Hi all!
Did I say last week “quieter period”? I should not have said quiet. :-) Thirty (!) events more this week than last week! I will never say “quiet” again. ;-))
[ad]
We have the first Christmas Market among the events this week. But it is not called that, instead the name is “Winter Fair”. And the Christmas Light Ceremonies in Dublin City are starting in the coming week. Grafton Street will be the start on Thursday, then Henry Street at the following weekend and finally, on 24 November, O’Connell Street will conclude the sequence. At the latest at that point, we better give up any remianing resistance against the too-early-start-of-Christmas. It is nice to see the lights again, especially now with the shorter and significantly colder days. (I think I could never live in Australia/NZ. Christmas in summer time is just toooo weird for me.) So let’s just enjoy it like we did when we were children!
And now to the regular reminders! Thanks for reading:
Remember everytime you discover something new through the Dublin Event Guide, tell your friends, colleagues and families about it. Tell them about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and keep spreading the word about this weekly publication! Tell the people you meet about it and suggest to them to subscribe too. They can do that easily on the right hand side at www.dublineventguide.com and they can also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide
Sending the Dublin Event Guide bills costs EUR 170 every month and I need to find that every single month. A contribution of EUR 1 per month from you would be great if you enjoy the Dublin Event Guide. You can either choose to subscribe (EUR 12 per year) or you can contribute with a once-off sum here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Every cent will be used for the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have a great weekend + week!

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
I have to admit that I have a soft spot for stories along the line “child or underdog woman/man unexpectedly blows people away” and a perfect environment for these stories are the “xyz country got talent” shows. This week I found a video clip from the “Holland Got Talent” show. A nine-year old girl sings opera. Watch it and shake your head in disbelief: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEMR3A4WLC8
Why is this a “Feel Good Slot” video clip because it should remind us of all the (hidden) talent that is out there, not only in singing, but also in all other areas. Without a doubt you have a talent that only a few people know about. Maybe you don’t know about it yourself because you just have not discovered (or allowed it to be discovered) yet? Follow your passion and do the unexpected!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Paul A, Brian C, Anne R, Deirdre B, Oliver M, Kostas R, Elaine K and Mark C were the wonderful people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot, every cent counts! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small contribution and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
If you have written a book and want to get published, quickly check the online workshop from 10:00 on Saturday to make sure you don’tmiss it. If that is not you, then you can relax. ;-) This weekend have a look at the Winter Fair in Killiney and the Nearly Zero Energy Buildings Open Door event on Sat+Sun. Two totally different events, but I find them both interesting. The Science Week takes place from Sunday and while many really interesting events booked out in what seems was seconds, there are still a good few interesting events available. On Sunday is also the Fusion Sunday Market, this time with a Diwali scheme.
And some interesting events during the week:
Milk and Cookie Stories on Tuesday and also on Tuesday for women the “Leaderise” event.
On Wednesday there is a Tequila tasting and an interesting “Seven Deadly Sins” talk in the National College of Ireland.
On Thursday the Grafton Street Christmas Lights will be switched on and the Rising Star Music Recitals will take place
And on Friday the Dublin Sidewalk Astronomers will tell you all about stars and planets.

Secret Castle of Magic – Ticket Competition
Fridays 19:30
Secret Castle of Magic, adjacent to Westwood Gym, Clontarf Road, Clontarf, Dublin 3
Dublin’s most magical and spooky show experience the “Secret Castle of Magic” runs every Friday at 19:30 in the Bram Stoker’s Castle Dracula in Clontarf. It is not suitable for adults of nervous disposition or anyone under 14 years, but everyone else will have a great night. It is a 2-hour show filled with amazing magic and chilling spookiness.
The show comes in two parts. There is the incredible Vampire Show and a Hilarious Comedy Magic show. In addition you will be brought on a tour of Bram Stoker’s ‘Castle Dracula’ with the Characters from Dracula ‘Renfield’ and ‘Van Helsing’. You will wander through the Castle’s Tunnels, Bridges, Gargoyle Courtyards, Haunted Library and off course the Amazing Graveyard Theatre.
Tickets are EUR 25 for the 2-hour experience (both Shows and the Spooky Castle Tour with Renfield and Van Helsing) and you can book your tickets (or find out more) by calling 01 8512151. More show details are also on the website www.secretcastleofmagic.com/ or on the Facebook Page www.facebook.com/SecretCastleOfMagic
Meeting point is at 19:30 (sharp!) at the Westwood Gym Reception in Clontarf on Clontarf Road, at the edge of Fairview Park and next to the Clontarf Dart Station.
I had the pleasure to experience the show a few years ago and it was brilliant then, but I am told it got even better since! The castle got renovated recently and the show has only started again a few weeks ago. To celebrate that and to let you all know about this great attraction, the organisers have made 3 pairs of tickets available for a competition among the Dublin Event Guide readers. But they told me that you have to earn your tickets and answer a difficult question. So, here it goes: Send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com with SPOOKY in the subject line and with your full name and mobile phone number in the body of the mail. In addition you need to answer this question in your mail: “What was the name of Dracula’s manservant who ate bugs?”. Your mail has to be with me by 13:00 on Wed 13 Nov!
The tickets are for the coming Friday (15 November at 19:30), so please only enter the competition if you are available that night.

Promote your product or (non-free) event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 18,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? In most cases not a cent! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

Giving money for free!?
Do you happily receive the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week? And do you make use of it at least sometimes? And would you like to help to keep it going? If you read this, then the answer is probably three times YES!
But I understand that giving a donation is not everybody’s thing. I can assure you that it will only be used to cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, but wouldn’t it be even neater if you could give money without having to use your own?
This is indeed possible! When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
www.bookdepository.co.uk?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and
www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon
You can also copy these links and send them to your friends. When you click on the link you books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via my links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8%. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it still would amount to a fair amount.
And if you want to buy from
Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for
LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

DCTV has closed down
Have you ever heard of DCTV (Dublin Community TV)? Many never have and I guess that is one of the reasons why they closed down this week. But I know that some watched it regularly or at least sometimes. It was a local TV station that was mainly funded by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. So it was never viable. And as soon as the BAI cut the funding drastically, DCTV had to close. It is a pity never the less, because Community TV has a place in the media landscape and gives people an opportunity to gather an experience as volunteers in a field that otherwise would be very difficult to get into. www.dctv.ie/

Buy a boat, we are going under! …if the ice caps melt…
Dramatic pictures were produced by the National Geographic. The pictures show the Earth after all land-based ice has melted to to an increase in our temperatures. The se-level will rise by 66 metres and London will be gone! So will be Holland and Denmark and most of the West of Ireland. Have a look at two pictures here www.thejournal.ie/ice-ireland-global-warming-1164166-Nov2013/ and find a a link there to the National Geogprahic Pictures.
Good news? Yes, it will happen AFTER Christmas! ;-) Approx. 5000 years after Christmas! And it is not certain that it wil happen like this.

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Winter Fair – Gift Fair in Killiney
10:00 – 18:00, Sat 09 Nov
Fitzpatrick Castle Hotel, Killiney Hill Road, Killiney, Co. Dublin
The “Winter Fair” is really the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Enterprise Board Christmas Market, but it is too early for that, so they call it a Winter Fair. (Some years ago this event took place in the Marlay Park House.)
The fair supports local businesses and there will be stalls with 37 businesses selling clothes, cosmetics, home ware, art, books, toys, jewellery, cabdles, soaps, ceramics, wood craft and food.
The fair takes place from Fri 08 – Sun 10 November and admission is free. The Killiney Castle Hotel has a big car park, but if you are not motorised, there is a special shuttle bus linking the Hotel to the Dart station. (I assume it is Killiney Dart station.)

Dublin (various locations)
The “Nearly Zero Energy Buildings Open Doors” is a free event that is taking place this weekend (08-10 November). This event is happening in 10 countries under the “Intelligent Energy Europe” programme and it is very similar to the yearly Open House weekend in October. At Open House, people can visit buildings that are normally not accessible to learn about the architecture of the building. For the Nearly Zero Energy Building Open Doors event you can also visit buildings, but the focus is purely on very low energy buildings.
The event will giv you a cahnce to visit really good examples of low energy new build and retrofit projects to inspire you to aim for similar standards for future projects. Over 40 buildings are participating participating in Ireland and there are six buildings in Dublin. They are in
St Margaret’s Road, Finglas
Balbriggan
Mount Merrion
Stillorgan, Co. Dublin
Sandycove, Co. Dublin
Monkstown, Co. Dublin
All visits (guided tours) are free but need to be booked in advance. You can view the participating buildings and make bookings on www.nzeb-opendoors.ie Some buildings are already booked out, but for others there is still a bit of availability. Sounds like a very interesting event for home-owners and people interested in building/architecture. The charity “Energy Action” is organising the Irish contribution and I hope that it will grow in coming years.

Grow your own….. – Science Gallery Exhibition
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 09 Nov
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The newest Science Gallery exhibition (25 Oct – 19 Jan) is called GROW YOUR OWN…. and is exploring synthetic biology and life after nature. How does the future of designed and artificially enhanced life look like? What possibilities are there.
This exhibition is very different from the previous ILLUSION exhibition. GROW YOUR OWN is a lot more scientific and very futuristic. Maybe you could call it “science and art fiction”? The exhibition is full of interesting ideas and concepts, but also contains eye-brow raising stuff like human cheese and self-diagnosing excr ement. Younger children will be lost in it, so it is more suitable for a slightly older audience (16+) in comparison to the previous exhibition.
I was at the Science Gallery for the media preview and the launch event (for all Science Gallery members) and I found it so interesting that I will be back again. As with all Science Gallery exhibitions, I definitely recommend visiting it, but this time you have to bring a bit more time to comprehend all 21 exhibits and you need to bring your curiosity for science. It is worth it, though! The great (and unique) thing about the Science Gallery is that there are always mediators there, helpers that explain every exhibit in simple terms.
The exhibition is open Tuesday-Sunday. (Weekdays: 12:00-20:00, Sat+Sun: 12:00-18:00) Admission is free.

Science Week 2013 takes place from 10-17 Nov nationwide. The theme this year is “Explore the XTRA-Ordinary!” and it will give you an opportunity to go “behind the scenes” of everyday life and processes that are taking place in front of our own eyes.

With over 650 free events everyone can and should get involved and learn about the XTRA-Ordinary things in your life.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 10 Nov
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Corcovado: An Irish-Brazilian Culture Night
19:30, Wed 13 Nov
Button Factory, Curved Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
An Irish-Brazilian Culture Night with Brazilian music, dance, food and culture and an Irish-Brazilian audience takes place in the Button Factory.
The admission policy is very much at the fringes as far as the Dublin Event Guide “ethos” is concerned: Admission is not free, but on a ‘pay what you can’ basis. If it is in form of a donation after the event, there is no problem with that approach. However if it is a in-determined admission charge before you enter the premises it might be even worse than a specified charge. But, hey, you know now, so you can decide based on that.
The event sounds interesting: Capoeira and Samba displays, Brazilian food and drink provided by Boteco Brazil, and the main performance is by an ensemble of Trinity Orchestra and members of Dublin-based bossa nova group, Nova Collective.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Climate change happens over night in Ireland!?
Luckily the drink water supply problem that affected 1.5 mio people in Dublin for nearly a week is sorted at least for now, but it was interesting what the Dublin City Engineer Michael Phillips said a few days ago when he was asked about a possible reason. According to this article here www.thejournal.ie/dublin-water-shortage-1160783-Nov2013/ he suggested that climate change could be one of the reasons for the water problem. Now this is really odd! Because there was no problem last week and then climate change happened over night and messed with the water quality? I thought climate change was something gradual and stretched out over many years. I obviously got that wrong!
Interestingly I heard an allegation during the week that seems to come from someone in the know that said the problem occurred because a cleaning procedure at the Ballymore Eustace water treatment plant was not carried out properly in the summer. If that allegation (or rumour) was true, how probabe would it be that the City Engineer or any of his employees would raise the hand and say “Yes, we screwed up a few months ago, that’s why we have that problem.” Not so probably, right?
Passing the ball seems to be a more interesting game: In this article www.thejournal.ie/dublin-city-council-water-restrictions-phil-hogan-irish-water-1160720-Nov2013/ it says that Dublin City asked the Environment Minister Philip Hogan and executives from the State’s new water body, Irish Water to report to them how it can be ensured that the same won’t happen again. Odd again! Irish Water is not in charge yet, they currently have no responsibility and are still in formation. Why did the City councillors demand that an instance that is not even in charge yet reports back to them?
