A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. Waterways Ireland, Happenings and the Balloon Man are behind the Paint it Pink an event on Saturday, which will turn the Grand Canal pink for one day.

Hundreds of pink balloons will be attached to the locks along the canal. The event is being held in memory of members of the Plurabelle Paddlers who have died from breast cancer and to mark the finale of the Irish Cancer Society’s Paint it Pink campaign which ran during October.

The film screening of “Pretty in Pink” is one of the highlights.

A remembrance walk at 16:00 from Portobello Bridge to the Waterways Visitor Centre at Grand Canal Dock is another highlight.

BLOOD is the title of the new Science Gallery exhibition that will run from 24 Oct – 25 Jan.

25 exhibits explore the symbolic, scientific and strange nature of blood and there are certainly some “out there” contributions. For example the video and relics from a bio-art performance where an artist had a blood transfusion form a horse. Or a spoof brand that uses bloodstain-formed fashion accessories addressing the stigma about men strual blood.

But there are quirky things as well, like the Jukebox that will guess your age by taking your pulse rate and playing a song from your teenage years. And there are some practical aspects: You can take a test that will determine your blood type and you can find out what happens to to donated blood in Ireland.

An interesting exhibition, but different than what you have seen before in the Science Gallery and that is reflected by the recommendation that the exhibition is only suitable for over 15 year olds.

If you are ok with the focus on this red substance that makes some of us a bit queasy when we think about it, you should definitely go to the exhibition (and bring an open mind ;-) ). But if blood makes your knees wobbly, then it might not be for you.

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Ireland’s first Design & Hardware Hackathon takes place this weekend over 36 hours from 01-03 Nov at the DCU Innovation Campus. It’s a weekend that brings together over 100 makers, creatives, engineers, designers, product managers etc., to come up with ideas and prototypes for the products of the future.

The event is not free (EUR 40 used for food and supplies), but there will be a number of free workshops on Saturday for everyone for IoT/hardware equipment including Intel’s Galileo development board. A screening of “Maker: The Movie” will take place to inspire participants and spur creativity.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to identify which event components are free and which aren’t on their website, so I am told that there are free events, but I don’t know when, what and how to get in without ticket.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

The next Pure Vintage Fair will take place this week and it is what it says on the tin. A market/flea market for vintage items, which will take place on the first Sunday of every month. There will be vintage clothes, furniture, collectibles, jewellery and many more vintage items. Sounds interesting and with 30 stalls, it is well worth a visit. There will also be food, hot drinks and a DJ.

The Terenure Village Market will take place again on Sunday. There will be live music, kids entertainment (e.g. face painters, balloon makers or magician) and food and craft stalls. The market takes place every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month.

D-light studios are inviting to the next Market Party. There will be stalls with original, hand made products, you can listen to live music and relax having a drink, dancing or watching a movie. Kids cinema (14:30), Live DJ, pop up Café and gourmet food are other features. Admission is free.

Folkster is a vintage clothing shop in Kilkenny and Dublin and they are bringing their Vintage Clothing Kilo Sale to Dublin again. The clothes won’t be sold per item, but per weight with 1 kilo costing EUR 20.

Admission is free, but it is HUGELY popular and therefore up to 4-hour queueing has been an issue in the past. To avoid that, you can collect up to two tickets from 08:00. Then you can go somewhere else but have to be back by 11:30 (it seems even if your entry is only hours later!?)

Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

Brian Keary is a classically trained guitar player who also has experience of different styles / genres of music ranging from ragtime and folk to baroque and contemporary. He will perform in Sweeney’s (Ground Floor) on Sunday afternoon.

Golf Ireland’s “Time to Play – Festival of Golf” is a free golf event at the Ballsbridge Hotel on Tuesday. “Through the genus of portrait photography, Amelia Stein (photographer, Aosdana) explores the intrinsic qualities of fine black and white photography and print, in which to evoke universal themes of loss, memory and meaning in some of her most celebrated photographic projects. To follow this talk Trish Lambe (Gallery of Photography, Dublin) will steer an open discussion with Amelia Stein.”

Bernard Brogan and some of his Dublin Football teammates (Alan Brogan, Paul Flynn, Michael Darragh MacAuley, Paddy Andrews) will work a shift on the grills and tills in Nando’s in Blanchardstown Shopping Centre to raise money for Aware.

All proceeds from the night will be donated to Aware, the national depression support, education and information organisation and there will also be a charity raffle on the night with some great prizes including signed footballs, shirts and Nando’s gift cards which will help the team raise even more money for Aware.

Every Tuesday an informal sing along with Ukulele and Toy Musical Instruments takes place in the Stag’s Head. Just bring your instrument and come along. Beginners are welcome. Every Tuesday a Jazz Jam Session will take place in the Grand Social and you are invited to listen or even to participate. Admission is free for musicians and audience.

Instruments are supplied (drums (no cymbals), double bass, guitar amp, bass amp, PA system) and ideas and themes will be proposed prior to the session to the musicians who join the event on Facebook (see Facebook Page below).

The Phoenix Big Band is a 16 piece band playing songs of the 1930s, 1940s and other big band arrangements and they are playing every Tuesday in the Tara Tower Hotel (since 2012!) for adult dancing. If you like to waltz, cha cha or foxtrot, come and enjoy their performance.

A totally unplugged Singer/Songwriter night (no PA, no microphones) with original music is taking place upstairs in Anseo every Tuesday from 21:30.

Entry charges at nearly all OPW sites are waived once a month. The Office of Public Works (OPW) wants to encourage people to visit the historic sites that it manages and has therfore started this initiative in 2011.

Most OPW owned sites can already be visited for free, but the sites that normally charge a fee will be free every first Wednesday as well. In the (extended) Greater Dublin Area this means you can visit the following sites for free:

+ Dublin Castle, State Apartments
+ Kilmainham Gaol
+ Brú na Bóinne Visitor Centre at Newgrange

As you can imagine, this event is very popular and therfore it is strongly recommended to arrive early at the venues. Once the day’s tickets are given out, you will not get access anymore.

Another Wednesday Walk will take place in and around Phoenix Park. Weather permitting, walkers will meet at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre (VC) or Farmleigh House (F) at 11:00. Each walk takes about 90 minutes.

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. There are many Spanish speakers and English-speakers are explicitly invited, but everyone else is certainly very welcome too, to meet for a chat to improve your Spanish or English.

IMITATORS 2 @ The MART Gallery is opening on Wednesday with Sake and Sushi for all.

MART curators Ciara Scanlan & Matthew Nevin have collaborated with 3 Irish Artists, and 3 Japanese artists to create and interactive and challenging exhibition. The show is the culmination of a residency in Kyoto arts centre in the summer 2014. The narcissism of modern culture; selfies, minor feats of ‘fame’ and our obsession with self indulgent self promotion via social media has changed how we live day to day. The project involves artists Ciara Scanlan & Matthew Nevin, [ curators of MART www.mart.ie] working alongside Trish McAdam a filmmaker and Artist, Andrew Carson a Visual Artist and Róisín O a singer to utilize their talents from their own disciplines to analyse the process of ‘imitation’. Takahashi Kohei, Takesi Ikeda, Makiko Yamamoto are artists based in Kyoto Japan whose work on show is based on mimicry.

All works on show are video and we will set each piece up so the audience interacts and ‘imitates’.

The exhibition runs from 06-14 November (daily apart from Monday: 13:00-18:00)

“Diary of a Newlywed Poet / Diario de un poeta recién casado” is a performance by the theatre company “Teatro de La Abadía”. It is led by renowned actor and director José Luis Gómez. The performance will take place in the historic Smock Alley Theatre (Boys School) and is included in the Juan Ramón Jiménez events, a series of events to commemorate the centenary of the first publication of his most universal work “Platero y yo”.

The performance is in Spanish with English surtitles.

This is a debate about the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).

One side says TTIP will drive renewal in Europe by supporting renewed growth rates of 1.5% with a boost in economic activity worth EUR 800M. The other side says that TTIP will undermine our democracy while driving environmental and food safety standards downwards and undermine progress for climate justice.

Is it possible that it will do both? This debate will look at all sides.

Comhlamh (pronounced ‘co-law-ve’, Irish for ‘solidarity’) is a member and supporter organisation open to anyone interested in social justice, human rights and global development issues.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

Chris Judge is one of Ireland’s most successful children’s authors and illustrators. His picture books include the award-winning “The Brave Beast” and “The Lonely Beast”. He has also recently illustrated Roddy Doyle’s number one bestseller “Brilliant”. He will be reading and illustrating from his new picture book “TiN”.

As a tribute to the Italian actor and director Nino Manfredi, his films will be shown at 13:15 and 18:30 on Thursdays between 02 Oct and 04 Dec. The next screening is on Thursday: “Il padre di famiglia” by Nanny Loi (1967) . (In Italian with English subtitles.)

A free information evening about bereavement with guest speaker Michael Harding (Irish short-story writer, playwright and novelist) takes place. This Irish Hospice Foundation, who organises this event, provides information about grief and the range of supports available to bereaved people.

“Out of Thin Air” is an Artist Talk by Daragh Muldowney in the Copper House Gallery. He will show his images and talk about his voage aboard the Killary Flyer across the Atlantic to Greenland and the process involved in making “Out of Thin Air”, a photographic documentation of the expedition and showing Arctic ice sculptures.

“Blog” is a film about a group of 15 year old middle.upper class girls who are on the search for strong emotions. The film is by Elene Trapé and will be screened in Spanish with English Subtitles. Admission is free.

“These Are a Few of My Favourite Things” is the title of a Walking Tour that Emily Gallagher will run next Thursday. It will be an Alternative Arts and Culture Trail and she will bring you to “Dublin’s Best Cafes, Bars, Markets, Unusual Stores, Galleries, Theatres, Arts Spaces, and more! And hear some tales you’ve never heard before!”

Alan Titley talks about “Neither Shillelaghs nor Shamrocks: The Other Irish Novel”: The novel in Irish begins in the late 19th century as it did in most European countries. Since then about three hundred have been written and some have gained the status of classics amongst readers in the Irish language. This talk (which is in English!) will look at some of those classics and aims to evaluate them both in their own time and for ours.

Saint Patrick’s Cathedral will host a special recital, focusing on the theme of ‘remembrance’ to highlight their ‘Lives Remembered’ exhibition – which was launched to coincide with the centenary of the outbreak of World War One.

The short programme of choral and organ music by Maurice Duruflé will be performed by the boy choristers and gentlemen of the Cathedral Choir, along with organist David Leigh and reader Charles Mullen.

Admission is free of charge and donations for the Irish Red Cross are welcome at the end.

Ciudad Furor is a Festival focusing on Urban Space. It is co-organised by the Latin America Solidarity Centre (Ireland) and CinemaAttic Productions CIC, and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.

There will be screenings from Latin America and Spain, seminars, workshops and roundtables discussions. The aim is to reflect on the urban fabric of cities in Ireland and Latin America and to explore local grassroots initiatives which reconfigure public spaces for cultural, economic or social use.
