Hi all!
I got lots of mails from people that wanted to hear more about our great holidays with Northern Light Hunt and Dog Sledding. I have put a few (just 5) pictures on my Facebook Profile. 3 are of the dog and there are two of the best 16 of the Northern Lights and you should be able to see the pictures if you go to www.facebook.com/joerg.steegmueller Unfortunately I didn’t have time during the week to write this travel report so instead I will just send it to all the people that wanted to hear about it. If you also want to be added to the list, drop me a mail (dublineventguide@gmail.com) and I will send it to you later in the week.
[ad]
This weekend is quite busy and with the St Patrick’s Festival, next week will be even busier. Let’s hope that the weather will play ball and all will be great. In Germany, where around this time of the year there could easily still be snow, it will be +20 degrees this weekend. Mad weather! But when it comes to an outdoors festival next weekend, I will take 20 degrees any day.
Ohh, and if you talk to any American friends this week, make sure that they know that it is Paddy’s Day and NOT Patty’s Day! :-) I don’t know where they got “Patty” from!? Maybe from the same place where they got Aluminum instead of Aluminium? :-P
Have a great week!
Here are the weekly pleas for your help and then let’s get started with the events:
The bill for sending the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) week after week through a professional E-mail sending company is a relatively low EUR 170 every month, but because I am not earning a cent from this work, I need your help with that. If you can help with a donation or maybe through your company with sponsorship, I appreciate it hugely. ANY amount is appreciated, but I suggest a donation of between EUR 12 and EUR 20. At EUR 12, that’s just EUR 1 per month! If you don’t have EUR 1 per month, then this weekly e-mail magazine is my gift for you. I can imagine how tough it is being in financial difficulties and I hope your situation will improve soon. If you do have EUR 1 per month to help keeping the Dublin Event Guide going, please do so at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Thanks!
And finally: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 19,800 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 43,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Have you ever felt too old for something? Or maybe you have even said it? I love playing on a playground. Swings, climbing trees, zip-lines, bouncy castles. Soo much fun! :-) I know, some of you will shake their head and think that I am too old for that. But isn’t that a limiting belief? Where else do you limit yourself like that? What could you achieve if you did not have these limits in your head?
Johanna Quaas doesn’t have these limits! She is 86 years of age (born in 1925) and started doing gymnastics competitively 30 years ago. She always enjoyed sports when she was a child, then was a sports/PE teacher, but only started in her 50s to take part in competitions. Have a look: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NZ6C6wGpAE
And if you think she must be the only one being so fit at that age, have a look at this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bho1JMfG8k
Get rid of your limiting believes and you will achieve outstanding things!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week the wonderful people that helped with a donation were Linda T, Mark G, Cathal F, Brendan M and Mary F. Thanks a lot for your help! Every bit counts and YOUR help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you – and everyone else – will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week.
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
This week my pick list is a little longer than in other weeks, there are lots of interesting events.
Let me start with Saturday. Here I recommend the Re-enactment of the Napoleonic Wars in Collins Barracks, the Trade School and also the Women Inspiring Change Workshops if you want to learn something and enhance skills. The market and also party element of the day is at the D-Light Studio Market Party and some more learning in the evening with the Sidewalk Astronomers. Busy day, but it all can be done! ;-)
On Sunday I might go to the monthly Fusion Sunday World Culture Market, if I were female, I would probably go to the Women Inspiring Change – Workshop and gender-independent, there is the Muro Mini Fest. If you have kids and want to teach them a bit more about nature and wetlands and sea, checkout the event that takes place on Bull Island.
During the week there is an interesting talk about the Bridges of Dublin on Wednesday, then there is the Science Gallery Mediator Talk on Thursday and on Friday St Patrick’s Festival will start with the Festival Ceili, with a Milk and Cookies Stories Storytelling event and with the Craft Beer and Food Market in the CHQ Building.
Busy week and it will get busier next weekend with the St. Patrick’s Festival!

HMV moving back into Grafton Street
In an announcement that surprised some, HMV has announced that they will open a shop in Grafton Street again.
It won’t be their old shop, which has been taken over by Massimo Dutti. Instead it will be in the shop were A-Ware previously was. A-Ware was next to BT2 at the corner with the tiny street (Lemon Street) that brings you to the Royal Hibernian Way. A-Ware had to close before Christmas after going into receivership.
It is expected that the new store will open within 3 months.

Shocking revelation: Dublin City is paying clampers commission
For years Dublin City assured us that the purpose of clamping cars is to increase the availability of car park spaces not to make money and we were told that clampers were NOT incentivised to clamp cars.
When you read this article here www.irishtimes.com/news/consumer/dublin-city-council-sets-60-000-target-for-clampers-1.1715481 you will realise that with all the incentives the clampers are getting and with the targets set, they will now start behaving differently. They will be on the hunt for cars to clamp. Gone is the few minutes grace period they might give you. With a “clamp lots and go home early AND get a bonus” you can imagine how things will change.
And before you complain about the councillors agreeing to that, I Have to tell you that they weren’t even told. Dublin City Management decided that and didn’t tell or ask the elected councillors. I can’t wait until we have an elected Mayor in Dublin and get rid of the current City Management.

Donating to the Dublin Event Guide for free!?
Do you happily receive the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week? And do you make use of it at least sometimes? And would you like to help to keep it going? If you read this, then the answer is probably three times YES!
But I understand that giving a donation is not everybody’s thing. I can assure you that it will only be used to cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, but wouldn’t it be even neater if you could give money without having to use your own?
This is indeed possible! When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
www.bookdepository.co.uk?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and
www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon
You can also copy these links and send them to your friends. When you click on the link you books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via my links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8%. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it still would amount to a fair amount.
And if you want to buy from
Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for
LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Trade School

Dominick Street Community Centre, Dublin 2
The next Tradde School takes place today. Seven subjects will be taught and some are already booked out. But you can still grab a place, just check the website below.
A Trade School is an adult workshop where people barter for knowledge (practical skills, talents, hobbies and experience). Anyone can teach, anyone can learn and teaching experience is not required. Everyone is welcome to attend classes and importantly no money exchanges hands. Instead the teachers specify what type of goods/items they would like to get in return for them teaching you.
So drop in in the morning and take part in a class. I like the idea of the Trade School and would like to take part (as teacher OR as student, depending on the subject).

Fail Better – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 08 Mar
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.
20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.
I visited the exhibition and I definitely recommend it. Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children. There is no overly complicated stuff, but most of the exhibits are not self-explanatory. But there is a strong reason for bringing your kids: We have in general a negative attitude to Failure. This exhibition will help you to change that!
Admission is free and opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

Fail Better – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sun 09 Mar

What Makes A Change Lab Successful?
18:00 – 19:15, Fri 14 Mar
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
What Makes A Change Lab Successful? A talk by John Thackara, hosted by TCD Computer Science
To effect system-level change in health, energy, food, or mobility, a first step is often to reframe the question. In health, for example, ninety-five percent of person-to-person care happens outside the bio-medical system – and how do you innovate there? In cities, too: smart systems are useful – but what makes cities truly smart are its citizens as they innovate new sharing platforms. Or think about mobility: the big changes under way concerns new social practices, not vehicles – and how do you innovate those?
Admission is free, but booking is required via the website below.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Reverse Marketing Logic!? Lidl and Pancake Tuesday.
On Tuesday was Pancake Tuesday. That odd day when people rush to the super market to buy Pancake Mix or flour, eggs, milk etc. and then you need Golden Syrup, Maple Syrup, Nutella, fresh cream etc etc. Sure, you might not have eaten a pancake the whole year (maybe you don’t even particularly like them) but on Pancake Tuesday, there is NO other option than to have lots of pancakes. It is a national compulsion and is VERY odd behaviour … but that is not the “This is Odd!” story this week.
The “This is Odd!” Story this week deals with Lidl and the Pancake Tuesday. You know in the run up to Christmas, we all expect that the popular items/presents will go up in price and will then be cheaper once Christmas is over. And when there is a big event in town (maybe a Rugby game), then you would expect that the Hotel Rooms are more expensive on the key dates and will be cheaper before and after the event.
I buy nearly all my food in Lidl and on Pancake Tuesday I needed to get something. Walking through the shop I saw that many ingredients for Pancake making where strategically arranged in the shop so that everybody would easily find them. But to my surprise, the prices had not been increased, instead for most items the prices were significantly lower than on other days. THIS is odd! …but it is a great idea! Next year people might remember that Lidl REDUCES prices on the key day.
Two Examples: Nutella was 1.99 on Tuesday instead of 2.69 and the Ready-made Pancake Mix was 0.69 instead of 0.99 on other days.

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
