The weekly Honest2goodness food market in Glasnevin has fresh meat, vegetables, fish, baked goods, and wines. It is open from 09:30-16:00. It is behind Lidl in the Industrial Estate just after the Glasnevin Cemetary coming from the City Centre.

Parkrun Ireland is organising free weekly runs in parks. It is a timed run over 5km and participation is completely free, but registration before your first parkrun is required.

The newest Science Gallery exhibition has the theme “Fail Better” and it will run from 07 Feb – 27 Apr. The title comes from Samuel Beckett’s “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” and the exhibition looks at beautiful and instructive failures. The purpose is to open up a debate on the essential role of failure in human creativity, in technology, science, design, business and sport.

20 unique exhibits, from a pair of explorer boots that caused Ranulph Fiennes to fail in an Everest attempt, via Christopher Reeve’s (Superman) original wheelchair, to a full-scale reconstruction of the the world’s worst or maddest invention: a big table that is meant to assist childbirth using centrifugal force.

I was at the opening of the exhibition and it is definitely a good one. I definitely recommend the exhibition! Age-wise, I would think that it is suitable for children from Age 12/13 as long as the parents are prepared to read a good bit of explanatory text and then “translate” it for their children.

Admission is free and opening hours are Tues-Fri 12:00-20:00 and Sat+Sun 12:00-18:00.

The series of events exploring how the Golden Rule (“Do to others as you would have them do to you”) is understood and applied across different faith traditions continues on Sunday. The speaker will be Dr Yazid Said, lecturer in Islamic Studies in the Mater Dei Institute of Education, DCU. He will talk about how the Golden Rule is understood and applied in Islam.

The address is in the context of the Sunday morning Choral Eucharist (Church of Ireland) which begins at 10:45. All are welcome. Full details of the Golden Rule Project can be found on the Chaplaincy website.

A weekly market with lots of food, but also many other products (art & crafts, books, etc) takes place every Sunday in the beautiful People’s Park in Dun Laoghaire. It is a very popular market and with around 50 vendors also one of the bigger markets.

The next Fusion Sundays Market will take place this Sunday in the Dublin Food Co-op. It is a world culture market, an ethnic Bazaar, that focuses on the diverse ethnic culture present in Ireland today. The Market features a huge array of International stalls, ethnic food, live music and entertainment for kids. You can buy handmade goods, arts and crafts, recycled products, jewellery, clothes and food. The market is held every second Sunday of the month. The well known Palestrina Choir sing every Sunday at the mass in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. They sing complete masterworks by Mozart, Haydn, Dvorak, Palestrina, de Victoria, usually accompanied by Prof. Gerard Gillen on the organ, who often also plays a solo piece.

This is a regular, monthly, family-friendly social event where you can meet up for a meal or snack and a chat with like-minded people (Atheists, Agnostics, Skeptics, Free-Thinkers or those who just have questions about their religious beliefs…). You don’t have to be a member of Atheist Ireland to attend, just come along if you would like to find out more or to just have an informal and fun lunch. The Sundays at Noon Concert Series continues in the Sculpture Gallery at the Hugh Lane Gallery. This series of free (mainly classical) concerts continues to present the best of Irish and International music and musicians. Concerts run from September to June. The next concert will feature Shantala Subramanyam. Improvised Music Company presents Shantala Subramanyam – venu, Akkarai Sornalatha – violin and Jayachandra Rao – mridangam.

The mighty subcontinent of India is home to two great classical traditions, the Hindustani music of the north and the Carnatic style of the south. Shantala Subramanyam is from Bangalore, heartland of carnatic music, renowned for its emphasis on improvisation on beautiful ragas within a highly evolved rhythmic vocabulary. She plays the venu, a carnatic bamboo flute, and it’s an instrument with a warm sonority not unlike our own traditional wood flute.

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.

There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Unlike the three branches of the National Museum, the National Print Museum is normally not free, but every Sunday there is a free public tour for the next few weeks. Every visit begins with a short audio-visual presentation where the audience can observe active retired printers providing practical demonstrations of machines from the Museum’s collection.

The Irish Aikido Federation are running free Aikido Taster Classesfor the whole month of February every Mon, Tues and Wed at 19:00. Prospective members are invited to attend at these classes to get a ‘sense’ of Aikido training.

After years in the Resistance, Samuel Beckett joined the Irish Red Cross Hospital staff in Normandy, where healing the bombed-out people of Saint-Lô had a profound impact on his later works. UCD’s Dr Phyllis Gaffney relates the paradoxes and historicity of these events, placing them firmly in their post-war context.

Leadarise are an organisation that helps young women take ownership of their careers. Originating in Brussels, they run free networking events for women between 25 and 35 (although all ages are welcome) in Brussels, London, New York and Dublin.

The Irish Aikido Federation are running free Aikido Taster Classesfor the whole month of February every Mon, Tues and Wed at 19:00. Prospective members are invited to attend at these classes to get a ‘sense’ of Aikido training.

You can take as many of these taster classes in February as you wish, but it does make sense to pre-arrange them with John at 087 262 9610 and if you decide to register for full classes before 28 May you can do that for the reduced taster offer price (2 months: EUR 200, 6 months: EUR 350).

Aikido is a natural movement martial art to co-ordinate mind and body for health, defense and self-development. Aikido is primarily concerned with the education and development of character, the co-ordination of mind and body, and fostering a positive attitude and spirit of peace through training in physical and mental self-discipline.

Every Tuesday an informal sing along with Ukulele and Toy Musical Instruments takes place in the Stag’s Head. Just bring your instrument and come along. Beginners are welcome. The Bluegrass Collective will perform in Sin É on Tuesday and there might even be an open Bluegrass Jam! Admission is free.

Instruments are supplied (drums (no cymbals), double bass, guitar amp, bass amp, PA system) and ideas and themes will be proposed prior to the session to the musicians who join the event on Facebook (see Facebook Page below).

The Phoenix Big Band is a 16 piece band playing songs of the 1930s, 1940s and other big band arrangements and they are playing every Tuesday in the Tara Tower Hotel (since 2012!) for adult dancing. If you like to waltz, cha cha or foxtrot, come and enjoy their performance.

The Little Museum of Dublin secured sponsorship from Johnston, Mooney & O’Brien until October 2014 and will therefore be able to continue the Big J Wednesday: Every Wednesday from 12:00-17:00 admission into the museum is free thanks to the bread company. There are free guided tours every hour.

Archive at Lunchtime screenings take place Saturdays (Double Bill), Mondays and Wednesdays. The programme is changing weekly now (instead of monthly as in the past). The contemporary Spanish film “Una pistola en cada mano / A Gun in Each Hand” will be screened in the Instituto Cervantes in Spanish with English subtitles. Admission is free.

TCD’s Music Composition Centre is inviting to “Kate Ellis recital on cello” as part of the Association of Irish Composers “Irish Canon”, which sees performers performing Irish new music in venues across the country, creating a new canon of Irish works. The King Kong Club is a weekly music game-show in the Mercantile. Each week 6-7 bands/solo artists play three songs each. At the end of all the performances a clap-off with the King Kong Club Clap-o-Meter takes place and the winner goes through to a semi-final and it all culminates after six months of competition with The Grand Final, held in front of a panel of celebrity judges.

“The Song Room” is another open mic event. It takes place in The Globe in George’s Street at 20:30 every Wednesday.

“The Zodiac Sessions” is a regular open mic event from 20:30 in Bruxelles (between Grafton Street and Westbury Hotel) for unsigned musicians. Admission is free and there is a different line-up every week.

The new market in 72 Thomas Street is called Stable Market and it is open from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00-18:00 every day. It seems there is neither a website nor a Facebook Page and I haven’t been there myself.

Michael Phillips (Dublin City Engineer and President of Engineers Ireland) will talk about “Bridges over the Liffey”. He will focus on the history of Dublin’s bridges. Admission is free, but booking is required. This event is part of the Engineering Week 2014.

What could be done in Dublin with the over 600 prime sites and a wealth of historic buildings that are currently vacant or disused? “City Limits – Inventive Uses for Urban Spaces” will discuss this topic.

Initiatives to be discussed will include the proposed vacant sites levy, DCC Arts Office creative spaces programme, Allotment Homes, Dublin House, Granby Park, the Rediscovery Centre, Chamber Weaver Park and Makers & Brothers pop up shops.

“These neglected places undermine Dublin’s competitiveness and quality of life; becoming hotbeds of anti-social behaviour, detracting from the city’s aesthetic, and artificially inflating the cost of housing. With public and political pressure to use mounting, a government taskforce has been charged with examining the introduction of a levy on vacant lands, intended to prompt action from site owners. As these spaces come in to circulation once more, the challenge becomes how to match the best ideas in urban development with the most suitable spaces.”

“RDS Economic Recovery Lecture Series: Family Owned Manufacturing Firms – The German Experience” is the full title of the talk in the RDS Foundation Programme with Jonathan Hackett, Chief Executive Officer, Botany Weaving Mill Limited and Mr Marc Coleman, Economist, Broadcaster and Author.

Germany is the most successful industrial economy in the European Union and proportionately has almost twice as many people as Ireland working in industry. Much of this success is based on the contribution of small and middle sized family owned manufacturing Mittelstand companies.

“The Role of Conscription and the International Brigades during the Civil War” is a 2-day seminar (13+20 Feb) about the social and cultural history of conscription during the Spanish Civil War and portrayals of the International Brigades and the Spanish Civil War.

On the first day Dr. James Matthews will focus on the experience and mobilization of conscript soldiers on both the Republican and Nationalist sides.

On the second day (20 Feb – 18:30), he will explore the historiographical controversy surrounding the volunteer combatants that fought for the Republic in the International Brigades: Were these men independent volunteers against Fascism or a Comintern-organized army under the orders of the Soviet Union?

As part of the Jameson Dublin International Film Festival a demonstration of special effects will take place on Smithfield Plaza in partnership with Film FX Ireland, Ashford, and the Stunt Actors Guild.

From something as simple as smoke or rain to fire and explosions, special effects play a major role in film making and at this demonstration you can see the effects and afterwards the F/X and stunt teams will answer questions from the audience about how they co-ordinate and organise realistic action sequences in a safe and secure environment.

This sounds like a really interesting event and because it is free and no tickets are required.
