Hi all!
Some day-job problems and some other issues caused a big delay yesterday. I had planned to send this edition of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) many hours earlier, but as long as I have to divide my time between a paying day job and the (not-paying) Dublin Event Guide, I hope you are tolerant with my sending times.
[ad]
Facebook changed their algorithm again this week and it will lead to less of you getting to see the Facebook page updates as a regular feature in your Timeline. If you like the daily mini-reminders, just go to the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide from a Desktop/Laptop (not smartphone!) browser. Then click on the LIKED button just below the Cover Photo and select “Get Notifications”. If you do that, you will see the daily event updates on Facebook. It is a little annoying that Facebook constantly changes things, but they are a commercial company and will always try to increase their revenue.
I have another busy Dublin Event Guide for you this week. Well, Dublin is busy and the number of evens included here only reflect that. The big change is that the evens start “kicking in” again after the long Christmas/New Year break. This weekend we have the Temple Bar TrafFest and next weekend the Chinese New Year Festival. Outdoor events in January/February. Luckily Dublin is never REALLY cold. ;-)
And here are the weekly pleas for your help:
I don’t get any money for compiling the week after week and
The bill for sending the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) week after week through a professional E-mail sending company is a relatively low EUR 170 every month, but because I am not earning a cent from this work, I need your help with that. If you can help with a donation or maybe through your company with sponsorship, I appreciate it hugely. ANY amount is appreciated, but I suggest a donation of between EUR 12 and EUR 20. At EUR 12, that’s just EUR 1 per month! If you don’t have EUR 1 per month, then this weekly e-mail magazine is my gift for you. I can imagine how tough it is being in financial difficulties and I hope your situation will improve soon. If you do have EUR 1 per month to help keeping the Dublin Event Guide going, please do so at www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Thanks!
And finally: Please help spreading the word about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Your friends can easily subscribe at www.dublineventguide.com and they will get a weekly e-mail magazine with all the free events in Dublin if they subscribe. They don’t have to pay a cent for that and their e-mail address is completely safe with me! More than 19,000 people receive the Dublin Event Guide every week and we are more than 40,000 people at the Dublin Event Guide Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide Check it out and click on LIKE when you are there.
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have an event-full weekend and week,
–Joerg

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week’s message here is one to think about for a few minutes:
I AM. …Two of the most powerful words! Because what you put after them shapes your reality!
What words do you put after “I am……!” to complete this sentence? If what you put behind it shapes your reality. What is it you are telling yourself and should you maybe reconsider?

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week the wonderful people that supported this publication with a donation were Sebastian B and Justin McC. Thanks a lot for your help! Every bit counts and YOUR help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you – and everyone else – will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week.
The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and a donation from you of just EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
The big event this week is the first outdoor festival of the year: The Temple Bar TradFest has an indoor component as you can imagine, but this weekend there is a strong focus on outdoor activites as well. From outdoor stages to Ceili workshops, street performance, and a Craft Market, Temple Bar will be buzzing on Saturday and Sunday. If you have children check out The Ark as well.
For the beer drinker among you, have a look at the Beerhouse Beerfest, there are some interesting features. The programme is not very detailed, but the discerning beer drinker will find something, I’d say.
At the end of the week, the Chinese New Year Festival will start and there are already some events on Friday that might interest you. Have a look.
Also consider the many many gigs that we always have in Dublin. There is a hugely vibrant music scene and you find all types of music performed for free every week.

Promote your product or (non-free) event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 19,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? In most cases not a cent! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

Giving money for free!?
Do you happily receive the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week? And do you make use of it at least sometimes? And would you like to help to keep it going? If you read this, then the answer is probably three times YES!
But I understand that giving a donation is not everybody’s thing. I can assure you that it will only be used to cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, but wouldn’t it be even neater if you could give money without having to use your own?
This is indeed possible! When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
www.bookdepository.co.uk?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and
www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon
You can also copy these links and send them to your friends. When you click on the link you books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via my links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8%. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it still would amount to a fair amount.
And if you want to buy from
Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for
LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

This section is intended to feature new startup companies and projects. Opportunities that people saw and that they chose not to ignore. I am, however, experiencing a little technical problem with this section, so for now I won’t be able to use it. I will keep you posted.
|
Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is www.visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Axis, Main Street, Ballymun, Dublin 9
RADE (Recovery through Art, Drama, and Education) worked with several participants on the production of an art exhibit based on the 1913 Lockout. Over eight months, the artists immersed themselves in the stories and history of the Lockout. The participants, many of whom are not originally artists, created art for this historical event. From paintings to wood and plaster sculptures, a work of emotional response to the trials faced by working class people during the 1913 Lockout emerged.

The Secret of Kells Exhibition
10:30 – 17:00, Sat 25 Jan
The Ark, 11a Eustace Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
The Ark in Temple Bar always runs interesting events for children. But because they are usually not free, I don’t get a chance to mention them much here. However, for two previous Saturdays and this week on Sat+Sun they will show the “Secrets of Kells Exhibition” and admission is free. The exhibition is suitable for ages 4+. It contains limited edition art prints of scenes from The Secret of Kells, the animated feature film by Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon.
This weekend, Pipe makers and players from Na Píobairí Uilleann will be in the exhibition space between 12:30 and 14:30 on Sat+Sun. Come and see how these intriguing native Irish instruments are made – starting from the surprising beginnings of just a few small pieces of wood.
Over the coming weeks there are more interesting (but not free) events. If you have children, check them out. You might find something really interesting.

The Secret of Kells Exhibition
10:30 – 17:00, Sun 26 Jan

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 26 Jan
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of (hobby) artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle, Science Gallery, …), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches.
There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website below or on their Facebook Page where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

The launch of the 5th issue of the Irish Art & Literature Magazine “The Runt” will take place in the Bellobar, the basement venue at the Lower Deck Pub.
A Look Inside the Marital Bedroom of Love and Literature: New Irish Writers and Artists Peek Beneath the Covers in Magazine Launch
Dante and Beatrix, Elizabeth and Mr Darcy, F. Scott and Zelda; on and off the page, love and literature have been regular bedfellows for centuries now. But it’s when we take a peek at what goes on beneath the covers that things get more complicated. The 5th issue of the The Runt is entitled ‘Flesh of the Runt’ and contains an original and irreverent examination of love, both romantic and physical.
At the launch there will be the darkly humorous poems of National Olympic Weightlifting champion Colm Whelan and a performance from guest storyteller Richard Howard (Weird Tales). ‘Ride Irish,’ a satirical sketch about the ‘world’s oldest profession’, performed by Colm Kearns (wordlegs) and the renowned short story writer Boris Belony (Transmorphosis and Other Short Story), will be other features.
For more information check the Facebook Page below. Admission to the launch event will be free.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Rich Tea Biscuit
Who came up with this? If there was a price for the worst biscuit in the world, I think Rich Tea biscuits should get it and it puzzles me why they are so popular in the UK and in Ireland.
When I was doing my military service in Germany, we occasionally got survival food rations and they contained a pack of biscuits that had a similar non-taste as Rich Tea Biscuits and it also was that hard. The army nickname for these survival pack biscuits (Their expiration date was 10 years or more away!) was “armoured plates” or “tank plates”, because they were as hard and as tasteless as you could only imagine steel/armoured plates to be. Surprisingly I found a picture of them here.
Rich Tea Biscuits are as bad! And who came up with that misleading name? There is nothing “rich” about them!
Mind you, I love biscuits. But do biscuits without chocolate even deserve the name “biscuits”? Not in my world. :-)

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
