Hi all!
So this was a bit of a mixed week! The great news is that we arrived at and exceeded 17,000 subscribers. 20k is not that far away. ;-) Actually, doubling the number of the Dublin Event Guide users by spreading the word better, was one of the aims that I had included in the Arthur Guinness Project Application (AGP).
[ad]
Ohh, and that was the bad news during the week:
The judges of AGP have – in their ultimate wisdom – decided that the Dublin Event Guide will not be invited to the next round, the interview round. It was disappointing, but I knew from the beginning that depending on the judge’s flexibility when it comes to defining “Art”, we could be kicked out a lot earlier than we should. That’s why it was important to get not just in the shortlist, but in a good position. Our Position 9 wasn’t enough, but I am not sure if Pos 1 would have pleased the judges enough. (In the Music category the Position 1 project got a rejection letter as well. And I heard from at least two other “Art” project that were above us, that also were rejected.) It will be interesting to see what projects Guinness will declare winners!
What now? Well, the simple answer is: All will continue! We will grow slower, some improvements might have to get postponed, but AGP is not needed to keep the Dublin Event Guide going. But wait!! What if we still got Guinness to help?? Maybe even without asking them??
We don’t need a massive amount and not all in one go and you all invested so much effort that it would be a pity if we couldn’t achieve the goals. So what do you think about this:
Approx. 1000 people helped voting! That’s a lot of people. I would think that each of the people helping (and that includes you) knows at least ONE person in their environment that drinks Guinness (maybe that is even yourself). If we all could find ONE person who would pledge to drink 2x pints of Guinness less in the next 12 months and if that person gave the EUR 10 to you instead of giving it to Guinness, then Guinness could still fund the Dublin Event Guide….indirectly…and without asking them! ;-) What do you think? Is that a crazy idea or are you on board?
This would be the next step then:
Click on DOINGITALONE
You will take the 10 Euro from Guinness and then click on this “DOINGITALONE” link and fill in the details on the following page. Then TWO (not more!!) payments of exactly EUR 5 will be made by you. The first one now and the second one in 6 months, in March 2014. The 10 Euro are money that you or your friend would otherwise give to Guinness. If you don’t drink Guinness, you are allowed to, but don’t have to contribute from your own money, we only want Guinness’ money. But if you find a friend, family member who is prepared to help you to achieve this maybe you can still help.
I know it is a mischievous way of getting help from Guinness, but we helped them a lot by advertising for them for weeks when “Arthur Guinness Projects” was mentioned everywhere, so I am sure ;-) they would see the fairness in my suggestion.
I will keep you posted about our progress on the Facebook Page like I did for the voting and I will take your advise on what we should do with the money afterwards. I have a clear plan, but you will be able to influence that plan or change it. (Every cent will be invested in the Dublin Event Guide!)
Let me know what you think on dublineventguide@gmail.com or just go ahead and click on that button up there and show the others the way.
Maybe you will even find some more people that are happy to support our David vs Goliath funding approach!? A good reason to talk about the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) and to suggest to others to subscribe too. They can do that easily on the right hand side at www.dublineventguide.com and they can also LIKE the Dublin Event Guide at www.facebook.com/DublinEventGuide
If you prefer to just donate the normal way, either the 10 Euro in one go or a different amount, you can do that here: www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm I will from today add all donations to the “DOINGITALONE fund” if you are behind me and this idea.
And without putting your hand in your pocket (for the Dublin Event Guide) at all you can also help by ALWAYS using the ad links in the Dublin News Section and the ads in the Dublin Event Guides when you buy/order goods. If you buy goods immediately after clicking on a link/ad that you find in this e-zine/newsletter (Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon, Book Depository, LastMinute etc), you help the Dublin Event Guide everytime. This is how it works: The company you buy from (Groupon, Amazon, Living Social, Book Depository etc) registers that you came to them via a link from the Dublin Event Guide and they show their appreciation by giving a small commission (5-8%) to the Dublin Event Guide. This might only be 30 cent a go, but if you did that for all online purchases and if lots of people used it, then it could make a big dent into the EUR 170 needed. Use these links as often as possible it doesn’t cost you a cent and you help big time!
Have a great weekend + week!

The “Feel Good Slot” at this place in the Dublin Event Guide is to share some inspirational, motivational or thought provoking quotes, stories or video clips. You wonder why I added this section to this e-mail magazine? If your week was great, you might not need it, but most of us had some challenging moments in the last week and there could be more in the coming week and this section is for the people that want to overcome the hurdles, achieve more and remember that despite all, life is great!
For reasons you might fully understand if you are a close follower of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events), this week’s Feel Good Slot video clip is about setting Goals, pursuing goals and not giving up. Check it out here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZnlB9fG39E If you pursue your goals, you will always come across certain stumbling blocks or hurdles. Finding solutions to overcome them makes the journey an adventure. :-)

This part is important to “keep the show on the road”:
Last week Gabriel K and Luis F were the great people who helped with a crucial donation! Thanks a lot! All the support is much needed. Do you want to be part of the “wonderful people list” as well? Just a small contribution and you will join the ranks of the much appreciated Dublin Event Guide supporters.
Your help is absolutely needed too to ensure that you and everyone else will continue to get the Dublin Event Guide every week. The cost for sending the weekly newsletter is approx. EUR 170 per month and your EUR 12 per year will ensure that I will be able to pay the bills.
Has the Dublin Event Guide helped you to find events that you otherwise wouldn’t have known about, or have you saved money by finding great free events? Then go to www.perfectresults.info/donate.htm and give something back!
I appreciate ANY help: EUR 12 would be great (that’s just 25 cent per week!), but even if it is just the price of 2 pints it will help.
You can donate online by following this link to the PayPal&CreditCard donation page www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm If you want to transfer your donation directly to my account, just send a mail to dublineventguide@gmail.com and I will send you the details.

This section is intended to provide some help in picking and choosing from the huge number of events by sharing with you what I will/might or would do. This is not a “best of…” list and if an event is not listed here, it by no means implies that the event is not interesting. Instead my “picks” are just based on my personal preferences. All events mentioned here are described in detail further down.
Today I had to draw a line at 160 events and I could have easily added another 20-30. I find more and more events. Not all of them are big, but sometimes the relatively small ones are the ones with the punch!
This week, Granby Park is definitely worth a visit again and if you bring your kids on Sunday, you will be the coolest parent! Sculpture in Context is providing a free tour on Saturday with the artists present. Nice add-on bonus. The Jobs Expo is on for another day on Saturday and the Dublin Fashion Festival is in full swing. I like the Fusion Sunday World Culture Market because of its cultural variety.
Some interesting talks during the week! For me the most interesting ones are the one about Working at -60 degrees on Tuesday and the one with the French Polar Explorer on Wednesday. Both could be booked out soon, but they weren’t yet when I wrote this.
There are more interesting events! Have a look! :-)

Down with Jazz – Ticket Competition
06-08 Sept (Fri+Sat from 19:30, Sun 14:00-20:00)
Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin 2
Down With Jazz is inspired by the 1930’s movement to ban jazz music from the dancehalls and airwaves in Ireland by members of the church and GAA. It is a music festival with 3 days of the finest Irish based jazz, blues, funk and world musicians. It will take place at Meeting House Square and the bug umbrellas give you the protection of an indoors venue with the airiness of an open air gig.
I was at that festival last year and really enjoyed it. The little promo clip here www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Wjy5L7ZCus doesn’t tell you that much about the event itself. but just imagine really good jazz, blues and funk in a cool venue. That’ll do!
Tickets are this year EUR 10 per day or EUR 25 for a weekend pass (children under 12 are free on the Sunday!) and you can book on www.entertainment.ie/show-/Meeting-House-Square/Down-With-Jazz-Festival/event-2686297.htm
More details can be found here www.downwithjazz.ie/ amd here www.facebook.com/DownWithJazz
The line up on the three days is:
+ Fri: Chris Engel Quintet, Nigel Mooney Band, Ripe for Rebels, Yurodny
+ Sat: Cormac Kenevey Quartet, Ed Deane Band, Butter, The Multiverse, ZoiD with Horns
+ Sun: UCD Gamelan, No Crows, Dublin Guitar Night, Paul Dunlea Band, Khanda, OuterSpaceways Inc.
And the winners of the tickets for Friday night are: David Levins, Kiera Grafton, Roisin Fitzpatrick, Sophie Cabri,
Clodagh Colleran, Julianne Clowry, Anna Wilk, Brian O’Murchu, Daniel Cantero. Congratulations!

Promote your product or (non-free) event with a competition in the Dublin Event Guide!
The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) focuses on free events, but we all fully understand that not everything can be free in life and if you run a non-free event (or sell a cool product), I am sure it would help you if you could let the 26,000+ Dublin Event Guide readers know about your event or product. If you can make a few tickets (product samples) available for the Dublin Event Guide readers, I can help you and promote your event (product) in the context of a competition. Cost to you? In most cases not a cent! Just contact me on dublineventguide@gmail.com and we can discuss the details. It is all very simple! ;-)

Dublin Event Guide Sponsor Krav Maga Ireland on Newstalk
You probably know that Krav Maga Ireland, probably Ireland’s largest self-defence training provider, is the biggest sponsor supporting the Dublin Event Guide. This support is essential and together with the other sponsors and your crucial donations it ensures that I can continue to provide you with valuable information about free events.
Some of you also know that another one of my spare time activities is to teach self-defence classes with Krav Maga Ireland, where we train about 1000 people every year.
Last week the radio station Newstalk featured Krav Maga Ireland and I have a role in that feature as well. It is not a speaking role, I am just a silent extra who helped on the day to show some moves to Niamh Hassel, the Newstalk reporter, but she made me sound really impressive :-) in the second half of the feature. The cheque is in the post Niamh! ;-)
You can listen to the Newstalk feature here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=RW-6ybz78J0 and find lots more information about Krav Maga Ireland at KravMagaIreland.com

Rosie Hackett Bridge
I already mentioned it briefly on Facebook during the week: The new LUAS bridge over the Liffey that is still being built will be named “Rosie Hackett Bridge”. Many will ask “Rosie Who?” and even the author of the book “Lockout: Dublin 1913”, Padraig Yeates, says at 38:30 in the You Tube video here that Rosie Hackett wasn’t a remarkable person, but that together with 1000s of others she supported the labour movement and survived the Lockout. But he also says that he thinks as a representative of all those 1000s of people Rosie Hackett is a deserving “name-giver”.
There is a goo chance that the reasons for Dublin City Councillors choosing he rname was that: 1) She was connected to the 1913 Lockout. 2) She is a woman.
If 2013 wasn’t the year of the Lockout commemoration, it is doubtful that Rosie Hackett’s name had been chosen and if there hadn’t been a big uproar about the fact that in the City Centre none of the bridges are named after women, she would possibly not have had a chance. (There are bridges named after women outside of the City Centre.)
My favourite from the shortlisted names was Bram Stoker, but I have no problem with Rosie Hackett as the chosen name. To most of us the name a bridge carries is rather inconsequential anyway and we might not even know the names or the people behind the names. What do you know about Butt or Grattan or Father Mathew or O’Donovan Rossa or Talbot or Frank Sherwin or Sean Heuston? Some of these names you might never have heard and still they are names of bridges in Dublin, other names you have heard but you don’t know or can’t remember who was behind it. (Some were even robbed of their first names!). And in the end, to most, the new bridge will probably always be the “LUAS Bridge”.
And another thought: Had the naming process started a little later, would the bridge maybe now – after recent events – be named differently? Seamus Heaney Bridge maybe?

HMV Vouchers accepted, but read this first!
I reported last week that the new HMV will accept old Gift Cards and Vouchers but don’t rush into the shops just yet. The new HMV has opened the Henry Street Shop again this Friday and the shops in Dundrum and Liffey Valley will follow, but gift cards and vouchers won’t be accepted straight away, only after an exchange process and then only for one month. The HMV Press Release says:
“From Friday 6th September until Friday 11th October 2013, customers with a valid HMV gift card should log on to hmv.ie, or pick up a leaflet in store which will explain the exchange process. Customers will be invited to register online for verification, and will then be issued with a new card of the same value week commencing 14th October 2013. Consumers will be able to use their exchanged gift cards until Friday 15th November 2013.”
So, still good news, but a few key dates to keep in mind!!

If you took the opportunity and started a new business recently (not more than approx. 6 months ago) and need a bit of support to let Dublin know about your new venture, talk to me. In this section I will feature new companies every now and then. I had to give it a rest for a while due to some technical challenges, but I seem to have mastered them more or less by now. ;-)

Based on your feedback, I have decided to do the following with the Exhibition section in this newsletter from now on: I will provide you with a link to a near-comprehensive listing of exhibitions provided by www.visualartists.ie . For me to list all exhibitions would only be doubling their good work and would be an inefficient use of my resources. The link is visualartists.ie/category/listings/dublin/
On top of that I will every now and then include here a small selection of exhibitions that either are not mentioned in the Visual Artist listing or are note-worthy to be mentioned separately.

Scultpure in Context
09:00 – 18:00, Sat 07 Sep
National Botanic Gardens, Botanic Road, Glasnevin, Dublin 9
“Sculpture in Context” is a brilliant idea and concept: It is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition were beautiful sculptures from talented artists are perfectly integrated in the amazing Botanic Garden.
“The gardens are not only a botanical haven, and a quiet oasis on the outskirts of a modern European City; they also provide a challenging venue that gives the artist the rare opportunity of realising large-scale work. The sculptures will be displayed throughout the gardens, ponds, Great Palm House, and Curvilinear Range, with the smaller works exhibited in the gallery above the Visitor Centre. On Saturdays throughout the exhibition, you will have a rare opportunity to join the artists for a guided tour throughout the exhibition. “
Admission is free and the exhibition will run until 18 October. I will mention the exhibition every weekend, but it obviously is also there during the week.

Granby Pop-up Park – Music and Art
10:00, Sat 07 Sep
Granby Park, Lower Dominick Street, Dublin 2
On a vacant site where a few years ago still social housing was standing, the voluntary arts collective, Upstart, has created a big urban Pop-up Park, called Granby Park. The park will be there until 22 Sept. During this time a whole range of events will take place in the park and nearly all of them will be free.
“Urban Park” usually means that you have to go a bit easy on your expectations regarding plants and greenery, but if you consider that work only started in July, you can imagine that the term “park” has to be interpreted a good bit wider. One thing is certain, though: It will be nicer than Wolf Tone Square, which Dublin City at times likes to call “Wolfe Tone Park”.
Granby Park will be open Mon-Fri from 08:00-19:00 and Sat&Sun from 10:00-19:00 and you are invited to visit it. Food & Drink will be sold on site, but alcohol is not permitted.
I strongly recommend that you check it out and I will also tell you about the upcoming events in the next few weeks.
Sat 07 Sept (14:00-19:00): Happenings Dublin host a day of music performances and arts events. Adm. free
Sun 08 Sept: (14:00-19:00): Diskotekken invite to Jazz & Hip Hop Family Fun Day. Adm free

Yoga in Phoenix Park
11:00 – 12:00, Sat 07 Sep
Bandstand (behind the Tea Room, near the Zoo), Phoenix Park, Dublin 8
This will be the fourth year for “Yoga in the Park” and I think it is a brilliant initiative for a very worthy cause. From May until September, Fiona from www.twopalmsyoga.com and her team of teachers invite to an hour of Yoga in Phoenix Park every Saturday. No booking is required and you decide how much you give, the class is donation based.
All proceeds go to the Dublin Simon Community, a charity that does invaluable work for the homeless people in Dublin. Just bring a mat or a towel, some water and (hopefully) even some sun protection to the class. Should the weather be bad, the bandstand will be shelter or even training location. The training is suitable for all levels, so even total beginners are very welcome.

ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems – Science Gallery
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 07 Sep
Science Gallery, Pearse Street, TCD, Dublin 2
The current Science Gallery exhibition “ILLUSION: Nothing is as it seems” will run from 12 July-29 Sept and is really interesting. Admission is free.
The exhibition is all about Illusions and it is a “perception-shattering insight into the human mind, playfully combining the techniques used by magicians and explored by psychologists.”
More than 20 installations will deceive your eyes (and ears) and will show you that what we perceive is often radically different from the reality. You will find impressive and amazing things, but nothing will be boring! The exhibition is suitable for all ages, so bring your children or – if you don’t have any – just bring yourself.
I have seen nearly every Science Gallery exhibition and I would say this is definitely one of the best.
ILLUSION was curated by psychologist, author and magician Richard Wiseman, and was researched by deception artist Paul Gleeson and a large group of mediators are available in the gallery to explain all the things that you see (or hear) to you.
Have a look at the website below to see an outline on what is on show. I strongly recommend that you see the show and tell me afterwards what you thought about it: dublineventguide@gmail.com (During the week (Tues-Fri) the exhibition is open until 20:00 and from 12:00 and on Sat+Sun; 12:00-18:00).

Ink Slingers Creative Writing Hour
12:00, Sat 07 Sep
Irish Writers’ Centre, 19 Parnell Square North, Dublin 1
The next Ink Slingers Creative Writing Hour will take place on Sat. Two weeks ago it pointed out that the event is free. That reference is not in the text anymore this time. I only stress that because before the summer there was some unrest over some charges that were brought in and people felt they weren’t sufficiently forewarned.
The hour includes writing exercises and prompts to get ideas flowing. It is open to everyone and is suitable for all levels of experience

Public Painting with Josef Haring
12:00 – 18:00, Sat 07 Sep
O’Connell Street, Dublin 1
Czech artist Josef Haring (*1952) invited all Dubliners to take part in his new European project, which started already on Thursday, but they didn’t tell me until a few hours before. Well, luckily it is a 3-day event and you will still be able to take part on Saturday.
During his project he intends to travel the Europe and create an imaginary portrait of various European cities. Everybody can take part and become a co-author of this piece of art. Photographs of all participants will be displayed along with the painting in each city, with one large exhibition of the whole series at the end of the project.
You can contribute and express your views and feelings about Dublin on four canvasses at the O’Connell Monument in O’Connoll Street. Participation is free.

Who got Game? – Basketball & Soccer Tournament
13:00, Sat 07 Sep
Mountjoy Square, Dublin 2
‘Who got Game?’ a 3 vs 3 Basketball & 5 vs 5 Soccer tournament between urban Irish young people and ethnic minority young adults who are interested in the same activities. The event is organised by the Youth Platform Project and by the New Communities Partnership. There will also be music and dance.
And if you want to read the worst possible event description for an event like that, check out www.dublin.ie/calendar_details.aspx?eventid=4309 It is clear that the people who write that nonsense fully understand the needs and wants of the young people they deal with. … NOT!!
I expect, though, that the event will be better than the awful description because once the kids make it their own, it will all turn out well.

Dublin Sketchers – Sunday Meet-up
14:00, Sun 08 Sep
Dublin (various locations)
The “Dublin Sketchers” is an informal group of typically hobby artists who go somewhere different in Dublin every Sunday (e.g. National Museum, Maritime Museum, Dublin Flea Market, Farmleigh, Botanic Gardens, Dublin Castle), sketch for one to two hours and then meet up for coffee afterwards and discuss their sketches. There are some hugely talented people among them and it is a great idea to meet up with others who have the same hobby. Find out on their website where they will meet and join them if you do some sketching/drawing yourself. I know that the Dublin Sketchers often use the Dublin Event Guide to find interesting free events and I am delighted to be able to help!

Leinster House to open its doors for Culture Night
Fri 20 Sept
Leinster House
This is a VERY early advance notive, I know. A whole month until Culture Night takes place, but you wouldn’t believe how popular the Leinster House tours are. I got an early heads up and I will quickly pass it on to you so that you have a chance to book your place on the tour. I did the Leinster House (that’s the building where the Irish Parliament is in) last year and it is extremely interesting.
So, if you want to look behind the curtains of political power at a tour, don’t delay and book as soon as possible!
Tours are free, but ticketed and due to high demand there is a limit of four tickets per person. If you want to reserve tickets call 1890 252 808 or better (and cheaper) go to www.oireachtasevents.ie to book.

Please note: This section contains observations taken from the world I live in that strike me as odd. I express my personal opinion and you might not share it. If you are easily offended by opinions that are not identical with your own, please don’t read this section. ;-)
HMV Mania!!
A shop that sells somewhat out-dated products re-opens after going bankrupt and being bought by a new company. It was closed for a coulpe of month and nothing earth-shattering has happened since. Other similar shops stayed open and all their products are easily available online either for tangible goods purchase or for non-tangible goods consumption.
So all in all nothing too exciting! Yes, I mentioned it more than once too, but that was because of the Gift Card issue and because I nearly lost EUR 100 that I now hope to recover.
But what happened here: twitter.com/search?q=hmv+henry+street&src=typd&mode=realtime ? How does this re-opening of a long-term doomed shop justify that level of mania? And why oh why did people not give their love to Tower Records, who are and were working hard while HMV took a summer holiday?
Here are a few of these manic reactions:
@fbonnevier: THEYRE REOPENING DUBLIN HMV TODAY IN HENRY STREET @TORRAS WOHOOO PARTY JUST IN TIME FOR YOUUUUU
@Saoirseeeee: Gutted I could’nt got to the HMV on Henry Street reopening. Gahhh :(
@BreffniSmith HMV is open in Henry Street again!!!!!!!!!!!! #Rejoice
@KellyHarris04 HMV reopening on Henry Street, never been so excited in my life #sad
@nuriyoko HMV reabrirá mañana en Henry Street!!! Happy, happy, happy!!!
Odd!

This Event Guide (the “Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events)”) is an Event Guide with a difference. It covers mostly free events based on the thinking that free events deserve additional support and that non-free events have the money to pay for advertisement. The Guide is a _Guide_ and not just a listing and is therefore at times quite extensive. It is sent for free to anybody who is interested and if you want to be added to the mailing list or know somebody who would like to receive this guide, just send them to www.dublineventguide.com, where they can subscribe. If you have feedback – good or bad – PLEASE tell me via dublineventguide@gmail.com.
BTW: I am not paid or otherwise rewarded for compiling and distributing this Event Guide it is purely a hobby so your donations are needed: www.perfectresults.info/donation.htm . Advertisement in or sponsorship of the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) is possible and very welcome, please contact me for more information.
Please note: The Dublin Event Guide (for Free Event) is not related or connected to the long gone fortnightly printed publication “the event guide” that you found until December 2008 in pubs and other venues.
