Hi all!

Where do I start today? Maybe with the fact that I didn’t get finished! It took me soooo long to write this week’s e-mail magazine. I had some challenges throughout the night some technical and some other and that lead to me breaking my old record of late sending. Something I am not proud of! It was the latest ever sending of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Not good. So more thinking has to be done and decisions need to be made. For now I need to get this e-mail out to you! ;-)

[ad]

Check today’s Dublin News, there is some interesting stuff. Not all is directly Dublin related, but I suggest you read all Dublin News article for a change.

October is nearly half over, but I am far away from having the EUR 170. I got just one donation last week. :-O If you find some change in your pockets, think of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events). Thanks! To donate go here every cent counts.

And everytime you discover something new through the Dublin Event Guide, tell your friends, colleagues and families about it. Tell them about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and keep spreading the word about this weekly publication! Tell the people you meet about it and suggest to them to subscribe too. They can do that easily on the right hand side at www.dublineventguide.com and they can also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide

Sending the Dublin Event Guide bills costs EUR 170 every month and I need to find that every single month. A contribution of EUR 1 per month from you would be great if you enjoy the Dublin Event Guide. You can either choose to subscribe (EUR 12 per year) or you can contribute with a once-off sum here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm Every cent will be used for the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events).

And this is a great opportunity to help the Dublin Event Guide for absolutely no cost to you:

Without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately (in the same session) after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!

Have a great weekend + week!

–Joerg

Feel good slot

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!

This week’s Feel Good message sounds simple and it IS relatively simple and straight forward. However, some might struggle a little with it:

“The outcome of your life is a direct reflection of the story you keep telling yourself!”

Now, after you read that – and especially if you don’t like what you read – think about it for a moment.

Are you focusing on the things you want to achieve, the good things in life, the successes and the goals?

Or are you focusing on why you have not yet achieved what you really want, on the things that you see as hurdles, on the problems? What would happen if you changed it??

Support

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:

Last week only Sareda D helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot, every cent counts! But to cover the cost more generous supporters are needed! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small contribution and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!

I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.

You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

Joergs Picks

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.

This weekend the main events are a little smaller, but the Re-opening of the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) will probably a very busy events. For the altruistic ones, you can help cleaning the Royal Canal. And for the ladies, check out the Swopshop Roadshow on Saturday. The Irish Volunteer Fair takes place too. Either on Saturday or Sunday you should check out the Sculpture in Context if you are interested. It is the very last week!

On Sunday the Fusion Sunday takes place in teh Food Co-Op and if you want to see the Ferocious Mingle Marcade for the last time in Thomas Street, then do that on Sunday too (it will move to Camden Street!)

During the week there are a number of interesting talks and if you are interested in science check out the “Mission Higgs” exhibition in UCD. And if Documentaries is your thing, check on Monday the 8×8 Documentary Filmfest.

Promote your product or (non-free) event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!

The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 17,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? In most cases not a cent! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

Giving money for free!?

Do you happily receive the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) every week? And do you make use of it at least sometimes? And would you like to help to keep it going? If you read this, then the answer is probably three times YES!

But I understand that giving a donation is not everybody’s thing. I can assure you that it will only be used to cover the cost for the Dublin Event Guide, but wouldn’t it be even neater if you could give money without having to use your own?

This is indeed possible! When you buy books online, buy them from Book Depository or from Amazon and use these links to go to the website:

www.bookdepository.co.uk?a_aid=dubevg for Book Depository and
www.amazon.co.uk/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&linkCode=ur2&tag=dubeveguiforf-21 for Amazon

You can also copy these links and send them to your friends. When you click on the link you books cost exactly the same as if you went to the Amazon or Book Depository website directly. But if you go via my links above, the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) will get 5-8%. That’s not a lot, but if you and lots of other people used that link every time, it still would amount to a fair amount.

And if you want to buy from
Groupon use this www.awin1.com/cread.php?s=344250&v=4345&q=162396&r=140544 or for
LivingSocial use this www.awin1.com/awclick.php?mid=4319&id=140544

Giving money for free! That’s how easy it is. ;-) Thanks!

Bridges of Dublin – New website

Dublin has a few of them: There are bridges over the Liffey, over the Grand Canal and over the Royal Canal but that is not all, there are plenty more smaller bridges and a number of Rail bridges over streets etc.

Dublin City has now launched a website that gives a number of bridges a life and a proper identity. Location, History, Architecture, Name and even Stories about and around the bridges are captured on this website.

A littler anorak-y maybe? Well, a resource of information about something that is part of our environment, so that’s not REALLY anorak-y. ;-)

By the way, many bridges are not included (yet?), but a great start is made with all Liffey Bridges and a few more on top of that.

Check out the site here; www.bridgesofdublin.ie/

Google Changes Terms and Conditions – Watch out!!

Suddenly last night Google had a small blue notification bar at the top of the Google Search Page and that small bar mentioned in small print that Google will change their Terms & Conditions and you can check them out and they will then become valid from 11 November.

Well, many people don’t read Terms & Conditions, but in this case it is definitely worth it: Google wants to use your information INCLUDING your picture to advertise for other goods. If you ever commented or expressed online that you liked a certain product Google would like to show your picture (from Google+ or from your GMail or Google account) next to that product. Sneaky? Big time!

So check out the Ts&Cs and then if you are not in favour of the new changes, change it back. The Ts&Cs are here www.google.ie/intl/en/policies/terms/changes/ and if you don’t like this, you can change it here plus.google.com/settings/endorsements?hl=en Scroll down and untick the box, then click on SAVE.

Children’s Book Festival

For the whole month of October the 23rd CBI Children’s Book Festival will take place. Libraries, schools and bookshops across the country will host events with Irish and international children’s writers and illustrators. The 2012 festival reached more than 50,000 young readers across Ireland through more than 1,000.

This year’s international authors Conrad Mason (The Demon’s Watch), Joseph Delaney (the Spooks series) and Andrew Lane (Young Sherlock Holmes series) will come to Ireland and together with Irish authors and illustrators including Alan Early (Father of Lies Chronicles), Brian Gallagher (Across the Divide) and Claire Hennessy (Dear Diary) they will be meeting children at theatres, arts venues and libraries nationwide.

The list of events is much to long to include all events in the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), so if you have children make sure you check www.childrensbooksireland.ie/childrens-book-festival/ for all relevant information.

Worscht – Sausage Restaurant

“Worscht” is word for Wurst (sausage) in SOME German dialects. Coincidentally where I come from it is exactly that word.

Now a new eatery has opened in George’s Street Arcade that is called “Worscht”. (It will be interesting to find out where the owner is from, but it is certain that he is from Germany. :-) ) He sells all sorts of sausages in a restaurant set-up with potato curls (??).

Most of the sausages look and sound very interesting and tasty, so I guess I will have to try it out at some stage. Check it out here: www.facebook.com/worscht.world or here www.worscht-world.com Oliver, the owner, makes the sausages himself.

If you make it to “Worscht” before me, let me know what you think about it.

Opportunities

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Exhibitions

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/

On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Swopshop … The Roadshow

11:00 – 18:00, Sat 12 Oct

Morgan Hotel, 10 Fleet Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

Trade your unworn clothes for fancier ones at the Swopshop Roadshow in the Morgan Hotel this Saturday.

For a number of years “Swopshop” was a popular but small boutique in Temple Bar and now a new format is bringing Swopshop back again and it is bigger and better. The Roadshow is one-day fashion exchange event with additional features (3D makeovers, style clinic and photoshoots).

You can bring your clothes to upgrade them by swopping with others or if you have nothing to swop, you can buy pre-worn clothes for very competitive prices. All clothes are either designer clothes or high-end labels. A service charge of between EUR 0 and EUR 25 is payable to the Swopshop Roadshow. And here is an example:

A guest brings a French Connection dress in perfect condition (worth approximately €90 new) and trades for a Ted Baker dress (approximately same value new). The guest pays the service charge of just EUR 8, i.e a small fraction of original cost or cost of buying new. Or they can trade down and pay less (even EUR 0) or upgrade to a higher category and pay slightly more. Even if you have nothing to trade on the day, there will be a price promise which means the absolute max. you will pay is EUR 30 per piece! Sounds cool!

Even better: Admission is free! There is a limit of people the venue can take, so if you arrive at a time when lots of others are there you might have to wait a bit to get in. And there is one other prerequisite. To understand how the whole event works, you are expected to read the “How To” before the event. The link is here: www.swopshop.ie/roadshow-morgan-hotel-event.php

Happy Swopping! ;-)

Demonstration against Monsanto

14:00, Sat 12 Oct

Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square, Dublin 1

I am not sure if this protest march wills till go ahead considering that only 60 minutes earlier the protest against the Budget will assemble at the Garden Of Remembrance and will probably have some speeches at the GPO. The march against Monsanto is allegedly assembling at 14:00 and will then go Kildare Street where the Department of Agriculture is located. Busy O’Connell Street if it is going ahead.

Monsanto is the massive international companies that has their finger in everything from genetically modified crops to herbicides etc. and that is destroying food as we know it. Monsanto would prefer to replace nature with their own chemical and biological engineering and in the process they make seeds so expensive that developing countries can’t afford them.

If you have never heard of Monsanto I strongly recommend that you inform yourself about what the issue is that many many people see as a serious problem.

Budget 2014 Announcement

14:00, Tue 15 Oct

Dublin (various locations)

The Budget 2014 for Ireland will be announced on Tuesday. In the past it was announced just about a month before it was applied (i.e. in the beginning of December), so why now in October? The EU wants to get a chance to check the budgets of the EU countries before they become law so that countries that have lost control of their finances can be reigned in. The deadline is 15 October and therefore the Irish Budget for next year will also be announced on 15 October.

Apart from the expectation that it will be ANOTHER painful budget with cuts and tax increases because Ireland has to save another whopping 2.5 billion, there is (probably! – I am not an expert) a significant difference to previous years: In the past tax increases for alcohol, cigarettes and fuel often already took force from the midnight of the day of the announcement. But that I would expect that this required that the Dail had approved the Budget. With the announcement of a Draft Budget that will then be checked by the EU, it probably means that no tax increases will come into effect on the same day. Is that a big change? Not at all. The pain the budget will cause will be the bigger problem.

All radio, TV and newspaper websites have special Budget coverage on their sites and you will be able to find all the details there. I am not sure if the announcement will take place at 14:00 or any other time. So check closer to the date.

Refresh: Symmetry, Scala & Software

18:30 – 19:30, Tue 15 Oct

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

REFRESH DUBLIN provides a cross-discipline insight into all things design, interactive, creative and technical, so that different disciplines can learn from each other. This month’s talk is entitled “Symmetry, Scala & Software” by Eric Bowman (Chief Architect & VP of Platform Engineering at GILT).

The concept of symmetry is pervasive across many fields: art, architecture, mathematics, even fashion. In the past decade or so, technologists have begun to talk about symmetry in the context of programming languages and the software programs created with them. In this talk, he will explore the meaning and significance of symmetry beyond its superficial, primarily visual characteristics, and connect it to the practice of writing software.

Admission is free, but booking is required on the website below, where you will also find more information,

The Simpsons and their Mathematical Secrets

18:00 – 19:15, Thu 17 Oct

Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2

Some have seen philosophy embedded in episodes of The Simpsons; others have detected elements of psychology and religion. Simon Singh, bestselling author of “Fermat’s Last Theorem”, “The Code Book” and “The Big Bang”, instead makes the compelling case that what The Simpsons’ writers are most passionate about is mathematics.

He reveals how the writers have drip-fed morsels of number theory into the series over the last twenty-five years. There are so many mathematical references in The Simpsons, and in its sister program, Futurama, that they could form the basis of an entire university course.

Admission is free, but booking is required. Find more details on the website below.

“Foremost” Silliness

Do you know the word “foremost”? What does it mean? The Merriem Webster Dictionary says

“fore-most” (adjective); most important, 1: first in a series or progression; 2: of first rank or position

So if it does mean “most important” or “best” (which is of the first rank), then why do people not use it? Is the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) the foremost day-by-day event guide? Or is it the best? Or the one ranked first? (In what ranking system?) I am convinced that the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is the best day-by-day event guide focusing on free events.

Why do people use “foremost”? In a week I would say that I get AT LEAST 5 press releases that claim that the performer, event, or whatever that is promoted in the Press Release is the “foremost” whatever.

The Alliance Francaise wrote on their website “Aragon was the foremost French poet of the twentieth century. A surrealist, a communist and a member of the Resistance, he made his mark not just with his poetry but also with his vivid personality.” “Foremost” here means really nothing.

My suspicion is that PR agencies and event organisers use “foremost” where they are not brave enough to write “best” or any other superlative. “Foremost” is sufficiently hazy. It means something good but we don’t really know what. If I said band xyz is the “best” band, people of different taste would contradict me. There can be only ONE “best”. But if I call the band “foremost” band, then nobody will take issue with it because nobody really knows what it means. AND there can be LOTS of “foremost” bands.

So “foremost” is a superlative without meaning!? DON’T USE IT THEN!!! Odd!!!

It would help me if you told me in an e-mail why you decided to unsubscribe, but that is not a “Must”. If you only want to stop receiving the newsletter temporarily, you can – if you wish – discuss this with me by e-mail so that we find a solution that makes sense to you. If you unsubscribe using the link at the bottom of the mail and there is a chance that you – at some stage – want to re-subscribe, please make sure that you keep a mail with the “unsubscribe link” because I will not be able to add you anymore to the list once you have unsubscribed using this link. The only way you can re-subscribe is to follow that specific link and change the settings yourself.
This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
