A weekly car boot sale, one of less than a handful that is still reliably taking place, has up to 200 cars/sellers. The stadium is just a few minutes walk from the Red LUAS line stop and numerous bus stops. For traders the Car Boot Sale opens at 06:30 for buyers from 08:00. If you are interested in selling, check the details and register on their website.

The Kill of the Grange Church of Ireland is running a Car Boot Sales in the centre of Deansgrange at the KOTG Church. (The Church and car park are behind Supervalu in Deansgange.)

Irish-American film director John Ford is regarded as one of the most influential and important filmmaker of his generation. He was born in Maine, USA in 1895 and died in 1973 and his career spanned more than 50 years. He created more than 140 films, including numerous classics such as ‘The Searchers’, ‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance’, ‘The Grapes of Wrath’, ‘The Quiet Man’ and ‘How Green Was My Valley’.

The John Ford Ireland Symposium is an event for budding filmmakers, movie lovers and John Ford fans. There will be film screenings, panel discussions, public interviews, music for the screen events and performances, master classes and more. All events are ticketed, but a good few are free, so it is worth going through the list here and the non-free events might interest you too, if you are a film lover, so check it out.

The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The SuperNatural Food Market is taking place every Saturday from 09:30-15:30 in St. Andrews Resource Centre in Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

Opening hours are Thu-Fri 12:00-19:00 and Sat 09:30-16:00.

The Belgard Weekend Market is an indoor market with stalls with handcraft (incl. designer jewellery, aran jumpers and wool, christening robes and shawls, cards and cross stitch), household items, bric and brac, furniture, flowers, make-up, clothes, shoes, showers, upholstery, toys, kitchens, cafe, army memorabilia, collectors items, sweets, handbags books, blinds, party shop, tools and more.

It is open every Saturday and Sunday and is located in the Glen Abbey complex (opposite Jacobs) on Belgard Road.

The Irish International Jugger Tournament will take place at Wanderers Rugby Club on the Sat+Sun. There will be American juggers and teams from Spain, Germany and Sweden will also be represented.

When I heard about this event, I first had to check what “Jugger” is. I never had heard that word before. Jugger is a sport that was inspired by the 1989 movie “The Salute of the Jugger” and if you want to properly understand it, you better read this. Allegedly modern Jugger looks like something between a game of two player rugby mixed with a face off between two fencing or kendo teams. Ohhh!

Well, maybe you should then come to the Wanderers Football Club to see how it is played! Admission for spectators is free.

Jamestown Flea Market + Car Boot Sale takes place every Sat+Sun from 10:00-17:00. You can reach it from Tyrconnell Road and from Kylemore Road and it is within 3 min from Black Horse stop on the red Luas line. There is free parking.

The Merchants Market on East Wall Road is a weekly indoors flea market on Saturdays and Sundays with more than 80 stalls in a big industrial hall. There is everything from furniture and antiques to paintings and mirrors, electronics and hot food to bicycles and buns. It is just a few minutes walk away from the Point Theatre/O2 (walk in the direction of the Port Tunnel).

A new market (flea/vintage/etc) with two cafés has opened in the same location in Thomas Street where the Ferocious Mingle Market was before their move to Camden Street.

The new market in 72 Thomas Street is called Stable Market and it is open from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00-18:00 every day. It seems there is neither a website nor a Facebook Page yet.

The Temple Bar Markets (Food Market on Meeting House Square, Book Market on Temple Bar Square and the Designer Mart near Cow’s Lane) are taking place every Saturday from 10:00-16:30.

At the Blackrock Market in the centre of Blackrock, you’ll find 50 stalls selling collectibles, antiques, handmade goods, books, food & there’s free popcorn, ballons & facepainting for the kids.
Open on Saturdays and Bank Holidays: 11:00-17:30, and Sundays: 12:00-17:30.

This is a fun event for kids exploring the weird and wonderful diversity of insects and ‘minibeasts’ living in and around the pond at the Botanic Gardens. This workshop is suitable from age 8 upwards.

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

The Vikings wore pendants and amulets based on the Norse gods in the hope that they would bring them good luck. Drop-in to learn more about the beliefs of the Vikings and make your very own Thor’s hammer pendant to take home.

The event takes place in the Learning Resource Room, first floor. Admission is free and no booking is required. Suitable fore Ages 6+.

This is the fifth year for “Yoga in the Park”, a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause: From May until September, Tine from www.aditiyoga.org/ and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required.

The class is donation based, but all proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin and the suggested donation for this very good cause is EUR 5.

Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

The Drawing Day Family Tour “Animal Paintings” will take place in the Natural History Museum.

Celebrating The National Gallery of Ireland’s Drawing Day, this tour will take a look at the animals which inspired some of the world’s most famous paintings. Choose your favourite one and complete the My Favourite Animal activity sheet.

There will be two tours, one from 12:00-12:45 and the other 14:00-14:45.

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “FAT – It’s Delicious” and it will run from 16 May – 29 Jun. The exhibition is a “lab in the gallery” event, which means that it is not just an exhibition to watch, but there are some interaction and real research elements to the exhibition.

The exhibition will show you the good and and the bad sides of fat. There will be soap that has been made from human fat (gained during a liposuction), animal fat is being cured in alcohol and a delicious meal will be made from it at one of the events, the benefits of plant oils are mentioned and the risks of obesity are pointed out. In addition you can contribute to research through tests and experiments about BMI, agility, body image and blood quality.

I like lab in the gallery events because it is not “just” an exhibition but you also are invited (you don’t have to!) to contribute to research. Kids will get the exhibition, but need some help from the parents with it. You should definitely bring them! However, kids will not be able to do the research elements and might get bored, so plan your trip well.

As always I strongly recommend to have a look at the exhibition, but you only have until 29 June!

The weekly Ha’penny Flea Market is an indoor market in the Grand Social Pub, which offers vintage Men and Women’s clothing, contemporary crafts, books, DVDs, vinyl records, vintage and handmade jewellery, vintage hair styles, art, photography and much more. Grand Social’s Bar and Gourmet Coffee options are available.

The Irish Record Fairs market selling a huge range of records and CDs of all music styles. Admission is free.

The week long MythFest will come to an end with a Family Day on Saturday.

The event takes place in the Rose Garden of Trinity College. There will be performances of mythical plays interspersed with face painting, sock puppet making and ice cream. Admission is free.

MythFest invites you to connect with Ireland’s history and mythology and to immerse yourself in the creatures, characters and colours of ancient Irish legend. MythFest featured 10 new plays inspired by the stories of ancient Irish mythology and folklore.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). Stuart Clark presents The Sky’s Dark Labyrinth

In conjunction with the exhibition “Isabel Nolan: The weakened eye of day”, astronomer and author Dr Stuart Clark tells the story of how single observations by astronomers have transformed our view of the Universe and our place within it. A closing discussion will be moderated by Lorraine Hanlon (Associate Professor, School of Physics, UCD).

“These Are a Few of My Favourite Things” is the title of a Walking Tour that Emily Gallagher will run every Saturday. It will be an Alternative Arts and Culture Trail and she will bring you to “Dublin’s Best Cafes, Bars, Markets, Unusual Stores, Galleries, Theatres, Arts Spaces, and more! And hear some tales you’ve never heard before!”

The Dublin Circus Project is running two juggling workshops.

“Women Who Rock” will be a weekend (Fri + Sat) full of women who are singers and songwriters working very hard in making a dent in the Irish music industry. Every Sunday, the Merrion Square Open Air Art Gallery takes place. Up to 200 artists exhibit their paintings on the railings on three sides (West, North and East) of Merrion Square and you can just enjoy the exhibition or even buy.

A Sandmartin walk at Shanganagh Cliffs will take place. Walk along Shanganagh beach to visit the Sandmartin colony and to observe other birds. The terrain is quite rough and walking boots are recommended.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

The next Fusion Sundays Market will take place this Sunday in the Dublin Food Co-op. It is a world culture market, an ethnic Bazaar, that focuses on the diverse ethnic culture present in Ireland today.

The Market features a huge array of International stalls, ethnic food, live music and entertainment for kids. You can buy handmade goods, arts and crafts, recycled products, jewellery, clothes and food.

The market is held every second Sunday of the month. Admission is free.

The “Irish Wolfhound Club of Ireland” will have their Championship Show at Farmleigh House. At the event the Irish Kennel Club will also be present and will show native breeds. Unfortunately there are not too many details available about the event, all there is is a poster at the websiste below.

The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

A Camino de Santiago preparation walk will take place and go from Bull Island to Glasnevin Cementary via the Botanical Gardens.

The meeting point for this walk is the Bay Restaurant on Clontarf Road. Participation os free, but you are asked to let the organisers know (via the Facebook Page) if you want to take part as they may need to make a last minute change due to weather.

“Made by Hand” or “Hecho a manos” is a new Sunday weekly market in Viva, Portobello with most things made by hand and some vintage clothing and curiosities too. Admission is free.

An indoor market in Coolock with over 40 traders with a wide range of goods and a café on site as well.

The Spanish Naval Ship “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” is a 112m long four-masted sailing ship and “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” will be in Dublin from Sat 07-Thurs 12 June.

Led by Captain Enrique Torres Piñeyro, the “Elcano” is used as a training ship for the Royal Spanish Navy, preparing its Officers for long periods at sea. When the ship will arrive in Dublin there will be 191 crew on board, who will participate in a five-day programme of engagements in Dublin to promote Spanish-Irish cultural exchange.

Part of this will be a number of Open Days when you can visit the ship for free. Visits are possible on Sun, Mon, Tues and Wed:

Access to the ship in Alexandra Basin is via a free shuttle bus service from Dublin Port Company’s headquarters on Alexandra Road, Dublin 1.

Before arriving in Dublin, the Elcano was sailing for 23 days across the Atlantic from New York and the next stops will be Hamburg and Frederikstad in Norway before the ship will return to Spain. The Elcano was built in Cádiz (Spain) in 1928 and has been on 85 training voyages in its 86 year history.

The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June.

The next concert will feature “Changing Perspectives 6” with Brian MacNamara (Piano) and Keith Pascoe (Violin) continuing their quest of playing all 27 Mozart & Beethoven Sonatas For Piano & Violin.

Buffalo Sunn will perform at an In-Store event in HMV. Admission is free.

An Intercultural Japanese language tour with Community Ambassador Hiromi Anazai will take place.

Meeting point is in the atrium of the Library. Admission is free and no booking is required.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

A weekly Jazz gig will take place in the Sunshine Cafe for your Sunday afternoon entertainment. The Jazzwise Duo (piano and double bass) play classic jazz including Broadway standards, Bossa Nova, Blues etc

Brian Keary is a classically trained guitar player who also has experience of different styles / genres of music ranging from ragtime and folk to baroque and contemporary. He will perform in Sweeney’s (Ground Floor) on Sunday afternoon.

The Dublin Circus Project is running two juggling workshops.

The first one is a “Juggling Techniques Workshop” on Sat 07 June (19:00-21:00): Explore a wide range of juggling techniques with Liam Wilson. Admission is free, but your donation in a hat at the end will be very much appreciated.

The Spanish Naval Ship “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” is a 112m long four-masted sailing ship and “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” will be in Dublin from Sat 07-Thurs 12 June.

Led by Captain Enrique Torres Piñeyro, the “Elcano” is used as a training ship for the Royal Spanish Navy, preparing its Officers for long periods at sea. When the ship will arrive in Dublin there will be 191 crew on board, who will participate in a five-day programme of engagements in Dublin to promote Spanish-Irish cultural exchange.

Part of this will be a number of Open Days when you can visit the ship for free. Visits are possible on Sun, Mon, Tues and Wed:

The Monthly Public Meeting of the Dublin Cycling Campaign will this month discuss “Bicycle Recycling Projects for Young People”.

Mike Cowman of Bradog will talk about the INDY (Inner-City North Dublin Youth) Bikes Programme. The programme’s objective is to engage children and young people (aged 10–21) from a typical tough Inner City community and introduce them to the world of bikes: Maintenance; building new bikes from old frames; learning about fitness, health and environmental benefits of cycling; Developing local leaders and role models.

Roger Warburton will talk about the Rediscover Cycling bicycle reuse project in Ballymun. The aims of Rediscover Cycling are to promote both reuse and cycling as enjoyable eco-friendly activities and provide training and work experience opportunities to priority groups.

A Meditation Retreat on Nibbana Dhamma with Dr. Lalith Ranathunga from Australia will take place on Wed + Thur and is organised by the Irish Sangha Trust.

“Food, Families and Health: Critical Perspectives” is the title of a public lecture and symposium organized by The Children’s Research Centre and the School of Social Work and Social Policy.

The event will feature lectures and discussion on themes of: Food and families; health and weight; obesity discourse; and representations of obesity in public reports and media.

The “Havana International Language Exchange” is taking place every Wed from 16:30-19:30 in Havana Tapas Bar in George’s Street. There are many Spanish speakers and English-speakers are explicitly invited, but everyone else is certainly very welcome too, to meet for a chat to improve your Spanish or English.

“Dutch Atlases – The Google Earth of the 17th Century” is a lecture by Prof. Peter van der Krogt, (University of Amsterdam). The event is organised by The Fagel Map Project, TCD Department of History.

When we want to get an image of the world today, we use Google Earth. In the 17th century, the common source for geographical information was the atlas and Dutch publishers were the leaders in this field. Prof Peter van der Krogt talks about the first real atlas from 1570 and how they developed over time. The lecture will be richly illustrated with maps from these historic atlases.

In the “Soccer Stories” film series at the Instituto Cervantes, the next film will be “Rivales” (2008) by Fernando Colomo. The film will be screened in Spanish with English subtitles. It is suitable for ages 13+.

The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

The list of performers is not yet announced on their Facebook Page and I am not sure if it will be put up there, but check it anyway.

The New Natives gig night is back and will feature this time the headline act Redwoods and support from Censor The Beast and The Bonzai Pipeline.

The final year performances from Newpark Music Centre’s BA Jazz Performance Class will take place from Tues 10 – Wed 18 June. There will be 28 gigs and they will feature a wide variety of music, not just jazz. All gigs are free.

“The Song Room” is another open mic event. It takes place in The Globe in George’s Street at 20:30 every Wednesday.

“The Zodiac Sessions” is a regular open mic event from 20:30 in Bruxelles (between Grafton Street and Westbury Hotel) for unsigned musicians. Admission is free and there is a different line-up every week.

Bad Boy Jake are every Wednesday in the Gypsy Rose Rock & Blues Bar playing their rock, blues and American.

Every Wednesday a Singer Songwriter Night will take place in Mother Reilly’s in Rathmines. This is YOUR chance to show everyone what you can do, alternatively you can just listen to the talented Singer/Songwriters. Admission is free.

Traditional Irish Music Session in Hedigan’s (The Brian Boru) in Phibsborough from 21:30 every Wednesday. If you play an instrument you are especially welcome (all levels are welcome).

A Meditation Retreat on Nibbana Dhamma with Dr. Lalith Ranathunga from Australia will take place on Wed + Thur and is organised by the Irish Sangha Trust.

The core of the Buddhist teaching is centered around liberating the mind from attachment, aversion and ignorance, or in other words around attaining Nibbana.

The Green Door Market is a new indoor food/Farmer’s Market that takes place just a few doors down from the Dublin Food Co-op at Newmarket in Dublin 8. Admission is free.

The Ferocious Mingle Marcade (Market and Arcade) is back in a new location. The Marcade is now in Camden Street next to Daintree Paper and opposite the Centra and off-license there. It takes place every Thurs-Sun and is a flea-market-type permanent market with stalls and “chalets” for traders.

The National Gallery has an extensive programme of free talks, public tours and Art Documentary screenings focusing on highlights of the European and Irish Collection every day of the week. Check their website for details.

“The Augustan Space: A Bimillenium Celebration (Rome AD 14 – Dublin 2014)” is a 3-day conference about aspects of space in the poetry of the Age of Augustus. The event is organised by the international Augustan Poetry Network.

The conference presents more than 20 research papers and it says on the website that everybody is welcome.

The event starts on Friday (14:15-18:30), continues on Saturday (09:30-18:00) and finishes on Saturday at lunch time (09:30-13:00).

The Irish, CONSENSUS research project on sustainable consumption are launching their latest book “Challenging Consumption: Pathways to a more Sustainable Future”. CONSENSUS has been carrying out research on sustainable consumption issues, trends, innovations and policy action since 2009. The CONSENSUS team will be at the event to discuss their work and share sustainably-sourced wine and chats with other interested attendees.

After a successful first year, the Temple Bar Night Market is back this year and thist time there will not just be a few sporadic events, but it will take place every Thursday from 05 June until 28 August.

It is an Arts & Craft Market (and not more – see below!) that will will feature the work of artists & craft makers and street entertainment from music to painting & from dance to workshops.

Last year many people criticised that they missed food stalls at the market and I expect that this won’t change: The market is organised by the Temple Bar Company, an association of the traders in Temple Bar, so it is not in their interest to have competing traders at this market. If you know what to expect, you will hopefully not be disappointed.

The Hot Sprockets will play in HMV Dundrum at an In-Store Event.

“These Are a Few of My Favourite Things” is the title of a Walking Tour that Emily Gallagher will run next Thursday. It will be an Alternative Arts and Culture Trail and she will bring you to “Dublin’s Best Cafes, Bars, Markets, Unusual Stores, Galleries, Theatres, Arts Spaces, and more! And hear some tales you’ve never heard before!”

Today the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil starts with the Opening Ceremony (from 19:00) and the first game Brazil vs Croatia at 21:00. Many pubs and venues will screen the games over the next month.

The Sugar Club is one of them and you can see most of Brazil’s game on the Sugar Club’s big cinema screen. On Thursday first the Opening Ceremony and then the first game will be shown.

The official launch concert of the Coro Cervantes, Instituto Cervantes’ Dublin Choir, takes place on Thursday.

Borja Zanón, the Choir’s Director, will explain the objectives of this initiative and he will give a glimpse of future projects. The event will end with a Spanish wine reception.

A Public Art Demonstration with Thai Artist Oat Montien will take place. Oat Montien is based in London and specialises on book art. Meet the artist and find out more about his drawing techniques and creative approach to illustration and book art.

The choirboys of St. Patrick’s Cathedral Choir School will give a special performance to launch their outreach programme.

The choristers – aged eight to 12 – will perform the ‘Chichester Psalms’ by Leonard Bernstein and five African-American Spirituals from ‘A Child of Our Time’ by Michael Tippett. The concert coincides with the graduation of the current choristers. The choir will be directed by Master of Choristers Stuart Nicholson, and will be joined by organist Tristan Russcher; harpist, Geraldine O’Doherty; and Richard O’Donnell on percussion.

Admission is free and there will be a collection on the evening.
