Hi all!
I thank you! Each and every one of you!!! Why? Not just for being around and for supporting the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), but today I want to thank you for your flexibility and tolerance. I worked really hard since Wednesday evening. Worked through 1.5 nights and had the Dublin Event Guide nearly finished by 11:00 today. BUT it was only NEARLY finished and despite all my efforts I couldn’t complete it until hours later.
[ad]
I had to leave my desk at 11:00 because I had to help teaching a group of international soldiers who will go unarmed into dodgy locations abroad, how to deal with threats. It was only a very brief display of a selected few things that we teach a lot more comprehensively to about 1000 “normal” (i.e civilian) people every year at our self-defence classes at Krav Maga Ireland (www.kravmagaireland.com) but the interesting thing was that the soldiers with all their other training had never done anything like that before. They had lots of fun and learned a lot, but it meant that I was a few hours away from the Dublin Event Guide and only now – much later than planned – I can finish it. Apologies for the delay, but most importantly a HUGE Thanks! For your tolerance and flexibility. I appreciate it!
Here it is again, another Dublin Event Guide full of free events. The focus of this weekly publication on “free” is not because we are all cheapos and are stingy. Not at all, I am sure that you all spend plenty of money on lots of different things every week. Not everything is totally deliberate (I just had to renew my health insurance and it is painful to see a big junk of money go and I also had to pay car insurance.) but we also spend money on other events or good food etc if we have the money. Right? So money gets spent anyway, but there are great organisations that work hard to make certain events available for free so that even more people can enjoy them and this Dublin Event Guide is a match maker! Bring people that appreciate cultural events together with people that run these events. The added bonus is that the events are free, and the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is just the best publication that focuses on all these great free events. Do you agree?
Your help and support is always appreciated to keep this initiative going. Be it with donations, or by buying your books and Amazon purchases by clicking on links in this mail first. Or by spreading the word or by telling me about events that you are involved with or that you heard about.
Currently I am looking for help from a few Facebook employees. If anybody out there works for Facebook and is happy to help, please contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com! Thanks!
And now to the regular reminders! Thanks for reading:
Remember everytime you discover something new through the Dublin Event Guide, tell your friends, colleagues and families about it. Tell them about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and keep spreading the word about this weekly publication! Tell the people you meet about it and suggest to them to subscribe too. They can do that easily on the right hand side at www.dublineventguide.com and they can also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide
Sending the Dublin Event Guide bills costs EUR 170 every month and I need to find that every single month. A contribution of EUR 1 per month from you would be great if you enjoy the Dublin Event Guide. You can either choose to subscribe (EUR 12 per year) or you can contribute with a once-off sum here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Every cent will be used for the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have a great weekend + week!

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
Gratitude (or Gratefulness) is something that I mention regularly here in the “Feel Good Slot”. Why? Well, if we become aware how great nature, life and living is, then we realise that a lot of the challenges and problems we currently experience are maybe not as bad as it feels right now. And if we realise that there are actually ALWAYS some good things around us, then we will become better capable of dealing with the upsets life serves us.
Today’s Feel Good Slot video clip is one to enjoy. It is a very poignant reminder of the greatness around us. Give yourself 10 minutes to watch that video. You will not regret it! www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXDMoiEkyuQ
(Thanks Paola for sending this to me!)

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week James E, Sarah H, Karl C, Melanie B and Donna M were the wonderful people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot, every cent counts! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small contribution and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
The Science Week 2013 and the Dublin Book Festival take place this weekend. In addition there is Astronomy Ireland’s Astro Expo in TCD. On Sunday the Printfest takes place in the National Print Museum, a small but interesting museum in the Ballsbridge direction. If you have never been there, go when the retired printers show their trade. It is so much more interesting thatn just seeing inactive machines. Also on Sunday the next Christmas Light ceremony takes place. It is Henry Street’s turn this weekend.
During the week there are a good few interesting talks and even if that is not your thing normally, try it out sometimes (It is free! ;-) ) because often you can find something that was surprisingly much more interesting than expected. Push yourself out of your comfrot zone every now and then!

Secret Castle of Magic – Ticket Competition
Fridays 19:30
Secret Castle of Magic, adjacent to Westwood Gym, Clontarf Road, Clontarf, Dublin 3
Dublin’s most magical and spooky show experience the “Secret Castle of Magic” runs every Friday at 19:30 in the Bram Stoker’s Castle Dracula in Clontarf. It is not suitable for adults of nervous disposition or anyone under 14 years, but everyone else will have a great night. It is a 2-hour show filled with amazing magic and chilling spookiness.
The show comes in two parts. There is the incredible Vampire Show and a Hilarious Comedy Magic show. In addition you will be brought on a tour of Bram Stoker’s ‘Castle Dracula’ with the Characters from Dracula ‘Renfield’ and ‘Van Helsing’. You will wander through the Castle’s Tunnels, Bridges, Gargoyle Courtyards, Haunted Library and off course the Amazing Graveyard Theatre.
Tickets are EUR 25 for the 2-hour experience (both Shows and the Spooky Castle Tour with Renfield and Van Helsing) and you can book your tickets (or find out more) by calling 01 8512151. More show details are also on the website www.secretcastleofmagic.com/ or on the Facebook Page www.facebook.com/SecretCastleOfMagic
Meeting point is at 19:30 (sharp!) at the Westwood Gym Reception in Clontarf on Clontarf Road, at the edge of Fairview Park and next to the Clontarf Dart Station.
I had the pleasure to experience the show a few years ago and it was brilliant then, but I am told it got even better since! The castle got renovated recently and the show has only started again a few weeks ago. To celebrate that and to let you all know about this great attraction, the organisers have made 3 pairs of tickets available for a competition. The competition question was “What was the name of Dracula’s manservant who ate bugs?”. And the answer was Renfield. The lucky winners were Eileen Dennan, Maria Kavanagh and Keytelynne Radde. Congratulations!

Promote your product or (non-free) event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 18,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? In most cases not a cent! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

Giving money for free!?
Do you happily receive the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week? And do you make use of it at least sometimes? And would you like to help to keep it going? If you read this, then the answer is probably three times YES!
But I understand that giving a donation is not everybody’s thing. I can assure you that it will only be used to cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, but wouldn’t it be even neater if you could give money without having to use your own?
This is indeed possible! When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
www.bookdepository.co.uk?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and
www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon
You can also copy these links and send them to your friends. When you click on the link you books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via my links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8%. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it still would amount to a fair amount.
And if you want to buy from
Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for
LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

Clery’s to re-open
Clery’s department store in O’Connell Street experienced some internal damage in July after a bad thunderstorm damaged the roof and flooding resulted. All 86 employees were let go at the time and the refurbishment took unexpectedly long. But now, many months later, Clery’s will re-open on Thurs 21 November just in time for the Christmas business – and the 86 employees will be re-employed. I can’t wait to see what amazing things they did to the shop in these 4 months. I guess we should expect to be blown away!? www.rte.ie/news/business/2013/1108/485468-clerys-oconnell-street-to-reopen-this-month/

Broken Song – Hip Hop in (North) Dublin
GI, Costello and Willa Lee are street poets, hip-hop artists, rappers and song-writers from North Dublin. Ballymun and Finglas have created their own thriving hip hop scene, where the artists deal with the frustration about their lives by expressing it words. They inspire many others and show that a substance abuse and crime is not the only option available.
Director Claire Pix made a documentary, called “Broken Song”, about the artists and their environment and the film will launch tonight (Friday 15 Nov) in the IFI. Check more details here www.facebook.com/events/257768944370338/

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Now’s the Time – Brian Gormley
21 Nov-03 Dec
Copper House Gallery, Synge Street, Dublin 8
The Copper House Gallery will launch Now’s the Time, an exhibition of prints based on mixed media work by artist Brian Gormley at 18:00 on Thurs 21 Nov. Artist and lecturer Andrew Folan will open the exhibition. (Admission is free.)
Brian Gormley’s work captures explosions of random sound and energy, with pure gouache (a type of paint consisting of pigment, a binding agent (usually gum arabic), and sometimes added inert material) in place of notes, a process reminiscent of Robert Rauschenberg and Jackson Pollock. Using acrylic and silkscreen techniques on linen and canvas, his work pays hommage to abstract expressionism, inspired by the discordant beauty of Charlie Parker’s jazz composition “Now’s the Time.”

Science Week 2013
09:00, Fri 15 Nov
Dublin (various locations)
Science Week 2013 takes place from 10-17 Nov nationwide. The theme this year is “Explore the XTRA-Ordinary!” and it will give you an opportunity to go “behind the scenes” of everyday life and processes that are taking place in front of our own eyes.
Co-ordinated by Science Foundation Ireland’s (SFI) Discover Programme, Science Week is a collaboration of events run by colleges, schools, libraries, teachers, researchers and students throughout Ireland. With over 650 free events everyone can and should get involved and learn about the XTRA-Ordinary things in your life.
Filtering for free events in Dublin for adults, I found 56 events here. And if you want to define your own filter, just go to www.scienceweek.ie/events/find-events.html
I will include some of the free events in this Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and in next week’s edition, but it will only be a selection of events, not a comprehensive list. So, make sure that you check out the website.

Le Cool Compound – Science Week
11:00 – 18:00, Fri 15 Nov
Gallery of Photography, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Sometimes event notices are so unclear and difficult to understand that I wonder if it is worth including them, but I will make an attempt:
The Le Cool Compound describes their Science Week event like this:
“Play the Game of Life within a light installation, ‘Anthropocene’, created by Lightscape and Tom O’Dea, and tinker with sound, electronics and stationary with a mad-cap installation by Designgoat. The Urban Farm will also be displaying their Aquaponic system to pique your curiousity.
There will be three immersive tours of the experience.
6:30pm-7pm, 7:15pm-7:45pm and 8pm-8:30pm
We have also added a family edition on Saturday 16th at 3pm, cos we want to see kids have their tiny minds blown.
The exhibition will also be open to the general public until Saturday, with Nutty Professors on site to coach you in the exhibition’s scientific madness.
Apply to dubcomps@lecool.com with ‘Le Cool Compound’ in the subject line, and mentioning your preferred tour time.”
And here are the things that are not clear:
1) The three 30min long immersive tours were on Thursday evening only. The Science Week websites says that the event (or the exhibition) starts at 11:00 on Friday and Saturday and runs until 18:00. The Facebook Page doesn’t specify the start time.
2) The family edition on Sat assumingly requires booking as well, right?
3) Is booking required to see the exhibition? The Science Week website says that booking IS required. The Facebook Page doesn’t make that clear. And if booking is required, then how can I mention my preferred tour time if there are no tours on Fri and Sat?
4) What is the exhibition about if the full “experience” will only be available during one of the “immersive tours”?

Le Cool Compound – Science Week
11:00 – 18:00, Sat 16 Nov

The Printfest is an event that is part of the Science Week 2013. – Did you know the development of modern science would not have been possible without the invention of movable type and the printing press by Johann Gutenberg? His invention led to the spread of scientific ideas across Europe and by the end of 16th century, anyone could learn about the basic principles of geometry, anatomy, astronomy and physics!
Suitable for all ages, Printfest gives you the opportunity to witness Gutenberg’s invention of letterpress printing in action as volunteer former printers and typesetters demonstrate highlights of the Museums’ collection. Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

End of the Green Dream in Ecuador – Talk
18:30, Thu 21 Nov
LASC, 5 Merrion Row, Dublin 2
The Latin America Solidarity Centre (LASC) invites you to the fifth Thursday Night Talks on Latin America. Chris O’Connell from LASC will talk about the cancellation of the “Yasuni ITT Initiative”.
When announced in 2007, the Yasuni ITT Initiative was hailed as a triumph for the environmental movement and was thought to represent the beginning of a new and alternative mode of global economics. The plan was: In return for donations of around half the value of the crude oil thought to be under the surface of this incredibly bio-diverse region, Ecuador would refrain from drilling, thereby protecting the region for humanity. But after years of disappointing progress, President Rafael Correa announced in August his intention to cancel the scheme and move to drill for oil in Yasuni.

Ships’ Printers & Printing… – Lecture
18:30, Thu 21 Nov
National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Haddington Road, Dublin 4
“Lost at Sea? Ships’ Printers & Printing” with Dr Teresa Breathnach is a free talk in the Print Museum.
The large ocean liners of the early to mid-twentieth century have become symbols of both luxury and tragedy. Ephemera (i.e. transitory written or printed matter not meant to be retained or preserved) associated with them always had souvenir status and is now highly sought after by collectors. However, few would realise that much of it was printed on board of the ships. This lecture is about how these print shops produced a variety of items from menus to newspapers, what facilities they had to produce them and how these sailor printers became part of the promotion of ocean travel.
Admission is free and no booking required.

Fairness and justice in Ireland: Bankrupt developer vs. Unemployed
It won’t surprise most when I tell you that there is a grotesque injustice when it comes to unemployed and developers, but look at these figures and cry: An unemployed adult over 25 years of age can get a maximum of EUR 188 of Jobseeker’s Allowance per week. That amounts to just EUR 9776 per year. The wife of Larry O’Mahony, a bankrupt developer, on the other hand was told yesterday by a court that living expenses of EUR 9,000 PER MONTH are entirely justifiable. ( www.rte.ie/news/2013/1113/486532-larry-omahony-christine-connolly-court/ )
Now, I have to admit that I am not someone who thinks that nobody should earn more than he average industrial salary. If someone achieved huge success and can justify getting/paying himself a salary of 100s of thousands, then he/she should absolutely get it (This does NOT apply to people working for RTE, by the way! R Tubridy and Pat Kenny DESERVING their outrageous salaries is doubtful.).
The problem here is that a bankrupt unemployed ex-developer and an unemployed person who was never a developer and most likely had less influence over becoming unemployed than the developer over becoming bankrupt, are really exactly on the same level. EUR 9776 per year vs EUR 9000 per month! Exactly on the same level! Very odd society we live in!
