Hi all!
This is interesting: Last week I sent the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) on Friday evening close to 20:00. The week before I sent it on Saturday morning close to 10:00. But despite the MUCH earlier sending last week, only 0.5% more people opened the mail in comparison to two weeks ago. Hmmm, does that mean you love the Dublin Event Guide no matter when it arrives? :-P Just wondering!
I hope you had a great Halloween and are now ready for what is often seen as the greyest month of the year: November. But there is light at the end of the tunnel. It is light in the form of CHRISTMAS lights and I am not talking about December. NO! The Christmas lights are already coming on on 13 November. Yes. MUCH too early, I agree, but at least it lightens up November a bit. :-)
I mentioned last week that both donations AND new subscriptions have dropped a good bit over the last 3-4 weeks, so I need your help!
Sponsorship, like the one from the sponsors (including Eventbrite) helps hugely to take a certain amount of pressure off me, but it is not enough! I need to make some urgent changes to the system that I use and need someone who is good at CakePHP programming and SQL databases. That will cost! So please continue your financial support. You can help here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I am also looking for some additional corporate sponsors. Maybe two or three companies that are prepared to help with a little more than the individual donations of around 12 Euro. If you know anybody, send them my way. :-) Regarding your donation, I am suggesting the super low amount of just EUR 1 per month. These EUR 12 is just 2 pints and for the equivalent of 2 pints you get 52 issues full of information about free cultural events. That’s DEFINITELY worth 2 pints, isn’t it!? Please…and Thanks! :-)
And finally – I can’t say it often enough: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 22,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 52,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week the Feel Good slot features a video. It’s a simple little video of a dad singing with his two daughters “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri. But that little video clip has been seen 2.6mio times. Have a look here www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAafNm-on50 and then decide yourself if the clip is suitable for the Feel Good Slot here.

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
To cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide I need your help and every week generous and nice Dublin Event Guide readers help with a donation.
Last week Meav Ni M, Sinéad J and GiveAffirmations.com supported the Dublin Event Guide with a donation. I really really really appreciate all the help! Without donations there won’t be a Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events): Your donation will ensure that the Dublin Event Guide will continue arriving in your Inbox every week and every donation will benefit EVERY Dublin Event Guide reader!
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to here and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page. If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

The main sponsor is Eventbrite and their support is hugely appreciated! Eventbrite enables people all over the world to plan, promote, and sell out any event, and has sold over 200 million tickets and registrations worldwide, totalling more than $3 billion in gross ticket sales. Eventbrite is free for free events. The online event registration service makes it easy for everyone to discover events, and to share the events they are attending with the people they know. In this way, Eventbrite brings communities together by encouraging people to connect through live experiences.
All events listed in this Event Guide are free of any admission charges (or at least appear to be free) unless otherwise stated. I try to find confirmation in all cases and do my best to double-check the information. However errors can happen and therefore no promise for correctness can be given.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
After everyone went full out over the last few days, celebrating Halloween and running Halloween events, it seems there is not much petrol in the tank left. This weekend will be a quiet one.
There are plenty of gigs, but otherwise a few less events. But that is an opportunity to check out the Science Gallery exhibition or maybe once again visit a museum or to try out the Pure Vintage Market (on Sunnday) or the D-light Market Party (on Sunday) or if you would liek to buy some Vintage clothes to check out the Folkster Vintage Clothes Kilo Sale (also on Sunday).
Have a great weekend whatever you do!

The Beatles Show – Ticket Competition
Sunday 09 November – 13:30
Twisted Pepper, 54 Middle Abbey Street, Dublin 1
The Beatles Festival in Dublin will take place from 07-09 November. One of the events during the festival is The Beatles Show.
The Beatles Show will consist of a performance of the comic play “Death and the Beatles Fan” plus Beatle songs performed live by Vyvienne Long and Jonathan Ward. Vyvienne is a very talented singer-songwriter who has released two solo albums and a brilliant Beatles EP. She has played cello with many Irish and international musicians – and is best known for her work with Damien Rice. She has also enjoyed huge radio hits with her own song ‘Happy Thoughts’ – and her cover version of ‘Seven Nation Army’ by The White Stripes. Here is her great cover version of ‘And I Love Her’: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXIYO7MyppU
Tickets for the show are EUR12 each and can be bought here: entertainment.ie/tickets/dublinbeatlesfestival/5041.htm
And for one Dublin Event Guide reader The Beatles Show will be free, because I have a pair of tickets for a competition for you! If you want to enter, send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with BSHOW in the subject line and with your name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. Your mail has to be with me by 12:00 on Tuesday 04 November.
And here is some more information about the Beatles Festival:

Help the Dublin Event Guide! It won’t cost you a cent!
Do you enjoy free events? Does it help you to find out about all these free events simply in one e-mail magazine or on one website? Does the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) deliver all this for you and maybe even more? In that case, you probably also would want it to continue forever, right?
To achieve that some money is needed. Donations are a great help, but not everyone feels they can donate at the moment. So here is the solution: If you could help with a donation without having to pay a cent from your own money wouldn’t that be cool? You can!!
When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
Book Depository
Amazon
And when you buy from Living Social or Groupon use these links:
Groupon
LivingSocial
When you buy holidays (from Lastminute.com, Expedia or Hotels.com) or other products buy them via clicking on the links below:
HMV | O2 | Vodafone | Pixmania
Expedia | Lastminute.com | Hotels.com
When you click on the link and then buy, your books/products/holidays etc cost exactly the same as if you went to the website directly. But if you go via the links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8% of what you spend as a commission. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it would amount to a fair amount of crucially important money. Use the links often, actually EVERY time you buy from the relevant site, not just once!
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) THANK YOU!!!
And if you want to donate money directly, then you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm

The Minimalists Tour – BIG Fail & Apologies
The Minimalists Tour is a book promotion tour by Joshua Fields Millburn & Ryan Nicodemus, who write about living a meaningful life with less stuff. Millburn and Nicodemus were in Dublin on Friday and chose the completely wrong venue, knowing full well that it was too small. Big Fail!!
I got my (free) ticket already in December 2013 (!!) and was really looking forward to the event. But when I arrived at 18:55 on Friday, myself and between 25 and 50 other people were told that we would not be allowed in, because the venue (Hodges Figgis in Dawson Street) was full.
The event was promoted for nearly a year and still until the day before the event it was possible to book tickets. People travelled quite some distance to come to it and made specific arrangements to be able to be in the City Centre at 19:00 on a Friday. I also promoted the event in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) last week and I would like to apologise to everyone who was left outside in the rain like me! If organisers mention anywhere that it is admission based on first come, first served and you won’t get in, it is disappointing, but you were warned. But if an event is ticketed and as a ticket holder you are refused entry, it is a massive fail!
The organisers definitely knew that the event was seriously overbooked and that the venue was MUCH too small, because everyone needed to book a ticket. Most likely Hodges Figgis told them what the max capacity is and Millburn and Nicodemus still went for that venue.
Myself and most other people there were fuming when we were turned away and I will make my disappointment known to “The Minimalists”. There are plenty of other venues in Dublin that would have easily accommodated the full number of people that were interested, but they wouldn’t have been free. (Hodhes Figgis possibly was free.)

Public Transport Prices going up again
Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann, Luas and Irish Rail are all increasing their charges significantly from next week. If you are a public transport user make sure you know what is coming your way …and consider the LEAP card which will come with increased ticket prices as well, but is a lot chaper than the cash ticket prices.

Sooooo, here is the change for this section: The plan is to change its use from “Opportunities” to a section that will bring you the best events that Eventbrite, the main sponsor of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), promotes. The vast majority of the events listed here will be free, but sponsors have some additional liberties and if it is a really good event, there might sometimes be a non-free event in the list as well. (It will be properly tagged!)
With the change of use of this area, I will also see if I can change the title of it, but I have long left the field of programming, so I will see what I can do. Which brings me to a question I wanted to ask you anyway: Are there any Cake PHP programmers in the house? Let me know if you are!
EVENTBRITE’S EVENT PICKS FOR THE WEEK:

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Blood – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 01 Nov
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.
25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.
But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.
An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.
If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.
Admission to the exhibition is free

Design & Hardware Hackathon
13:00 – 00:00, Sat 01 Nov
DCU Innovation Campus, Old Finglas Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 11
Ireland’s first Design & Hardware Hackathon takes place this weekend over 36 hours from 01-03 Nov at the DCU Innovation Campus. It’s a weekend that brings together over 100 makers, creatives, engineers, designers, product managers etc., to come up with ideas and prototypes for the products of the future.
The event is not free (EUR 40 used for food and supplies), but there will be a number of free workshops on Saturday for everyone for IoT/hardware equipment including Intel’s Galileo development board. A screening of “Maker: The Movie” will take place to inspire participants and spur creativity.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to identify which event components are free and which aren’t on their website, so I am told that there are free events, but I don’t know when, what and how to get in without ticket.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 02 Nov
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Betty Swing Machine – Gig
20:00, Sun 02 Nov
Sweeney Mongrel’s, 32 Dame Street, Dublin 2
Betty Swing Machine is a swing band from Dublin with 3-part vocal harmony, guitar and double bass. They perform swing standards, originals and barbershop tunes, mixing old and modern arrangements.
And this part in their description made me giggle:
“Throughout their set they offer a musical and visual performance, in which the 3 singers’ coordinated dance moves bring some swing fever into the air!” ;-)

Imitators 2 – MART Gallery Exhibition Launch
18:00, Wed 05 Nov
The MART, 190a Rathmines Road Lower, Rathmines, Dublin 6
IMITATORS 2 @ The MART Gallery is opening on Wednesday with Sake and Sushi for all.
MART curators Ciara Scanlan & Matthew Nevin have collaborated with 3 Irish Artists, and 3 Japanese artists to create and interactive and challenging exhibition. The show is the culmination of a residency in Kyoto arts centre in the summer 2014. The narcissism of modern culture; selfies, minor feats of ‘fame’ and our obsession with self indulgent self promotion via social media has changed how we live day to day. The project involves artists Ciara Scanlan & Matthew Nevin, [ curators of MART www.mart.ie] working alongside Trish McAdam a filmmaker and Artist, Andrew Carson a Visual Artist and Róisín O a singer to utilize their talents from their own disciplines to analyse the process of ‘imitation’. Takahashi Kohei, Takesi Ikeda, Makiko Yamamoto are artists based in Kyoto Japan whose work on show is based on mimicry.
All works on show are video and we will set each piece up so the audience interacts and ‘imitates’.
The exhibition runs from 06-14 November (daily apart from Monday: 13:00-18:00)

19:30, Thu 06 Nov
Irish Writers’ Centre, 19 Parnell Square North, Dublin 1
Alan Titley talks about “Neither Shillelaghs nor Shamrocks: The Other Irish Novel”: The novel in Irish begins in the late 19th century as it did in most European countries. Since then about three hundred have been written and some have gained the status of classics amongst readers in the Irish language. This talk (which is in English!) will look at some of those classics and aims to evaluate them both in their own time and for ours.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. ;-) If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section and I am VERY serious about that!
The big scare: “Forecasters predicting big freeze this winter”
The Irish Examiner printed the headline “Forecasters predicting big freeze this winter” on Thursday. It is the yearly sensationalism that is based more on hot (or cold) air and less on facts, but an expert is quoted that seems to substantiate the dramatic headline.
Interestingly, British newspapers wrote just two days earlier that with a beefy new GBP97mio super computer, the UK Met Office will from September 2015 be able to “to give forecasts six days ahead instead of the current four and calculate temperatures for the next 24 hours with up to 90 per cent accuracy. Currently, it can only do so for 12 hours.” See article in The Telegraph.
So 6 day forecasts in the UK and two month forecasts in the Irish Examiner? Well, if you read the whole article in the Irish Examiner you will see that the quoted expert is a LOT less committal than the headline suggests. Which means, that in the end it is just another sensationalist headline of a newspaper and there is no need yet to search on YouTube for the “How to build an Igloo?” video. These videos are there, though, in case you need them! :-)

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
