and register for free at www.britespacedublin.com/
The eclectic mix of events includes indoor bike racing with the Bike Institute, a variety of panel discussions, a raw foods workshop with Lovin’ Dublin editor Emma Kennealy, a Dublin history talk and whiskey tasting with Ingenious Ireland, a workshop on how to create your own Madonna 90s style bra with Zaria Design, as well as movie, music and Playstation nights. Everybody is welcome!
Event organisers – and aspiring ones – are invited to join inspirational panel discussions on a wide variety of topics, like new digital marketing techniques, self promotion for bands, fundraising trends, inbound marketing, how to design impressive events and many more.

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Solus – Born 2 Win – Culture Box
Culture Box, 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Street Artist Solus is inviting to his second Irish solo Exhibition entitled “Born To Win”.
It is a tale of “Triumph over Tragedy”, overcoming adversities and a coming of age suggesting a new found confidence and growing up and growing into those once seemingly enormous gloves as depicted in some of his works and street pieces.
Having returned home to Dublin after a successful summer in New York and Toronto, Solus has returned with a fresh perspective and a new desire to get back into the studio painting.
There are 20 paintings in the new exhibition and it will be on show in the Culture Box from 20 Nov for just one week.
The launch will take place on Thursday from 18:00-20:00 and the first 25 people in the door will get a signed mini-print.

A Visual Odyssey Into Invisible Worlds
09 – 30 November
National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
This exhibition by Karl Gaff takes you on a visual odyssey to explore the richness, complexity and the sheer beauty of places far beyond the limits of human vision. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to enter the micro to nanoscopic realms of nature and conduct a type of photography called ‘micrography’.
Explore treacherous mountain ranges on a single grain of pollen, probe the steep valleys, ridges and rolling hills on the petal of a flower, venture through jungles of high rising spikes emerging from the surface of a leaf and much more.
The exhibition is open daily in the visitor centre.

Shaped by History
01 Aug – 05 Jan (Mon-Sat: 10:00-17:00, Sun: 12:00-17:00)
National Photographic Archive, Meeting House Square, Dublin 2
Shaped by History features 95 black and white photographs of Limerick Milk Market taken between 1971 and 1978 by Limerick social documentary photographer Gerry Andrews.
Limerick Milk Market was founded in 1852, as the west of Ireland was emerging from the famines of the 1840s. In the 1970s, Limerick Milk Market was at a crossroads in its long history, as the Shannon/Limerick region began transforming into a national and international model for development.

Blood – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 15 Nov
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.
25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.
But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.
An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.
If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.
Admission to the exhibition is free

Printfest – Science Week event
12:00 – 16:00, Sat 15 Nov
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4
Printfest is a really interesting event because the National Print Museum suddenly comes to life and is transfered from a museum to a buzzing hub of information, facts and stories about printing, typesetting and other nearly forgotten crafts. Volunteer printers and typesetters demonstrate highlights from the Museums’ collection and tell you about their jobs and challenges many years ago.
The Printing Press was one one of the most important inventions for education and science and without it, today’s world would be dramatically different.
There will also be plenty of family friendly activities.
Admission is free.

St Stephen’s Green Christmas Market
12:00 – 20:00, Sat 15 Nov
St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2
This year the first ever City Centre Christmas Market takes place in Dublin and it was overdue. Because we don’t have a proper square in the centre for a market like that, it had to become a long row of wooden huts and it remains to be seen if the market atmosphere works in that configuration. Approx. 60 traders will be at the market selling handcrafted items, art, Christmas presents, food products etc. and there will also be food and drinks stands. The Christmas Market will run until the 23 December.
(I wonder how they will manage to overcome the fact that it is illegal in Ireland to consume alcohol in a public street. Non-alcoholic Gluehwein?)

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Sunday Sketching for the whole family takes place every Sunday and admission is free.
During these workshops we explore paintings, sculpture and some of the architectural features of Charlemont House through discussion and drawing.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
Dublin Christmas Light Proceedings – Odd from start to finish!
I don’t know where to start! There are so many weird and outright odd things about the Dublin Christmas Light Proceedings that I could write pages and pages.
But let’s start with the barriers in our city first. No, I am not talking about physical walls, they would be easy to take down. Instead I am talking about political, commercial and social walls! And they are here to stay!
Dublin City has THREE not one Christmas Lights event. Why? Because Northsiders can’t with Southsiders and vice versa and the traders organisation “Dublin Town” can’t do it with Dublin City and vice versa. So as a result there was a Switching on of Christmas Lights in Grafton Street on Thursday 13 November, one in Henry Street on Sunday 16 November and then there is the Christmas Tree in O’Connell Street, which will be switched on two weeks later on 30 November.
Doesn’t make sense in the slightest, but, hey, it is three mini festivals for people to go on the street, so I guess we shouldn’t complain.
Apart from that, the Christmas Tree Lighting is the main job of the year for the Lord Mayor and why would we need a powerless Lord Mayor if it wasn’t for switching on the Christmas Tree!?
They could press ONE button in the middle of O’Connell Bridge, but it seems that we are happy with the walls we have. – Oh, and I better shut up about the SEPARATE Christmas Lighting event just a stone-throw from the City Centre, at Smithfield, right?
The next odd thing is the timing and I am not growing tired from pointing this out year after year:
Bringing the Christmas Lights so much forward to mid-November can only be driven by the wish or hope to extend the Christmas buying period through this “trick.” The thinking must be that if people start buying two weeks earlier, they will spend more money throughout the 6 weeks up to Christmas. But is that really the case? I don’t know about you, but I still buy the initially intended number and type of presents for the people I need to get presents for. As it all culminates in that one event, there is no “buying more”. Even if the Christmas Shopping period (as defined by the lights) ran for 4 months, I would still buy the same number of presents. So a longer Shopping Period makes absolutely no sense from a commercial point of view with regards to present buying.
Where it might make sense is for people who come to the City and who normally wouldn’t come. No, this is not the country folk, this is tourists…in a few years time! Until last year Dublin City was void of a good Christmas Market. This year a new approach is taken and the Christmas Stall Row (It is one long row along St. Stephen’s Green, not a market in the usual sense.) still has to prove itself, but it could work and if it does, that’s a great thing. Mind you, though, visitors won’t know about it for a while because traditionally Dublin is void of good Christmas market and that is the reputation we have.
Will 600,000 additional visitors come to Dublin because of the Christmas market as Dublin Town claims? And will these 600k people leave EUR 20mio behind in shops, restaurants and hotels? Maybe in a few years time if the Dublin Christmas Market manages to become as good as the Nürnberg or Vienna Christmas Market, but until then, these figures are total nonsense.
BUT…Christmas is a great time of the year, so let’s enjoy it and let’s hope that the Christmas Market will be a big success!

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
