Hi all!
Another super super late delivery of this week’s edition. But this week I know EXACTLY what went wrong! I start on a Thursday evening and then work through the night (no sleep) until all is done. For some reason I was NOT able to kep my eyes open this week. I fell asleep sitting at my desk during the night and consequently it took many hours more to finish all. Apologies! I think I will need to use matchsticks to keep my eyes open. I will try that next week. :-P
[ad]
Thanks for all your donations last week, I appreciate that a few people stepped up and were prepared to help immediately when it looked as if there was a danger that a hole developped in the “collection box”. I need approximately 14 donations of EUR 12 per month. That is about 2.5 donations per week. If everybody was prepared to help, we would only need a bit more than ONE Euro from each person PER YEAR! And there would even be money left over to do some improvements! But that will remain a dream. I think.
By the way: Last week there was a bit of an issue with my PayPal account. If you had intended to donate to the Dublin Event Guide and your money suddenly was refunded to your account, please contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com. It wasn’t me being ungrateful! I very much appreciate every cent because every bit helps.
So, time to send this newsletter (today I wrote the Intro here AFTER the whole Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) was completed. ;-)
Here just the usual reminders! Thanks for reading:
And remember everytime you discover something new through the Dublin Event Guide, tell your friends, colleagues and families about it. Tell them about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and keep spreading the word about this weekly publication! Tell the people you meet about it and suggest to them to subscribe too. They can do that easily on the right hand side at www.dublineventguide.com and they can also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide
Sending the Dublin Event Guide bills costs EUR 170 every month and I need to find that every single month. A contribution of EUR 1 per month from you would be great if you enjoy the Dublin Event Guide. You can either choose to subscribe (EUR 12 per year) or you can contribute with a once-off sum here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Every cent will be used for the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).
And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:
Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have a great weekend + week!

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
This week’s Feel Good message is indeed very simple and doesn’t require any further explanation. It is a quote by JD Houston:
If you want something in your life, you’ve never had,
you’ll have to do something, you’ve never done!

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Geraldine R, Aiden B, Jacinta O’B, Sophie P-L, Mairin M, Wendy C, Seamus C, Mary K, Carla B, Fiona O’R and Karen O’G were the wonderful people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot, every cent counts! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small contribution and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
I have to admit that this week, I find it relatively challenging to recommend a MUST GO event. There are lots of little things taking place, but no headline event at all. We will have that a number of times in the coming week and in that case I sometimes suggest that you go “back to basics”. Museums if the weather is bad. Temple Bar Food Market and Designer Mart and some of the other markets that always take place. In the evening, check out the regulars: Comedy Crunch, Saucy Sunday, Sunday Roast, etc. The reason why they are in operation for many many years is because they work and are popular. When lots of new things happen we easily get distracted from them, now it is time to show them our love again. ;-)

Promote your product or (non-free) event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 17,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? In most cases not a cent! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

Giving money for free!?
Do you happily receive the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week? And do you make use of it at least sometimes? And would you like to help to keep it going? If you read this, then the answer is probably three times YES!
But I understand that giving a donation is not everybody’s thing. I can assure you that it will only be used to cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, but wouldn’t it be even neater if you could give money without having to use your own?
This is indeed possible! When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:
www.bookdepository.co.uk?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and
www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon
You can also copy these links and send them to your friends. When you click on the link you books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via my links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8%. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it still would amount to a fair amount.
And if you want to buy from
Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for
LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544
Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

Upcoming Events – UCD Science Expression
This week the Upcoming Events Category is not “stretchable” enough. For some technical reasons I can only fit 6 events there and therefore I will add one event – which you have to know about – here:
UCD SCIENCE EXPRESSION – Science + Film Festival
31 Oct – 03 Nov
UCD Science Expression is Ireland’s only dedicated science film festival. There are admission fees for some of the films, but others are free and I expect that the tickets will go like hot cakes. The festival is still two weeks away, but don’t wait. Get your tickets now before they are all gone. If you love science, have a soft spot for scientists and appreciate the innovative thinking of researchers, then UCD Science Expression is for you. www.ucdscienceexpression.ie/

Dine in Dublin
Dine in Dublin takes place twice every year. It is a week long food festival (21-27 Oct) where top restaurants in the City Centre offer giveaways, special events, special dishes and special offers. There will be demonstrations, competitions, wine tastings, a Pop-Up Theatre performance, live msuic performances, a cocktail masterclass and a mini-Oktoberfest. The website www.dineindublin.ie lists all participating restaurants and shows the special menus. It doesn’t list the special events yet, as far as I could see, but maybe that will be added before Monday?

Children’s Book Festival
For the whole month of October the 23rd CBI Children’s Book Festival will take place. Libraries, schools and bookshops across the country will host events with Irish and international children’s writers and illustrators. The 2012 festival reached more than 50,000 young readers across Ireland through more than 1,000.
This year’s international authors Conrad Mason (The Demon’s Watch), Joseph Delaney (the Spooks series) and Andrew Lane (Young Sherlock Holmes series) will come to Ireland and together with Irish authors and illustrators including Alan Early (Father of Lies Chronicles), Brian Gallagher (Across the Divide) and Claire Hennessy (Dear Diary) they will be meeting children at theatres, arts venues and libraries nationwide.
The list of events is much to long to include all events in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), so if you have children make sure you check www.childrensbooksireland.ie/childrens-book-festival/ for all relevant information.

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

The “Sea Buckthorn Berry Collection” is a Food for Free Foraging Event and everyone is welcome. You will first find out what to do with the berries and then you will harvest them:
11:00 Talk on Sea-Buckthorn and how to cook it: Chef Liam Moloughney of Moloughney’s Restaurant, Clontarf
11:30-13:30 Collection of Sea Buckthorn Berries
Sea Buckthorn is an invasive species for the unique habitats of Bull Island. Dispersal of its berries by birds at this time of the year is the main way by which it spreads on the island. The berries are one of the most plant enriched sources of Vitamin C, 15 times more concentrated than oranges. They can be used for jams, preserves, pies and lotions. Help conserving the habitat by collecting the berries. The bush is thorny, so bring gloves and secateurs.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up

The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

“Banter” is taking part in the Bodytonic’s Beatyard Festival and they will look at the issue of housing in Dublin. From changes in the rental market to the increase in price for family homes located in certain prime suburbs to the provision of social housing, is housing always going to be a hot button issue for capital city denizens? Bram Stoker Festival
26-28 October
Dublin (various)
The Bram Stoker Festival is a celebration of all things macabre, strange, supernatural with some good-old fashioned Halloween fun. It takes place from Sat 26 – Mon 28 October, over the bank holiday weekend, and the reason why I am telling you already this week is because most events are free, but need pre-booking. So check out http;//www.bramstokerfestival.com and www.facebook.com/bramstokerdublin
Taking the legacy of Dublin horror novelist Bram Stoker and his gothic novel ‘Dracula’ as inspiration, the festival will have “free pop-up performances of spine-chilling street theatre and sinister sounds, a city-wide Vampire Hunt for families and friends, spooky movies in the open-air, blood curdling literary happenings, terrifying theatre, walks & talks, and a very special event will take place in the spectacular surrounds of Dublin Castle.”

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
Ryanair Logic
We all have to be hugely grateful to Ryanair for having been the only reason the other airlines were prepared to look at new ways that would allow to reduce the cost of flying. But being grateful for a great deed in the past doesn’t mean that Ryanair should get a “free pass” for all eternity. Since they shook up the airline market, they have done LOTS and LOTS of bad and unacceptable stuff as well. And their claim that they are cheap is absolutely not true anymore. Still cheaper than airline tickets once were, but the really competitive times are long over. We all have our Ryanair stories and if someone wrote them all down, you would have the best book about how NOT to treat customers, but I didn’t even want to go there today.
The odd thing that I wanted to highlight today was the Ryanair reaction to the budget announcements during the week. Ireland introduced an airport departure tax a few years ago. It was initially EUR 10 and then got reduced to EUR 3. Michael O’Leary, the Ryanair CEO, threatened the Irish government with reducing the number of flights from and to Ireland and he did reduce. He said he will increase again when that tax is gone. And I thought at the time that he had a point. Now that it was announced that from 01 April (not immediately!) the tax will be removed, he immediately promised to bring 1 mio more passengers to Ireland.
So, it seems that these EUR 3 really were a big big problem that made flying to Ireland uncompetitive and expensive, right?
But wait! Was it not Ryanair who decided to randomly and without need or justification increase the luggage charges by whopping EUR 20 for the summer? How is EUR 3 a problem and EUR 20 is not a problem? Michael O’Leary really often talks cr@p.

It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
